Devlin DeFrancesco raced for the Andretti Autosport team in the NTT IndyCar Series in 2023 and consistently improved during the season including an incredible start and a dominating run to the front of the field at the Indianapolis road course before fading back due to tire blisters. We caught up with him just off the red carpet at the premier of the “100 Days to Indy” TV show on the CW network at the Long Beach Convention Center just prior to the 2023 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. In this interview he talks about the TV show experience, his off-season preparation regimen, and how he also prepared for this race at Long Beach (as this is his second time here). A unique insight into how an Indy car driver prepares for specific events gives listeners a bit of information that they might not have considered. Enjoy! NOTE: DeFrancesco qualified 20th at Long Beach and moved up a bit to finish 16th. At the end of the season, many changes took place at Andretti Autosport including shrinking the team down to three cars. For 2024, DeFrancesco will be competing with the Forte team in a Lamborghini in the IMSA Endurance Cup. He's also planning on a return to the Indy 500 in May, the 24 hours of Le Mans and some other European racing events. Tickets for Bellator 286 at the Long Beach Convention Center are still available and can be purchased on Ticketmaster. Article Written by JJ Fiddler of The 562:No matter how you look at it, A.J. McKee's Bellator Mixed Martial Arts fight in Long Beach this weekend is the first page of a new chapter in his life. The Long Beach native is coming off of his first professional loss and is fighting in a new weight class for the first time in his career, but McKee said he knows something special is going to happen in the Long Beach Arena on Saturday night when he fights Spike Carlyle.“Having everybody there in my hometown is going to be insane,” McKee told the Long Beach Post's Jackie Rae in an interview for The Word podcast. “The amount of energy that was in (The Forum in Inglewood when I won the featherweight title) was phenomenal so I think it's going to be ten times more electrifying (in Long Beach).”McKee, 27, went to Poly High School where he was an All-League and CIF wrestler. Even though he was already training as an MMA fighter while at Poly, McKee embraced the community and used others' advancement to motivate himself.“It's a city of opportunities.” McKee said. “You can come from nothing and make your life the most extraordinary thing. If you're willing to put in the work it can be done. It's phenomenal to see people you know who struggled to be able to make it out because they visualized a better lifestyle for themselves.”The reason McKee was working on his MMA skills at such a young age is because his father, Antonio McKee, is a former MMA fighter himself. The McKee family worked out of Body Shop Fitness in Lakewood while McKee went 7-1 as an amateur. He also was a member of the CCCAA State Championship wrestling team at Cerritos College.McKee joined Bellator in 2015 and won his debut fight against Marcos Bonilla via rear-naked choke submission in the first round, which really sent a message to the rest of the MMA world that he was ready to take the main stage. While setting the Bellator record with 18 consecutive victories to start his professional career, McKee made a name for himself by winning the Bellator Featherweight World Grand Prix in 2019. The championship fight for the title worth $1 million dollars was a shocker for most fans as McKee landed a high kick early and used a guillotine choke for the first-round win. The rematch with his finals opponent, Patrício Pitbull, was a unanimous decision for Pitbull after an entertaining bout. It was the first loss of McKee's career, and he didn't take it well. Instead of fighting Pitbull again, like he wants to, McKee is moving up from featherweight to 155-pound lightweight. “The transition should be easy for me,” McKee said. “Faster, stronger, bigger and better is my motto for this fight. I have the reach. It's just about making a few minor adjustments. I don't think strength is going to be an issue in this fight.” This fight with Carlyle is also a new chapter because it comes after McKee suffered a “full mental breakdown” following the loss to Pitbull. “I went through a mental depression and I kind of went through it on my own,” McKee said. “I was cooped up in the house, just going to the gym and going home. It was a mental check, and it's a bounce back to use that as motivation.” McKee added that talking about the issue has made it easier to deal with, even though it's not natural for him. “I'm kind of an introvert, but I'm comfortable with it now,” he said. “Even as vulnerable as I am speaking about it, I'm okay sharing that with other people.” Bellator 286 is Saturday at the Long Beach Arena and it will be headlined by Pitbull vs. Adam Borics. The prelim fights start at 7 p.m. and the main card featuring the McKee fight is scheduled for 10 p.m.

Will Power is a former Indianapolis 500 winner and is now a two-time NTT IndyCar Series Champion. This interview was conducted during the weekend of the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. He's won at Long Beach twice and was inducted into the Motorsports Walk of Fame in front of the Long Beach Convention Center. A very successful veteran of the sport driving for Roger Penske, Power is more relaxed this year as he's relying on his team and his experience having raced Indy cars for so many years. He talks about the start of his season, the challenge of having fast teammates, his outlook going into this year's Indy 500 and more. Enjoy! NOTE: Power finished fourth at Long Beach and got his first (and only) win of the season at the Detroit Grand Prix. However, he scored nine podium finishes and three additional Top-Five finishes during the season to earn a spot near the top of the points tally for most of the year. He entered the final race of the year at Laguna Seca earning pole position and breaking a tie with Mario Andretti for the most poles ever! That extra point for pole and his third place podium finish sealed his 2022 championship. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason

During the 2022 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, there was more than just racing action on the track. On Saturday of race weekend, the “Racing Goes Safer, Driver Safety Seminar” was held in the Long Beach Convention Center. This almost annual (not held during COVID) seminar is hosted by the Stand 21 Safety Foundation. This year, a video featuring Romain Grosjean kicked off the meeting, and then special guest and racing champion, Tommy Kendall, was invited to not only speak about what he went through in his horrific crash at Watkins Glen, but also to MC a very special announcement during the seminar. The announcement was the 2023 class of inductees into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHF). This Hall of Fame is very unique in that it represents all forms of motorsports from cars to bikes to planes to boats. Two of the inductees (doctors Terry Trammel and Stephen Olvey) have been instrumental in racing safety and helping Indy car drivers in particular. I was able to get a short interview here with the president of the MSHF, George Levy. A true gentleman and passionate supporter of all forms of motorsport, the interview left us wanting to visit the MSHF museum and speak with him again. As it turns out, we were able to do that (Part 2 next week). Here's a short interview that will give you an overview of the MSHF and also some of the inductees for the class of 2023. Enjoy! NOTE: In Part 2, we'll have a personal tour of the MSHF and also some nice photos from the fabulous facility. In the meantime, for more information on the MSHF and the 2023 inductees, please visit: www.mshf.com. By Larry Mason Copyright © 2022 Larry Mason

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by AABP Vice President and Preconference Seminar Chair Dr. Michael Capel to discuss the preconference seminars that will be offered at the upcoming AABP Annual Conference in Long Beach, Calif. The seminars are held Sunday through Wednesday Sept. 18-21, 2022 prior to the conference Sept. 22-24. We discuss how the seminars we took during our careers tremendously impacted our practice lives, both in continuing education content teaching us skills to advance our practice, as well as networking and meeting experts and colleagues in the field. Preconference seminars can be added to a regular conference registration, or you can sign up for a seminar registration to take a seminar and then send another member in your practice to the conference sessions. Descriptions of the preconference seminars can be found at this link. A total of 14 preconference seminars are available and each will be approved for 8 hours per day of continuing education. Nine of the seminars are new or reworked versions of previous seminars so there should be something of interest to all beef and dairy veterinarians. Register for the conference and seminars on this page. Preconference seminars with an inadequate number of participants are subject to cancellation up until August 12, so enroll today! Seminars will either be held in the Long Beach Convention Center of the Hyatt headquarters hotel. Reserve your room in the AABP hotel block at this link.
