Send us a textOn this episode of the Midwest Mixtape Podcast, Monique Powell—better known as Mo from the legendary ska-punk band Save Ferris—joins The Mox from the Midwest Mixtape Podcast for an incredible conversation that dives deep into her journey, challenges, and triumphs in the music industry. From battling Zoom issues and wrangling kittens to a massive spring tour and music video shoot, Mo shares it all with her signature authenticity and humor. They explore the powerful role music plays as therapy and community, reflect on the evolving treatment of women in the industry, and get candid about Mo's experiences as a studio vocalist, including ghost singing and collaborating with icons like Reel Big Fish. Mo also discusses stepping into band management and the empowerment that comes from taking control of your own path. Save Ferris' cover of “Come On Eileen” is the track that launched the band into the spotlight, transforming the 1982 Dexys Midnight Runners classic into a high-energy, horn-driven ska anthem that became a staple of the late ‘90s alternative scene. Frontwoman Monique Powell's powerhouse vocals and the band's infectious, upbeat arrangement gave the song a bold new identity, blending nostalgia with rebellious spirit. It not only showcased Save Ferris' unique ability to reimagine familiar tunes but also helped define the ska-punk movement of the era, earning them heavy radio play, MTV exposure, and a permanent place in the hearts of fans who still shout along to every word. It’s hard to be in a bad mood after a Save Ferris show. They are simply a fun band to see live, and their shows are a great way to kinda forget all the (looks around) madness going on in the world. That was reinforced on Saturday, August 26, when Save Ferris returned to Chicago to kick off their “Get Dancing” tour at Chop Shop (2033 W. North). I sat down with frontwoman Monique Powell after the show to talk about: Launching the tour specifically in Chicago The topic of aging in music, something she brought up during the Save Ferris performance My local “SPAM” sighting on Elston Avenue The spooky vibes of “Lights Out in the Reptile House” Debuting the single “Get Dancing” on stage in Chicago The current slow drip of singles … what’s it leading up to? Pick it up (please)! Its a ska special in MLPP Towers this week, and what better way to usher in the summer than to have a chat with Save Ferris' very own Monique Powell! She's been in movies, toured the world and gets mentioned in autobiographies and has taken time to speak with the fat lads about being mates with Two-Tone legends, Bro Culture, living in Birmingham, protesting and most importantly, Save Ferris' upcoming new releases and tour.Sadly there is no Aldi report this week as it wasn't Tom's turn to go. But we do have: Niallism gets the memo about the ska special, being inspired in your sleep, a tasty reminder of our flurry of Manchester Punk Festival activity and for the first ever time, we feel the need to tell people off. You've let me down, you've let the podcast down...etc etc.Music this week is by: Another One, The Slackers, Madness, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Sadaxe

Music Matters host Darrell Craig Harris speaks with Monique Powell long-time lead vocalist for the popular ska/rock band “Save Ferris” from her home in Garden Grove, California! #saveferris #skaband #podcast WHERE IT ALL BEGAN Save Ferris is a ska-punk band formed in Orange County, California circa 1995. Their name is a reference to the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Lead by the inimitable front-woman Monique Powell, the band enjoyed mainstream success in the late 1990s with radio hits, constant touring and appearances on a variety of television shows and movies. The band released their debut EP "Introducing Save Ferris" on Powell's own Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, thanks to loyal fans and huge support from Orange County independent record shops. That same year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fish song "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo). https://www.SaveFerris.com Social Media / saveferrisofficialband PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! Noel catches up with Monique Powell of Save Ferris. The ska-punk band formed in Orange County, CA in 1995. Their name is a reference to Ferris Bueller's Day Off. They're best known for their cover of Dexys Midnight Runners “Come on Eileen." They appeared in the movie, "Ten Things I Hate About You." After two albums, they broke up in 2002. Monique got the rights to the Save Ferris name and put together a new band. They released the EP, Checkered Past, in 2017. Their latest single, "Lights Out in the Reptile House," came out this year.
