If you get fixated on the tactical parts... It's a false sense that you're doing something great, but you'll hit a ceiling quickly in terms of productivity.”“We only want process when it accelerates us… Once we've proven that we know how to do it manually by keeping smart and talented people in the loop and making good situational decisions is our secret sauce to scale with a lot less pain.”“If something is important to us, the company, or the management team and we aren't measuring and watching it, other people aren't going to value it either. I've come to adopt a mix of top-down and bottom-up leadership where we can't have all-of-one or all-of-the-other, or everything falls apart.”Get Connected:Jason LaFollette on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/jasonlafolletteIan Faison on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/ianfaisonResources:Learn more about Yext: www.yext.comHungry for more tech talk? Host: Brenda Zane (www.brendazane.com)Guest: Alison LaFollette (https://lifeelevatedpsychological.com)For many parents, having their teen or young adult child undergo psychological evaluation can feel incredibly stressful. They worry that even talking to their son or daughter about the process can make it seem like they think their child is broken, or maybe even that they're crazy. When my son entered wilderness therapy, I'd never even heard of psychological evaluations - so I never knew it could have been a tool to provide insight into his challenges and strengths. And for parents taking a “wait-and-see” approach to addressing their child's behavior, these evaluations can be beneficial to get a thorough and professional assessment of your child's psychological strengths, weaknesses, and specific needs. This information can be critical and directive when you're making treatment decisions. My guest today is Dr. Alison LaFollette, a psychologist based in Salt Lake City with over a decade of experience conducting psychological and neuropsychological assessments. The last seven years of her career have involved working with young people in residential treatment programs, therapeutic boarding schools, and wilderness therapy programs. Given her extensive education and experience, she has a lot to share with us about how evaluations can benefit families with young people who struggle with substances and mental health. In this episode, Alison and I discuss:Myths and misperceptions about psychological assessmentWho's qualified to conduct these assessments, and who isn't Ideas for approaching your child about doing an evaluationHow test results can be used to direct treatment optionsLearn about The Stream, our private online community for moms, at www.thestreamcommunity.comWe now have a new community for dads parenting a child who struggles with substance use and mental health; The Woods: members.thewoodscommunity.orgFind us on Instagram: @the.stream.communityDownload my free e-book, HINDSIGHT: Three Things I Wish I Knew When My Son Was Misusing Drugs: www.brendazane.com/hindsightJoin my email list: www.brendazane.com/email

David speaks on the growth and evolution of the appliance space over the past two decades. He explains how independent businesses continue to thrive alongside big box stores. Because margins are always small when it comes to appliances, the true value proposition that sets one store apart from another is the level of knowledge of their salespeople. In the latter half of the conversation, David offers his thoughts on succeeding as a business owner by injecting a healthy dose of humanity into every interaction and solution-oriented thinking into every decision one makes.Topics Discussed:[12:43] David's career from Monarch onwards[14:00] Who runs the appliance world today[18:02] How consumers shop for appliances[24:47] David's newest venture[29:56] Learning from his experience at Monarch and the implosion of Sears[38:53] Becoming “dumb enough to try something and smart enough to pull it off”[47:11] Treating people right[51:54] What David is most excited for[57:45] Embracing your individual sovereigntyConnect with Build Magazine:Website - https://www.buildmagazine.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/buildmags/?hl=enFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/BuildMags/Key Quotes by David:If you're looking from a unit sales standpoint, people always turn to the big box stores. But independents, collectively, are just the biggest resource for appliances. The general consumer is really savvy when it comes to appliances because they can look up everything on the web.The road is littered with good companies that have bought great companies and destroyed them. A lot of it is simply due to infrastructure or pulling you into their way of doing business. You've got to be dumb enough to try something and smart enough to pull it off.

Today on the show I have Anne LaFollette! After years working in the corporate work and an unexpected layoff, Anne turned to the art supplies that had been collecting dust in her basement. She is now a surface pattern designer and teacher with a thriving business. AND if you're wondering just what surface pattern design is - we are going to get into it in all the details - because it turns out, it's a really big thing! Let's dive in.

Altasciences' important role in the drug development process comes with the significant responsibility of ensuring the welfare of our research animals, a responsibility that we take extremely seriously. Altasciences is committed to doing everything possible to minimize the number of animals used and ensure that the animals used are treated with care, dignity, and the utmost respect. Dr. Christina Cruzen, Attending Veterinarian and Chief Animal Welfare Officer, had the opportunity to interview Dr. Megan R. LaFollette, Program Manager at The North American 3Rs of Animals in Research Collaborative (NA3RsC), to discuss the importance of animal welfare, the 3Rs, how the role of animal research is changing, rat tickling as a refinement technique, and much more.
