Transformed in Christ: St. Paul on the Wages of Sin and the Gift of Life: Scripture Reflection by Priests for Life

The Bible speaks about wages - wages that each one of us earns. However, these wages are not the kind we look forward to. Death - the consequence of our sin and disobedience towards God. But it also speaks of a wonderful gift offered through Jesus Christ our Lord. Will you be content to take the wages of sin? Or will you look to the Christ of Calvary and receive the gift of eternal life that He alone can give? 

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. — Romans 6:23 Sin is a topic that many people tend to avoid. Others make light of it. Las Vegas, for example, is sometimes called “Sin City,” and foods that are tasty but not healthy are often called sinfully delicious or decadent. Sadly, a world that chooses not to reflect seriously on sin does so at its own peril. But what is sin? Sin can be described as having two sides, like a coin. One side of sin involves breaking the commands of God. God's commands are in the Bible—for example, the Ten Commandments and various other passages. The other side of sin involves not living up to God's good purpose for our lives. Jesus summarized our purpose when he said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (see Mark 12:30-31). Acting contrary to God's commands and failing to love God and others are the two sides of sin. Sometimes these are called sins of commission and sins of omission. But is sin really that serious? After all, we are only human, some would say. But the Bible is clear. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death.” But the Bible brings good news as well! While “the wages of sin is death,” “the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”! Lord God, we confess that every day we sin against you in the things we do, and in the things we fail to do. Please forgive us, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

Founded in 2003 after a reporter called the founder about a case of sexual abuse mishandled by a pastor, GRACE, which stands for Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment, the group's leadership became convinced that Protestant institutions were not properly addressing incidents of sexual abuse that would eventually lead to the damage seen in the Catholic Church. In their view, authoritarian cultures of some organizations were particularly susceptible to spiritual abuse and silencing victims.Following in the footsteps of James Lutrell, a prosecutor in the case of the Delphi, Indiana murders of Abby Williams and Libby German, Robert puts a laser focus on victims, getting to the truth and promoting change. God loves us so much that he wants to wipe away the mark of Cain. He wants to heal us from being restless wanderers, and he wants to bring us back into his covenant home. The message explored the profound human longing for love, particularly the perfect love we were meant to experience in Eden. Through the story of Cain and Abel, we examined how sin has affected our ability to love and be loved, leaving us with "clenched fists" that prevent us from truly connecting with others and with God. The message emphasized God's redemptive plan to rescue us from our fallen state and bring us back into His covenant family.

Michael identifies five of the seven deadly sins—gluttony, greed, pride, wrath, and sloth—as fundamental causes behind the growing light pollution epidemic. Gluttony manifests in our excessive and often wasteful use of electric light at night, far beyond what is necessary. Greed drives industries to prioritize profit over sustainable practices, accelerating the adoption of LED lighting and using utility ratepayers and driving up the cost of electricity. Pride fuels the desire to showcase power, wealth, or status through grand, illuminated displays, often without consideration for their consequences. Wrath is reflected in the aggressive rejection of criticism or calls for restraint, with some viewing efforts to reduce light pollution as an attack on the industry. Finally, sloth plays a role in our collective unwillingness to change habits or adopt more thoughtful lighting practices, even when the tools and knowledge to make better choices are readily available. This combination of human tendencies has led to a world where electric light dominates the night, often at great cost to ecosystems, human health, and the beauty of the natural world.
