Most men don't grieve by sitting in circles and talking about feelings. They grieve by working harder, staying busy, isolating, or pushing pain down until it shows up as anger, anxiety, exhaustion, or illness. In this powerful episode of Men Talking Mindfulness, Will Schneider and Jon Macaskill sit down with Michelle Ann Collins—grief coach, mindfulness teacher, and survivor of profound loss—to explore how men actually process grief and why “try harder” is not a plan.Michelle shares her personal journey through her husband's suicide, PTSD, dissociation, and recovery through somatic, body-based mindfulness. Together, they unpack why men are conditioned to suppress grief, how shame and regret keep men stuck, and why embodied practices—not forced emotional expression—are often the safest entry point into healing. This conversation offers real tools men can use in their truck, at work, or at home—without needing to relive the trauma or perform vulnerability. In this episode, you'll hear:• Why men and women feel grief similarly but process it differently• How action-style grief shows up as overworking, isolation, or emotional shutdown• Why suppressing grief often leads to anxiety, panic, illness, or burnout• How embodied mindfulness helps men stay present without dissociation• What post-traumatic growth actually looks like in real life• A simple grounding practice men can use anywhere• How to move from the grief cave toward meaning without rushing the processIf you're a man carrying loss silently—or supporting someone who is—this episode offers a grounded, compassionate path forward.Sponsor:Peptides for Health by Mark L. In this solo episode of Men Talking Mindfulness, Jon Macaskill steps out from behind conversation and into the quiet honesty of being alone—speaking directly to men who carry responsibility well, but carry it alone. This episode explores the lie of self-sufficiency: how being capable, disciplined, and dependable can look like strength on the outside, yet slowly drain connection, presence, and emotional health on the inside.Jon shares personal reflections from his own life—marriage, leadership, military service, and fatherhood—and names the patterns many men never question: staying busy instead of honest, managing instead of connecting, and confusing endurance with strength. You'll hear why self-sufficiency works… until it doesn't.Why loneliness doesn't always look like isolation. And why many men don't break down—they simply flatten out.In this episode, Jon explores:• Why self-sufficiency is praised, rewarded, and rarely questioned• How high-functioning men slowly lose emotional access without realizing it• The difference between being self-sufficient and being self-contained• How control, busyness, and “being fine” become survival strategies• Why asking for help isn't weakness—it's capacity awareness• Small, realistic shifts that don't require becoming someone you're notThis episode isn't about fixing men or dismantling masculinity. It's about telling the truth—and offering a way to stop carrying everything alone. If you're a man who's still functioning, still providing, still showing up—but feels distant, irritable, or quietly exhausted—this episode is for you. You'll walk away with:-Language to understand what you're actually carrying-Permission to stop confusing endurance with health-Simple awareness tools that interrupt the pattern early-A reminder that connection doesn't require collapseSponsor:Peptides for Health by Mark L. Dr. Mark L. Gordon is an endocrinologist in Magnolia, Texas. He received his medical degree from Universidad de Guadalajara and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Endocrinologists treat hormone-related conditions, which most commonly include diabetes, thyroid disease, pituitary gland issues and hormonal imbalances. Since 2004, Dr. Mark Gordon has spearheaded the application of the science now being used to address and treat individuals suffering with neuropsychiatric illnesses brought on by trauma and mental stress. The insidious damage caused by traumatic brain injury has emerged from the shadows and is receiving the medical focus it requires. Much of this change has occurred due to two of the main victims of traumatic brain injury—soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and impact sports that include football and boxing. Of course, civilians also incur traumatic brain injury from automobile accidents, falls, and assaults. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 3 to 5 millionAmericans are living with traumatic brain injury-related disability. Current medical practice has little to provide these victims, who may go on to suffer cognitive problems ranging from dizziness and headaches to depression and dementia throughout their lifetime. Mark Gordon, MD, has successfully treated both veterans and civilians with traumatic brain injury by restoring neurosteroid levels. Working with veterans who have sustained significant combat injuries to the brain, Dr. Gordon has restored wholeness to their lives. Hopefully, his innovative work with neurosteroids will find its way into mainstream medicine to help the millions suffering with traumatic brain injury. https://asm-foundation.com Pete DePrez PTSD is an injury, not an illness. It is curable if we treat it as such. For over sixty years our medical community has approached PTSD with SSRI's (anti-depressants), which are virtual cortisone shots for our brains. SSRI's do not address causation of injury, nor do they address legitimate healing. So, a person diagnosed with PTSD will likely be relegated to a lifetime of SSRI's and talk therapy. We have teamed with Dr. Mark L. Gordon to provide life changing treatment to get our veterans and first responders back to living the life they had before suffering their trauma. We also support a number of other methods. The reality is that this isn't a quick fix; sort of like any injury. It can take 1-2 months to truly feel the benefits of hormone therapy. MeRT, ketamine, MDMA and other treatment methods should be combined to ensure the best results for each individual. ASM will work with each of our clients individually to determine what their needs are. If you are a veteran or first responder in need of help, please reach out to us. If you are a family member who is seeking assistance or information, please reach out. If you are a citizen willing to donate, please do so on the donations page. What does Millennium do differently? (17:35) How important is diet? Does it affect the success of treatment? (22:45) What is Clear Mind and Energy? How is it able to curb my caffeine consumption? Can caffeine cause more inflammation? (30:50) How does the medical community respond to his message? A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a complex and convoluted process that leads to the disruption of brain function. The initial injury, can be represented by traumatic or non-traumatic injuries. In traumatic injuries there is a transfer of physical energy from outside the individual to the inside which might be represented by blunt head trauma as in an assault, blast wave trauma from an IED, acceleration-decceleration injury as in a motor vehicle accident or a fall, and repetitive impact injury as in boxing, gunfire, football, and even skiing. Non-traumatic injuries can be precipitated by chronic stress, certain medications, x-rays, surgical procedures, viral and bacterial infections, auto-immune illnesses, and inflammatory bowel diseases to name a few. Regardless of the causation, the effect is the turning on of cells in the brain called Microglia. These are the main immune cells in the brain that protects us from infections and help to keep our brain clear from the accumulation of by-products of cellular metabolism, death, and bad chemistry. Over time, the inflammation generated can affect your cognitive and emotional health which is associated with poor short and long-term memory, emotional lability and one or more mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bi-polar disorder. Recent scientific literature is making the association of these inflammatory cytokines with all formed of neurodegenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).   Originally residency trained and board certified in Family Medicine (1984), Dr. Mark L. Gordon continued his medical education in Clinical Orthopedics (1990), Cosmetic Dermatology (1993), and Sports Medicine. His book, The Clinical Application of Interventional Medicine (2008), is recognized by his peers as a primer for the standards of care and assessment for Interventional Endocrinology (anti-aging medicine). He is currently the Medical Director of CBS Studios (2001-date), and has also participated on projects with HBO, ESPN, CNN, FOX, Good Morning, and a number of international news programs. Dr. Gordon has appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience (#438, #574, #700, #1056) to discuss Traumatic Brain Injury associated hormonal dysfunction syndrome which generated national and international interest. In May 2015, his book Traumatic Brain Injury – A clinical approach to diagnosis and treatment, was launched along with a three-day workshop attended by an international and national group of medical specialists seeking advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of TBI. Dr. Mark Gordon is the owner and Medical Director of Millennium-TBI, located in Encino, California.   Learn more about what Dr. Gordon is doing at: WWW.TBIHELPNOW.ORG

