Greg Klyma is prolific songwriter and seasoned road performer known for his energetic live performances and clever storytelling lyrics that deliver entertaining rides through hilarity, reflection, passion and loss. Buffalo-born and based, Klyma is a scholar of rock 'n' roll and country music. From that foundation, he has developed a distinctive and compelling sound that resonates with audiences across the country — and even worldwide, with international indie artists having covered his songs. You may also have heard his original tunes on SiriusXM, the Midnight Special, and Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Guitar lessons at the age of 13 led to songwriting at age 18. In time, Greg taught himself to play harmonica, mandolin, piano, and tenor banjo. After nearly 30 years of touring and with more than a dozen studio albums under his belt, Klyma isn't slowing down. The Singles Project shows a songwriter who has matured and whose craft continues to evolve. Klyma change is real. Greg visited the Flamingo Lounge on September 29, 2025 and shared his stories and original composition, "Two Degrees in Buffalo", a well-known song by Greg, featured on his 2008 album Rust Belt Vagabond. There is a new pope in the Vatican and around the world Catholics and people of other faiths are wondering how Pope Leo the fourteenth may affect their lives. In the United States, there was surprise and celebration that a boy from the south side of Chicago, of rich but humble heritage, the son of school principal, would be selected to be the representative of Christ on earth. The amazement and hope extended to Mendocino County, where Pastor Matt Davis, leader of the Mendocino Presbyterian Church, took time from his duties on Friday to answer questions from curious students from Montessori Del Mar, and where Ed Burke, a parishioner at St. Anthony's in Mendocino reflected on his years at Mendel High School, where the new pope also studied.

One of the most hotly debated terms this century is the word woke. It means to be aware, as in, “I have woke up to [this cause].” Formerly, you were not aware; now, you are. Woke is most often used in the context of what some folks believe are the oppressors and the oppressed: “I am awake to your oppression.” Within this group of woke people, you will find a spectrum of adherents. On one end, there are the innocent idealists, and on the other, there are angry activists. Republicans or Democrats? Most people respond to these questions with emotion, best guesses, knee-jerk anger, but our guest Magic Wade responds with data. A professor in Illinois, Wade started the profound 1000 Cities Project on Substack to show that “gun violence isn't merely a ‘red state' or ‘blue city' problem. It's a widespread, worsening phenomenon affecting too many American communities. This isn't moral panic, it's rational outrage.” The old storylines about gun violence aren't working, but if we're going to confront one of the great social catastrophes of our time, we need more robust information, and Magic Wade (her real name!) has it.Also discussed:* Growing up in Alaska with homesteader parents* Sometimes Mom sleeps with a loaded gun beside the bed* Assault-rifle deaths are a drop in the bucket* Why some victims of gun violence elicit more sympathy than others* When journalists turn academic research into hot takes* “When conflict escalates past a certain point, the conflict itself takes charge. The original facts and forces that led to the dispute fade into the background. The us-versus-them dynamic takes over.”* How Salon went hyper-partisan …* Mike Schmidt, ouuut in Portland* A better de-carceration movement* That time Minneapolis wanted to abolish the police* Surveillance vs. safety* Requested: More men dancing!* Two Degrees of Nancy RommelmannPlus, tips from a homicide detective that Sarah once dated, the feel-good caper of the summer, and the masculine hotness of Gene Kell

Playwright Tira Palmquist sat in the Playwright's Spotlight while rehearsing her latest play The Body's Midnight. We had a wonderful conversation discussing the benefits of table work, entering the flow state and making discoveries later in the process, the role of the playwright in rehearsals, cutting characters, time between drafts, and the tool of "saving as." We also touch on the different development processes, rookie mistakes, teaching subtext and fixing your flaws, finding your voice, poetry in playwriting as well as her take on "pay to play" and finding opportunities. It was another interview full of insight that I hope can help take your playwriting to the next level. Enjoy!TIRA PALMQUIST is a dramaturg, director and playwright known for plays that merge the personal, the political and the poetic. Monopoly Watch, a public policy group established to examine New Zealand's supermarket industry, says the failure of the online grocery start-up Supie shows just how tightly locked the sector is. The independent Auckland-based supermarket launched in 2021 to try and bring more competition into the market. Monopoly Watch spokesperson and Two Degrees founder, Tex Edwards, says what's happened should send a clear signal to policy makers that the market needs further intervention. Edwards spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
