Most of the main branches of the Restoration were formed within roughly two decades of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. One clear exception, however, is the Mormon Fundamentalist movement. Here's a little backstory: In 1890 President Wilford Woodruff issued a manifesto announcing the Church's intention to submit to those laws recently passed and declared constitutional by the US Supreme Court forbidding plural marriage. Then in 1904, as a result of the Reed Smoot hearings before the US Senate and the national attention this brought to the continued practice of plural marriage in Utah, President Joseph F. Smith issued what is known as the “Second Manifesto,” which announced the Church's policy to excommunicate anyone who continued to enter into new polygamous marriages.  Yet some Church members felt that the manifestos of Presidents Woodruff and Smith were not inspired. Instead, they saw them as weak and uninspired capitulations to government demands rather than a continued courageous commitment to God's commands in the face of persecution. Within a few decades, those who dissented against these manifestos or were excommunicated from the LDS Church for entering into additional plural marriages began to gather on the Utah/Arizona border at a place known as Short Creek. They believed in a 1912 statement by Lorin C. Woolley, who had been courier for President John Taylor, about an unpublished 1886 revelation of President Taylor wherein the Lord declared that the “New and Everlasting Covenant” had not been revoked, nor would it ever be. This was interpreted by those in this group to mean that plural marriage would never be withdrawn. They concluded therefore that President Taylor's unpublished revelation (and their interpretation of it) overruled and superceded the first manifesto of President Woodruff in 1890 and the second manifesto of President Smith in 1904. They were staying true to this core fundamental element of Mormonism while the LDS Church was not.   In time these Mormon Fundamentalists fragmented into various groups, including the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or FLDS Church), the Apostolic United Brethren (or AUB), the Righteous Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Saints of the Last Days, among others.  In this episode of Church History Matters, Casey and I sit down with Dr. Brian Hales, an expert researcher and author of several books on the Mormon fundamentalist movement, to discuss this fascinating branch of the Restoration.  For show notes and transcript for this and other episodes go to https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

But I won't deny that just like monogamous marriages abuse does happen and when it does women and children need help. However not all organizations that offer that help are created equal. This was never more on display than during the days of the wicked priest-tyrant Warren Jeffs. As folks reached out for help to get away from him there were organizations all too eager to help but would do so with strings attached like putting a camera in the survivor's face and profiting off of their pain for reality T.V. ratings and then berating some of the survivors' religious beliefs. However, there is one organization that I feel does it right and that is Cherish Families. Cherish Families was founded and is largely staffed by people from polygamous backgrounds both practicing and non-practicing. With their deep understanding of the fears and barriers that people from our faith community can experience, they are compassionate, empathetic, and uniquely qualified to serve the Mormon Fundamentalist community all without profiting off the survivor's pain or forcing them to denounce their religious beliefs. Today I have Shirlee Draper on from Cherish Families and we have a discussion about how the organization was founded, how they seek to fulfill their mission, and what you could do to help if you feel so inclined.    https://cherishfamilies.org/ https://cherishfamilies.org/who-we-are/frequently-asked-question.html#content_24c94869fe754a439e20f7bcd2dbb8f2_item_14840325 --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

Now it's up to us to parse out those stories and traditions and then decide if they are doctrine or just ideas. Today on the podcast we are going to cover a topic that will require us to do just that. Back in the early days of the Restoration there was an idea that in the last days a Lamanite prophet would arise and set certain things within Mormonism in what came to be known as the Prophecy of the Lamanite Prophet. Moroni Lopez Jessop joins me fresh off his Sunstone talk about this very subject to take a look at this story and teaching. We cover where this idea started, how it was understood by early Mormons, how it fell out of favor with the LDS Church, how it was kept alive by Mormon Fundamentalists, and what its relevance is today given the gift of hindsight.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

