Tune in as Anna (@banananna024/@formergleek) jumps back into their guest chair for a breakdown of Drive, the 2011 neo-noir crime thriller film about an L.A. stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. Ryan Gosling's auramaxxing, what qualifies as neo-noir, the strange misogyny that's given off by issues like NWR's original goal of casting a porn star as Blanche, and the horrible-person-to-regular-person ratio in Baby Driver comprise some of the talking points for this episode.Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Drive stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, Kaden Leos, James Biberi, Jeff Wolfe, and Russ Tamblyn.Spoilers start at 44:00Nicolas Winding Refn - Drive Q&AHow Ryan Gosling Ended Up in ‘Drive,' According to Director Nicolas Winding RefnCreate your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Anna: The Studio• Arthur: Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee BakerReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree
This is a live recording from Saturday, October 13 at the Chicago Marathon Expo. WRS host Cherie Turner teamed up with Cindy Kuzma of the Starting Line 1928 podcast to co-host a conversation with members of the Native Women Run (NWR) running the 2024 Chicago Marathon—Angel Tadytin, Birdie Wermy, Jessica Louis, and Amber Henderson—along with NWR founder Verna Volker. We heard the running stories of these women: why they run marathons, what inspired them to want to run as part of the NWR team, the importance of representation and community, and what their strategies and goals were for the 2024 Chicago Marathon. The conversation was thoughtful, insightful, and inspiring. Verna Volker is from the Navajo Nation, and she is the founder of NWR. She grew up in the Blanca canyon area of New Mexico, but currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her husband and four children. She founded NWR in January 2018 due to the lack of representation of native women in the running world; her aim is for NWR to create space for and elevate native women runners. Jessica Louis is a Navajo woman from New Mexico. She is a stay-at-home educator, and the Chicago Marathon marks her second 26.2-mile journey. Amber Henderson is from the Turtle Mountain Chippewa tribe in South Dakota, Henderson is a tenured associate professor of management and interim department chair of Finance, Banking and Financial Services, Accounting and Business Law at Northern State University. The 2024 Chicago Marathon was her debut in the distance. Angel Tadytin is also from the Navajo Nation and works as a school social worker. She is also part of the NWR leadership team. The Chicago Marathon was her third marathon, after Boston and NYC. Birdie Wermy is a member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma now residing in Oregon. Wermy serves as a behavioral health project manager at the NW Portland Area Indian Health Board. The 2024 Chicago Marathon was her seventh marathon. Starting Line 1928 is an oral history project dedicated to preserving the stories of women pioneers in distance running. Through longform interviews and profiles, the podcast chronicles their fight to break down barriers and achieve equality. It was founded in 2020 by Cindy Kuzma, Cara Hawkins-Jedlicka, Freddi Carlip, and Johanna Gretschel and is supported by the Theodore Corbitt Institute for Running History Research.

Però laddove Kill Bill era tutta azione e movimento la protagonista di Copenaghen Cowboy, è immobile e ipnotizza.TRANSLATIONCopenhagen Cowboys is a television series that I just finished watching and that left me with a lot of desire to see more. It's by the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, which I'm certainly pronouncing very badly, in any case it doesn't matter, because for some time now he has been signing himself with the three initials NWR.An interesting character, son of art because his father is a director and his mother is a photographer, when he was a child at the age of eight his parents moved to New York and then he returned to Denmark to attend university and at just 25, had made short films, one of which impressed an investor who offered him $32 million to turn the short into a feature film. And then from there the rest is history.Copenhagen Cowboys is a crazy television series, it has hypnotizing photography, music that when is present, is incredibly beautiful and dark, lots of techno music, and when it's not there it's a hiss, or rather, it's a 'hummm' like a drone that accompanies the scenes. There are circular camera movements, the characters practically remain motionless and the camera makes a 360-degree turn, and in fact the characters often speak and aren't even framed. And then it's a triumph of blue and red. Very strong neon colors and everything in between, very purple.Which is an interesting thing because by rummaging through the director's biographical notes, I discovered that he claims to be colorblind. Now, colorblind people fall into three categories: those who do not see the color green, those who do not see the color red and then those who do not recognize the range of colors that goes from blue to violet. I don't know which category the director belongs to. NWR, that's what she calls herself, declares he is colorblind, but all the scenes are characterized by very strong blues, very strong reds and very strong purples and the protagonist of Copenhagen Cowboys, I'm not spoilering anything, it's this girl who wears for practically all six episodes a blue tracksuit and reminds a bit of Kill Bill, remember the yellow tracksuit? But where Kill Bill was all action and movement, the protagonist of Copenhagen Cowboy is motionless and mesmerizing.

