Returning guest, author Amie Kaufman heads back to the Chalk with Liz and Ben to face the rough music in a bumper-size discussion of the penultimate Tiffany Aching book, 2010's I Shall Wear Midnight. Tiffany Aching, nearly sixteen, is no longer an apprentice. Now two years under the witch's hat, she cares for those as can't care for themselves, and deals with the harsh realities of rural life. But all is not well in the Chalk: the unending need for its only witch is pushing Tiffany to the edge, and an act of violence - and its consequences - test her limits. Roland, the Baron's son, is engaged - but not to Tiffany. While he's away, the old Baron dies, and Tiffany must fetch him home to take his place. And on top of all that, something is stirring: something old and evil that stirs up old prejudices and fears about witches - and is aiming them directly at Tiffany Aching... Content note: this episode contains discussion of (fictional) intimate partner and family violence, miscarriage and suicide. If you or anyone you know needs help, use the Wikipedia list of crisis lines to find one local to you. Nearly three years after she danced the Dark Morris and kissed the Wintersmith, we rejoin Tiffany Aching, who is discovering that even fixing her mistakes can have consequences. But is this really a book for younger readers - or even young adults - when it includes some of the heaviest stuff of any Discworld novel? Does it all hang together, or are there a few ideas fighting each other in this plot? Who knew what and when about the Cunning Man, and is he Pratchett's creepiest villain yet? What spill words do you not say when you're listening to the show? Join in the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat66 on social media! Returning guest Amie Kaufman is the author of (so far) twenty novels for middle grade and young adult audiences, including the Illuminae Files and Aurora Cycle sci-fi trilogies with Jay Kristoff; the Elementals, Starbound and Unearthed series with Meagan Spooner, and the World Between Blinks books with Ryan Graudin. For Pratchett fans she recommends her upcoming YA fantasy novel Isles of the Gods, launching in May 2023. As mentioned in the episode, Amie also produces two podcasts about writing: Amie Kaufman on Writing, a 10-minute masterclass on writing techniques, and Pub Dates, in which she and co-writer Meagan Spooner take you behind the scenes on writing and publishing a novel, and what comes after. For more of Amie's exploits visit amiekaufman.com or sign up for her Substack newsletter Finding North. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Catch Liz in person when she's one of the speakers for the Sci-Fight science comedy debate “Should we fear AI?” on Thursday, 13 April 2023 at Howler in Melbourne! It's hosted by previous guest Alanta Colley and features a great line-up of comedians, writers and scientists. Get all the details and book tickets vis moshtix. Next month, now that we've met all the characters who'll appear in it, we'll be playing and discussing the 2013 board game The Witches: A Discworld Game, designed by Martin Wallace! Send us your questions using the hashtag #Pratchat67, and if you're a subscriber, watch out for an unboxing video via our Ko-Fi page soon. And while our plans for #Pratchat68 in June aren't quite fixed yet, here's an earlier than usual heads up that in July we'll be discussing the fourth Long Earth novel, The Long Utopia, with returning guest Deanne Sheldon-Collins. Those books are long, so you might want to get started now! Send in your questions for that one using the hashtag #Pratchat69 - or drop us an email at chat@pratchatpodcast.com.

Hunted by Meagan SpoonerBeauty, as she used to be called when she was little, knows she doesn't like life in town, even if her two sisters do. She struggles with the expectations of what life might and probably will be like for her. Basically, finding someone to marry, setting up a house and then having children. But, does she really want that? Or should she just accept that is what happens when you get older and grow up. Like how she used to be called Beauty, but now goes by Yeva, since that is a more proper name. Yeva still longs for those old days with her father when she would go hunting with him in the woods. But since her father became a respectable merchant and moved the family to the city, those days seems like such a distant memory for both of them. When her father unexpectedly loses everything however, it appears the only avenue left to them is to return to the old hunting lodge and for her father to turn back to hunting. But he is much older now, and seems plagued by a mystery creature, or creatures that lurk in the woods. Yeva is concerned about her father, and when his dog comes back without him one night, she knows it is up to her to save him, or die trying. What she never expects is to find the creature that her father has been ranting about. And just what she will do to try to escape from him, once the creature has caught her.Hunted by Meagan Spooner is a great retelling of the old fairytale Beauty and the Beast. This one has some different angles to it from some of the other stories out there and it adds to it. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys reading retellings of classic tales with new spins on them.Recommended for grades 7 and up.

