Casey Brozek, PGA Director of Golf at Medinah Country Club, joined the Club + Resort Talks podcast to discuss the renovation of Medinah's #3 course, completed in July 2024. The project, led by OCM Design, included significant changes like repositioning holes 17 and 18, adding 50 acres of fescue grass, and removing trees to improve turf conditions. The course now offers more playable options for members and hosts the 2026 President's Cup. Challenges included educating members about the changes and maintaining the course's natural features. The renovation also included 40 miles of drainage and Better Billy Bunkers, enhancing playability and maintenance efficiency. Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief of Club + Resort Business, also covered current news from across the industry, including Forest Dunes announcing a new private golf club. The award-winning golf facility in Roscommon, Mich., is poised to add a fourth course—SkyFall, a new private club designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner that will also allow limited resort guest play. Henderson Park has completed the acquisition of PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., from a Brookfield Asset Management private real estate fund. The 807-acre property was purchased in a joint venture partnership with Salamander and South Street Partners. Lastly, Taylor Morrison's new resort lifestyle community, Esplanade at St. Marys on the Georgia coast, will include an 18-hole championship golf course from C.W. Golf Architecture, a wellness center featuring a full-service salon and spa, a resort pool and spa, a state-of-the-art fitness center, tennis/pickleball/bocce sports courts, a culinary center featuring multiple food and beverage outlets, and more.

Eva Rogers was named by Golf Digest as one of the Best Young Teachers in America. She is also a certified US Kids Instructor. She teaches at one of the most historic courses in the country, Medinah Country Club just outside of Chicago. Medinah has hosted several majors including 3 US Opens, 2 PGA Championships, a US Senior Open, and the 2012 Ryder Cup. She is a bright star in our game, doing great things. Eva shares what it's like to call Medinah home and the great membership they have there. She was recently selected to serve on the 2024/2025 PGA Lead Team and we hear what they are working on. They cover a variety of topics, including the best Ben Hogan story Mike heard while renovating Shady Oaks Country Club in Texas, how to design and build site-specific bunkers, the differences between Sandbelt golf and American golf, and some off-the-wall design concepts he'd like to try . Mike and Andy also dig deeply into two of OCM's current projects: an ambitious renovation of Course 3 at Medinah Country Club, which will debut at the 2026 Presidents Cup; and a 36-hole new build in Georgia, which will feature both a heathland-style and a Sandbelt-style course.

Steve Cook has had a career laced with high profile tournaments, including two U.S. Amateurs, a Ryder Cup, and a PGA Championship while at Oakland Hills, and a BMW Championship in 2019 at Medinah Country Club. Yet to him, a career should be more about contribution than achievement. He has mentored and graduated many assistants onto their own successful superintendent careers, and takes great pride and satisfaction in the ongoing relationships with them. His primary criterion for hiring an assistant is character. "I owe it to the rest of the team to not bring in someone who isn't a good fit," Cook said. "I look for good people. The other stuff they can learn." Cook has a knack for boiling the seemingly complex down to the simple, whether it's writing a blog or orchestrating a management plan. "What we do as superintendents really isn't that complicated," he said. "I think we tend to overcomplicate it at times." Why are there so many open positions for assistants? "Because of the self-inflicted damage we've done to ourselves as an industry over the past two or three decades," according to Cook. This is a fascinating conversation with one who gets it. Gets the job and life away from it. Who else do you know who had climbed a 22,000 ft mountain in Nepal? Listen and learn.