Down to Watch is back this week with something a bit experimental from the big red N. Dan and Raul saw some or most of the new Netflix show Copenhagen Cowboy, full of slick synth and burning neon edges as well as bits of misery, magic, and mayhem to flesh out an artistically told tale. The nearly mute Miu has arrived in a particular corner of European hell, as the current denizens refer to it, and seems to be using almost otherworldly powers of perception to process the actions of the flawed, damaged, and depraved that populate her current situation. Fairly quickly in, the guys realize this show is going for some strange angles and hiding some of its more fantastic features but is it enough from the visionary director and Dan's favorite NWR to capture the attention of people skeptical of the pretention? Whatever the answer, at least the guys get to it quickly! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/downtopod/message

Happy Holidays! In this Episode, we recap my recent Texas Public Land hunt along with guest and fellow outdoorsman, Daniel Guillette who also hunted a different National Wildlife Refuge down here in deep South Texas. My co-host Manny Perez also joins in the conversation and offers some great advice for anyone who may draw these types of hunts. Together we recap our hunts, how we prepared. lessons learned, and both of us had encounters with deer and Nilgai. Those who follow me on Social Media, know I shot a Nilgai Bull on this hunt, and I tell the story of how it all went down. These are hunts that anyone can draw and hopefully we can shorten the learning curve for someone who draws an NWR hunt in the future. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.29.518364v1?rss=1 Authors: Thorell, O., Ydrefors, J., Svantesson, M., Gerdle, B., Olausson, H., Mahns, D., Nagi, S. S. Abstract: Introduction: The role of pain as a warning system necessitates a rapid transmission of information from the periphery for the execution of appropriate motor responses. The nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) is a physiological response to protect the limb from a painful stimulus and is often considered an objective measure of spinal nociceptive excitability. The NWR is commonly defined by its latency in the presumed Adelta-fiber range consistent with the canonical view that fast pain is signaled by Adelta nociceptors. We recently demonstrated that human skin is equipped with ultrafast (A beta range) nociceptors. Here, we investigated the short-latency component of the reflex and explored the relationship between reflex latency and pain perception. Methods: We revisited our earlier work on NWR measurements in which, following convention, only those reflex responses were selected that were in the presumed Adelta range (taken to be latencies greater than or equal to 90 ms in that study). In our current analysis, we expanded the time window to search for shorter latency responses and compared those with pain ratings. Results: In both cohorts, we found an abundance of recordings with short-latency reflex responses. In nearly 90% of successful recordings, only single reflex responses (not dual) were seen which allowed us to compare pain ratings to reflex latencies. We found that shorter latency reflexes were just as painful as those in the conventional latency range. Discussion: We found a preponderance of short-latency painful reflex responses. Based on this finding, we suggest that short-latency responses must be considered in future studies. We predict these might be signaled by the ultrafast nociceptors, warranting further investigation.
