Dr. Berkson highlights how progesterone supports brain function, immunity, cardiovascular health, nerve repair, and gut integrity and explains how chronic stress and environmental toxins contribute to widespread progesterone deficiency, even in young people. She also challenges outdated hormone practices and stresses the importance of maintaining optimal levels throughout life. Dr. Sherr clarifies how progesterone enhances the calming neurotransmitter GABA, explaining that as progesterone declines, GABA activity drops, leading to anxiety, sleep issues, and mood changes. He recommends natural ways to support GABA and highlights the benefits of using safe, plant-based modulators instead of alcohol or sedatives that deplete GABA and can cause dependency. In our discussion, we delve into hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), examining what it is, how it works, and its effects on cellular senescence. We discuss what HBOT is, its impact on immune function, inflammation, stem cell activation, and oxygen, as well as its anti-infective properties and relative contraindications for HBOT treatment modalities. We also explore epigenetics and DNA expression, the effects of methylene blue, the specific indications and neurocognitive benefits of HBOT therapy, and its critical importance for recovery from infections, radiation injuries, tissue regeneration, sudden hearing loss, osteomyelitis, and other conditions. This insightful conversation with Dr. Sherr is filled with vital information, so you will likely want to listen to it more than once. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How does HBOT work? Dr. Sherr describes the acute and long-term physical effects of HBOT. How HBOT increases stem cells, reduces inflammation, and boosts the immune system. How HBOT can decrease senescent cell populations, increase telomere length, improve cardiac function, and stimulate blood vessel regrowth Why clinicians must assess the acuity and chronicity of a condition before recommending HBOT therapy The importance of improving diet and lifestyle to optimize the body for HBOT therapy The benefits of low-dose methylene blue for mitochondrial support How carbohydrates support workout performance and recovery Dr. Sherr explains the different levels of hyperbaric therapy and their benefits. Recently there has been a plethora of articles painting the popular supplement methylene blue in a bad light. Some of the claims include: its synthetic so that makes it unsafe, it will stain your brain permanently blue, it will cause excessive serotonin in the brain, and that it could decrease mitochondrial function in people with healthy mitochondria, or that it can inhibit nitric oxide.  Dr Scott Sherr, COO of Troscriptions, returns to the show to debunk these arguments using sound science and reason. I have been ingesting methylene blue for five years now with some breaks and I have experienced zero negative side effects, both short or long term. Fear and sensationalism gets engagement and it also provides an opportunity to deepen the conversation with more context which Scott does in this episode. I'm excited to share my conversation with Dr. Scott Sherr, where we dive deep into methylene blue - a compound you've probably seen all over social media lately (those blue tongues!). As someone whose primary research focuses on Alzheimer's disease, I was fascinated to explore the science behind this molecule that dates back to the 1870s and was actually the first drug registered with the FDA in 1897.  The most fascinating insight for me was learning how methylene blue can serve as an electron acceptor in our mitochondria - essentially functioning as a substitute for oxygen when our cells are under stress. This explains why it shows promise for everything from traumatic brain injury to cognitive enhancement and even as a potential alternative to stimulant medications.   If you're interested in optimizing brain performance, understanding mitochondrial health, or simply curious about this blue compound that's suddenly everywhere, this episode provides both the scientific foundation and practical applications you need. Subscribe to The Neuroscience Experience for more conversations at the intersection of brain science and performance. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have long been used for acute issues such as strokes and brain injuries—but can they be used for chronic conditions as well? This week, I'm joined by Dr. Scott Sherr, an internal medicine physician certified in hyperbaric oxygen therapy. We sat down to discuss what makes this chamber "a wound healer from the inside out" as well as the proper protocols one should follow before even considering oxygen therapy for chronic issues. In this episode, you'll discover: The Benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): As soon as you step into the hyperbaric chamber, your body works to reoxygenate the cells in low-oxygen tissue. In the long term, not only does the body rebuild damaged blood vessels, but you can also expect to see a decrease in inflammation and swelling, an enhancement of the immune system, and lymphatic and detoxification optimization.  Having a Healthy Foundation Is Key: "You want to get some of that foundational stuff working before you start stressing the system with oxygen," says Dr. Sherr. This includes having the right vitamins, minerals, and nutrients required to detoxify and create energy or ATP effectively. "The challenge in the hyperbaric world is that we don't think about these things as much," he adds. HBOT's Role In Cancer Treatment: Dr. Sherr uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy in conjunction with other interventions, such as vitamin C IVs and a ketogenic diet, as a way to support and sensitize people for chemotherapy and radiation.  What Methylene Blue Does: In terms of supplemental support, Dr. Sherr turns to methylene blue, which helps optimize the mitochondria—the parts of the cells that produce ATP—while promoting detoxification at the same time, which the internal medicine physician calls "very unusual." He opts for low doses of the supplement to avoid potentially causing oxidative stress in the body. 05:40 Integrative Approach to Hyperbaric Therapy 07:03 Understanding Hyperbaric Therapy Basics 15:41 Physiological Benefits of Hyperbaric Therapy 19:07 Hyperbaric Therapy for Various Conditions 22:58 Hyperbaric Therapy and Cancer 26:27 Types of Hyperbaric Chambers 35:06 The Importance of Foundational Health Before Hyperbaric Therapy 39:36 Personal Experiences and Protocols for Hyperbaric Therapy 42:10 Optimizing Hyperbaric Therapy with Other Modalities 52:19 Methylene Blue: Benefits and Applications Connect with Dr. Myers: Website: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ Newsletter: https://www.amymyersmd.com/ec/guide-to-leaky-gut Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AmyMyersMD Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amymyersmd/ Episode mentioned with Dr. Shai Efrati on HBOT: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1bwEfDrSU5RTpwOkMwYf3L?si=e96668253f504c10 Connect with Dr. Sherr: Website: https://www.hyperbaricmedicalsolutions.com/integrative-hbot/scott-sherr Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe) Practice: https://home-sf.co/ OneBase Health website: https://onebasehealth.com/ Methylene blue product: https://troscriptions.com/pages/team/dr-scott-sherr Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drscottsherr/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drsherr/

Most people don't think about their skin until they have to. The reality is, by the time we notice fine lines, dullness, or inflammation, deeper processes have already been at play for years. But what if your skin isn't just reflecting aging? What if it's reflecting your overall health, stress levels, and even brain function? In this episode of Biohacking Beauty, I sit down with Dr. Scott Sherr to uncover the fascinating connection between your skin and brain, a relationship most people don't even realize exists.
