Clarke (Director and Exec Producer)& Maryum Ali (Muhammad's Daughter)- Blood Brothers, Malcolm X & Muhammad AliNetflix documentary takes a look at the relationship of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. The project appealed to Maryum because she was told and promised this project will be done properly and accurately. This documentary will give you a whole new perspective on Malcolm and Muhammad. Malcolm was really a mentor to Cassius Clay between '62-'65. This window in history is important to document. Exploring this relationship will be impactful for the viewers. The way this documentary is put together, the younger generation will learn the characteristics of Malcolm and Muhammad. Marcus talks about the challenges of trying to stay focus on the relationship of these two men and not stray too off path. So much ended up on the cutting room floor.
For three pivotal years, Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X forged a brotherhood that would not only change both men but change the world. Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali tells the extraordinary story behind the friendship —and the ultimate falling out— of two of the most iconic figures of the 20th century. Few people understand the bond these men shared. In this new feature-length documentary from producer Kenya Barris, director Marcus A. Clarke offers a fresh perspective by using insider voices and never-before-seen footage to chart this most complex of friendships, tracing the near simultaneous and symbiotic rise of the charismatic and outspoken Olympic champion who charmed the nation, and the ex-con-turned intellectual revolutionary who railed against oppression. Through interviews with those closest to them — Malcolm X's daughter Ilyasah Shabazz, Ali's brother Rahman and daughters Maryum and Hana — and cultural luminaries such as Cornel West and Al Sharpton, the film illuminates their meeting, bonding, and eventual falling out over discord within the leadership of the Nation of Islam. Director Marcus A. Clarke joins us for a conversation about the brief but transformative relationship that developed between these two giants of the late 20th century civil rights, and anti-war movements. Clarke also talks about the powerful forces that eventually broke their bond, to the lasting regret of Muhammad Ali. To watch: go to netflix.com/BloodBrothers
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a harmful practice that transcends religion, geography and class, and is carried out as a way to control women's sexuality. While studying at the University of Texas, Maryum Saifee heard about FGM for the first time — which soon unearthed a dark memory from her childhood. According to the UN, gender-based violence is the most pervasive yet least visible human rights violation in the world. It is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been subjected to the harmful practice of FGM. This episode examines why FGM and other forms of gender-based violence are prevalent in societies. As a survivor, Maryum shares how cultural and religious norms allow perpetrators to go unpunished. We explore solutions to protect survivors and put an end to gender-based violence. Featuring policy and advocacy insights from experts: Prof. Yakın Ertürk, former UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Natasha Latiff, Human Rights Lawyer at SAHR and Women for Justice Afghanistan. The Elders Special Segment Guest: Graça Machel, Freedom Fighter, International Advocate for Women's and Children's Rights, and Founding Member of The Elders. -- This episode is made possible with the support of Vodafone Americas Foundation. Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice decided to drop the appeal on a 2018 Detroit ruling that overturned the federal ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). For girls at risk of FGM, this federal ruling has put them in great jeopardy because it sent a signal to supporters of FGM that the practice is allowed, and the violence against girls, mostly around 7-8 years old in age continues. Therefore, it’s up to the states to outlaw the practice. What is female genital mutilation? Why is it practiced? How prevalent is it really? FGM is a human rights issue and is a form of gender-based violence and sexual violence against children. And it does not just happen in “other countries” or specific religions. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 513,000 women and girls have undergone or are at risk of FGM in the United States, including girls in families of both Christian and Muslim faiths. Survivors of this horrifying practice rarely come forward due to the taboo nature of the practice and the backlash survivors endure at the hands of their own family and community. The practice is not about religion but about upholding patriarchy and is misogynistic control over women and girls. On this episode, Ameé speaks with Maryum Saifee, a former U.S. Diplomat, FGM survivor and advocate who is speaking out against the practice of female genital mutilation. And in her words, FGM is simply child sexual assault with a sharp object and conversations need to be had to normalize talking about it so that the practice can be stopped.
