It shouldn't come as a surprise that Old, the latest thriller from the endlessly inventive — if not always successful — director M. Night Shyamalan, has critics divided. Some argue the film features an intriguing concept, but its execution is extremely flawed. Others call it an entertaining thought exercise from one of Hollywood's most invigorating filmmakers that is never, not fun. Love him or hate him, as cinephiles, we can at least admire how Shyamalan has adjusted to the ebb and flow of his career by self-financing when the money isn't there. Old is in every respect, an M. Night film— written, directed, funded, and produced by the man himself— and that folks, is enough reason to spend 60 minutes discussing the movie, even if some of us absolutely hate it.

In 2016, M Night made a huge return by bringing fans back to the beloved Unbreakable universe with Split. Surely he didn't immediately ruin all of that good will by going back to his old ways. Right? Right?!

Manish Mathur (@TheManish89) returns with his podcast celebrating the genre films of M. Night Shyamalan! Philadelphia's genre king returns with the trippy horror thriller Old, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, and Ken Leung! Manish is joined by Shaurya Chawla (@_ShauryaChawla) to discuss the film, first spoiler free then diving deep into the twists and reveals!
Manoj Nelliyattu, "M. Night" Shyamalan has had one of Hollywood's most interesting stories that could well have come from one of his scripts. After two independent movies which amounted to little success, Shyamalan set the world afire with 1999's The Sixth Sense, which took critics off guard, gathering six Academy Award nominations and rolling to an almost $700 million box office take, making it the most successful horror film all the way until 2017, when It finally knocked it off. But after a financial and critical success such as that, where do you go from there? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Michael Guarnieri as we take the journey to answering that question, which we begin with The Sixth Sense and will eventually lead to Shyamalan's new film Old, scheduled for release this July. It's finally here. After seven months of build up, Old, the cultivation of the Binge Movie Aftertaste M Night Shyamalan Retrospective, has hit theaters. But it almost didn't. After reading the graphic novel Sand Castle, which was given to him by his daughter, Shyamalan saw a story both in the book and out of it that he wanted to tell. But road blocks, which came in the form of everything from Covid to hurricanes, were in his way. But M Night persevered. And the question is, is the result of all that work made by the M Night who had an ego the size of the ocean in this movie? Or is this humbled M Night, a man who is still trying to prove himself after being beaten down by both audiences and critics alike? And how much will Matt hate it? After all, we know what resulted the last time M Night adapted someone else's work. Listen below as our Old review is finally here. And be sure to keep listening to the end as we reveal some things that are coming up on this show later on in the year (yes that was a hint). Old (2021) (?/10, ?/10, ?/10) CLICK ABOVE TO LISTEN NOW! After his foray into creating a superhero cinematic universe, M. Night Shyamalan is back to his bread and butter — spine-tingling chillers — with Old, the movie about how seaside resorts and beach vacations are the absolute worst. A family goes on vacation, discovers a beach that causes everyone to age unnaturally fast, and encounters many other obstacles that can't be divulged due to spoilers. Wade and Kevin take a look to find out where Old fits into Shyamalan's checkered career and determine just how many years will be taken off their lives by the end of this week's episode. With Split being a massive success, our buddy M Night decided it was finally time to close out the trilogy he had been drawing the foundations of for almost two decades. Armed with a 'best of' the M Night Eastrail 777 Trilogy' cast at his disposal (as well as the eager to work with M Night Sarah Paulson) Shyamalan set forth on ending the journey these characters had taken to finally meet. But with two successes behind him, would this once again be a humbled M Night? Or will the ego driven monster behind The Last Airbender and The Happening once again rear his ugly head like The Beast does in this film? Join myself, Matt, and Mike as we once again dive into the mind of M Night Shyamalan with this review of Glass. And be sure to stay till the end, as we take one final set of predictions of what we are going to expect once we step forth into the theater (yay!) and finally get to see Old, which will be our very next review! M. Night Shyamalan is one of the few Hollywood directors working today who qualifies as a household name. But what reputation does that name now carry? Since bursting into the public eye with his third feature, the Oscar-nominated box-office phenomenon The Sixth Sense, Shyamalan has experienced ups and downs, disappointments and comebacks. Today, he's sometimes treated like an industry punchline and punching bag, even as his movies continue to do good business and satisfy a faithful critical fanbase. On this week's episode of Film Club, A.A. Dowd and Katie Rife discuss the career of this divisive blockbuster auteur, whose latest thriller, Old, is now playing in theaters.Visit: https://www.avclub.com/Like: https://www.facebook.com/theavclubFollow: https://twitter.com/theavclubSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's a busy spring break week for everyone as Mikey is busy eating and #TwitterlessDrEarl is in Long Island testifying at a lint removal procedure gone wrong trial and Dave is out of the state, so rather than trying to get a rushed show together, they guys are taking the week off. This week, the show pays homage to our good friends over at TechnoRetro Dads, who's own show is ending. This Deucecast Classic is from May 2018, episode 327. Enjoy the old school vibe, and here are the original show notes from that episode: It's a couple of guys who keep their heads in the clouds and gaze at the stars, so it's only fitting that Dave and Mikey discuss Fantasy and Science Fiction films. But since #Twitterless Dr Earl can't be found (he's doing a lint removal procedure from the naval of poor kids in Long Island), who better to invite onto the show than the TechnoRetro Dads themselves, Shazbazzar and Jedi Shuuuuuuuuaaaaahhhhhh.... And the gang jumps right in, counting off their lists of what they consider to be their favorite fantasy/sci-fi films of this century... that's really anything released on January 1st, 2000, until... well, you know, today. Or the day of the recording, anyway. The TRD's also give their take on "Ready Player One" before diving into the Top Ten, then the guys discuss at length -- and at depth -- the legacy and their adoration of films like "Children of Men" and the newest "Star Trek" and newer "Star Wars" films and Shaz defends "John Carter" while Dave defends "Lady in the Water". Its a great two hours of sci fi fantasy fun and movie love!