In this week's episode, host Margaret Walls talks with Becky Epanchin-Niell, an associate professor at the University of Maryland and a senior fellow at Resources for the Future. Epanchin-Niell discusses how climate change and human land and water use have accelerated the frequency and extent of saltwater intrusion, which is saltwater contamination in freshwater rivers, soils, and aquifers. Epanchin-Niell and Walls also talk about the implications of saltwater intrusion for coastal ecosystems, drinking water, and the agricultural sector. Epanchin-Niell's recent research examines how saltwater intrusion affects agricultural practices on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. On this week's Out d'Coup LIVE we bring you a pre-recorded interview with Joslyn Diffenbaugh. Joslyn is a 10th grade student at Kutztown Area High School. She is the founder of the Teen Banned Books club and an outspoken student advocate against book bans in her school district and school districts all around the region. This past spring, the Kutztown Area School District school board canceled a grant-funded, "One School, One Book," program that planned to read Alan Gratz's new book, Two Degrees. The reason? Because a few outspoken conservative parents didn't want students reading about climate change! We had Alan Gratz on this program to talk about the controversy and Joslyn had an opportunity to interview him at the Firefly Bookstore during his visit to Kutztown University for last year's Children's Literature Conference. This interview was conducted on October 1, 2023 as a featured event during the PA Climate Convergence in Harrsiburg. Joslyn was supposed to interview Alan Gratz, but Alan unfortunately got COVID just a few days before the event. Karen Feridun from the PA Climate Convergence asked if I would be willing to step in and interview Joslyn. I was more than happy to step up. This is the second half of my conversation with Thomas Hischak whose new book is titled The Abbott Touch — Pal Joey, Damn Yankees and the Theatre of George Abbott. If you missed part one, you may want to catch up with the previous episode before listening to this one. George Abbott was a major force in the American Theater for more than 80 years. As an actor, director, playwright, and producer — and often several of those at the same time — he played a significant role in the creation of well over 100 Broadway plays and musicals including Jumbo, The Boys From Syracuse, On The Town, Where's Charlie, Call Me Madam, The Pajama Game, Once Upon A Mattress and Fiorello to name only a few. Thomas Hischak is the author of more than 30 books about Broadway, Hollywood and popular music including Musical Misfires — three decades of Broadway Musical heartbreak, The Mikado to Matilda — British Musicals on the New York Stage, and the Tin Pan Alley Encyclopedia. At the end of our previous episode Thomas Hischak and I were just beginning a discussion of the remarkable list of Broadway greatest writers, directors and choreographers who were all in essence trained and mentored by Mr. Abbott including Rodgers & Hart, Comden, Green & Bernstein, Adler & Ross, Bock & Harnick, Kander & Ebb, Jerome Robbins and most especially, Harold Prince. We also explore his reputation as a "show doctor." We will never now how many shows he advised and "fixed" on their way to Broadway. Become A PATRON of Broadway Nation! In this episode I spoke with Paul Seidler (@brachlandberlin), a member of the Terra0 artist collective. Terra0 has been around since 2016 when it released a whitepaper outlining how a technologically enhanced forest combine with blockchain could own itself and exert autonomy. Since then the collective has organized several exhibitions exploring this theme including Flowertokens, an experiment with tokenization and verification of natural commodities, and an early attempt at creating a combined crypto-collectible physical asset in 2018. During the interview we talk about how Paul's thinking has evolved with Terra0's experience with various art installations, dystopian sci-fi, and Regenerative Finance. This week we chat with Kelsey Madges, an Ohio middle school librarian and book lover. We talk about the highs and the lows of working in school libraries. If you're like us, it's been almost 40 years since you were a middle schooler and lots has changed for kids and the librarians who help them, such as the use of Chromebooks in classes and the current prevalence of book bans. But Kelsey is a book lover and supporter through and through. In fact she admits that she enjoys almost everything she reads. In this episode, we also cover how we feel about book quotes, why letter writing is still important, and what Carrie should have tattooed on her body. This week I welcome Alan Gratz to the show. We'll be talking about his latest #1 New York Times bestselling young adult novel, Two Degrees and the controversy over the Kutztown Area School District's canceling their "One Book, Once School" middle school program that was set to read Two Degrees. Why did they cancel reading his book? It's a familiar story of right-wing extremism infecting our schools. Right-wing members on the school board and in the community objected to reading a book that accepted the reality and the threats posed by climate change. On April 15th, Gratz will be one of the Featured Speakers at the 25th Annual Kutztown University Children's Literature Conference. In the wake of the decision by the Kutztown Area School District to cancel their "One School, One Book" program, he made extra time to meet with the community while in town. He will be doing two events at Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown on April 15th as well. At the evening event, he will be interviewed by Joslyn Diffenbaugh, founder of the local Teen Banned Book Club. Details for the events can be found on Firefly Bookstore's Facebook page and through the links in the show notes. Alan Gratz is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of nineteen novels and graphic novels for young readers, including Two Degrees, Captain America: The Ghost Army, Ground Zero, Refugee, Allies, Prisoner B-3087, and Ban This Book. A Knoxville, Tennessee native, Alan is now a full-time writer living in Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and daughter. Learn more about him online at www.alangratz.com. Welcome to this week's Out d'Coup LIVE. This week I welcome Robyn Underwood to the show. Robyn leads KOFEE - Kutztown Organized for Educational Excellence which formed to push back against rising extremism on the Kutztown Area School District. The KASD middle school was planning on reading Alan Gratz's book, Two Degrees as part of their "One Book, One School" program. Two Degrees centers around the lives of four middle-school students struggling to survive disasters brought on by climate change. Right-wing members of the school board and the community didn't want students to read about climate change, so the superintendent canceled the program. We'll talk about the impact of extremism on Kutztown's middle-school and the work of KOFEE to take back their schools. Robyn Undersood has a BSc and PhD in entomology (study of insects) and specialize in honey bee research. She is the Mom of two kids who have been in the district their whole lives and are now in the high school. Robyn hesitantly began acting as an activist when she saw things she did not like happening at school board meetings. Now she leads KOFEE (Kutztown Organized for Educational Excellence). Tolaga Bay is one of the most isolated places on the East Coast following the storm. Limited information has come from the coastal community since Monday, but cellphone reception has now been restored for Two Degrees users. HMNZS Manawanui dropped off supplies at some centres along the coast above Gisborne last night - but couldn't make a drop at Tolaga Bay as planned. Deputy principal of Tolaga Bay Area School Shanan Gray spoke to Kim Hill.
There is growing concern about sections of Hawke's Bay and Tairāwhiti with communications almost completely wiped out by the storm. Wairoa in particular is a black hole, with cellphones, landlines and internet all down, and the lone satellite phone had run out of battery. Late last night the Wairoa District Council sent an email to media advising a Star Link internet terminal had been activated, allowing them to send limited information to authorities outside the town. Telecommunications Forum, which represents phone networks Spark, Two Degrees and Vodafone, as well as internet providers like Chorus, was trying to provide satellite internet links to the region yesterday. Corin Dann spoke to Forum's chief executive Paul Brislen.
The cyclone is causing major telecommunications outages. Gisborne in particular is completely isolated this morning with internet and mobile phone lines out. Paul Brislen is head of the Telecommunications Forum - which represents all three of the phone networks - Spark, Two Degrees and Vodafone.
In this episode we look at climate stories that reveal the impacts of climate solutions. This is a harder story to tell because many of the best solutions are still on the table. In fact, you are working hard to get lawmakers and community leaders to take these solutions seriously and put them into practice. In 25 or 50 years we will be able to tell many stories about the beneficial impacts these solutions will have. But we need to tell these stories today. There are three different types of Climate Solution Impact stories you can tell. The Current Solution Success Story The Future Solution Success Story The Solution Motivation Story For examples of Current Climate Change Solution Success Stories, we hear from Dr. Anthony Leiserowitz and Yale Climate Connections. A new solar-powered car designed to travel up to 40 miles on sunshine alone: That's enough to cover many people's daily commutes. Eight states, 30 cities team up to reduce flooding threat along the Mississippi: They've partnered with Ducks Unlimited to restore more than 60 wetlands that will hold floodwaters during storms. To hear and read more of these stories visit Yale Climate Connections. The Future Climate Change Solution Success Story This type of story relies on our efforts to envision and imagine the world filled with the solutions we advocate. We want to paint a picture of a future worth pursuing. When we succeed, we create a yearning in others for this better world. For examples of these, head over to the Clifi Imaginarium. Allison Whitaker tells us about the ways they take seemingly dry information about solutions, and turn them into compelling stories. Check out With Many Roots to read these Cli-fi solution stories and to learn about the free monthly Introduction to Climate Fiction on-line workshops. The Climate Change Solution Motivation Story This story reveals why I am motivated to do the climate work I am doing. The story itself may not seem to have anything to do with climate change. Still this story goes right to the heart of my work. I will tell you one of my climate solution motivation stories. Citizens