Born in Southern California, Wayne Rainey started his dirt racing career in 1977, when clinched the AMA Superbike Championship (Kawasaki) in 1983 after a fierce battle with Kenny Roberts and Freddie Spencer. Rainey was introduced to GP racing by Roberts who had only recently retired at the time, and began competing full-time in World GP from the 1984 season (250cc). Rainey then returned to the AMA Superbike and won the series again in 1987 (on a Honda). He then got a regular seat in the GP500 with Team Roberts. Over the next three years Rainey worked at refining his racing technique with amazing level headedness and a great fighting spirit. A "Rainey Pattern," where he would take the lead and stay ahead all the way to the finish, was established after some intense battles with Suzuki's Kevin Schwantz, who had been Rainey's former rival in his AMA years. From 1990 through 1992 he was able to match with Roberts' achievement by winning three consecutive championships in the 500cc class. However, a sudden accident in 1993 with his fourth victory in sight ended his racing career. Thankfully, Rainey's passion for racing did not end there, and he returned as the team manager the following year. This team consisted of Tetsuya Harada, Kenny Roberts Jr. and Norifumi Abe. Wayne was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999.

During the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, there was more than just racing action on the track. On Saturday of race weekend, the “Racing Goes Safer, Driver Safety Seminar” was held in the Long Beach Convention Center. This almost annual (not held during COVID) seminar is hosted by the Stand 21 Safety Foundation. This year, a video featuring Romain Grosjean kicked off the meeting, and then special guest and racing champion, Tommy Kendall, was invited to not only speak about what he went through in his horrific crash at Watkins Glen, but also to MC a very special announcement during the seminar. The announcement was the 2023 class of inductees into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHF). This Hall of Fame is very unique in that it represents all forms of motorsports from cars to bikes to planes to boats. Two of the inductees (doctors Terry Trammel and Stephen Olvey) have been instrumental in racing safety and helping Indy car drivers in particular. I was able to get a short interview here with the president of the MSHF, George Levy. A true gentleman and passionate supporter of all forms of motorsport, the interview left us wanting to visit the MSHF museum and speak with him again. As it turns out, we were able to do that (Part 2 next week). Here's a short interview that will give you an overview of the MSHF and also some of the inductees for the class of 2023. Enjoy! NOTE: In Part 2, we'll have a personal tour of the MSHF and also some nice photos from the fabulous facility. In the meantime, for more information on the MSHF and the 2023 inductees, please visit: www.mshf.com. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason

Hello again Racing Ears,This is a special episode where Rick Knoop talks about his week at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac Michigan. For the week of September 27 of 2021 Rick was at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac Michigan at the Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies for 2020 and 2021. Both events were amazing and it was really fun to catch up with Rick after being a part of both black tie events at the M1 Concourse. Later in the week the M1 Concourse celebrated the Inaugural American Speed Festival. This event showcased historic racing cars from the likes of NASCAR, Can Am, Indy, Grand Touring Prototypes, and a special car called "Sweepstakes". It was great to hear Rick talking about his week with me for the podcast. Rick was also on TV!! We later got to chat about his plans for later this month at the HSR Classic 24 Hour at Daytona Motor Speedway October 27-31 in Daytona Beach Florida. And we also had a chance to discuss his efforts with Duncan Dayton at the 2006 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring in the Lola EX257, which was a former racing car owned by the Dyson Racing Organization of Poughkeepsie New York. Many thanks for Rick Knoop for taking the time to chat with me for this episode. Legendary professional Timer/Scorer and 2021 Motorsports Hall of Fame Inductee Judy Stropus takes host Amanda Busick for a heck of a ride through her career, spanning five decades. Judy honed her skills in the 60s and 70s, and created bulletproof results for racers in nearly every discipline. In the era before computers, she twice kept times and scores for 100 cars in a single race, tracking results entirely by hand. “All I ever wanted in my life is respect”. Judy reminisces about working with Roger Penske when women working in the pits was forbidden, why ovals are”hell!' to score, and why the instant results of timing and scoring are so gratifying. Adrienne Barbeau may have played Judy in ‘CannonballRun', but she would have been equally happy with Ann Margaret -- another iconic car girl!

Dale Ralph Dale Earnhardt Sr.(April 29, 1951 – February 18, 2001), known professionally as Dale Earnhardt, was an American professional stock car racing driver and team owner, best known for his involvement in stock car racing for NASCAR. The third child of racing driver Ralph Earnhardt, he began his career in 1975 in the World 600 as part of the Winston Cup Series. Regarded as one of the most significant NASCAR drivers, Earnhardt won a total of 76 Winston Cup races over the course of his career, including the 1998 Daytona 500. He also earned seven NASCAR Winston Cup championships, tying for the most all-time with Richard Petty. His aggressive driving style earned him the nickname "The Intimidator". In February 2001, Earnhardt died instantly of injuries sustained, after he collided with Ken Schrader and crashed his car in the final lap of the Daytona 500 – an unexpected event that was widely lamented in the racing industry. Earnhardt has been inducted into numerous halls of fame, including the NASCAR Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2010. During the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2001, Earnhardt was involved in a three-car accident on the final lap of the race, in which he collided with Ken Schrader after making small contact with Sterling Marlin and hit the outside wall head-on. Earnhardt and Schrader's cars both slid off the track's asphalt banking into the infield grass just inside of turn 4. Seconds later, his driver Michael Waltrip won the race, with his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. finishing second. Earnhardt's death was officially pronounced at the Halifax Medical Center at 5:16 PM Eastern Standard Time (22:16 UTC). Nearly two hours later, NASCAR president Mike Helton announced Earnhardt's death. Earnhardt was 49 years old at the time of his death. An autopsy conducted on February 19, 2001 concluded that Earnhardt died instantly of blunt force trauma to his head due to the accident. It also reported that Earnhardt sustained a fatal basilar skull fracture. Days later, on February 22, public funeral services were held at the Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt in 1994. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Earnhardt was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. Earnhardt was posthumously named "NASCAR's Most Popular Driver" in 2001. This was the only time he received the award. He was posthumously inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2002, a year after his death. He was inducted in the Oceanside Rotary Club Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame at Daytona Beach in 2004. He was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006. Earnhardt was named first on ESPN's list of "NASCAR's 20 Greatest Drivers" in 2007 in front of Richard Petty. He was inducted in the Inaugural Class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame on May 23, 2010. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2006.
