When it comes to clean energy, we often hear about wind and solar, but there are other, perhaps less-talked about, renewable sources to include in our energy transition portfolio. In this episode, we focus on geothermal, which uses heat from the earth to generate energy. You may have heard of the Geysers in northern California, the world's largest geothermal field, or the Salton Sea in southern California, the second largest geothermal field in the U.S. However, in 2022, just 0.4% of U.S. electricity generation came from geothermal energy. Can we harness the potential of the earth's heat in more than just volcanic regions? To address this question, Justine and Paulina speak with Dr. Birendra Jha, a professor of petroleum engineering at USC who runs a research group, the GEM Lab, which aims to address engineering challenges related to energy. We talk about what geothermal energy is, why geothermal seems to be less popular than other sources like wind and solar, and the challenges and benefits of an emerging technology, Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS), which could expand where geothermal energy is produced. Jim then speaks with Minh Tran, a geothermal engineer with a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from USC, who is studying ways to more effectively transform geothermal heat into electricity. We talk about whether skills from oil and gas are transferable to geothermal, the potential of EGS in the energy transition, and the importance of financing and policy incentives in expanding geothermal. 2:21 Interview with Dr. Jha 36:28 Interview with Minh Tran 55:48 Concluding Remarks Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast so you can automatically get access to our new episodes – you can find us on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Senior Class President Minh Tran '23 addressed the entire school at a school meeting in January to talk about how his perception of graduation has changed, what it was like to travel home to Vietnam and learn virtually during the pandemic, and the memories he holds close to him.
In this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Minh Tran, founding partner of Mandalore Partners (and also her co-founder at Alchemy Crew) about the world of Venture Capital Funds. He has worked in the Corporate VC world for 30 years, most recently in financial services and founding Mandalore Partners 10 years ago. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you are a Corporate Venturer you have two models, one is to invest in VC outside – that’s not really a corporate venture, but you have that option, the second is to create your own team internally, for many reasons, this model hasn’t worked in the long run. I came up with a third model, which is how to externalize corporate venture funds – to reach out to startups with both a financial interest and a strategic alignment of corporates. This is Venture Capital as a Service. Resilience comes from lateral thinking too when investing. You can enter the market of your core industry, but you can also reach out to new industries that can impact your core industry. If you’re a retailer, you invest in your core business, but FinTech could disrupt retail finance, so you could reach out to FinTech ventures, not just retail. So you’re prepared for disruption. SIDE – Source, Invest, Develop, Exit. Each step of our process has been optimized. Source is the ability to source better than a corporation, we combine public data (Crunchbase) with private data (corporate assignments) to come up with a list of startups. We then invest like a VC. We develop a portfolio management plan like a VC, but I do things differently, more hands-on than VCs. Then Exit, again I use VC techniques to exit at some point with or without the corporate. Like any VC I look at if the market is growing, how the product would fit in the market, what is the business model/plan, and what is the team? I also look at a fifth element: The leverage we can access from the corporation. This could help accelerate the startup or the valuation of the startup. BEST MOMENTS ‘The Mandalore Partners name came from a planet from Star Wars because I wanted to look to the future and I found out it was a good name to have because it was about mobility, globality, tech, and now The Mandalorian TV series.’ ‘There’s a bad reputation to having a corporate venture fund in the market that has the same name as your corporation, this is why externalizing VC activities and having a different name is attracting more startups to our fund while also providing the returns the corporates want.’ ‘When we talk to corporates when they’re looking to InsurTech and they want to be exposed to another tech, an external model can help you assess the new industries you seek where you have or you don’t have expertise.’ ‘I focus a lot of work on where to invest to have the best impact tools and platforms.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Minh is the Managing Partner of Mandalore Partners, which seeks to create an innovative framework that enables investors of firms in early stages to achieve scale exposure to a range of traditional, alternative, and tech venture capital assets. Minh Tran’s family moved from Vietnam to the US after the Vietnam War. As the youngest of 8, Minh was born and raised in Michigan. As an entrepreneur, Minh has combined his passion for sports and his entrepreneurial spirit and created a rapidly- growing international business called Executive Fan. Executive Fan is an innovative, manufacturing, marketing, and distributing company focused on bringing fans unique products that connect them with their favorite sports teams. The first product on the market is a special type of office, packaging, and duct tape with college logos called Fan Tape. The idea was developed in 2009 by Minh and a few of his friends—all avid sports fans—and they began in a basement, testing samples and working on licensing and market analysis. Their first customer was Meijer, and they have since expanded to major colleagues across the US, as well as pharmacies such as Walgreens. Minh’s advice to young entrepreneurs is to stick with your vision and don’t get off the path. “I started at one of the worst times for businesses and I survived,” said Tran. “If you believe in it, do it.” Minh soon launched Executive Fan into a successful global business and sold it in 2016. Currently, Mihn is the Board President of Leander HS Golf Booster Club and a member of the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce. He lives in Texas with his wife and his beautiful family.
Hear from Denise Garth and Minh Tran as they discuss the importance prioritizing innovation plans in today's business strategies.