“In any industry, especially in our industry one needs to have an entrepreneurial mindset. But the challenge is this: in most clubs it’s not that my fellow club managers lack imagination or innovation. They are pretty bright folks. It’s through no fault of their own but the challenge is that we work in an environment where we change boards frequently, presidents every couple of years and the fear of failure in most clubs is so high that it prevents the management team from experimenting and innovating because the tolerance for failure is very small. Fortunately for us at Medinah we have educated and have the support of the board so that I have a pretty large safely net. So for as many ideas that have succeeded we have an equal amount that have failed. But you know what, it’s okay. We want our employees and our team to think outside the box because just like I have a safety net, I want to provide them with a safety net as well.” Host Colin Weston speaks with Medinah Country Club GM/COO Robert Sereci to learn how he took an innovator's mindset to transform the iconic golf venue to become a vibrant, welcoming, experience-based community. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/1/1ea879c1-a4a2-4e10-bea4-e5d8368a3c7a/XE3WH9Fy.jpg Hired at Medinah in 2015, Robert is a strong collaborator and team builder, and has worked to strengthen and empower the Medinah brand. In 2016, Robert worked with his board, management, and membership to roll out “Medinah 2020,” a comprehensive $25 million phased club improvement plan. All of these investments will move Medinah Country Club into a more modern era of membership enhancements and strengthens its community. “A lot of people tell me that I have the “dream job.” My response to them is that you chose what you want to do in life…and I chose to do this.”   Evan Schiller (https://golfyeah.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Evan_Headshot.jpg) Evan Schiller Photography Weston, Connecticut If there is such a thing as an “accidental career,” or a career path that’s discovered, rather than initially pursued…then that may describe the story you’re about to hear from Evan Schiller – who over the last twenty years has established himself as one of the premier golf course photographers in the world. Evan started out with a love for the game of golf, and during the first part of his career, as a PGA Golf Professional, he gained a first-hand understanding of every aspect of the game…as a club professional and in tournament play. And during that period, he discovered two things that shaped the future direction of his life. First, Evan discovered that he possessed an artist’s eye for nature’s beauty…and more specifically, he saw the beauty of  the golf courses he was playing on. Secondly, Evan discovered that he could make a living by capturing with a camera the beauty that he witnessed. So with no formal training, a simple Minolta camera, and a whole lot of courage, Evan followed his passion to begin what has become a highly successful business and rewarding career. Shooting from the ground, lifts, helicopters, and now drones, Evan brings a fresh perspective to each project he undertakes. He thoughtfully scouts out each golf course he photographs with the goal of capturing its unique features and nuances under optimal lighting conditions possible, which can mean being in the right spot at the right time, waiting for the sun to rise, or the sun to set…and hoping that something unexpected won’t spoil the shot. Evan has photographed hundreds of championship courses in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa and Japan. He has captured and left his own distinctive mark on some of the most recognized tracks around the world including Pebble Beach Golf Links, Augusta National Golf Club, Medinah Country Club, The Old Course at St. Andrews, Royal County Down and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Evan’s work is published in numerous national and international magazines, books and calendars, including The Masters Journal, The US Open Magazine, The Ryder Cup Journal, LINKS Magazine, Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golf Course Architecture. Evan’s photography is exclusively featured in his two highly acclaimed books, Golf Courses of Hawaii and Golf’s Unfolding Drama. In addition, Evan continues to publish his own award-winning Golfshots calendar (https://www.golfshots.com/store.html) . Show Highlights:  The role Evan’s father played in his taking up the game, and in becoming a pro golfer What was the catalyst that sparked his interest in becoming a professional photographer The key factors that influenced Evan’s decision to change his career path How Evan balances his different roles as an artist and a business owner The competitive landscape for golf course photography The growing importance of video and drones in golf course photography How and why weather is such a big factor in the profitability of an assignment Why Evan thinks that the word “retire” is weird Guidance for parents on how they should (and should not) guide their kid’s career choice Evan’s theory on why games like golf were created…and what’s gone wrong with games Notable Quotes:  On his career change from PGA Professional: “I got a lot of criticism, but I chose to do it because I really liked it. I thought, “What’s the worst thing that can happen? If it doesn’t work out, I can do something else.” You can always find a way.” On his source of personal...

As young professionals working in the golf business, often times our focus is on developing the set of what I call “vocational skills” that are specific to our industry...the teaching, playing, merchandising and event administration skills, among many others that our jobs require from us.But as our careers continue to evolve, success or failure can hinge on a new and different skill set. Often referred to as soft skills, they should more properly be referred to as success skills. These success skills include the ability to build and sustain relationships, developing emotional intelligence or EQ, learning how to lead and why that matters, becoming a mentor to your team, and many others. I feel these are so important, it’s what motivated me to develop golfprofessionalgrowth.com to dig deeper into how to develop these skills. Our guest in this episode has summarized these skills so well, I had to have him on to discuss this further. Robert Sereci is the GM/COO at the renowned Medinah Country Club. You know Medinah from it’s storied history in major championship and Ryder Cup golf, but ironically Robert came to Medinah with little to no knowledge of that history. And he’s used that to his advantage. You’ll hear how being a “non-golf” guy has allowed him to view Medinah through a different lens that allows him to lead and strategize without any bias. Robert is known as an intelligent businessman, a calculated risk taker and a mentor to many in our business. The result for Medinah has been a thriving club atmosphere which is now a leader and innovator in the industry. In part one, Robert walks us through the first five of his “Top 10 Lessons They Didn’t Teach you in School”. These lessons are universally applicable to golf professionals and general managers alike...and even if you’re not in a leadership or management position yet, you’ll want to take notes and know where you can begin to develop the critical success skills that will help you down the road.Robert's Top 10 Lessons:The difference between passion and purpose. You don’t know what you don’t knowUnderstand that your success is determined by others. How to manage and lead in a world of greyUnderstand how your club keeps scoreUnderstand that your success is determined by othersYour technical skills will become less important as you climb the ladderStop Coaching and start mentoringYour club governance model is more important then you realizeIt’s not about you.