David Fowler published five volumes taking Florida's U.S. history from pre-territorial to territorial to statehood. It is a reporter's conceit that journalism is the so-called first draft of history. When it comes to the Seminole Wars, it takes some digging into that first draft to determine what information people read at the time of newspaper publication. Chris Kimball has scourged the pages of the Army-Navy Chronicle to identify all references to the Seminole Wars. That was a great task but it was somewhat easier in that the ANC concerned itself with military news. But an even more monumental task comes from examining what other newspapers of the era with a “national” reach reported. Take the Niles Weekly Register. The NWR was a general interest publication that included military news. A collection of just the Florida news comes from scholar David Fowler's five (!) volume Niles' Florida. Niles' Florida provides a comprehensive analysis of the dramatic and, often times, violent history of Florida, beginning with the role it played in the War of 1812, moving through an in-depth view of the Seminole Indian wars, and culminating with the admission of Florida into the American Union. Niles' Florida contains numerous anecdotes and narratives on events that played a key role in the transition of a wild territory, as described by Andrew Jackson, to become 27th state in our American Union. Detailed information is available on the activities of the Seminole Indians, Africans, British, Spanish, and Americans. Living the experiences of Florida's birth through the eyes of the people who were there, is the best history lesson you may ever get. This project began for David Fowler when he visited an Indian mount in Fort Walton Beach, Florida and picked up a pamphlet that referenced a Black Seminole called Abraham, sense keeper for Micanopy. He was intrigued by this Abraham and sought to find more; David had caught the research bug. In due time, he volunteered for a task of not only identifying but also republishing every single article or reference about Abraham as presented in the Niles Weekly Register. He expanded it to cover all of Florida history referenced in the Register, including great coverage of the long Seminole Wars. Newspaper illustration from a photograph of Abraham In a series of volumes, David comprehensively traces and recovers what then-contemporary readers learned in real time about the progress of those regrettable conflicts. He combined his professions as a reporter, a librarian, and a historian to paint a unique picture of the birth and development of the Sunshine State. Its history unfolds like current events leading readers to turn the pages and discover even more. David Fowler joins us to discuss the monumental undertaking. Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. A military historian, he holds masters degrees in Public History, Communication, and Homeland Security, and is a graduate of the US Army War College with an advanced degree in strategic studies.

So, Milo wants to go clean... NWR wraps up his deep dive into the seedy underbelly of the Copenhagen drug world. This time, we're following the bad guy from the first film! Milo has grown a conscience. He's trying to be the good family man. No drugs. Stay calm. Can he stick with that? (spoiler: no. ...omg, no)
Joe DeVader of NWR, Smashterpieces, and Original Soundchat joins John and Neal for the first time in a long time. John and Joe have now joined Neal in the hallowed halls of having played Pokemon Legends: Arceus. While its mostly positivity, we do have a few issues beyond even the lackluster technical performance. Afterwards Joe runs through a few of his favorite game soundtracks from last year and the gang almost immediately gets distracted talking about Yakuza and Mark Hamill. Also, did you know there is a Tom Sawyer RPG developed by Square? Why yes, it does handle racial issues as poorly as you expected. Connectivity has joined Twitter, so be sure to follow @ConnectivityNWR to be up to date on any announcements. We are wanting more listener participation, so feel free to ask questions, they may show up in the show! Please send in some hard-hitting questions for the Connectivity gang to ponder over: the address is connectivity@nintendoworldreport.com
The is the second episode of our three-part TENIENTE series in the lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. After Daniel's quick success on day one, things started to get much tougher. We discuss deer sightings, hunting in thick brush, buying more coolers, and switching from hiking gaiters to thick snake gaiters. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for the next one!
This week we have the privilege of talking with Verna Volker - a Navajo ultra runner, mom of four and the founder of Native Women Running which is a community geared towards celebrating and bringing visibility to native runners by sharing their stories. This platform was born when Verna realized that she didn't see herself in the running world. “There's some type of image that's always portrayed in running…It's the mom who's a white mom, blonde, beautiful, thin, who just ran Boston and is back to her pre-pregnancy weight holding a baby.” Seeing primarily those posts on instagram and thinking “that is just not me” made Verna create a space on the internet where native women could find belonging, encouragement and sisterhood. Running is a way for Verna to heal. She's been on her own journey from generational trauma and loss to forgiveness. She runs because many people can't and she dedicates her races to lost family members or people on her mind. She also puts on virtual runs that are a call to action, bringing awareness to travesties like Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and the recent children who have been found on residential school properties. For too long native people have felt silenced - these runs are a way to use their voice and say, (in regards to missing women) ”These women are important to us. They're mothers and wives and sisters and aunties and they need to be found or they need to get justice.” We talk about the barriers native runners face, what some race directors are doing to diversify their start lines, the sponsorships NWR provides to support runners in their community, and how women can be proactive and protect themselves while running. Verna left us with reminders that each of us can use our unique gifts for activism and to be an ally. Do what you can wherever you are! Verna is a true joy and she shared so many important things with us, we are so grateful to have had this conversation!
