We reconnect with Matt, who last was on the podcast in February 2021 (episode 43). Matt brings us up to speed on his developing creation – building an ecosystem of football (soccer) clubs from Europe and the USA, under his new subsidiary Club Underdog. Matt is now an owner of European football clubs Campobasso FC and Dagenham & Redbridge and last year acquired Brooklyn FC, the first professional expansion soccer franchise in the history of Brooklyn. We explore his pivot from the business he founded and grew many years ago. We talk the drive of passion, the allure of the unpredictable, the magic of under-dogging, treating “no” as a driver, self-belief and the most valuable currency you can collect. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
NEW: send me a text message! (I'd love to hear your thoughts - texts get to me anonymously, without charge or signup) I've said something like this before: I believe the means of global soccer production should be controlled by fans, players and the community the club is in, collectively or cooperatively, and not by firms and companies based half a world away from the clubs in question. So, this podcast is not a natural avenue for an American multi-club owner of European clubs to share his story. In an exception to that pattern, here is a conversation with Matt Rizzetta, an owner of - precisely - a company (named North Sixth Group, in New York) that controls clubs half a world away. Most of our conversation looks behind the scenes of his involvement in Campobasso FC, in Italy's 3rd league, from questions over how investors find clubs in the first place to whether he could rename the club. While I believe I went in with a level of empathy, I also asked perhaps the most critical questions I've asked a guest yet, and what resulted was an interesting and respectful conversation. And: you can WIN a copy of David Kilpatrick's lovely short book 95 Theses on the reformation of Football. I'll tell you how a few minutes into the episode. To give to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. As a charity, tax receipts are issued to donors Welcome back to Behind Greatness. Today we are speaking with Dimitry from his office in Estonia. In this conversation we are treated to a battle-ridden, caterpillar to butterfly story. Dimitry brings us through his ideas formed through his experience living under a Communist regime to a zealous video gaming obsession to selling books door-to-door to building a truly international bespoke fashion house. Along the way, we learn about the power of “being delusional”, the skills learned to diffuse a bomb and how to make yourself allergic to shrimp. We discuss growing up in a system where lying is the tool of ruling , the predictability of seduction, being more interesting, the right dose of desperation, creativity of the entrepreneurial mind and the power of being at chaos' edge. Warning: hard lessons to be learned here. Have a listen to a bad-ass who lived under incarceration in a communist regime: Luis Zuniga (ep 115). Matt grew up in New York in a close-knit family who encouraged him to both dream big and to keep his eye on the pragmatic. We discuss his proactive search for his passion as a young man as he bobbed and weaved through a brief but explosive stint as an aspiring boxer, an early marketing career working in Times Square and with a side-hustle as a sports agent. When the dust settled, he sat down with his pregnant wife and got her blessing to start a PR firm from scratch. Eleven years later he sits with us to share some of the lessons he’s been learning. Still under 40, he is a successful entrepreneur, agency founder and soccer club owner. He continues to commit to his new adventures with the hunger of a creator both humbled and fueled by his anxieties, uncertainties and fears. Matt pays deep tribute to his hardworking immigrant family, with particular attention to all the matriarchs in his life – including the bright light that was his sister. Pragmatism has its place in Matt’s world – but dreaming big is where he plays. Cannabis' ascension to the mainstream has required brands to adjust their go-to-market strategies with an emphasis on digestible messaging, keeping the broader consumer in mind. Back in the early days, the media consumer who was interested in cannabis content tended to be younger, niche-oriented, and primarily male. In time this has changed dramatically. Today's media consumer in cannabis is omnipresent. Today's consumer is female just as much as it is male, it is a baby boomer just as much as it is a millennial, and it is a high earner just as much as it is a middle-class income household.
