Fifteen years ago, The Boondocks changed the course of modern animation by not only featuring Black characters as the leads, but by being absolutely unapologetic in its content. That boundary-pushing show gained its own following along with a fair share of backlash, all of which is now par for the course for executive producer Carl Jones and producer Brian Ash. They've had celebrities like Oprah and Tyler Perry take issue with (and aim at) The Boondocks, just as they've had Adult Swim axe an episode before it was ever animated and HBO Max fully removing a previously aired episode from their listing. Censorship and button-pushing isn't new to Jones and Ash. Their newest animated series, Sugar and Toys, is cut from the same cloth, and the razor-sharp humor and laugh-out-loud variety sketches cut across all social, cultural, and political divides. It's first and foremost good comedy, but it's also another step in the rise of Black Animation. I had a chance to chat with Jones and Ash about Season 2 of Sugar and Toys, now on Fuse, in a lengthy conversation about everything from COVID-19, standards & practices, The Boondocks reboot, and Jones' upcoming collaborations with Matthew Cherry for his Hair Love series, and the likes of Seth MacFarlane, Steph Curry, and Norman Lear for an animated reboot of the classic sitcom Good Times. We talked about all of that and more in an honest and open conversation, which you can listen to above or read highlights of below. Sugar and Toys is a mash-up of Saturday morning cartoons (which is fitting for this particular podcast), social commentary and music culture parody. Season 2 of the Sunday night series "brings a wild new twist on the Saturday morning cartoons we all grew up with – but a whole lot less innocent. Bookended by host and multi-platinum rapper and actor KYLE (Netflix’s The After Party, www.superduperkyle.com), it's executive produced by Aengus James, Colin King Miller, Jordan Allen-Dutton, Jones and Ash, with Kyle Harvey serving as co-executive producer, and produced by This is Just a Test and 245 Enterprises. - Support the Show through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/saturdaymourningcartoons - Want to find our cohosts online? If popular media is any indication, promoting self-acceptance of black hair is gaining some serious ground. I caught up with Latashia to talk about the inspiration behind her books, what’s next for her growing company, and what life is like being a mompreneur. Audiences may remember the animated short entitiled Hair Love by Matthew Cherry. That short took the Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards earlier this year. And it’s currently being made into an extended animated series running on HBOMax. Side note— animator Carl Jones of Boondocks fame is also set to be attached to the series. Meanwhile, Latashia Perry’s book series is all over YouTube—there are tons of channels featuring both teachers and kids reading her books aloud receiving thousands of views. And often Perry is not the only black children’s author to be featured. All of this could be a sign that ethnic hair is becoming far more normalized. But the added element to all of this is of course supporting women and black-owned businesses. The nuances to this are distinct for every particular city and town. I encourage everyone to check out Latshia’s books and to keep an eye out for a bookmobile headed near you. Thanks as well to Adrian and James for sharing the heart and vision for Flint SOUP. The relationships between emerging entrepreneurs and the organizations that support them can be truly transformational. That’s why coming up on the GigRoots podcast, we’ll look to feature more in-depth interviews like this one that can help provide multiple dimensions to the story of grassroots economics in America. In this episode, I discuss how 2 children's literature books are examples of ‘Black girl literacy' (Muhammad & Haddix, 2016) –a teaching framework that is necessary for affirming and empowering the reading and writing identities of Black adolescent girls. This episode provides a context as to why and how teachers can incorporate culturally relevant literacies for Black girls in elementary schools. Some key takeaways are: · I am Enough by Grace Byers and Keturah Bobo is a