The journey of caregiving is a delicate dance of emotions and responsibilities, especially for parents of disabled children who face societal pressures. Home and community care services provide essential support and respite, allowing families to maintain a safe environment and caregivers to recharge. Self-care, such as meditation or exercise, is critical for caregivers to sustain their well-being and continue their responsibilities.   In this episode, host Annette Hines sits with Kelley Coleman as she shares her journey of parenting a disabled child, revealing how it led her to write "No One Tells You About Parenting a Disabled Child: Your Guide to the Essential Systems, Services, and Supports." Kelley expresses the importance of accessing accurate information and insights directly from individuals with disabilities to combat stigma and misconceptions. Her book serves as a practical guide for caregivers, filled with invaluable checklists, personal stories, and strategies for self-care, effective communication, and advocacy. Kelley and Annette bond over their shared love for practical tools, discussing the significance of job training in caregiving and urging caregivers to establish boundaries and prioritize their well-being. They reflect on their own experiences, the emotional toll of caregiving, and the power of a supportive community.   In this episode, you will hear: Why it is important to seek insights from individuals with disabilities Addressing the challenges faced by parents of disabled children How caregivers can prioritize self-care and establish boundaries Why it is important to advocate for home and community-based care services What resources are available for caregivers of children with disabilities Resources from this Episode: Kelley Coleman: www.kelleycoleman.com  Facebook:  @kelley.coleman.56 Instagram: @hellokelleycoleman    Engage with us: Join our community: Circle of Care Visit:  https://annettehines.com Read Butterflies and Second Chances LinkedIn: @annette-hines-snc  Instagram: @parentingimpossible Facebook: @SpecialNeedsCompanies Twitter: @SpecialNeedsCo   Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Although I do live a dual life when it comes to colleagues, co-workers, and friends, I am an open book to the right people. The author of Living with crossdressing - the new normal, discusses more about her life than many people do with whom she interacts with on a daily basis.Savannah is from Detroit, Michigan, where the climate of acceptability in the 80s and 90s was less than stellar for crossdressers and other transgender folks. Twenty years ago, she moved to the big city of Manhattan Island for work-related reasons and discovered a world (or a couple of boroughs) where alternative lifestyles were so much more socially acceptable. Eventually, Savannah moved out onto Long Island to live, work, love and explore both my masculinity and femininity. Now, she currently lives in a new regional culture of the Upstate of South Carolina.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/no-limits-podcast--5110273/support.

Becoming Your Best Version
A Conversation with Ginnie Cover, Author/Advocate for Those with Disabilities and Their Families

