Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Don't Go in the House (1979), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981) In 1984, in the U.K., the Video Recording Act was passed, which required certification of all video releases by the British Board of Film Classification, aka BBFC. This all came about due to a list of video titles that a group of various religious and other social groups run by the likes of Mary Whitehouse, deemed unsuitable to be viewed and thought for sure it would help corrupt the youth of England. The initial list had 72 titles on it, both films that had already been released after obtaining a BBFC certificate but now was deemed too offensive, as well as a whole bunch of other titles that were believed to fall under the obscenity law. If you own a shop that rented or sold one of these titles, you could be shut down, fined, and possibly even go to jail for it. And this all took place, not in the dark ages, but in the mid 1980s. Hard to believe it, especially growing up here in the U.S. Some of those titles have only recently gotten passed and released over in the U.K., even 40 years later. Blows the mind. In this episode, we discuss not only the whole Video Nasty era, but cover 3 films from that list, with each of us watching all 3 and see if we made it through without turning us into mindless deviants. Oops. Too late. Films mentioned in this episode: The Bat Woman (1968), Beast in Heat (1977), The Body Snatcher (1957), The Braniac (1962), The Burning (1981), Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981), Curse of the Crying Woman (1962), The Curious Dr. Hump (1969), Dead of Winter (1987), Doctor of Doom (1963), Don't Answer the Phone (1980), Don't Go in the House (1979), Don't Look in the Basement (1973), Don't Open Till Christmas (1984), Driller Killer (1979), Entrails of a Virgin (1986), Eyes of a Stranger (1981), Faces of Death (1978), Fear No Evil (1981), The Gestapo's Last Orgy (1977), Horror High (1973), I Drink Your Blood (1971), I Spit on Your Grave (1978), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974), Maniac (1980), Mortuary (1982), Mother's Day (1980), Nekromantik (1988), New York Ripper (1982), Night of the Bloody Apes (1969), Perdita Durango (1997), The Prowler (1981), Psycho (1960), Roar (1981), Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolf Man (1973), Santo and Blue Demon vs. the Monsters (1970), Santo vs. Frankenstein's Daughter (1972), Santo vs. the Head Hunters (1971), Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (1969),Santo in the Vengeance of the Mummy (1971), Shock Waves (1977), Silent Night Deadly Night (1984), Speed (1994), SS Experiment Love Camp (1976), Subspecies (1991), Suspiria (1977), Terrorvision (1986), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Twister (1996), Unhinged (1982), El Vampiro (1957), The Wresting Women vs. the Aztec Mummy (1964)

Colm and Thos conclude the MusicalTalk in-depth review of the 2024 EdFringe by looking at three of the most diverse and different shows that you could have seen in Scotland this summer - Mary Mary Quite Contrary, a spoof musical about 1960s and 70s moral campaigner, Mary Whitehouse; Behind the Curtain, a hugely charming youth musical giving us a contemporary take on a 42nd Street-style story; and the hugely accomplished Wallis, the musicalisation of the Edward and Mrs Simpson story (perhaps better known as "Windsor and Walli's affair" to Follies fans!).  There's something for everyone in this insightful episode!

Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

Show Notes: Despite what Americans may think, moral panics about TV exist everywhere and today, we begin the exploration of a doozy. The start of a two-part look into four episodes of Star Trek that came a cropper at the hands of Auntie Beeb (a not-so affectionate term for the BBC) that of course allows Miles to indulge in one of his favourite talking points about British movie culture - Video Nasties! Because of this, we're only looking at two episodes per part. In ‘Miri,' we see some very familiar style backlots and some very 1960s ways of talking to young women which definately makes our casual explorers think Auntie may have a point! Then, we jump straight to the third season of The Original Trek as our heroes endure ten minutes of plot and forty minutes of bloody nonsence in ‘Plato's Stepchildren,' possibly one of the most famous episodes of Star Trek (unless you're from the Deep South) but is consent more important than controversy? Whatever we decide, the Big List will change forever! Episodes discussed: ‘Miri' (10:39) and ‘Plato's Stepchildren' (38:17) Talking Points: Video Nasties, why were these episodes banned from broadcast until the 90s, Miles' first choice for his Non-Trek thing indicates some wider issues, Alien Romulus, Miles misses Stupid Drunk British Lads smashing stuff with pipes, Astro's Playroom, Miles and Charlie have different views towards achieving Platinum on games, Miri, Miles only wants to talk about lists, not get put on one himself, the always creepy 'she looks 14 but she's actually 300 trope,' Kirk's charm here does not read well in 2024, exact replicas of Earth are a little silly, how many SF societies wipe themselves out looking for immortality (and Miles pulls out a bit of 'meanwhile in the UK, Doctor Who was doing this' coincidence), we briefly touch on the rather triggering experiences of Grace Whitney (Yeoman Rand) shortly after this episode and her leaving the series, the oddly faced Steven Jay Pollard, Droogs in waiting, Shatner clearly trying not to punch a child, did the BBC have a point with Miri? Violence from children, inferred child-death, Hey Jude, the majesty of the theme for ‘The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,' whenever people bring up eugenics, just turn around and run, we've started to incorporate our experiences with Space 1999 into watching Star Trek, nonsense starts and just generally never stops, Charlie gets slap-happy, Mary Whitehouse would not approve which is fine because we don't approve of Mary Whitehouse. The nonsense gets creepy when Spock starts singing and it gets REALLY creepy when Kirk and Uhura is made to smooch, Charlie really wants to make a Dragonball Z joke here, when it's done, Miles is pulling off the band-aid, some real shame on our heroes her, is this our first mention of slash-fics? This episode doesn't go full-Hellraiser, No Gods No Philosopher Kings, sorry Parmon, one day Miles will go on a long tirade on how people misuse the term ‘Lynchian,'how much truth is there in the legend, would you show this to your partner and we can't escape Shatner's disturbingly pointy nipple, Miles has watched some wank in his life and that definately reflects his opinion of the episode, Miles poses Charlie a very important question.

Natalie Roles narrates a promo for this stunning book from our sponsor Michael Seely of Saturday Morning Press: In 1964, BBC1 launched a new twice weekly serial designed to be something different from the usual soap fare such as their own 'Compact', set in the posh offices of a ladies magazine. Set in a Midlands town (and made by the BBC's Birmingham studio in the days before Pebble Mill), 'Swizzlewick' was designed to be a prime time satirical swipe at local government with larger than life but recognisable characters with huge personality flaws, and hold up a mirror to our faces and see if we recognise ourselves... The serial was created by the talented playwright David Turner, given the writing opportunity of a lifetime and do something bold and original, but even early on, made some within the BBC very nervous. However, 'Swizzlewick' upset the dignitaries from Town Halls up and down the country, and very quickly attracted the attention of the emerging Clean Up TV movement headed by one Mrs Mary Whitehouse, who quickly suspected she was being lampooned by the writer following a clash with Turner when she launched her campaign in Birmingham three months earlier where his controversial BBC play 'Trevor' was criticised. Whitehouse was sent the script for an episode she declared 'indecent' to be shown at a time when children were still up, and just in time for her next rally. How the BBC reacted, and David Turner's explosive reaction are explored in this book, as well as the subsequent battle to keep the programme going. The book also investigates Whitehouse's claim that Turner was sending up the nervous collapse of her husband. Was the BBC using Turner to 'get' Whitehouse? Was she correct in that the series was indecent and tasteless? Was Mrs Smallgood and her Morality drive a 'calculated dig' at her campaign - or a stereotype she recognised she fitted... 'Taste and Decency The Swizzlewick Story' tells the story of how the serial was created, its production, launch and initial hostile reception by scandalised Town Hall dignitaries up and down the country. The book also details each of the 26 episodes transmitted, all bar one no longer survives. Explore this book and their other titles: https://shop.saturdaymorningpress.co.uk/