beautiful, inspiring book that promotes the multiple ways that Black girls can accept and love themselves enough to say and believe that “I am enough”. · “Hair Love” by Matthew Cherry and Vashti Harrison has a very empowering and warm message that promotes family, self-acceptance, quality time, inner and physical beauty, and just plain ol' love. Courage before Confidence (0:00:00) Many of us struggle with confidence at some point in our lives. With all of our weaknesses, shortcomings, and insecurities, it takes a lot of guts to be proud of who we are and love ourselves despite what other people may say. So how do we find courage to be ourselves and ultimately regain our self-confidence? Well our next guest did just that. Growing up with a cleft lip and palate, Amy Wilde had to find her courage is now a confident author and advocate for people struggling with the same physical trial. She joins us today to share her story and tips for gaining more courage and confidence in ourselves. Hair Love (0:20:05) Whether you watched the Oscars last month or not, you might recognize the short film title—“Hair Love”, which won the academy award for Best Animated Short Film. The writer and director, Matthew Cherry, wanted to promote hair love among young men and women of color, which isn't represented in mainstream media nearly enough. Bryce Randle, film and TV editor at Disney TV animation, joined the “Hair Love” team as a side project to pay for his kids' summer camp. Little did he know, this animated short would win an Oscar, while helping break black stereotypes. Bryce is here to talk to us about his work on the project as an animation editor. Interior Design Trends (0:35:41) Spring is in the air and as you go about your spring cleaning there's a chance you've also had the urge to freshen up the look of your home. Maybe you want to change the color of the paint on the walls, buy new couch pillows, or rearrange the photos in your living room. But before you get started changing things, we wanted to update you on current trends, and right now, 80's interior design styles are making a comeback. What does this look like? Well, we invited Carrie Ann Rhodes, friend of the show and interior designer, to help you make your home “bodacious” instead of “bogus” as they said in the 80s. The Conversation (0:50:36) Facing the end of a parent or loved one's life is an emotional and overwhelming experience. You want to be sure they're comfortable. You want to be true to their wishes. But when it's thrown on you—it's difficult to know what they right answer is, and the health care system isn't always great with holding your hand through that. Here to help us better prepare for having The Conversation with our loved ones about end of life care is Angelo Volandes and Aretha Davis, co-founders of Advance Care Planning Decisions. Lisa and ALS (1:06:58) Lisa opens up about her experience since her husband was diagnosed with ALS four years ago. To learn more about ALS and to donate to research, you can visit alsa.org.
Demi Lovato, Gabriel Kunda, Matthew Cherry and Na'im Lynn all have two things in common: They realized that their voices were their own personal microphones and that what they spoke would became sound and that sound would be magnified. And they chose to magnify certain dreams of their heart to the world, their audience and we got to see how the sound they magnified, actually manifested. If all we are is one mic, what is the sound that you're magnifying to the audience around you? On this episode, we begin by mourning the fall of our champion Deontay Wilder on this last week of Black History Month. We then give a brief recap NAACP image awards and discuss the empowering lesson that can be learned from being in spaces like that. Next, it was important to acknowledge Kobe and GiGi's memorial service and to thank Vanessa Bryant for sharing that moment with us. By using Nipsey's mother's words to help us heal from the losses, we begin to think about legacy and lessons that we can learn from both Nip and Kobe. Are you trying to make it out or make it with? We question what does it mean to Buy Back the Block? Finally, we spotlight Matthew Cherry for his work on "Hair Love" & discuss the natural hair movement, "good hair", and the politics of Black women's hair.