Taylors excommunication, Francis Lyman's inquisition of those living and solemnizing plural marriages and along the way there is some pretty pointed questions asked about Mormon hierarchy during this time, and we wrap it all up by talking about what John W. No matter who I talk to, folks from the LDS Church, Mormon Fundamentalists, Baptists, Lutherans, or Catholics one thing seems to be very evident and that is if we are tuned in even a little bit to God we all have the sense that society and the world are hurtling towards an event that feels like it is picking up speed and intensity. Now if we are a religion that focuses on Jesus Christ our minds naturally and rightfully so turn to His Second Coming. Today on the podcast I have on Morgan Philpot. Morgan is a former attorney and Utah Legislator. Because he has been in these circles and is also a devout follower of the Savior, he has some pretty interesting insights. Morgan has put together a really compelling timeline for last days events that I think is worth some conversation. In this episode we have a discussion about that timeline as we explore these themes we also touch on Ezra's Eagle, and also some striking parallels between the southern kingdom of Judah and also some events from third Nephi to modern day Utah. As Morgan draws these parallels, they point to some things happening to Utah that is not ideal. Towards the end of this episode, I make a major announcement concerning me and my family so you will want to stick around for that for sure.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

After a year and a half, Bo's art and career as a well-known  and respected artist exploded    Growing up in a Mormon Fundamentalist religion in Utah, Bo was raised in what he describes as a ‘conditional love' environment that suffocated his dreams, aspirations, and authentic self.  After leaving the church, he was abandoned by many of those who he believed loved him which led to feeling more alone and isolated than ever.  Addiction attempted suicide and eventually, an awakening is the core of this deep, rich conversation on this episode of Chats and Tatts.     TIMESTAMPS    0:02:16   Overcoming Trauma and Finding Art   0:04:16   Finding Self-Worth Through Art   0:07:37   Love and Religion   0:08:57   Reconnecting with a Father Figure    0:11:06   Unconditional Love and the Power of Intention in Relationships   0:13:37   Importance of Work-Life Balance   0:15:22   Balancing Art and Family Life   0:17:02   Breaking Point: Leaving the Mormon Church and Struggling with Addiction   0:20:47   Overcoming Mental Health Struggles and Trauma 0:24:00   Interview with Tattoo Artist: Exploring the Meaning Behind a 350-Hour Masterpiece   0:27:31  The Impact of Psychedelic Experiences on Artistic Expression   0:30:05   Healing Effects of Psychedelic Plant Medicine   0:33:03   Power of Gratitude and the Law of Attraction in Modern Art   0:40:19   Replacing Ego with Gratitude   0:41:47   New Neck Tattoo Design   0:44:45   Exploring Digital Art and Tour Posters   0:47:27   What's Next for Bo?   Quotes:    I got ‘Free' tattoo to represent freedom from the Mormon Church, from toxic relationships, from my old life.    I think one of the hardest things I've had to learn, and I'm learning every day, is replacing ego with gratitude.   I think if we can step into just being grateful for who we are and what we have, it opens us up to that connection. Because ego destroys connection.   It's really easy to look at someone on a corner and be like, fuck, that guy doesn't work. He's slob, he smells. But if that was your kid, what if that was you? It's so easy to judge. But I don't know, having the life I've had has given me a lot of perspectives, and I think it's the perspective that's important, that can help a lot of people. So that's what I'd like to do.   And for some reason I had this love for the homeless, right? And I painted a portrait of a homeless man with a crown on to represent the idea that we're all worthy regardless of our circumstances. And I looked at it and I just bawled my fucking eyes out for like 2 hours. I called my mom. I'm like, mom, I need to tell the stories of the homeless. Five years later, I ended up in a homeless shelter.

