Neil Smith, like many kids, got his love of motorsport from his father. His passion for the sport was fueled by weekends spectating at English race tracks and watching the Formula 1 on the TV. But it was sports car racing that really caught his imagination, initially with Group C and later, after a move to the USA, with IMSA. Trips to the Le Mans 24 Hours added to the experience, and in the 2000s his hobby of writing a blog about racing turned into actual reporting on the American Le Mans Series and Grand Am for the predecessor of SportsCar365.com. After building a career in the tech industry, Neil returned to writing in 2018, beginning work on his debut book titled On The Prowl: The Definitive History of the Walkinshaw Jaguar Sports Car Team uncovering the fascinating stories, anecdotes, and intrigue from those who were there. His book is published by our friends at David Bull Publishing.

On the morning of March 10, 1997, Leah Rowlands, a 41-year-old mother of two, worked at the Amoco gas station just off Interstate 80 in Cozad, Nebraska. Before the afternoon arrived, Leah was found shot to death behind the counter. When police reviewed the Amoco's surveillance footage, they saw that just after 10:30am, a white, barefoot man robbed Leah. After she gave him $150, he ordered her to lie down behind the counter. He then pulled out a gun, leaned over the counter, and shot her three times. After shooting Leah, the killer went back to his car and drove away, never to be seen again. It's been nearly 27 years since Leah was killed, and investigators are still searching for the person responsible… On March 10, 1997, Leah Rowlands was working at the Amoco gas station off Interstate 80 in Cozad, Nebraska. Just after 10:30am, a white male with short dark hair, in his late 20s to mid 30s, standing at around 6ft to 6ft, 3in tall, robbed Leah, then shot her three times with a 9 mm. One minute later, he drove off in a red, two door Grand Am car, possibly an S-E model from 1992 to 1995.  If you have any information in this case, please call the Cozad Police at (308) 784-2366.  Editor: Shannon Keirce Research/Writing: Haley Gray and Anna Luria SUBMIT A CASE HERE: Cases@DetectivePerspectivePod.com SOCIAL Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/detperspective/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/detperspective FIND DERRICK HERE Twitter: https://twitter.com/DerrickL Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/DerrickLevasseur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DerrickVLevasseur CRIME WEEKLY AND COFFEE Criminal Coffee Company: https://www.CriminalCoffeeCo.com Crime Weekly:  https://crimeweeklypodcast.com/shop ADS: 1. AI seems to be on everybody's mind, but what is AI really? Mike's got some new drops brewing thanks to his recent It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia binge. Govier thinks he fixed and improved Steve's audio. Was he right or is he an idiot? We leave it to you to determine if you hear a difference in his audio this week. There was a Specialist who acted as a drill sergeant who filled Steve and all the guys he served next to with a bunch of false inspiration. Nobody seems to remember the movie War Games and Joshua. Wanna know what Whopper Streakers are? We also have the story of Steve's first time taking hallucinogens. More trips down memory lane take the fellas to Panama City Beach 2001 where there was a poop covered blanket and gibberish talk from blacked out neurons. Have you ever played full functioning video game consoles while on a road trip driving? Do you know the difference between the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Grand Am? Luke finally figured out who Dan Le Batard is after hearing a quality interview with one of the writers from The Bear. Have you seen The Bear? Don't miss Steve's latest Werner Herzog impersonation! Govier and Steve rediscover a classic YouTube video to share with Luke featuring the legends of voice overs and the world of movie trailers. It's a doozy! We've got emails! Emailer Joe checks in with some follow-up thoughts related to emailer Dave's epic airline's logistics email from last week. This one's about the mechanics this time. Mr. Pink emails in about AI and which impending disaster will do us in first: climate change or AI? Alex the African Grey Parrot is smarter than all of us. Listen and learn. Whatever we do here, the Always Sunny clip about being blasted in the ass by Republicans or Democrats says it all about the limited options available to most Americans when it comes to government representation. Luke really has a problem with ticking clocks. Govier swallowed a quarter in 2001 while playing quarter bounce. He isn't quite sure where or when it finally came out of him. Jimmy Fallon gets on Steve and Luke's nerves very quickly when it comes to celebrity impressions. The weather is a source of frustration in Michigan for Luke and Govier today, which leads to complaints about how awful Lightning Crashes by Live was and still is. We love you all! We are very pleased with our little world that we have formed together thanks to this show. This talk show has little substance to it without you listening and emailing. We close the show with I Love You Like A Brother by Alex Lahey. If any of our nonsense provokes your thoughts, please share them with us at isitsafepod@gmail.com

