*This episode mentions violence and may be triggering for some listeners.*  This week, we talk with Matt Forté, a former NFL running back who played ten years with the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets. Beyond his impressive career on the field, Matt has transitioned into roles as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and ministry worker. Matt shares his inspiring story, from his early days in football to his work in gun violence prevention and support for at-risk families. Later in the episode, we'll also be joined by comedian Jonnie W., who shares why he believes in the value of laughter. Known for his unique blend of stand-up comedy and music, Jonnie's approach to comedy is not just about making people laugh, but also about bringing light and positivity into the world.   Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Bethany Hamilton Upcoming interview: Hannah Brencher Jesus Calling commemorative edition   Matt Forté Hurricane Katrina  Tulane University What's Your Forté Foundation  Tuskegee Next My Hair Can   Jonnie W. It taught me a lot.” - Matt Forté “Put in a lot of hard work, but also have faith in yourself and really have faith in God that He is a good God, that He has good plans for you as well.” - Matt Forté “Had it not been for Jesus coming down and dying for our sins and living a sinless life and paying the debt for what we've accumulated, there would be no hope. And in return, we have to reflect the hope that He's given us.” - Matt Forté   “I think there's something formative about that that kind of clicks in a comedian's brain, that extra little bump of attention that you get from someone laughing or you kind of push someone's buttons in a way. There's something about that that is pretty remarkable.” - Jonnie W.  “I like to think about the people that are coming to my shows and what private pain they might have, what they might need release from. My comedy comes from a place of faith. I feel like it's such a gift that I discovered that I could do this and that God's opened doors for me to go do it, so I never take it for granted.” - Jonnie W.  “I think you're missing out on something that God wired inside of you if you're not laughing.” - Jonnie W.   ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Virtual gigs, drive-ins, outdoor parking lots ... is this what it has come down to? I discuss the options for comedians with former students Brain Bates and Jonnie W. If 2020 has taught us anything it is this: "adapt or die." There just aren't as many inside gigs as usual. If you want to earn some money you have to get outside your comfort zone. To keep your comedy chops sharp that may include some unconventional settings. This year Brian opened for Nate Bargatze at drive-in theaters. Johnnie W. did a few outdoor shows. I am doing more and more virtual gigs. It's not going to be the same as a packed comedy club. That's okay. Those aren't happening right now. Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2018 50:36

Today I am joined by former School of Laughs students and full time comedians Jonnie W.and Brian Bates. Over some tasty BBQ we discuss the recent happenings in the world of comedy. Specifically, Michelle Wolfe and the White House Correspondents Dinner, Netflix Comedy Specials and the passing of a fellow comedian. THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY PATREON SUPPORTER NEIL RITTLEAND THE CLEAN COMEDY CHALLENGE.   You would think that an occupation such as comedy would be relatively stress-free. After all, it's all about the laughs, right? Well, sort of yes and sort of no. You see every joke has a target. I could be the traffic, the drivers, the car or the police. Sometimes, the comedian hits on a target and the reaction is bigger than the joke. Or, even an unintended response from a misinterpreted punch line. Other times, the comedian is challenged for not being "sensitive" or "politically correct" with their material. Despite freedom of speech, as comedian is not free form judgement.   In today's world, we are quick to celebrate the mistakes of others. Comedy is no different. It makes it hard for the comedian to do their job when every word is picked apart and mass distributed over a network of trigger-happy-texters and social media rabble-rousers. What is a comic to do?   The three of us share our takes on  Michelle Wolfe  and the 2018  White House Correspondents Dinner  roast. The good, bad and ugly as well as the reaction, opportunity and results.   Also on the agenda is a quick discussion about the proliferation of NETFLIXcomedy specials. Is having so many specials good or bad for the comedy marketplace? Are great comedians putting out subpar specials just to grab a handful of cash? Am I only mad because I don't have a NETFLIX special?   And, finally, we talk about the long-lasting feeling of connection to other comedians. When one of our own passes away, we feel like we just saw them yesterday. But, we may not have worked with or talked to them in over a decade. What is it about the brotherhood and sisterhood of comedy that connects us? All of this and more in this episode of the Rik Roberts School of Laughs! Today I am joined by Jonnie W. and Brian Bates to discuss our best and worst of 2017. We kick it off with the worst shows because let’s face it that is more interesting! As years change we find ourselves reflecting back on the good, the bad, and the ugly. Regardless of how hard you plan ahead there’ll always be a few surprises along the way. Even after 26 years as a full-time Comedian there are surprises. That is what makes it a fun career. We talk about the value of a great and commanding introduction. And how a lack of one can set you up for failure. Rick wonders allowed if one of his speeches resulted in the firing of the one who hired him. Brian Bates just got out of jail. And lots of guys there thanked him for visiting. We also talk about what lies ahead in 2018. Each of us have set forth a goal for the new year. From writing more biblically-based material, to being more fearless, we establish a target for the year ahead. So what was your best and worst of 2017? I would love to hear from you about your successes and failures. And what is your goal for 2018? Comment below, or send an email to schooloflaughs@gmail.com. Let me know if I can read them on the air. Do you want to get more laughs in 2018? Maybe your writing needs to be punched up. Or maybe you just need to get started from scratch. Check out the online writing class available or attend one of the live courses in Nashville. Half the battle is knowing what not to do. The other half is developing great habits early in your career. There is no need to go it alone when there are so many resources available online. Whether it is my course or another one do yourself a favor and save many years of frustration by looking at the roadmap first. THIS EPISODE: The infamous Jonnie W. Lots of comedy talk that's interesting to us and probably pretty dull for Pkarlgh but that's what happens when we don't operate with a script, or goals or even common sense. It's a phone call so Jonnie sounds very much like a Cylon (which isn't a bad thing, really.)   It all started with 8 minutes of hell. And went downhill from there. (I made up that second part.)  Jonnie and I talk a lot of "shop" in this episode. We get a brief "origins" story and then it's all comedy.    Comedy often comes from shy, insecure people. Jonnie W. is no exception. Awkwardness is dreadful if you can't laugh past it. Introverts and reclusive personalities seem to gravitate toward stand-up. Which is awkward...   Remember the groundswell of Christian comedy that swept the country a few decades back?  No?  That's because that never happened.   There's some secret talk about what happens on the Tim Hawkins tour bus.   Then we talk more about writing material, making our families laugh, insecurity and joy.   We try out some raw comedy from our notebooks. Raw comedy is always...raw.   Then it's over...   Go see Jonnie W's website: www.jonniew.com   Also...here's a little bit of the amazing David Kaplan (whom I discussed on the podcast) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3cANK1VJlo