Mary Whitehouse successfully sued Gay News and publisher Denis Lemon at the Old Bailey in a trial that began on 11th July, 1977 - Britain's last conviction for blasphemy. What had ired the notorious Christian campaigner was the magazine's publication of “The Love That Dares to Speak Its Name”, a poem by James Kirkup written from the perspective of a Roman centurion who graphically describes having sex with Jesus after his crucifixion. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the poem literally could not be defended on its artistic merit; reveal how it came to Whitehouse's attention in the first place; and consider the literary potency of ‘Foxy Judas'...  Content Warning: explicit poetry, necrophilia, material likely to offend Christians. They talk about Rishi's reshuffle – with Kemi Badenoch having been given the larger role of International Trade and Business. Toby recalls an uncharacteristically funny story by Stewart Lee about Grant Shapps – who was also reshuffled to the somewhat oxymoronic Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Nick and Toby also discuss the pathetic examples of Dominic Raab's so called ‘bullying' of civil servants (aka holding staff to high standards, like spelling correctly). Nick and Toby discuss whether The Grammys were Satanic or just naff. Toby posits that back in the day – David Bowie dressing as a woman (whilst actually being incredibly talented) was genuinely counter cultural; compared to the low quality musical output from ‘brave' woke performers who are simply swimming with the tide. THE SON ALSO RISES: Join me and movie hyphenate writer, filmmaker, academic, businessman and coach Tony Klinger (The Who: The Kids Are All Right; Dirty, Sexy and Totally Iconic; Solo2Darwin and many, many others) as we talk about Monty Python's Life of Brian and The Gospel According to Matthew, two films that take, let us say, different approaches to the story of Christ. You preach love and peace. You try to get people to think for themselves. You try to create a better world. And what do you get for your trouble? You get crucified. What's a Messiah to do?…Sounds like it's time for Episode 86 of Pop Art, where we find the pop culture in art and the art in pop culture. It's the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. Today, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, movie hyphenate writer, filmmaker, academic, businessman and coach Tony Klinger, who has chosen as his film, the satire of religion and Biblical epics, Monty Python's Life of Brian, while I have chosen Pier Paolo Pasolini's austere, neorealist The Gospel According to St. Matthew, both films revolving around messiahs. Tony also joined me previously for Episode 57 where we talked his father's film Get Carter with Bad Day at Black Rock. We also covered Monty Python and the Holy Grail on Episode 3 with my guest Jay Cluitt where we combined it with The Seventh Seal. And in this episode, we answer such questions as: What is the difference between British and American humor? What is the correct translation of the title of Pasolini's movie? Who is Loretta? What is the difference between a European and American approach to spiritual subject matter? Why did the Pythons lose funding two days before leaving for Tunisia to start filming? Why did it take three years to get Matthew into a theater in England? What was the world's most expensive cinema ticket? Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? How did the Pythons use Norway's ban to promote the film? What did the Vatican City newspaper L'Osservatore Romano call Matthew? Who is Mary Whitehouse and would you want to be one? How well would Pasolini do today in regards to the metoo movement? Who is Otto? How did the Tunisian extras criticize the directing of Life of Brian? Was there a doctor in the house? Check out Tony's website for more information about his films and projects https://www.tonydklinger.com/ Check out my blog at https://howardcasner.wordpress.com/ My books, More Rantings and Ravings of a Screenplay Reader, The Starving Artists and Other Stories and The Five Corporations and One True Religion can be found at https://www.amazon.com/s?k=howard+casner&ref=nb_sb_noss Meanwhile, like, follow or comment on my podcast. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine and two scary skeleton creatures are all so unspeakably horny that all Nathan, Corey, Si and Pete can do is Hide. Notes and links Jessica Raine, who plays Emma in Hide will go on to play Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who which is released a few months after this episode. But more about that later, perhaps. (Spoilers!) Sound Effects No. 13: Death & Horror was an album produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1977 and used continuously in TV and stage productions ever since. Mary Whitehouse complained vociferously about its release, because of course she did. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) also features time-travelling astronauts with a ghostly influence on the past. It's hard to imagine that it makes that much more sense than Hide though, isn't it? I considered writing about the racist lyrics of Cole Porter's Let's Do It, but after a second's reflection, I've decided to just let you Google them for yourself. But really, don't. The Stone Tape (1972) was a made-for-TV movie written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featuring Jane Asher and Doctor Who's very own Ian Cuthbertson. Like Hide, it features researchers spending the night in a house haunted by a spectral woman, but Neil Cross would like to make it very clear that for copyright purposes, it is in every way a legally distinct entity from Hide. El Sandifer is particularly scathing in her assessment of Nigel Kneale in her essay on (among other things) ITV's 1978 TV movie version of Quatermass. And finally, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? was an episode of a comedy radio programme called Whatever Happened To…?, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 1994 — featuring Jane Asher (again) as Susan Foreman. It was released as a special feature on the DVD of The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Actually, there is one more thing. The story from The Sarah Jane Adventures that we talk about in the tag is called Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?. It's amazing. Go and watch it immediately. Part 2 - The Golden Decade. GETTING CARTER author NICK TRIPLOW chats to Paul Burke about Ted Lewis and Brit Noir as No Exit Press reissue 2 of his classic novels Jack Carter's Law and Billy Rags. In this second part we discuss the novels of Ted Lewis from Plender to GBH, the film Yellow Submarine, tv cop show  Z Cars and Mary Whitehouse. NICK TRIPLOW GETTING CARTER: Ted Lewis and the Birth of Brit Noir is a meticulously researched and riveting account of the career of a doomed genius. Long-time admirer Nick Triplow has fashioned a thorough, sympathetic and unsparing narrative. Required reading for noirists, this book will enthral and move anyone who finds irresistible the old cocktail of rags to riches to rags. Nick is also the author of the novel Frank's Wild Years.Jack Carter's Law  Ted Lewis returns to his greatest invention, a smooth-operating hardcase named Jack Carter, who is about to burn a city down in order to silence an informant... London. The late 1960s. It's Christmas and Jack Carter's the top man in a crime syndicate headed by two brothers, Gerald and Les Fletcher. He's also a worried man. The fact that he's sleeping with Gerald's wife, Audrey, and that they plan on someday running away together with a lot of the brothers' money, doesn't have Jack concerned. Instead it's an informant - one of his own men - that has him losing sleep. The grass has enough knowledge about the firm to not only bring down Gerald and Les but Jack as well. Jack doesn't like his name in the mouth of that sort.Billy Rags  It's the 1960s and Billy Cracken is a hard man to keep locked up. An austere and troubled childhood has given way to life as a hardened criminal and now status as one of the most feared prisoners in England. He has been moved from one maximum security prison to the next. Guards and inmates alike fear and begrudgingly respect the powerfully-built Cracken. But a life doing his porridge, even if as a minor celebrity, isn't the one he wants. A girlfriend and a child await Cracken on the outside and he'll stop at nothing to get to them. While plotting his escape he crosses a powerful mobster who vows to make Cracken's life hell, and if nothing else succeeds at making his escape all the more difficult, something the ever-rebellious Cracken defiantly relishes. Billy Rags is a fascinating look into the lives of British inmates serving time in a maximum security prison. Lewis manages once again to tell an exciting, action-filled story with a soul - demonstrated most clearly in a series of brilliant flashbacks to Billy's childhood and in the end conjures a character that will remind readers of both Tom Hardy in Bronson and Lee Marvin in Point Blank.Produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate and Leigh Crime TimePaul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover, NB Magazine and the European Literature Network.

No, it's not a Xmas Day one – that year's episode, featuring Jinglenonce OBE introducing Clair by Gilbert O'Sullivan, has been plunged into the memory hole – but as always it's an opportunity for the show ponies of Our Brand New Favourite Year For Pop to have a trot-about, egged on by Tony Blackburn and his foul nemesis Edmonds.Musicwise, GASP: a combination of old chancers and young upstarts team up to drag Pop away from the foul mung of the Sixventies, the Heads are chased off by unkempt youths in spangles, and the result is a glorious year for singles – and this episode of TOTP is a non-stop barrage of banger after banger after banger after banger. Mike Leander invents the DNA of Glam. Donny Osmond demonstrates why eleven year-old girls turn up at his hotel with sledgehammers. After some KID'S LIB INNIT, Hilda Woodward casts an eerie spell and enchants the Kids into the worst occurrence of Granny Claps ever seen on Top Of The Pops. Roberta Flack takes over on piano. Cherry Gillespie's three-day ordeal in wrapping paper bondage mercifully comes to an end. Mary Whitehouse's masturbatory nightmares are relived once more, with the assistance of Rolf Harris. Then it's the three-punch knockout of Utah Valhalla, the Jackson 5 and the Blessed Marc before Ringo pitches up at the end. Neil