John is a life long car guy. All of his favorite toys had wheels. Growing up on the north side of Chicago, two of his favorite early memories includes drives down Lake Shore Dr. in an MGA with the top down, (which really started his love of British Sports Cars) and when the orange pedal car was brought downstairs for a sidewalk drive. That was officially his first car. His second was a fairly ratty, but still loved red 1960 TR3. There were a variety of cars in the early days, foreign and domestic. A 1969 Road Runner, a 1973 Grand Am with a four speed, and a 1972 MGB were among a few early cars. Later came a long string of practical and sporty BMW 3 and 5 Series cars. Somewhere in the late 80 and early nineties was a 944 Turbo. In 1996 John bought a 1963 Austin Healey BJ7 3000. He met his long-time friend Mark Baker when Sport and Specialty did some much-needed maintenance on the car. Re-bitten by the British Car bug, and deciding it was “now or never” John found a 1960 Bugeye race car and brought it back to racing duty. Next, he joined North Suburban Sports Car Club and went to his first driving school in 1998, and received his Novice Competition License. He has held a competition and instructors license since 1998. He also holds a Chief and Operating Steward's license from Midwestern Council and serves as the Vintage / Historic Racing Chair and Vintage Motorsport Council delegate. He campaigns his lovely yellow 1969 Alfa Romeo GTV and BMW 2002 with MCSCC and the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association (VSCDA) in general vintage races and the B Sedan Trans Am series. He also runs his track and street ready1983 Caterham Super Seven when the occasion arises. After a long and successful career in sales and marketing and general management, John knew it was time to do something he truly loved. After the passing of his friend Mark, the business that he knew so well through his friendship with Mark was in danger of shutting down. The business had a talented and dedicated crew and good business basics in place, so after helping the family operate the business in 2012, he began discussing some purchase options to keep the business alive and growing. At the end of 2012, he purchased the business and hasn't looked back. He couldn't be happier, he works with a talented crew, gets to go racing when he can, and has successfully turned his passion into his livelihood! What could be better?

In 2004, Jan started in handful of F3000 races until one of the team partners pulled out and Jan moved back to the German Formula 3 series. Despite missing the first six races of the season, Heylen stormed to six wins and eight podium finishes to finish third in the Championship. This result lead to a seat in the 2005 World Series of Renault touring car championship, which he won. In addition, Jan drove for the winning team in the 24 Hours of Zolder behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Corvette.   It was during the 2005 season that he began thinking of racing in the United States. Careful planning and discussions with people in the sport allowed Jan to compete in the Champ Car World Series in 2006, driving for Dale Coyne's little team. To this day, Jan will tell you that the most impressive car he has ever driven is a Champ Car, with its 850 horsepower engine and over the top aerodynamics. With Cristiano daMatta as his team mate, Heylen quickly learned how to deal with the powerful beasts and eventually scored the best finish the Coyne team had ever enjoyed up to that time, a fifth place at the Cleveland Grand Prix, out qualifying his much more experienced team mate at half the races the team ran in. The two men became great friends and to this day, Jan regards daMatta as one of the nicest guys in the sport.   Following a last minute deal with Eric Bachelart's Conquest Racing team for 2007, Jan found himself back in a Champ Car, this time driving a brand new Panoz DP-01. Taking over the car three races into the season, Heylen, working with the engineers and crew men of Conquest Racing, developed their car from a car that was only capable of running around in fifteenth place to one capable of challenging for wins on multiple kinds of tracks, with a second place finish at the Grand Prix of Holland in Assen being the best finish of the season and the best finish ever for Conquest Racing.   From 2011 on, Jan has been racing in the Grand Am - now IMSA Series piloting various Porsche race cars.

A new father, Ellis details what life has been like with minimal sleep while working his 9-5 job AND racing. Also a third-generation driver, Ellis explains how his late grandfather and father started racing, how Ryan got involved and his fond memories of the early days of go-karting. After getting selected to appear on a Discovery Channel show in the Jetta-TDI Cup Series, Ellis seemed to be on the ride, but his confidence was fluctuating. He explains why, and details his Grand-Am experiences and how Jimmy Means gave him a start in NASCAR, something he admittedly wasn't seeking out. From Obaika Racing to BK Racing and everywhere in between, Ellis has been through the ringer. He tells the good, bad and ugly stories of his time working for countless car owners and why he made it a point to stay out of the way in his first ever Cup start, which also happened to be his hero Jeff Gordon's penultimate one. The journey to where he is now has made Ellis appreciate the sport more, and he explains why. Plus, why being an Asian-American never ended up helping him in the NASCAR Diversity program, his thoughts on CBD sponsorships, his love of hockey, why he decided to get a college degree and how it's helped him in the real world and in racing, how his Kansas Cup start with Rick Ware Racing came about, the awesome partnerships he has on the BJ McLeod Motorsports Xfinity car this weekend at Martinsville and more. Davey also beings his girlfriend Robin, noted Washington Capitals super fan, on to go head-to-head with Ellis answering Caps trivia questions. Who won and is the bigger fan? You'll have to find out. Davey also touches on Kyle Larson's ninth victory of the season and third in a row, Ty Gibbs' memorable day, previews the penultimate race of the season at Martinsville and Papa Segal pays homage to "The Mayor" Jeff Burton.