Climate Radio host, Peterson Toscano, shares one of his motivation stories, and shows us how to then pivot to climate change solutions and specific meaningful action. What you will learn in this episode We can tell effective climate stories. There are two types of climate change stories. The climate change impact story--A story that reveals the dangers climate-changed induced extreme weather and other impacts have on our lives and the world. The second are the climate solution stories. We covered three different climate solutions stories. The Current Climate Change Solution Success Story. This might be a story about a breakthrough in technology, a new important person or group who is on board in pursuing climate change solutions, or it can be about a solution that has been put into action. The Future Climate Change Success Story. This one requires your imagination to envision what the future will look like with solutions in place. This is a form of clifi, or climate fiction. And finally the Climate Change Solution Motivation Story. This story reveals why you are so passionate about a particular climate change solution. Once you tell a compelling story about your motivation, the future, or climate impact, you can then do the Climate Change Pivot. Connect your story to the solution you are pursuing. But don't leave them with just a pivot. Provide your listener with a specific, meaningful, and achievable next step. It might be as simple as asking, “Do you want to get together over coffee sometime next week to talk more about this?” Do you want to learn more about climate storytelling and get some experience in a group? Join Peterson for a free on-line storytelling workshop January 17th 2023 8:00 PM Eastern. He will share activities and insights, and he will give feedback to participants about their stories. You will walk away with fresh inspiration in telling your compelling climate stories. It will be fun and informative. Click here to register for the training. You can't get this kind of awesomeness without a warrant (or a prescription). This Garage Hour does geek right, with a firearm-friendly amendment in Iowa, big AM-talk in San Diego (board-ops, fer shur), the risk science poses to senseless sinners, why New Yorkers are scared shedless of chintzy scooters from pinko China (apartment flambé, anyone?), and why Kevin Bacon can't hold a candle to our "Two Degrees from a Cutlass" theory. There's also some reminiscence about a client with a private dirt-oval, and an exposé of what happens to your skillset when the electro-nannies start doing your legwork. But wait! the Gearhead Consultancy also explains the "Drowning Man" theory, and we take a look at how the thugly F.B.I. is taking a rope to the progenitor of Dreamland Resort (.com) and his affection for Area 51. There's also Machines of Loving Grace, Goatsnake, St. Vitus, Five Horse Johnson, Primus and Air.

We're gonna set it straight, this neonate film series of all new Trek adventure with our ill communication about Star Trek 2009!New York Times bestselling author Alan Gratz returns to the show this week to talk about the film series that turned Trek into a blockbuster and introduced a whole new generation to the adventures of Kirk and crew. When Romulus is destroyed at the end of the 24th century, the vengeful Nero is thrown into an alternate 23rd century, where his rampage takes the life of George Kirk. Now, George's son Jim will have to overcome his personal flaws and realize his destiny to take command of the USS Enterprise to save Earth and the Federation! As the TNG series of films wound down at the box office, Paramount returned to a question that had plagued the studio for over 20 years: "How could you ever recast Captain Kirk?" To finally answer that question, they turned to genre tv and film wunderkind JJ Abrams to give the familiar characters and world of Star Trek a makeover for the new millennium. The result was a zippy and stylish film that eschewed almost 50 years of continuity to instead boil the characters of Kirk, Spock, et al. to their essential qualities. The result was a reinvigoration of the Trek film franchise and a welcoming of the often niche property into the fraternity of cinematic popcorn blockbusters. In the first half of our conversation about Star Trek 2009, we talk about the process behind reimagining the franchise for a new audience, interfacing with nostalgia, the "Wars-ening" of Star Trek, the previous attempts to reboot the franchise, Abrams as a director, the film's exemplary casting, and the importance of a memorable score. We also discuss built-in doomscrolling, Medea Goes to Qo'nos, spacing in comfort, avoiding "the chompers", rotoscoping Spock, wife vs. Spielberg, the Raimi Trek that never was, mining torpedoes, missing Remans, replicator questions, the lonely French horn in space, a different kind of cantina scene, the Shatnerverse, Kirk's "Maverick moment", and 721 lens flares!Reverse the curse!Follow Alan on Twitter and get his new book "Two Degrees"!http://www.twitter.com/alangratzhttps://www.alangratz.com/writing/two-degrees/Learn the story behind your favorite Trek episodes with BackTrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingSay HELLO to us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/WVvCHVWqzfBuy us a Slusho on Patreon and Ko-Fi!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodhttps://ko-fi.com/E1E01M2UASubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2