Save Ferris has something not a lot of ska bands have- longevity. They're back on the road and recording new music and bringing fans young and old into the band's orbit. We talked with lead singer, songwriter Monique Powell about reptiles, opera music and, of course, which Dead Kennedy's song they can't play for children. (Well, one specific song.)"Lights Out at the Reptile House" is available to stream wherever you find your music. And the band is out on the road, right now, bringing the good times to your city soon. For more information, check out the band's website, or follow them on Facebook.
Monique Powell is the lead singer of this legendary ska punk band from Orange County CA, who have been blazing their on trail in music for three decades now.
Formed in 1995, Save Ferris remains one of the seminal and most beloved bands from the third wave of ska. The group's Orange County home was fertile ground for a thriving music scene, with punk, rock, and ska emerging from the region. Save Ferris blended the best elements of these sounds to help bring the region's sound to the world. The group's humble beginnings saw them play house parties and local venues, powered by Monique Powell's high-octane vocals. Save Ferris' live show instantly became a hit. Known for their cover of "Come On Eileen," their hit single "The World Is New," and a feature in the motion picture "10 Things I Hate About You"- Save Ferris was atop of the world. After a hiatus that ran from 2003 to 2013, and some "legal hoopla": Powell and her bandmates went into the studio to record a new EP in 2016. The end result was an upbeat collection called: "Checkered Past."Following the release, Save Ferris played the entire 2017 Warped Tour on the main stage, headlined shows, and played festivals across the world. The future is as bright as it has been for Save Ferris in a long time. Powell scrapped a record she wrote prior to the pandemic and is currently at work on the first new Save Ferris album in nearly two decades. A lot of amazing shows in 2024: Powell has proven why she is the centerpiece of the action. Her dazzling on- stage presence continues to wow audiences and the band's energy is infectious. Save Ferris are out to prove that they're no nostalgia act, with their best days still ahead of them.

Today's Episode Dr. Raj talks with Monique Powell from ska band Save Ferris. They discuss their shared love of the genre, her journey from ballet to opera to punk rock, and the importance of mental health advocacy in the creative community. Today's Guest Monique Powell was classically trained from the age of 11 with a passion for punk at the age of 9. While her first love was ballet, she knew she was going to be in a band after hearing The Specials for the first time at 13. At 19, after singing in an all-girls ska band and Zappa-inspired experiment called Larry, Monique found herself singing in an Orange County ska band called Save Ferris. Little did she know, she was living smack in the middle of a music phenomenon. Save Ferris was part of what soon became known as the third wave of ska music. Within months, Save Ferris was signed to Epic Records and spent the following years touring the world. In 2013, Monique acquired full ownership of the band name. Under her leadership, Monique has been riding higher than ever, shimmying, burlesquing, and belting her way from stage to stage and country to country spreading her gospel. Monique being a survivor of many things, her life goal is to help and to heal. Save Ferris is performing at House of Blues Anaheim on November 18, 2022! The debut Save Ferris album It Means Everything is everything you know and love/hate about 90s ska-punk. The snappy snare, the upstroke guitar lines, the energetic horn stabs - all the hallmarks of the familiar 90s sound utilized by early No Doubt, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish and others. Save Ferris don’t break the mold, but they do add a few extra layers, inserting a distorted guitar from time to time, as well as taking advantage of Monique Powell’s pipes to slow down the tempos into classic reggae and dub influenced grooves. Neither of us are ska punk aficionados, or really fans for that matter, but did Save Ferris win us over? Tune in to find out. Songs in this Episode: Intro - Come On Eileen 18:11 - Lies 22:56 - SuperSpy 32:20 - The World Is New Outro - Goodbye Request a 2017 Review / Subscribe at Patreon Facebook / Twitter / Instagram Zazzle Merch Store http://www.digmeoutpodcast.com