Since this attempt was unsuccessful, they approached it from another angle–they would resort to lawyers. We see violence, corruption, war, hunger, poverty, sexual immorality all around us and it oly continues to intensify. In a world that has seem to have lost its moral compass what are we supposed to do as followers of Christ? The answer to that question is that we must stop looking for others to change. We have to be the change we seek. Today on the podcast I have on David Patten. David is a man who has worked in Hollywood in the film industry and seen the inner workings of the film industry. He has since left Hollywood and has started a film company of his own that seeks to make films that tell accurate Mormon history and films that uplift and help people become pure in heart. I had the opportunity to sit down with Cristina Rosetti. I am a huge fan of her work. She has spent her academic career studying Mormon Fundamentalism. Her work is respected by academics and Mormon Fundamentalists alike. Her work is both uncompromising and fair. In our conversation we cover how she became interested in Mormon Fundamentalism, how she gained access to so many fundamentalists, where she thinks Mormon fundamentalism is going, and her experiences working to pass the bill in Utah that would ultimately lead to the decriminalization of plural marriage. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dave-kirkenbower/support

On this episode of the podcast I sit down and have a conversation with Joshua Erickson. I have known Joshua for about a year. He is a Mormon Fundamentalist that takes a very holistic view of Mormonism. Rather than seeing the gospel and restoration in a New Testament & Old Testament sort of way he tends to look at it from the whole. The outgrowth of having this point of view is that Joshua and his family practice Mormonism in conjunction with holding to many ancient Jewish traditions including celebrating the feast days as outlines in the Old Testament. We cover that as well as touch on other subjects such as America being a continuation of the story of the House of Israel that and more next on this episode of the Mormon Renegade Podcast --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dave-kirkenbower/support

In the interview we discuss her role during the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics of informing the world press about the modern practice of plural marriage. We also discuss the friendship that they had with Jerald and Sandra Tanner. Anne helped edit 65 of Ogden's books and worked at Benchmark Books. She talks about the legacy of Curt Bench and how decent of a man he was. IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT UNDERSTANDING, Chapter 5 of Kingdom of GodVolume 3 http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=141 Pages 49-64  If the deceived religionists, who think the Church is the Kingdom of God, were right, and there is not going to be any supernatural and all-powerful world government which is the Kingdom of God, then humanity is utterly without hope. all human life is in danger of extinction. (“What Do You Mean–Kingdom of God?,” Herbert W. Armstrong, p. 26)   No doctrine of the Bible, however important, but has been perverted and abused by men, and has been allied with error and even extravagance. The doctrine of the Kingdom has not escaped the withering touch of depravity. (Theocratic Kingdom, Rev. George Peters, vol. 1, p. 645)   The Four Gospels mention the word “kingdom” 320 times. With all these references Jesus made about the Kingdom of God, did His listeners really understand what He was talking about? Has Christianity preserved for us the nature, the laws or even the definition of what the Kingdom was?   It takes only a few years for word meanings to evolve and a few more years for language itself to change. After 2000 years of biased translators, ignorant transcribers, uninspired monks and priests, and corrupt political leaders, confusion and half-truths remain.

THE EXCOMMUNICATION OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS BELIEVERS, Chapter 12 of The Church and The Priesthood by Ogden Kraut  http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=101 When Jacob gathered his 12 sons together to give them their patriarchal blessings, he prophesied what would happen to their descendants down to the last days. In the blessing for Judah and his tribe, he declared, “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh (the Savior) come; . . . (Gen. 49:10)   To Moses was given the task of giving the Priesthood (sceptre) and its higher laws, but the people did not qualify. So Moses established a church with the Aaronic Priesthood and its lesser laws. The Jews (descendants of Judah) maintained both the Priesthood, its principles, ordinances and church down to the time that the Savior (Shiloh) came to earth.   Jesus was born and raised in this church and soon became a full-fledged Rabbi with all their rights and privileges of teaching the Gospel. Jesus, however, was blessed with such wisdom and understanding that even at age 12 He confounded the wisest of the Pharisees on Priesthood issues.   When He began to teach the laws of the higher Priesthood, he was rejected and “cast out” of the synagogues. This story of Christ’s rejection is told in the King James version of the Bible, but it is told better in some of the other versions.