Kulkarni and Taylor Parkes join Al Needham for a celebration of Top Of The Pops at its most godlike, gleefully veering off on such tangents as famous pianos we have played on, schoolkids in London being forced to watch The Third Ear Band, Saddam Hussein's choice of Christmas chocolate, why Americans are so rubbish when it comes to Christmas #1's, Levi Stubbs fails to get a good night's sleep, and a brief chat about some film that the Beatles are in. Hey peeps, this weeks blog is on the controversial Netflix film Cuties. Have you heard of it? You must be a nonce then. If you've heard of it, seen it, watched any promotional material for it then as far as I'm concerned you should be locked in prison with your balls cut off. Or am I being a bit over the top about that? Perhaps the film is actually a pretty sensitively directed story of young girls and the reality that they exist in. Could it really be that the outrage around Cuties is really a loud of Mary Whitehouse-style, Daily Mail-esque bullshit that has no real founding in reality? Who knows?!! I guess you'll just have to listen to this podcast and my droning waffle to find out for yourself. Or you could just watch the movie. I don't really care what you do. Cheers. Spanish Practices

Today Custard and Daleks Day Thirty one of the Spanish Lockdown, the sometimes amusing, diary of a Brit in southern Spain under the 'Alarma' - normal life has stopped.   To find out more:  https://www.thesecretspain.com Day 31 – Custard and Daleks It is Day 31 of our Spanish Lockdown; I am starting to get quite blurry eyed.  All day peering into the new computer that arrived yesterday from China, has made me quite myopic.   The first thing we did when it arrived is to wipe the whole thing down with alcohol, starting with the box it came in.  I have to hand it to Apple their logistics are to be admired.  The machine started in China moved the Chinese Export Zone and then flew to South Korea where it went on to Germany, from Germany to Portugal and from Portugal to Spain, it took more than two weeks.   It does prove that many businesses are quite capable of operating within lockdown.  The delivery driver left the parcel on the step and sat in his cab; I received an email to confirm delivery.   Chris gets his computer to himself and has spent the day doing gym classes online, to begin with this felt a bit odd, now it is just a normal part of our daily routine.   Read a Facebook post from our friend Paul Coia, he was the first voice that was heard on Channel Four television back in the UK when it began broadcasting in 1982.  Channel Four started with a raft of most peculiar programmes, quite a lot of complaints from Mary Whitehouse at the time.  There were also quite a few complaints about Paul too.  Up to that time continuity announcers were plummy accent types who had been to Eton or Sandhurst.    Paul was a Scot and, well sounded Scottish, ..outrageous!   He posted that every night he was making Birds Custard and old-fashioned stodgy puddings he had also, out of boredom, discovered an Airfix Dalek kit that he was constructing.  It had been a birthday present from the two of us more than 25 years ago.. and he had kept it all this time.   I said “you idiot, it is worth a fortune still intact and boxed up.”  I am really missing our British comfort foods.  But where to buy custard locally? The local town is a custard free zone.   Spanish puddings are flan, arroz con leche, tarta de queso, and that is about it.  The flan is like a crème caramel without the exciting crunchy top, arroz is a very very sweet rice pudding and the tarta a kind of really quite nice cheesecake, but less sweet than its American cousin and no biscuit base either.   If you want something else you need to go to a posh restaurant where you will find chocolate desserts, fruit pies and the like.   When we first came to Spain, I thought Spanish chocolate was disgusting, it had a lot less cocoa powder and was a poor product.  That has all changed and the big brands and of course Lidl’s own chocolate have vastly improved the offering and choice.   When I was a child, sweets were a weekly treat, the three of us would go to the local cooperative shop and choose one item to the value of sixpence .. about two and half pence.   We were always greeted by the friendly, over friendly Manager of the store who always came out to greet us, often lifting me up to pick something from a higher shelf.  Sometimes he would let us have extra sweets as a special treat. What a nice man I thought.   I was very sad when one day he suddenly disappeared as he was so kind to us.  We were told that there had been some sort of bookkeeping problem and the Cooperative had sacked him.   Years later I realised the truth and just why he was so tactile and generous.   Day 31 and our thoughts have turned to custard.  At school I hated custard it used to be served in great aluminium jugs and had a thick slimy skin on it.  To be honest I hated school dinners, I have never cared for boiled potatoes and the half cooked mouldy spuds that my infant school served up were quite disgusting, rather like my father’s dinner time rules, you were not allowed to leave the table until you had finished your meal and one particular Dinner Lady delighted in bullying the children into eating everything on their plate.   