Anne LaFollete was 55 when she found herself without a job for the first time in over 2 decades. She had a few choices: She could retire early She could keep searching for another job OR she could reinvent herself. Anne pulled out a box of forgotten art supplies, signed up for an online art class, discovered Surface Design, fell in love with it (she was a natural!), and quickly realized she wanted to spread her joy by teaching it to others. That was 5 years ago. In 2020, Anne made $427,000 from her online art course, hitting her first 6-figure launch in May and going on to have an even bigger launch in October. And she’s just getting started. We couldn’t be prouder to have Anne as our friend and client (she’s one of our favorite human beings!). Join us on today’s podcast episode to know all about Anne’s journey as an online entrepreneur, learn why it’s never too late to start your dream business and discover the secret to her success (hint: it’s all about the data!). Show Transcript - Struck Podcast EP8 with Hector Del Aguila, FAA DER And as part of that education, your focus, and at the time you weren't, were you thinking about being, we're working in the aircraft industry or were you just electromagnetics and you just like the math? I always have a desire to, to work in our space and, and I think we're on an aircraft. And, for personal reasons because of, my mother died on the, blank crush, when I was, seven or eight years old and, and soil was thought about, when I became, when I was studying engineering. That's something that the, that it peaked my interest. And I decided to move, to do research on things to do, to protect, Not on the aircraft, but then like electrical and electronic systems in general and your stuff, like you're originally from Korea. Yeah. I was wondering through, yeah, you say it better than I do. It's such an awesome, yeah. I came here, you know, in my early twenties and yeah. And, at the study and then that's it. So after, after you had your, you guys' degree in Texas, you went, where was your next step? Where did you go? Oh, yeah. Well, after I got the degree at Texas, while I was working on my graduate, degree, I taught in the university. I thought about the metrics and, and I engineered laboratories about that point a couple of years. Well, I'll say a graduate assistant. And they, after that, I moved to Albuquerque to a, an organization called LaFollette. That's the air force operational test and evaluation center, as an RF engineer. Not familiar with that place. What did they do? What do they call that place at that organization? in New Mexico, they do operational testing of, of systems, and, aerospace systems and these stairs, in, in that particular time, it was some satellites and telecommunication systems is what I thought. And ? No. Well, what kind of airplanes were you working on at the time? Well, I thought at that time he was, at that time was not airplanes at the time. It was mostly, telecommunication systems. gotcha. Satellites, satellite, things like that. For example, there was a, there was a system called middle star. I'll try service. So after about three years of being on the operational world, I realized that that's not really what my main interest was. So, because I wanted to do some reasons to do research, and after three years, I moved from to. so the air force research laboratory worked there for about 20 years doing research, again, looking at protection of electrical systems, things like that from, from the electromagnetic standpoint. So, as, as, I mean, doing research over a 20 year span has gotta be pretty incredible to see. A lot of the technology change, just I'm sure the, the resources you had, you know, in just the systems and you, and you could test and I'll just like the different, you know, the technology and, and software I'm sure use it. How did, how did research change for you over such a long period of time? Well, it, it was, it was very nice because we were able to,

Greg La Follette is known in the wine world as a founding father of California Pinot Noir. A former seminarian and biochemist with degrees in Plant Biology and Chemistry, he was an early AIDS researcher at the University of California San Francisco before earning his masters degree in Food Science and Technology at the University of California Davis. Greg has worked for BV, started La Crema and Hartford Court for Jackson Family Wine (Kendall-Jackson), started Sonoma Pinot cult brand Flowers and his own brands LaFollette (which he sold) and now Alquimista. Greg has consulted all over the world – in northern California, Oregon, Europe, South America, and Australia. He is widely considered an expert on Pinot Noir. Here are a few things we chatted about: Greg's early history, including his time with André Tchelistcheff, the father of American Viticulture (also mentioned in Ep 275: http://winefornormalpeople.libsyn.com/webpage/category/ep-275-lane-tanner-the-pinot-czarina-of-santa-barbara-county-california) The allure of Pinot Noir and the various styles Greg has made over the years -- from big and brawny at Flowers to elegant and earthy at Alquimista. Greg talks about winegrowing and the challenges of Pinot Noir (and why Chardonnay is important to grow as a sanity check!) The influence Burgundy has had on Greg's wine over the years The fascinating chronicles of working at La Crema, starting Flowers for someone else, starting and selling Tandem (now La Follette) and then departing to the best stop: Alquimista Cellars! We discuss Patrick Dillon, Greg's partner in Alquimista (and a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, writer, editor), and how their styles combine to make a style of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay you won't find elsewhere in California. Alquimista's wines are spectacular. Check them out! __________________________________________ Thanks to YOU! Notes: HOT ROD HOUND was collected from SANDY COPLEN SMITH who got it from her roommate, Susan Adams who got it from her father in Coal City, West Virginia. I have heard the same tale several other times but the subject was a cat who was frozen in a refrigerator and revived with gasoline. This is a favorite of my grandson whose mother’s father, Red Harrison of LaFollette, Tennessee, tells the tale.