CONCLUSION, Chapter 15 of The Church and The Gospel by Ogden Kraut  http://www.fundamentallymormon.com/2019/10/conclusion-chapter-15-of-church-and.html?m=1   “CONTEND FOR THE FAITH” Throughout the world there are well over a thousand different Christian churches-most of them claiming to have the true gospel. Yet, there was originally only one Church of Jesus Christ and only one book which was claimed as holy scripture. Such diversity and confusion are the results of private interpretations and personal weaknesses among church leaders and members. Brigham Young recognized this problem: The principles of the gospel are perfect, but are the Apostles who teach it perfect? No, they are not. Now, bringing the two together, what they taught is not for me to say, but it is enough to say this, that through the weaknesses in the lives of the Apostles many were caused to err. Our historians and ministers tell us that the church went into the wilderness, but they were in the wilderness all the time. They had the way marked out to get out of the wilderness and go straight forward into the Kingdom of God, but they took various paths, and the two substantial churches that remain-a remnant from the apostles, that divided, are now called the Holy Catholic Church and the Greek Church. (Des. News, June 9, 1978, front page) On June 8th a letter had been issued to Church general and local Priesthood members with this same information. However, neither announcement contained a copy of a revelation from God instructing that such a change should take place. News of the change was welcomed and hailed around the world! It was apparent that enough pressure had been put on the Church hierarchy to get the desired results.

To read along: http://www.fundamentallymormon.com/2019/10/the-kingdom-of-god-chapter-14-of-church.html?m=1   Definition and Distinction The subject of the Kingdom of God is the grand central theme interwoven throughout the pages of scripture. There are more references in the New Testament to the Kingdom of God than there are to the Church of Christ. It was the main subject in John’s book of Revelations; it was the principle topic of John the Baptist; and the Gospel itself is called the Gospel of the Kingdom. For establishing that Kingdom, Christ was brought to trial and crucified, and it is to rule over that Kingdom that Christ will come again, to reign over all other kingdoms and nations. If the Church were more important than the Kingdom, why didn’t Christ say, “Seek ye first the Church” rather than “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God”? The importance of this subject cannot be ignored nor overlooked. But if we are to seek first this kingdom, we need to know what it is. If we are ignorant of its meaning, it is impossible for us to seek it at all.

http://www.fundamentallymormon.com/2019/09/plural-marriage-chapter-12-of-church.html?m=1 An Eternal Doctrine Before and during the time of the passage of many anti-polygamy laws, the Saints received sermons and revelations encouraging them to continue living this eternal principle. The following examples tell a powerful story: Joseph Smith:  (quoted in the Deseret News) The Prophet did not say that any law passed by Congress is the supreme law of the land. He knew better. He knew Congress would pass laws that would be invalid. What he said was this. . . @When a people or a church have received a Divine command and a law is enacted against it, do they not know whether the law is constitutional or not, seeing that Congress is prohibited by that sacred instrument from passing any law respecting an establishment of religion? And if the Supreme Court, yielding to popular clamor against an unorthodox body rules that the unconstitutional law is constitutional, does that alter the stubborn, patient, invincible fact that the law is in violation of the great guarantee of religious freedom? Any man who says that he really and firmly believes a certain law of God binding on him, and who will not obey it in preference to a conflicting law of man or a decision of a court, has either an unsound mind or a cowardly soul, or is a most contemptible hypocrite. A law has been specially framed against an establishment of their religion. The issue is obedience to God or submission to man; choice between a divine decree about which they have no doubt, and a human enactment that they firmly believe to be unconstitutional and void. It is a matter of conscience. . . . (Des. News, July 6, 1886)

PLURAL MARRIAGE, Chapter 12 of The Church and The Gospel by Ogden Kraut  http://www.fundamentallymormon.com/2019/09/plural-marriage-chapter-12-of-church.html?m=1 An Ancient Doctrine Polygamy, polygyny, or plural marriage certainly did not start with the Mormons. All the people of the Orient, who are descendants of Japheth, the son of Noah, have accepted it as an integral part of their marriage practices. All of the Arabic nations, who are descendants of Abraham, have continued to allow plural marriage because it is a principle of their religion that was practiced and honored by father Abraham. All through the Bible the great and grand prophets, patriarchs and kings believed that God gave that principle as a divine revelation. Hence, it has been acceptable in most nations. This gave the Apostle Orson Pratt reason to say in 1852: Plurality of wives is a doctrine very popular among most of mankind at the present day. It is practiced by the most powerful nations of Asia and Africa, and by numerous nations, inhabiting the Islands of the sea, and by the Aboriginal nations of the great Western Hemisphere. The one wife system is confined principally to a few small nations, inhabiting Europe and to those who are of European origin, inhabiting America. It is estimated by the most able historians of our day that about four-fifths of the population of the globe, believe and practice, according [175] to their respective laws, the doctrine of a Plurality of Wives. If the popularity of a doctrine is in proportion to the numbers who believe in it, then it follows that the Plurality system is four times more popular among the inhabitants of the earth, than the one wife system.