Andrew Marr is a Special Forces Green Beret Veteran and the founder of the Warrior Angels Foundation.  Andrew also recently wrote the book Tales from the Blast Factory, chronicling the ways in which his life was affected by Traumatic Brain Injury and the road to recovery he took using a unique therapy delivered by Dr. Mark Gordon.  That book was recently turned into a documentary called Quiet Explosions with the help of Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jerri Sher.  LOGLINE  Traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts 2 million people per year. Professional athletes, military, veterans, and first-responders share their recovery stories after suffering severe PTSD and depression. Joe Rogan and Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien, NFL running back Anthony Davis and Ben Driebergen, Marine veteran and winner of CBS's 35th “Survivor” season, are featured in this enlightening documentary.   SYNOPSIS Special Forces Green Beret, Andrew Marr, returned from his third deployment, a quietly broken man. The explosives expert suffered a multitude of concussions while detonating hundreds of blasts in Afghanistan. Unable to cope with his illness, he fell into a spiral of drug and alcohol abuse; even contemplating suicide at one point. When it was nearly too late, he met Neuroendocrinologist Dr. Mark L. Gordon, who properly diagnosed his condition as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Since then, Gordon has been helping veterans impacted by Post Traumatic Syndrome (PTS)and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)through the Warrior Angels Foundation founded by Adam and Andrew Marr and supported by podcast personality Joe Rogan. Professional athletes Mark Rypien (Washington Redskins Super Bowl XXVI MVP) and Anthony Davis (running back USC, Tampa Bay Buccaneers), candidly share their methods of coping with TBI and PTS, which they experienced from repetitive blows to the brain. Renowned big wave surfer Shawn Dollar and Ben Driebergen, a Marine veteran and winner of CBS's 35th “Survivor” season, reveal their struggles toward brain health. A former gymnast, a 9/11 first responder, and the victim of military sexual trauma (MST) offer insights into their healing process from the disease which is estimated to have impacted 80 million people in the past 40 years. Andrew Marr is a Husband, Father, Entrepreneur, former Special Forces Green Beret, founder of Warrior Angels Foundation, and current patient of Dr. Mark L. Gordon. Marr's last deployment in 2013 was emotionally and physically taxing. He and his Special Forces team were engaged in constant combat throughout its entirety. Marr suffered numerous traumatic brain injuries from explosions, which resulted in his medical retirement.  When Marr returned to the states he began a 6-month spiral downward. Once an elite performer in life or death situations in combat, Marr couldn't even remember how to drive home. He was plagued by psychological, physiological, and physical manifestations, including depression, outbursts of anger, anxiety, mood swings, memory loss, inability to concentrate, learning disabilities, sleep deprivation, loss of libido, loss of lean body mass, muscular weakness, alcohol, developed a massive deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) that broke off into both lungs (bi-lateral pulmonary embolism), and a number of other medically documented conditions. What are the challenges veterans are met with when it comes to dealing with TBIs? How is the current healthcare system getting it wrong, and what changes can we expect under a new administration? On this episode, Andrew Marr talks about this and the Warrior Angel Foundation. Doctors can get rid of inflammation and balance hormones, but if you continue to think unnerving thoughts that produce the same results, you’ve just made a feedback loop that is not going to improve itself. -Andrew Marr Three Takeaways TBIs are a two-phase injury firstly, the initial blunt force trauma or explosive blast, and secondly post traumatic neuro-inflammation. You have to be in a neuro-permissive environment for the brain and body to regenerate.  If you’re not in that environment, you’re in an environment of restriction and that’s the mother of all the problems we’re seeing. We can strengthen national security by keeping high performing individuals where they need to be. At the start of the show, we talked about Andrew’s background and his personal experience with a TBI. He also gave us some insight into TBIs and the necessity of putting people in neuro-permissive environments. We went onto discuss the current state of the system that’s meant to help veterans and the solutions the Warrior Angel Foundation provides. Towards the end of the show, we discussed changes under the new administration. People need to be able to be optimized. There needs to be a system in place with protocols, that can help people get better, stronger and more physically optimal. This rings especially true for the military medical model. Systems need to be put in place to promote neuro-plasticity, and help them heal and experience full lives.