This "3 NEW JOKES" episode is brought to you by Patreon sponsor Jeana Medlin. To learn how you can support the podcast, visit www.SchoolOfLaughs.com/Patreon. We follow up last week's premise session with Jonnie W. and Brian Bates. They both pop back by the headquarters with audio clips. Last week's premises are now jokes. But, how solid are they? We listen to Jonnie's clip about Church Nurseries and wonder ... Would this joke work as a cold opener? Is it okay to drop babies on their head? Can the set-up be little shorter? We listen to Brian's clip about Critters and wonder ... Is there a t-shirt idea sitting in the punch line? Could the joke concept be a book? Where can we take it next? We listen to my clip about 3D Printers and ponder ... Do I really need to ask the audience a question to set it up? Am I putting myself in the audience's shoes? What is the next direction for the joke? In all, we each learned that our instincts were fairly in tune with our choice of wording and  phrasing in the initial joke. We also discovered that sometime pausing and giving the audience a chance to think can lead to a bigger laugh. We welcome your input and ideas as well. Feel free to send any ideas for these jokes to SchoolOfLaughs@gmail.com and I'll pass it along to the fellas. DVD PROJECT FOLLOW UP We also follow up with Jonnie W. about his DVD project. What went right? What went wrong? Where could he have better spent his money? How did the IndieGoGo aspect work out? And much more. Very insightful and honest info that can help you in your next project. To order Jonnie's DVD of CD, visit www.JonnieW.com. This episode is brought to you by Patreon sponsor Kevin Hardy! Today I am joined by former students (and now full time comedians) Jonnie W. and Brian Bates. We frequently hangout and run jokes and ideas past each others. I thought we should record this and let you in on the process. It's not rocket science. But, it is insightful to see how different people find humor in different areas of a premise. The premise is the absolute most important part of your joke. It is the horse that the laughs rode in on. It is the structure that the bit is built upon. It's the tree limb that helps bear the fruit of funny. After we clarify our premises we walk through ideas for punch lines, tags and other sub-premises that the idea can lead to. It is a fun time. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ON THE PODCAST? I am looking for a few listeners who have new premises they would like to brainstorm. If you have the ability to RECORD your set, I would love to have you on the show! We will brainstorm over a Google Hangout, then you will need to bring back an audio clip within two weeks to include in the show. Next week we will follow up with results from this session. We each will bring in a recording of the joke in front of a live audience. After we listen we will trouble shoot any dead spots and see if we can add some more to each joke. We welcome your input and ideas as well. Feel free to send any ideas for these jokes to SchoolOfLaughs@gmail.com and I'll pass it along to the fellas. We did it. You did it. I did it. It was done. What is IT? 100 episodes! Woo hoo! This episode of the School Of Laughs podcast is brought to you by Chelle Baxter, Peter Margaritas, Sandi Joy Chadwick and John Charlton - thanks! It is crazy to think that a couple of years ago we started this journey together. When we did, I had no idea that we would make it to 100 episodes of the School Of Laughs podcast. I hoped to. Just didn't know if it was going to be something I could pull off. What a ride! With help from Gavin Miller, the ball got rolling and rolling and ... I've learned a lot! Hopefully you have as well. We've listened to jokes go from the brainstorming phase to the stage. We've talked with Letterman comics like Jeff Caldwell, Keith Alberstadt and Andy Hendrickson. We heard from Tonight Show regular Nate Bargatze and his dad Stephen. Comedy Central comedians Robert Mac, Luis Ramey and Pat McGann also shared insights. Seasoned veterans Jeff Jena, Jeff Allen and Dan Swartout also shared many golden nuggets of information about becoming a comedian. We also heard from folks who write for TV like Martha Bolton and Scott Dunn. We learned booking tips from Tim Grable and Midwest Clean Comedy. We know now what it takes to record a CD, and a DVD as well as how to put on your own shows. Former students (Monty Mitchell, Jonnie W., Brian Bates, Chris Cherry, Mike James, and Paulina Combow) stopped by to share their successes. WOW. So where do we go from here? The plan is to continue for the next three months and see if there is enough interest and support through PATREON (see below) to continue. If so, we will lock in for another full year. If not, we will ride on into the sunset and sleep well knowing we gave it our all. On today's episode, I reflect back on the past year and what lies ahead. Specifically, I talk about: The Broken record Comedy Show with Chad Riden Listener feedback emails from YOU the listener What it takes to put together a podcast My favorite episodes from the first 100 We check in with Gavin Miller And a lot more. Thank you so much for listening and I hope to continue to provide you with beneficial information and tactical strategies for becoming BIGGER, BETTER and MORE BOOKABLE! Support the podcast through PATREON A listener recently told me about Patreon and I totally love this concept. In a nutshell, in exchange for a small RECURRING monthly donation of your choice, you gain access to many extra opportunities to interact with the show. My favorite bonus is our very own, private “School Of Laughs Patreon News Feed”. Think of it as a Facebook page without all the drama. In this feed I will post exclusive articles, bonus podcasts and more. And of course, you will be invited to share ideas and support other listeners of the show! The funds would help offset the costs associated with time incurred producing the show, and at the same time give you more of what I believe you find valuable. It's up to you as far as the amount. We average 4 episodes a month and are hoping you feel like the information is worth at least $1.25 a show. So, a monthly pledge of $5 is our hope. More is great, less is still helpful. If we reach the target of 200 patrons (which is just a fraction of the overall listener downloads per episode), I think we would be on track to continue the production of the show and creating opportunities for you to grow as a performer and see definite returns on your support. In short, I want to continue to provide the podcast and reach out to bigger names, more helpful comics and incredible resources. Please VISIT www.SchoolOfLaughs.com/Patreon or www.Patron.com/SchoolOfLaughs   to find out more.