One unseasonably cool (as opposed to freezing) late winter morning on March 10, 1997, at a small  travel stop gas station and convenience store right off Interstate 80 in Cozad, a tiny farming community in the heart of Nebraska, a late model Pontiac Grand Am pulled into the parking lot and up to the pumps.  Inside the store, 41 year-old Leah Rowlands was behind the counter on her very first day in her new role as manager – her hard work and happy attitude had earned her that position after just a few months.  The divorced mother of two was finally getting her life back in order after a tough breakup with a new town, a new boyfriend and a future that appeared nothing but bright.  Back at the gas pumps, a large man wearing a hoodie under a leather jacket, sweat pants rolled up to his knees and wearing no shoes got out of the Pontiac, filled the tank and headed into the store.  Once inside he grabbed a canned soft drink out of the cooler, opened it and started drinking from it while he waited for a mother and her young son to complete their transaction at the counter and leave.  He then went up to Leah at the counter, told her to empty the cash register and get down on the floor.  Once she was face down on the floor, he calmly pulled a 9mm semiautomatic handgun from his right pocket, reached over the counter and calmly shot Leah Rowlands to death.  After just three minutes after walking into the store, the killer nonchalantly walked out, carrying his soda, a pack of cigarettes and $150 in cash.  He got back into the Grand Am and drove off.  Never to be seen again.  Right up to this moment, no one knows who the big man in the hoodie is.  There has never been an arrest.  And here's the truly weird and truly awful – and awfully amazing – thing about all of this:  The convenience store was completely wired with surveillance cameras.  The entire event was caught on videotape, from several angles.  The killer stared straight into one of the cameras as he waited for the store to clear out.  His unshielded face – while mildly blurry – is clearly visible on the footage from behind the counter, where the murder is recorded in horrifying detail.  And no one – no one – has ever identified him.  A California license plate on the rear of the Grand Am is illegible.  And even though authorities have searched the for that car, it's never been found.  The calmness of the killer's demeanor – his seeming complete lack of concern that his face, his body features, his clothing were being recorded – makes the entire episode not just tragic – but haunting…to Leah's family and loved ones and especially to law enforcement.  Every available agency, from local police to state authorities to the FBI, continues to work on this case – but until that one person who recognizes her killer comes forward, the case is at a standstill.  Take a chilling ride with Melissa back to that Nebraska morning 24 years ago and imagine that you or someone you know can be the one link to bring justice to Leah Rowlands.  ALSO - this week Melissa has an update on the Will Cierzan case - a new development that could finally bring justice to Will's family.

Just in time for the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event at GingerMan, Chief Instructor Eric Meyer was kind enough to join us and discuss his past and current association with racing and instructing, as well as the genealogy and philosophy that has led to the current NASA Great Lakes HPDE program curriculum.  It is by far the best of the HPDE instruction we have attended across the country and we think highly enough of it that we regularly attend their HPDE events that are sometimes well over a 10 hour drive each way from us.  Eric also is another great counterexample of the false age-old adage about "those who can do, and those who can't teach" as he has won a ton of racing trophies in Grand Am, World Challenge, and Touring cars, among others.  Our Dominating with Dawson segment goes over the practice of left foot braking, its potential advantages, and how to try to begin to incorporate it into your driving repertoire. We hope you enjoy the episode and we would love to see you at the upcoming NASA Great Lakes event in GingerMan! Best regards, Bill, Vicki, Jennifer, and Alan Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training podcast and team members in the GHiT Immature Endurance Racing Team   Highlights from the episode include: 1)  How he originally started racing at a track and how quickly and deeply the hook was set. 2)  Some of the issues that he encountered when first entering the sport and how they shaped his interest in helping others 3)  Where he sees opportunities to continue to improve our sport and how he can give back to the racing community. 4)  How NASA Great Lakes history has led to their focus on the educational path has led to the current HPDE structure.  It is a great balance of driving on the track with the classroom and download education. 5)  Eric turns the table on Bill to answer Bill's own question.  It was tremendously fun and allowed Bill to brag about the NASA Great Lakes HPDE. 6)  A discussion on the priorities of teaching driving skills and situational awareness as foundational aspects of the NASA Great Lakes HPDE. 7)  We believe that we may have uncovered Eric is secretly competing in sewing.  We may be wrong. 8)  Eric also goes into some of the philosophy of what his team is looking for to progress through the levels as well as some of the criteria in transitioning from level one to level two, as an example. 9)  We discuss several of the drills that you will do within the various HPDE levels, some of which we have lovingly stolen and use on our track day practice sessions. 10)  We even go into some of the educational techniques former podcast guest John Santiago uses in the HPDE 1 classroom and track sessions.  Vicki and Jen will be getting the full experience next weekend.  Bill is jealous and will attend as many of their classroom sessions as his HPDE schedule permits. 11)  How has the COVID related challenges and rules impacted the event and the HPDE sessions specifically, especially the traditional right seat style in car coaching and the various group classroom sessions.  It sounds like things may be even better than the prior structure. 12)  One of the surprises we may see at GingerMan may have been revealed. 13)  Eric says that we need to add Mosport to the track bucket list and Bill is already pondering how to possibly get to the Chin event at Barber in November. 14)  Tips and tricks to the upcoming GingerMan event, both on track and off.  Jen is thrilled with the runoff areas GingerMan affords to assist with learning with less potential detrimental impact. 15)  We have an informal agreement to meet at the local microbrewery.  Now we just need to have time and energy. 16)  A Pinto makes a podcast appearance again, much to Vicki and Jen's pleasure. 17)  We aren't absolutely sure if Eric really liked our Fast and Furious questions but he really faked it well if he didn't. 18)  Eric has a weakness, and apparently it is Mazda rotary engines. 19)  If you are ever at a bar and need to know how many kegs you can fit into a 1964 Oldsmobile Cutlass, this is the podcast for you! 20)  Bill forgets to thank Eric for an earlier long conversation they had related to Bill's goal of becoming a qualified instructor as soon as possible.

