Today we're joined by Nicholas Eames, author of cult favorite KINGS OF THE WYLD to discuss his publishing experience in a wide-ranging interview. Eames is a debut success story, and we hope you find his conversation as funny, uplifting, and engaging as we did (a welcome change after last week's grim deconstruction!) Other topics addressed: -- the creative process of working with a trad editor-- life as a "slow" writer-- how doing other creative projects can keep the writing passion going (this one was a listener question!)-- and a few bonus questions from our discord, with some hints from Nick about the next and future book.
The boys discuss the exciting follow-up to Nicholas Eames' Kings of Wyld. Immediately the debate is on, which of the two books do the lads enjoy more? They discuss characters arcs, the author's worrying increase in willingness to kill characters, evil bunny girls, Duncan's hatred of a fictional child and Geordie relating too much to falling for goth girls who just ain't good for you.
(Audio fixed) What an episode! Not only do the fellas enjoy an amazing fantasy novel, they also got a chance to land their first interview with an author. Nicholas Eames joins them to discuss his novels, his reading list, and the power of rock 'n roll, baby. Geordie and Duncan discuss this novel's comedy, pathos, fist-pumping action and unnecessarily emotionally stirring ettins.
My guest this week is epic fantasy author Nicholas Eames! Nick is known for his breakout King of the Wyld and its sequel, the Bloody Rose. We chat about his forthcoming third book and the themes of the series, as well as our habits as writers—getting bogged down in details, leaning into the fantastical, and the hooks that bring the reader along for the ride. We also discuss eating out, our mutual love of video games, and music and the celebrity of music. Enjoy my conversation with Nicholas Eames! You can find Nicholas on Twitter or his website.Find Brian McClellan at his website, on Twitter and Instagram, or find his books on Amazon, direct from his bookstore, or wherever books are sold!Don't forget to support the show on Patreon, or pick up some swag on Redbubble. What fantasy fan doesn't love a good quest narrative, especially one which features a broad cast of unlikely heroes, thrown together by events and a common goal? In fact, such narratives are not confined to High or Epic fantasy, but can be found in everything from low, dark or urban fantasy, to space opera to military sci-fi to historical fiction. The week the dragons delve into the appeal of this kind of story and the 'band of brothers' cast which usually accompanies it. How can modern SFF writers bend and subvert tropes and archetypes to tell a more diverse and engaging story? Do you even need a fantasy team for your tale at all? And what are the origins of this type of narrative? On the slab this week; Classical mythology, Lord of the Rings, The Kings of teh Wyld by Nicholas Eames and many more. Lit & Liquor is no stranger to three things: poorly written literature (see: every other episode), alcohol that tastes more like motor oil (see: Bamboo Bullshit or Gin for the Win), and high emotions (see: every episode we've ever made). However, we don't know that the emotion of disappointment has ever run so high and strong as this week when we read "Bloody Rose" by Nicholas Eames. His debut novel, "Kings of the Wylde", was our top-rated book ever and is frequently brought up in later podcasts, as dutiful listeners can well attest. "Bloody Rose", on the other hand, stole something precious from us: approximately 8-16 hours of our life that we will never, EVER get back. Listen on if you dare, and we hope you have a wine as good as our Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon in which to drown yourself--er, your disappointment.(A special thank you to Amazon reviewer EOD Phil for our episode title)

The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia
After several weeks of huge releases we focused on smaller releases that we are equally as excited about. New songs by Gunship and The Midnight start off the show. What do we think about the latest entries into the synthwave genre? Rob doesn't do music, but he does do fantasy... uh... fantasy novels and he loved Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. Finally we attempted to try out The Last Drive-In Marathon on Shudder, but got thwarted by bandwidth and server issues. But we managed to check out some old exploitation films anyway. Remember if you use our link (https://amzn.to/2NSaxLU) we get a little bit of money towards server costs at no extra cost to you. So go ahead and buy that llama charm you've always wanted. Tonight Casey and Cameron discuss Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. Since there is a little disagreement about this novel Cameron is clearly correct and Casey is clearly wrong since Cameron is the one writing this! KotW is Eames' debut novel and was published this year by Orbit. It clocks in at 502 pages. Music used with permission by Antti Luode