Becoming Your Best Version

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2024 31:34

Virginia (Ginnie) Isaacs Cover has worked throughout her career with children and adults with complex medical conditions and developmental disabilities. She is an advocate for those with disabilities and their families and published a widely read guidebook for those affected by X and Y chromosome variations. She explores the impact of a prenatal diagnosis on a young family in her new book, Supplemental Needs: A Novel. Ginnie became a “special needs parent” when her younger son was diagnosed prenatally with 47,XXY, also known as Klinefelter syndrome. Although sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA) is more common than Down syndrome at an estimated 1 in 400 live births, it is recognized and properly diagnosed in fewer than 25 percent of the affected population. She became a passionate advocate for families affected by disabilities, including the X and Y chromosome variations, and provides educational programs for families and professionals who work with this population. In 2012, she published Living with Klinefelter Syndrome, Trisomy X, and 47,XYY. The book provides clear explanations of the genetics involved, as well as diagnosis, disclosure, development from infancy through potential health and fertility issues, and educational and psycho-social considerations. This guidebook has helped thousands of people grow their understanding of this condition. She believes it is equally important for literature to cover the emotional impact that prenatal testing has on parents while also improving early identification of X and Y chromosome conditions. She felt this could only be done through the sharing of stories. Her goal in writing the novel was to explore the impact of a prenatal genetic diagnosis on a young family who decides to continue a pregnancy despite a medical geneticist's advice. Supplemental Needs: A Novel portrays a young family whose lives change on learning through prenatal genetic diagnosis that their baby will have Klinefelter syndrome, most likely causing some degree of disability, as well as infertility and possible sexuality issues. In this episode, Ginnie speaks about prenatal counseling; termination of pregnancy when chromosomal variations exist; societal acceptance of KS, the neurodiverse, LGBTQ individuals and how it has changed over time; and attitudes in Judaism toward LGBTQ individuals and why these are so different across the branches (Reform, Conservative, Orthodox) Supplemental Needs incorporates accurate information and creates needed conversation around what we each believe about continuing a pregnancy where there may be some level of disability, or when there may be a slightly elevated rate of homosexuality, or of gender dysphoria. Readers gain greater awareness and understanding about the parental experience of when a child is not following a typical developmental trajectory, familiarizing the public with sex chromosome aneuploidy in a non-sensational manner. "I want readers to experience the sadness, fear, and hopefulness felt by [the characters] as they wrestle with the choices that must be made, and the impact they have on their son, and their family," Ginnie says. "Through the characters and events, readers will also confront the research suggesting that sexual orientation and identity may be heavily influenced by DNA." Ginnie lives in the Washington, D.C., metro area and has two adult sons and three grandchildren. She volunteers through her synagogue for the Interfaith Refugee Support group. She also is a board member for L'Arche Long Island, a non-profit agency providing housing for adults with developmental disabilities, vocational and life skills training. Ginnie holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan. Alexandra Allred, an athlete, author, environmental advocate, and fitness instructor, shared the story behind her title with us on March 1, 2023.Alexandra made sports (and medical) history through activism and determination. When she learned that women were not allowed in bobsled, she lobbied for equal status with a relentless letter-writing campaign. It had not yet occurred to her that she had no idea how to actually bobsled. As a former fighter in martial arts, she had only cared that women were banned from a sport deemed “too dangerous” and “too fast.”When told that the women's program had no by-laws and was therefore unofficial, Allred co-authored the first U.S. women's bylaws and helped secure a sponsor. She ultimately won the U.S. Nationals in September 1994, making sports history as she was named to the first-ever U.S. women's bobsled team. When the United States Olympic Committee named her Athlete of the Year for her sport, it made international news that Allred was also pregnant. At the time, there was very little data on elite pregnant athletes who did powerlifting and plyometrics. While Allred became the “poster child” of the Case Western OB/GYN international study, Allred was squatting 375 lbs. and clocked at 20 MPH sprints into her second trimester.  The results of this study changed how to measure the safety of baby in utero for competitive athletes. Both the United States and International Olympic Committee used Allred's training data as a safety guide for pregnant athletes and she served as a fitness/nutrition expert for two decades. Upon retirement, Sports Illustrated asked her to try out for a women's professional football team and write about her experiences in the award-winning book, Atta Girl! A Celebration of Women in Sport (Wish Publishing). Allred later became the first American (male or female) to test drive the Volvo Gravity car for Volvo magazine in North America.SUE SAYS"Alex made history through activism and sheer determination after learning that women were not allowed to participate in bobsled. She lobbied for equal status by launching a relentless letter-writing campaign at the powers that be. Although she had no idea how to actually bobsled, she cared that women were banned from a sport deemed “too dangerous” and “too fast” and decided to do something about it. For the 50th episode of Stories of Service, I go back to the core of why I started a show, which is how our stories of trauma can not only be a catalyst for helping us heal, but being of service to others. Gloria Masters is a Survivor, Author, and Advocate for child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors. She speaks from sixteen years of lived experience and has managed to turn the final corner of healing into giving back. She does this by highlighting the issue of CSA to help others. She is just about to publish her second book, Flightpath to Healing, which is a guide for survivors. She provides untold resources on Gloriamasters.com. and runs the YouTube channel Handing the Shame Back, (also available on major podcast outlets). Her focus is on hope, love, and joy and she follows her Angels wherever they lead her. Here is the background of her book I could not put down. It's June 1960, and in middle-class suburban New Zealand, a child was born into sex slavery. For the first sixteen years of her life, Gloria suffered horrendous sexual, physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her father, with no one to protect her. From the underworld of her father's pedophile ring to the groups he trafficked her to, she found an inner strength and a light that shone so brightly, that her mind was the one thing that could not be destroyed.Experienced through the eyes of a child, On Angels Wings will forever highlight the way we deal with child abuse, shining a light on this darkness, and challenging us not to assume that every child is safe. One voice speaking out is all it takes to save a life. You can learn more about Gloria here - https://gloriamasters.com/

This is a fire their family has walked out of, when her ex-husband (also an ex-pastor) was convicted of horrific crimes against children. I am grateful for this mighty woman of God. She is helping others find safety and healing. Check out her blog here: https://findingahealingplace.com/. Hello, hello, hello! Still mourning the end of the live #Ham4Ham? This might help: Howard Sherman, the unofficial (but still pretty official) #Ham4Ham videographer, stops by the room where the podcast happens to tell us about his experience recording these great performances. We braved the Heat Dome to talk about Lin-Manuel Miranda's generosity and genuineness, Howard's favorite #Ham4Hams, and why he thought they needed to be preserved and shared. Good luck with the lotto!