History of the Leap Year (0:00:00) Let's see if you can guess what I'm talking about. It happens almost every four years. There was a movie made after it. And those who were lucky enough to be born on this day can claim they are much younger than they actually are. Yes, it's Leap Day! Tomorrow, February 29th, also known as Leap Day, is when our calendar realigns itself with the Earth's motion. But where did leap day originate from? Believe it or not, the history of leap day actually goes back thousands of years before our time. Today we are joined by John Lowe, a scientist emeritus for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to talk about Leap Day and why it exists. Helping Friends with Hospitalized Kids (0:15:21) One of the most important parts of friendship is being there for the people you love. This can be challenging sometimes, especially when the people we love are stressed or worried. One especially hard time for parents is when they have a sick child, especially if that child has been admitted to the hospital. How can we make this experience easier for our friends? Joining us today to share some insight is Dr. James Kirk Bass, a neonatologist and pediatrician with the University of Tennessee Medical Center. What to Do When Your Computer Breaks Down (0:33:08) Tech expert and friend of the show Joel Jacobs talks with Lisa and Richie about what we should do when our computer crashes in order to save our files. Cultural Appropriation (0:50:38) At the Oscars earlier this month, Oscar winner and Hair Love director Matthew Cherry gave a shout out to special guest DeAndre Arnold. DeAndre is a high school senior who the Hair Love team invited to the Oscars after his school told him he wouldn't be able to walk at graduation because of his dread locks. DeAndre is just one of many children of color who are penalized at school for wearing natural or stylized hair that is deemed “unprofessional.” On the last day of Black History Month, we wanted to discuss this issue a little more with cosmetologist and textured hair expert Maria Antoinette Loggins. She joins us to talk about why it's more than just hair. Self-Compassion (1:06:22) All of us have days where we feel like we can't do anything right and beating ourselves up is so easy. But we also know that it's really not good to do this. It's so hard to get out of this habit. How can we show ourselves more compassion? Here to help us learn how to develop self-compassion as we travel our own paths is Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen. They are the co-founders of The Wisdom Coalition. Weekend Review (1:24:53) Lisa and Richie talk about what's happening this weekend, from new movies and shows to the community events happening near you.
Hola Chismosas! So, Black History Month may be ending, but there’s no ending to black excellence. Let’s get into ehhh! Black people continue to make history and are being recognized for their achievements. Black skin, black hair, black experiences are being portrayed in animation thanks to a group of black creatives who took it upon themselves to create the now Oscar-winning best animated short film, "Hair Love." Matthew Cherry, thank you! (7:55). Zaya Wade is living her truth! She shared with her family and has allowed her father, Dwayne Wade, to share with the world that she is transgender, (18:02). How are black women able to do all the things?!? The Netflix documentary “She Did That!” gives us some insight into the experiences of black women entrepreneurs who are getting it done! We are here for this, let’s talk about ehhh! (30:55). Take away: Representation matters! This week the hometown Jaguars announced that the team would be playing 2 back to back games in London next season and the fans arent happy at all. The owner says its a business decision to help the franchise..... but is it really? The XFL is off and running to a good start but will it last? Also an Oscar was won by a former NFL player but Big Sofa says he wasn't really a Jaguars player.
Matthew Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver’s short "Hair Love" won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short. Watch the film below.
Let's talk hair. As a young girl I struggled with my curly hair. So I can relate to the Best Animated Short Oscar winner, which you can watch for free ( https://youtu.be/kNw8V_Fkw28 ) on Sony Pictures Animation YouTube channel. I include the acceptance speeches in which the Hair Love's director and writer Matthew Cherry mentions the importance of passing the CROWN Act nationwide. There's currently an online OrganizeFor petition that's advocating for the bill that would make it illegal to discriminate against anyone for their hairstyles in both the workplace and in schools. California, New York, and New Jersey are currently the only states in the United States to pass the CROWN Act. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sabah-fakhoury/message

While at SXSW, I had the chance to talk to director Matthew Cherry about his film 9 Rides and his thoughts on being a working director at a time when diversity in Hollywood is probably the hottest topic. 9 Rides marks his second feature film to premiere at SXSW. In addition, he's directed short films, music videos with Snoop Dogg, Common, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and Beyonce. It was a terrific conversation and he was awesome... my only regret was not asking him if his soul was forever enlightened by staring into Queen Bey's eyes.
Writing on the Air was lucky enough to be able to cover the 2016 SXSW Film Festival that descended on Austin earlier this March. Listen to our interview with Matthew Cherry, writer and director of the film 9 Rides.
