Cooking Beyond Sight: Debra Erickson's Blind Kitchen Revolution

Living the Dream with Curveball

Send us a textThe kitchen transforms from a place of anxiety to a hub of independence in this revealing conversation with Debra Erickson, founder of The Blind Kitchen. Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at 28, Debra shares her remarkable journey from someone who barely cooked to becoming the only blind student in culinary school, and ultimately, an innovative entrepreneur revolutionizing cooking for the visually impaired. What does adaptive cooking actually look like? Debra demystifies the process with practical solutions that work remarkably well. She explains how simple tools like cafeteria trays can contain spills, Lazy Susans can access items in the back of cupboards, and a quick tap technique can center pans on hot burners. Her talking thermometers ensure food safety while specialized measuring cups with tactile indicators eliminate guesswork from recipes. These aren't just clever workarounds—they're pathways to culinary confidence. The conversation delves into the psychological barriers that often keep visually impaired people out of the kitchen: fear of making others sick, cutting or burning oneself, and the embarrassment of presenting messy or unappetizing meals. With each fear, Debra offers both specialized tools and mind-shifting strategies that have helped countless individuals reclaim their cooking independence. "I would challenge anyone who thinks they can't cook safely and independently," she says. "You probably can, you just don't know how yet."Beyond practical advice, this episode captures the spirit of innovation born from necessity. Debra's vision extends to building community among blind cooks through possible virtual dinners and cooking contests. Whether you're facing vision challenges yourself or know someone who is, this conversation will forever change how you think about accessible cooking and the power of adaptive technology to preserve life's simple joys.www.theblindkitchen.comWant to be a guest on Living the Dream with Curveball? We are going to hear the inspiring story of how they declared space for their own dreams and made their dreams a reality during the pandemic, of course we want to hear all about meeting Kelly Clarkson, and they are letting us listen to some clips of their songs. Today's episode is so fun and one that you do not want to miss!  About Our Guest  THE LAZY SUSANS are five working moms from Milton, Massachusetts who started a band in the heart of the pandemic — with no musical experience — and played their first set six months later at the 2021 Milton Porchfest. Eight months after that, they were playing original music on national TV as guests on the Kelly Clarkson Show. With influences ranging from Liz Phair to Lizzo, they've been writing original songs, booking gigs around the Boston area, and encouraging other newbie musicians to declare space for their dreams. More than just a mom band, they're preparing for their first-anniversary set back where they started, at Milton Porchfest on September 17.   The Lazy Susans are: Imge Ceranoglu on keys, bass, and vocals Martha Kennedy on drums Leila Mitchell on percussion, keys, and vocals Heather Shaw on bass and vocals Joanna Weiss on guitar and vocals   Learn more about The Lazy Susans, and keep track of their upcoming gigs on their website: www.thelazysusans86.com Resources  Follow The Lazy Susans on Instagram Follow The Lazy Susans on Facebook Listen to The Lazy Susans music What is the Wicked Good Momcast? We spent less time on finding out why it’s called French (someone should look on Andressdry.com. Although they grew up at different times in two different parts of the world, Antonia Susan and Lande Hekt have a lot more in common than you'd think. They both latched onto music young, they bashed about in their teenage years and they found a wider audience for their emotive and honest take on indie rock in their 20s. From the misty Blue Mountains to the countryside of Exeter, Tones and Lande have plenty of stories to share of how music has impacted on their lives - and prior to a show together at Crowbar Sydney, they shared them together. Thank you to Adam Buncher and to Ben David for their assistance on this episode. The Lazy Susans' "R U OK?" EP is out now via Resist Records.Muncie Girls' "Fixed Ideals" LP is out now via Lost Boy Records.