I love animal companions! A couple of my favourites are Mogget the cat from Garth Nix’s Abhorsen trilogy, Doe-Eyes the dog from Meagan Spooner’s Hunted, and Maruman the cat from Isobelle Carmody’s Obernewtyn series, but my list is very long. One thing I know for sure is that you can’t just put an animal in your story, mention it’s there and declare your work done. An animal companion is woven right into the story’s fabric—they have a part to play and a purpose to serve. Done right, they enrich your work, so here are three tips for making the most of your animal companions. I also give you my monthly book recommendation: this time it's The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang. Meagan is the author of "Hunted" and the "Skylark" trilogy, and Amie is the co-author of "The Illuminae Files". Amie and Meagan are longtime friends and they’ve traveled quite a lot together and have even lived with each other. They’re the epitome of friendship goals. In today’s episode, we discuss how traveling has directly impacted their writings both individually and together as they co-authored their newest book "Unearthed". In our conversation, we dive into all the details of “Unearthed”, how the idea came to fruition from their travels, and what it was like writing the book together. “Unearthed” is the first in a duology and the film rights have been optioned by the production company “Cross Creek Pictures”, the same company that produced “Black Swan”, and has Doug Liman from “The Bourne Identity” attached to direct. For our listeners who are especially interested in co-authoring, you’ll want to pay special attention to Meagan and Amie when they walk us through why mutual respect is the key foundation to their successful and healthy partnership as co-authors, how they stay aligned with their book’s main goal by assigning primary responsibilities, and how to productively and efficiently work through disagreements as co-authors. They also share really helpful advice on finding writing partners for yourself and what to look out for. We also talk about how Meagan landed a literary agent and how Amie became represented by the same literary agency. We deep dive into some real talk about finding your fit when it comes to literary representation, and what to be aware of when you’re figuring out which literary agent to work with. This episode is sponsored by Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner and Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet. Enter our Top 20 of 2017 giveaway here! bookriot.com/bookriottop20 Questions 1. Hey Amanda and Jenn! I'm looking for a good book for my boyfriend. He's never really enjoyed reading but is trying to change that, particularly because his sister and I just gush over books every time we're around each other and I think he wants in on the fun. He's mentioned that he might be interested in something like Stephen King, but the size of the books are too intimidating. I think he would particularly enjoy mysteries or thrillers, but any genre is welcome. The most important thing is that the books are not too long and they are easy to get through -- so no complicated structures or long lists of characters. Thanks for all you do, --Morgan   2. Hey Get Booked, After reading Bad Feminist for my book club and LOVING it, I've been craving more feministy reading. I've read We Should All Be Feminists and Men Explain Things to Me. I'm currently listening to Missoula by Jon Krakauer and it's completely fascinating. Could you recommend a few of your favorite feminist books? Even novels with strong feminist themes or characters would be good. Thanks!! --Anna   3. Hello! I’m looking for a graphic novel/ comic recommendation. I love the format, but find that I’m quite picky. Based on what I’ve read and liked, it seems that I prefer comics geared towards a younger audience. I’m not opposed to more adult/ mature content, but I’m not super into gratuitous violence/ nudity, etc. I LOVED Nimona, Lumberjanes, Lucky Penny, Henchgirl, all of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s work, and Paper Girls, so if there’s anything that you can recommend similar to those, I’d love to hear about it! Thanks so much! --Ashley   4. Hello! I recently just discovered your podcast and I can't get enough of it! I have a 7 year old son who is in second grade and loves to read. He reads above his grade level and I am looking for book recommendations for him but also that are appropriate for his age. He is very much interested in Legos and Minecraft. I'm wondering if there are any good, but appropriate children's mysteries out there for him. He has recently discovered the Goosebumps series in his Grandpa's basement from when my husband was a kid and has started on those. Thank you for your help! --Christina   5. Hi, I'm constantly trying to expand my genre tastes, and I think it's time to try some romance. There's just one problem: I'm polyamourous and I don't know where to look for poly romance really. I have very low tolerance for competition between potential partners as a plot forwarding device and have trouble empathizing with characters in monogamous relationships angsting about cheating and wandering potential. I've read Ascension and liked the concept but found the writing quality wanting. I'm open to any sub genre of romance, as long as at least some of the primary characters are polyamourous. --Amanda   6. Hello, I am an avid reader but tend to stick to mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and classics. I love classic mystery/detective books like Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, G.K Chesterton's Father Brown and Dorothy Sayers but I am struggling to find contemporary mystery/detective fiction that aren't cookie cutter stories. I'm don't like a lot of gore or sex and I really enjoy the process of discovering who committed the crime. Any books/series recommendations along these lines would be great! --Heather   7. I've been doing a lot of very heavy, very dry reading for my degree, and I need some fun books to read in the meantime. Since everything I've been reading lately has been nonfiction, I thought I would get as far away from that as possible and read some fantasy. But because I'm so busy with school I don't have as much time to read as I wish I did, so I'm hesitant to start a series. I thought some YA could do the trick since the reading is always a bit easier, and I feel like everyday I hear about a new YA fantasy novel that is coming out. I recently read Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and thought it was spectacular, and I also read The Magicians and thought it was great. My favorite author is Neal Stephenson, but I don't have the ability to read such complicated and heavy subject matter at the moment. --Max   Books Discussed Squire by Tamora Pierce (Protector of the Small series) Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones Bonfire by Krysten Ritter (trigger warning: sexual assault) The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith The Geek Feminist Revolution by Kameron Hurley We’re Going To Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union (trigger warning: discussion of her rape) Misfit City Vol 1 by Kirsten Smith, art by Kurt Lustgarten, Naomi Franquiz Jem and the Holograms V1 by Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell The Key Hunters series by Eric Luper (#1 The Mysterious Moonstone) The Brixton Brothers series (The Case of the Case of Mistaken Identity), recommended by Preeti Glutton for Pleasure by Alisha Rai Poly Romance post Bound To Be A Groom by Megan Mulry IQ by Joe Ide Aunty Lee’s Delights by Ovidia Yu A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Schwab Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