In 1935 LaFollette, Tennessee, like most other American towns, was in the grips of the Great Depression. Money was tight and the banks were calling in loans that couldn't be paid. One of those loans was on a restaurant in town owned by an Italian immigrant, and what this man chose to do in response to losing his business is the subject of this week's episode of Stories. You can listen to the Stories podcast at RadioPublic, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify or on any number of podcast apps. Thanks for listening, folks.
Welcome to the October episode of 3-Minute 3Rs, brought to you by Lab Animal (www.nature.com/laban, the NC3Rs (www.nc3rs.org.uk) & the North American 3Rs Collaborative (www.na3rsc.org) Here are the papers behind the pod: 1. Generation of Tumor-Reactive T Cells by Co-culture of Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes and Tumor Organoids. https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(18)30903-6 2. Mymou: A low-cost, wireless touchscreen system for automated training of nonhuman primates. https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758%2Fs13428-018-1109-5 3. Practical rat tickling: Determining an efficient and effective dosage of heterospecific play. https://www.appliedanimalbehaviour.com/article/S0168-1591(18)30255-7/fulltext Transcript: [LA] Organoids are three-dimensional tissue cultures that resemble more complicated structures. They're promising alternatives to animal models for studying diseases and for testing potential treatments. But tissues grown in a dish lack an immune system. That's a critical component for predicting how something will function in a living organism. To add some immunity to their organoids, Emile Voest from the Netherlands Cancer Institute and his colleagues recently developed a new co-culturing platform. In their latest work, published in the journal Cell in September, they culture epithelial organoids, derived from human cancer patients, along with blood from those same patients. The co-culturing platform allowed the researchers to study how T-cells from the patients' immune systems interacted with the organoids, attacking cancerous cells while ignoring healthy ones. It's a personal approach for understanding immunotherapy, no animals required. [NA3RsC] We all strive to provide laboratory animals with positive welfare, but it's difficult to actually know how animals feel. But with rats, we have a unique window into their emotional lives through their vocalizations. Rats make positive ultrasonic vocalizations when they play and when they're tickled. What is tickling? It mimics rat rough and tumble play, which rats will eagerly seek out. But how much time does this technique take? A recent publication by LaFollette et al, gives us that answer. Researchers tickled rats for a frequency of 1, 3, or 5 days and for a duration of 15, 30, or 60 seconds. They found that 3-days of tickling was the most efficient and effective. These rats produced more positive vocalizations before and during tickling, played more, and were less inactive in their home cage before tickling. However the duration of tickling didn't matter. This suggests that 3 short sessions of tickling can go a long way to make rats happier to interact with humans and to improve rat welfare. [NC3Rs] Many neuroscientific studies involve training nonhuman primates to perform cognitive tasks. But traditional training methods raise some key concerns. These include the need to separate animals from their home environment, causing them stress that affects both their welfare and their performance. Enter Mymou, a refined training system developed by James Butler and Steve Kennerley at University College London and described in a recent Behavior Research Methods paper. Mymou, named after the Greek word for "monkey" is a wireless touchscreen system that is installed in the home environment. It runs continuously, so monkeys can train whenever they want in familiar surroundings. Built in facial recognition allows different tasks to be assigned to different individuals while real-time data analysis means tasks can be adapted as training progresses. The set-up uses commercially available components and costs under £400, or around 500 USD. If that wasn't enough, Mymou is also fully open source, making it even easier to try out in any lab. Philosophy professor Hugh LaFollette says that he was raised in a gun culture. Later, he was struck by the very different policy responses to the killing of children in Dunblane, Scotland and Newtown, Connecticut. He says “my dis-ease at having no settled view of the topic nagged at me for several years before I decided that agnosticism on this topic was neither intellectually tenable nor morally responsible. I was impelled to examine the arguments and the evidence to reach a fair and informed view.” In his book “In Defense of Gun Control” (from Oxford University Press) LaFollette says that “the public debate about the private ownership of guns is contentious, often nasty, and rarely insightful” and grotesquely oversimplified. In the book he reviews the various philosophical perspectives on gun control; explains why Americans have a culture of guns not found elsewhere in the developed world; discusses armchair arguments on both sides; and examines empirical evidence relating to guns and gun control.
Jesse Nelson and Dennis Semrau talk with Scott Swanson of Madison LaFollette and Madison East's Jeremy Thornton about coaching at their alma maters.