To this day I still avoid plain boiled potatoes. Spanish spuds are different, they really taste potatoey – actually a lot of fruit and veg from the supermarket might not be perfectly formed, but all taste much better than the fruit and veg in Britain.   It took me a while to realise that although a lot of the fruit and veg grown here is sent over to the UK.. it has to travel for quite a few days and is packed not quite ripe, so that it arrives still edible.   Here the produce arrives sometimes within hours of being picked and ripened by the sun.. really delicious.   My Uncle Peter who lived in Barcelona during the 1950s  with my Spanish Aunt Isobel, used to boast that you haven’t eaten an orange unless you have picked it from the tree yourself.  I used to think he was just showing off, but actually oranges have a completely different texture and taste, fresh from a tree.   Aunty Isobel never turned up at our house without a gift.  Our Spanish friends now are the same,  just a little something to say thank you for inviting me.   I remember once Uncle Peter’s car rolled up outside our house and Isobel emerged struggling with what looked like a great big black metal shield.   “Ohh deeee ana, I have dragged this bluddy thing alf way across Spain, but I know you will like it, so much.”   She gave the enormous metal shield to my mother.  We all gathered round to take a look.  It was repulsive, in the centre was a large brass cut out of a fish, possibly of the goldfish variety, then to one side a series of nylon cords were stuck to the metal representing reeds.  It also weighed a ton.   “You like no?” said Isobel.  My mother always polite said.. “Yes it is very lovely and an original piece I would think?”   “But of course.” said Isobel, “We Spanish produce some very fine works of art, you know.”   My mother turned the monstrosity around to see if she could find the name of the Spanish artist who had, had the gaul to produce this ugliness.  “Oh!” my mother exclaimed.  Isobel came closer to see what she had found. We all looked and there on the back was a “Made in England” sticker!   For many years the “monstrosity’ as it was called by us all, hung in our hallway and every time I used to pass it I would remind me of my crazy Spanish Aunt and her “horrible” gifts.

Where will this rank our list overall? Does anything shock us any more? Also a few news updates - why has the BBC War of The Worlds still not been shown yet?

SPECIAL GUEST: Mary Whitehouse (CSIRO) Farmers have learned that the widespread use of pesticides is a dangerous strategy as it can lead to the evolution of highly pesticide resistant crop pests. Land managers are moving towards ‘Integrated Pest Management’ techniques that use a multitude of strategies to more responsibly control pests, including fostering populations of natural pest predators.  Mary Whitehouse has (in her own words) been masquerading as an entomologist with the CSIRO for almost 20 years studying the management of cotton crop pests in regional NSW. Although her secret scientific passion has always been the private lives of spiders. In this interview we chat about the history of genetically modified cotton in Australian agriculture and how keeping landscapes natural and biodiverse can enhance our agricultural industries.  Find out more at www.insituscience.com Follow us on Twitter @insituscience Follow us on Instagram  http://instagram.com/insituscience  Like us on Facebook Music: ‘Strange Stuff’ by Sonic Wallpaper - www.sonicwallpaper.bandcamp.com

James 3:17 NLT 'But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.' In an age that has seen an explosion of ways to access media, we are increasingly absorbed with film, TV, social media and gaming. When many thought the age of TV was ending, the emergence of ‘TV talkers’, those who blog and tweet about their TV experience, has breathed new life into TV and a fresh opportunity for canny advertising campaigns. These TV talkers publish their observations on programmes and adverts across social media, to the extent that 61 per cent of them admit to watching more TV since discussing shows online. TV talkers are also highly engaged with celebrity and pop culture. In tandem, psychologists are mapping the impact of the media’s psychological effect. This has both good and bad elements. However, it is a new influencer upon the way in which society orders itself. It is evident from research that what we subject ourselves to will influence the way we live. It was my privilege to work with Mary Whitehouse in her campaign against sex and violence on TV and she’s been proven right. My learning has been that it is important what I feed my mind upon. It is also essential that I order my life to have the time to gaze on God, be it through contemplation, the lectionary readings from scripture or other Christian writers. God speaks to us in gentleness and understanding. God appreciates the challenges of the lives we live. We are transformed as we reflect upon the person and character of God.  What we feed the mind will shape who we are and who we shall become. We have all we need for life in its fullest expression in Christ, so let us become ‘God talkers’ alongside all the existing TV talkers and use social media as a means of expressing God’s love. QUESTION: What diet does your mind have? With what is it being fed? PRAYER: Lord, help me to think upon all that is good and praiseworthy, to think upon you.