The “Horn” made war with the Saints and overcame them, until the Ancient of Days came; judgment was given to the Saints of the Most High from the Ancient of Days; . . . (TPJS, p. 159) I saw Adam in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman. He called together his children and blessed them with a [159] patriarchal blessing. The Lord appeared in their midst, and he (Adam) blessed them all, and foretold what should befall them to the latest generation. (TPJS, p. 158) The Priesthood was first given to Adam; he obtained the First Presidency, and held the keys of it from generation to generation. He obtained it in the Creation, before the world was formed, as in Genesis 1:26, 27, 28. He had dominion given him over every living creature. He is Michael the Archangel, spoken of in the Scriptures. (TPJS, p. 157) The Priesthood is an everlasting principle, and existed with God from eternity, and will to eternity, without beginning of days or end of years. The keys have to be brought from heaven whenever the Gospel is sent. When they are revealed from heaven, it is by Adam’s authority. (TPJS, p. 157)

The Prophet Joseph Smith once said: There are but a very few beings in the world who understand rightly the character of God (TPJS, p. 343) And again- The things of God are of deep import; and time and experience and careful and ponderous and solemn thoughts can only find them out. (TPJS, p. 137) We never can comprehend the things of God and of heaven, but by revelation. We may spiritualize and express opinions to all eternity; but that is no authority. (TPJS, p. 292) I want to ask this congregation, every man, woman and child, to answer the question in their own hearts, what kind of a being God is? Ask yourselves; turn your thoughts into your hearts, and say if any of you have seen, heard, or communed with Him? This is a question that may occupy your attention for a long time. I again repeat the question-What kind of a being is God? Does any man or woman know? Have any of you seen Him, heard Him, or communed with Him? Here is the question that will, peradventure, from this time henceforth occupy your attention. The [148] scriptures inform us that “This is life eternal that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.” (DHC 6:303)

UNITED ORDER, Chapter 10 of The Church and The Gospel by Ogden Kraut  http://www.fundamentallymormon.com/2019/09/united-order-chapter-10-of-church-and.html?m=1 Come Out of Babylon One of the most noticeable differences between Mormonism and other religions is the close relationship between the spiritual and the temporal. Mormonism is not just another ethereal, mystic, or philosophical religious system-but rather a practical down-to-earth religion that can deal with dollars and cents, butter and beans, parcels of real estate or heavenly kingdoms-because a religion that cannot help people temporally has little power to help them spiritually. Mormonism embraces both practicality and spirituality. In a doctrinal dissertation by Dean D. McBrien, it was noted that in 112 revelations to Joseph Smith, 88 dealt in part or wholly with economic matters. This is not out of harmony with the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, for one verse in every six deals with the money question. Out of the 29 parables of Christ, 16 of them mention the Christian and his money. It is not riches alone, but the lust for riches that overcomes the human will. “The love of money is the root of all evil.” (I Tim. 6:10) So when men idolize riches, they often condescend to evil means to obtain them.

This practice was the doctrine and ordinance of rebaptism. Those who have heard or read about this ordinance have assumed it was done to complete mission records or to re-admit some member back into the Church after excommunication. However, this practice was performed both anciently and in modern times for a wide variety of reasons. For nearly 60 years, in our own dispensation, almost every member of the Church had experienced rebaptism at least once. From the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith to the turn of the century, rebaptism became an integral part of the teachings and faith of the Latter-day Saints.
