Trust is a tricky thing. For some it can be trusting in our abilities, for others it's spiritual surrender. Trust is something that I've personally had a tough relationship with - I struggle to trust others and my environment. Through a ton of therapy work I've come to trust myself but that took time. In this episode, returning guest Melissa Ryan will talk with us about trust, imposter syndrome, and getting too attached to a vision.

Podcast Description "I mean that's the ultimate dream right? Like, I think if you think back to 2011-2012 when you saw these uprisings around the world that were live streamed you saw Occupy protests and it was: "Oh, the Internet is great!...it's gonna democratize communication" and I think to a certain extent it has and certainly voices have emerged that wouldn't have otherwise. We are also seeing you know the ill-affect of that. Ya know, and that Holocaust deniers have a voice and conspiracy theorists have a voice and white nationalists have a voice, so finding the right balance of that I think is going to be the battle of a generation" Melissa Ryan helps people, policymakers, and institutions combat online toxicity and extremism. (AKA trolls, the so-called alt-right, disinformation, and fake news.) She write Ctrl Alt-Right Delete, a weekly newsletter, that reaches more than 16,000 readers. She's also written commentary for outlets like Buzzfeed News, Refinery29, and NowThis. Previously, she was a digital strategist for Democratic campaigns and progressive causes. She worked with influencers and online communities to raise money, mobilize activists, drive online conversations and shape media narratives. Her familiarity with this space gives her a unique insight into how trolls and extremists organize. Asureti co-founder and Practice Director, Melissa Ryan, has been fascinated with language for as long as she can remember — and she has the spelling bee record to prove it. Since she’s worked with people across business operations, the multi-faceted data protection expert has seen firsthand how a common language can bridge gaps between departments, allowing for truly valuable and meaningful conversations. That technical jargon flying across your teams? It actually pulls your organization further apart. Melissa uses a risk rating matrix, for example, to better facilitate communications with clients. These tools — or points of reference like taxonomies — contribute immeasurable value when they are defined through a shared language and then used across the business. “We find that leaders who are leveraging these common definitions, these standard rating, and translation tools, and incorporating them into a GRC technology are truly finding enhanced value,” explains Melissa. Here’s the key: Make sure the underlying structure, calculations, and design of the common language of your tools and technology are consistent. Ready to learn how to connect the dots between the teams in your risk organization?

Melissa Ryan speaks with Mutale Nkonde in a vital conversation about technology, representation and policy. The conversation covers a range of topics within Mutale’s research: Artificial Intelligence, politically motivated audio visual forgeries and deepfakes as well as the unevenly distributed effects of automation. In a cutting indictment of the tech industry’s ability to both repeat and amplify societal inequalities Mutale observes that Facebook has 146 staff working on Artificial Intelligence research, and not a single one of them is black. What this implies for a future shaped by technology, in the image of its creator, is a terrifying prospect.Mutale is a policy analyst and fellow at Data and Society, and an advisor to Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.Listen to Ctrl Alt-Right Delete episodes like this by becoming a patron at: https://www.patreon.com/ctrlaltrightdeleteMusic: Skalle Pierre

Melissa is an old friend who is one of America's top experts on extremism and disinformation, particularly as it pertains to targeting the US elections. We talked to Daily Beast reporter Gideon Resnick, NYU historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat, and activist / pundit Melissa Ryan about their thoughts on President Donald Trump's interview with the New York Times.
Each of Donald Trump's cabinet nominees seems uniquely positioned to destroy the very governmental agency they will be administering. Rick Perry, the latest nominee, famously forgot that the department even existed. In the meantime, while most observers note that the revelation that Russia hacked the election in order to give it to Trump, the President-Elect continues to pooh pooh the report -- while continuing to skip his daily Presidential Briefings. The one glimmer of hope: the growing list of electors who have asked for the intel before they vote next week... and rumors that the number of Republican "faithless electors" who are interested in voting for an alternate candidate is as high as 20. Trump's team must be worried about that - they have threatened anyone who changes their vote with political consequences. MOMocrats Karoli and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss with guest Melissa Ryan of Ctrl Alt-Right Delete Newsletter. Ryan is a veteran of both politics and technology since the early days of the Netroots and has worked with campaigns from local to Presidential.
Today I am talking to Melissa Ryan who directs the DC strategy team at Trilogy Interactive which is a strategy, design and technology firm for political campaigns, non-profits and labor unions. She’s incredible. Take a listen!