IMSA Was Born Fifty years ago, a new sanctioning body emerged at a pivotal moment in motorsports history. Racing was on the upswing and new tracks were being built all across the U.S. Imported cars from Europe and Japan were flooding the market, designers were pushing limits and drivers were looking for an opportunity to race for more than just a trophy. Into this void stepped John Bishop with a fledgling organization called IMSA that offered competitive, professional racing in a friendly atmosphere and carried a new message: Racing with a Difference. The Inside Story Now Told In this behind the scenes book, Mitch Bishop and Mark Raffauf tell the inside story of how IMSA became a global powerhouse in just a few short years. It covers John Bishops early life, his years at the SCCA and tells the story of how IMSA grew from humble beginnings in 1969 into the Camel GT Series, a circuit that became the most popular form of professional sports car racing in the world. Interviews with many of the top drivers, team owners, car builders and others from the era helped shape this book, which also includes hundreds of never-before-published photos. The first twenty years of IMSAs history deliver fascinating stories of vision, innovation, common sense leadership and overcoming personal tragedy. Bishop and IMSA left an enormous imprint on the racing world and changed thousands of lives. This book is a must-read, for those interested in how it all happened and in learning critical management lessons still applicable in todays motor racing world. This beautiful hardcover book can be found at bookstores and Amazon http://bit.ly/IMSABook Mitch Bishop  Mitch Bishop is the son of IMSA founder John Bishop. Over the last 40+ years, Mitch has built a successful career as a marketing, sales and software engineering leader in the Silicon Valley. He is an active racer and sits on the leadership council for the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY. Mark Raffauf  Mark Raffauf has spent most of his adult life as part of the IMSA family. Dating back to his teens in the 1970's where he became an integral part of the organization during its GT glory days, he went on to become the key person behind IMSA’s GTP era before shifting his attention to Grand-Am, and today, the relationship continues with his leadership role in the new IMSA championship

Lifes Issues with Lloyd Rosen with guest Sandra Champlain Plagued by a lifelong fear of death and dying, Sandra Champlain began a passionate search for answers to some of life's most perplexing questions. She attended a workshop with international best-selling author and angelic communicator, Doreen Virtue, PhD. and discovered that she had a gift to communicate with beings who had passed on. After this breakthrough, Sandra realized deeply in her heart that she no longer needed to fear death. However, having been a ‘normal' person all her life, she didn't want to be labeled a "psychic lunatic"by her friends and family! So she told no one about her new skills and insights, and instead decided to search for proof of life after death before going public. Through a series of life-changing events and exhaustive research, Sandra now feels that she can finally share this truth with the world: Our souls really do survive death. Since that time, Sandra has courageously shared her journey with others. She has gathered the evidence, stories and experiences that can convince anyone, including a skeptic like herself, that ‘we don't die.' Her goal is to help people know within themselves that their own souls are eternal and that their deceased loved ones are in heaven, loving them. Sandra is a highly respected speaker, author and entrepreneur committed to making a difference in the lives of others.