‘Lock them up and throw away the key!’ is something that is often heard.  But does locking someone up for committing a crime really work to punish an individual? What about having them come back into society a changed person, asks presenter and producer Lee Millam in this podcast. Prisons, why do we send people there?  Does it work?  Should it work?  This was the subject of a recent lecture at Gresham College in the City of London.  It is one lecture from a series on Law and Lawyers at Gresham College, presented by Professor Sir Geoffrey Nice QC.  He explains why we lock up criminals….. Geoffrey Nice:  …..for a range of reasons, many of them not fully articulated.  You could look back and say thata there are some coherent lines of justification – deterrence, retribution, rehabilitation (those are the standard ones).  But does it really explain our attitude towards imprisonment.  I rather doubt it. Not only are people complex, but our reactions to people are complex too.  Take those who, on some objective calculation, would be less culpable but get more opprobrium and heavier sentences than those who are in one sense guiltier but get lesser sentences.  The most obvious examples are those who really cannot control themselves because of their upbringing - such as sex offenders who have themselves been formed by childhood, have been victims of sex offences and may become sex offenders themselves. They draw the maximum opprobrium from society, and not the understanding that they themselves are victims. So we are complicated in the way we respond to crime. There is no great political dividend in rehabilitating people, at least there doesn’t seem to be in our country. Interestingly there are changes around the world. Norway is rather leading the way.  Its prisons are so shockingly liberal that people from America and England can’t probably recognise them as prisons at all!  Their purpose is to enable people to rejoin society.  And these prisons have a recidivist rate of 20% whereas the US and England have recidivism rates of about 70%.  Why aren’t we spending more time looking at that/ Lee Millam: If other countries are more successful at rehabilitating prisoners, then there must be lessons to learn from other systems in other parts of the world.  But there are some crimes where prison is the only answer. GN: There are some people who are so dangerous they do have to be restricted so that is one justifiable expense – though whether it has to be done in this way, given modern technology, is another issue. I think it is really a desire to punish people that justifies what we do.  I may not be on that wing of public opinion, but what is clear is that you have to carry public opinion with youon an issue like this.  Change from where we are to something more humane, or rather more liberal (as it would now be described) is going to take some time. It is also going to be more difficult to do that in a society where so many of the other structures, in their own way, almost require punishment and offenders.  The rich need the poor, the good need the bad, the apparently lawful need criminals. You could argue, in a rather nasty way, we don’t actually want to live in a crime free society.  So if you’ve got an aggressively capitalist society with great divergence of wealth, it is probably inevitable that you are going to want to punish, or will punish, those who offend the implied values of such a society.  Maybe as long as you’ve got a society that , since the 1960s has believed in all aspects of sexual liberalism, it is in some curious and perverse way particularly hard on those who transgress what is left of the law on sexual control.  Mary Whitehouse may well be shown, in due course, to have been right.  More and more people may be thinking it wasn’t quite so good to create a sexually liberal society, one of the consequences of which is that people had to do more thing to temper it.

Critic Viv Groskop - who was born a stone's throw away from Chawton, where Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice - reviews. Stephen Poliakoff, writer of Caught On A Train and Shooting The Past, reflects on his controversial debut TV drama Hitting Town, which was made in 1975 and is released on DVD for the first time. Written when he was 23, the TV play made headlines when Mary Whitehouse campaigned for it to be banned, appalled by its storyline about a brother and sister who embark on an incestuous affair. Poliakoff reveals his own sister's reaction to Hitting Town and his other incest drama Close My Eyes. Australian author Hannah Kent's debut novel Burial Rites tells the story of the last woman executed in Iceland. Set in the winter of 1829 and including real court documents, the book combines Nordic noir with cold case fiction. Kent describes how she first heard about the story when visiting Iceland as a teenager and what drew her to write about the case a decade later.