068 BRIAN REGAN COMEDY CENTRAL LIVE WAS AWESOME [podcast]

School Of Laughs

Comedy Central's first ever LIVE stand-up comedy broadcast was a huge success. WHY? Because they turned the keys over to master comedian Brian Regan and he took us on a fun drive. Some of us he left off at "the next exit", but for those who stayed on board it was awesome. As any comedian knows, performing is like walking a high wire. One little slip and the whole show can go careening off track. Add to that a packed house, television cameras, and no edits ... and you've got a circus act even P. T. Barnum himself would pay to see. Brian Regan was definitely the man for the job. TV clean? Check. Energetic and enjoyable? Check. Skilled and able? Check. Funny? Double check, underline and circle. No doubt about it. With over 30 years of stage experience, the youngest 57 year old in the world gave new comics a clinic on how to put on a show. Specifically, he demonstrated: Excellent material choices Well crafted routines Steady pacing Precision timing Vocal variety Surprising twists Engaging facial expressions Deliberate set structure and ... need I mention sticking to his time? In a broadcast with a lot on the line Brian Regan delivered. Listen in to a discussion of the event with Jonnie W. and Gavin Miller and myself. Let us know what you thought about the performance. What did we miss? Send your thoughts to schooloflaughs@gmail.com. Also in this podcast we "FIX A JOKE". Thanks Eli Lebowizc Twitter @EliLebowicz, Facebook and EliComedy.com.
