At a moment of increasing isolationism and xenophobia and -- for physicians – burnout, in a highly bureaucratic and profit driven health system, service in low resource high needs settings can be an antidote for what ails America and American medicine, at least for the individual clinician. John Lawrence has spent decades serving all over the globe as a pediatric surgeon, most recently in war torn Gaza and South Sudan.  He explains how he headed to college with plans to become a mathematician and then got diverted from that career trajectory while teaching math to Native American youth in Montana and seeing the consequences of poor access to needed healthcare.  As cliched as it may sound, physicians are supposed to serve humanity rather than just the well insured, and John exemplifies that point of view on a global scale.

Understanding How Nitric Oxide Affects Our Health

For quite some time now, ever since entering the world of red light therapy  — but particularly when getting into the realm of methylene blue  — I've wondered what nitric oxide's true impact on our body and wellness is. For the vast majority of my life, I was under the belief that all nitric oxide = good. That was ingrained at an early age with the countless pre-workout supplements I was taking during my heavy lifting days during high school through college. But it didn't stop there. The message of nitric oxide = good and that "more is better" has been perpetuated in the wellness, and even longevity, industries by countless experts and influencers. But how is that possible if one of methylene blue's main actions is nitric oxide inhibition? How is that possible if nitric oxide is a free radical and an environmental pollutant and, thus, is effectively an "electron stealer"?For whatever reason, I have never been able to get a straight answer from anyone on this topic. But serendipitously, I was recently reading a book that provided the most clearcut and sensible explanation that would allow for nitric oxide to be both "good" and "bad". The book is Methylene Blue: Magic Bullet: The Ultimate Mitochondrial Support, by Dr. John Lieurance. As I learned from the book, it turns out that nitric oxide is quite similar to how inflammation can be both a positive and a negative for our physiology; but with some additional nuances through in there. Today's episode is about nitric oxide and the roles it plays in our wellness and what the best strategies are for best harnessing the "good" nitric oxide while downregulating the "bad" nitric oxide.  If you found the information in today's episode particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. It was an historic class of freshman members to Congress in 1974. It was made up of 17 Republicans and 74 Democrats and many would go on to become household names. They turned the inner workings of the House Chamber upside down, removing longtime chairmen, and opening up the rules for more transparency and more access, in ways that are still with us today. In the midst of all of this Speaker Carl Albert, with his Majority Leader Tip O'Neill , made a decision that one of these freshman needed to be in leadership and he picked the one he thought had the most potential, and the brightest future, John W. Jenrette Jr of the 6th District of South Carolina. In this episode we look back at this class through the eyes of John Jenrette as he recalls the moves that changed an institution. We remember some of the all stars of this class like Paul Tsongas, Paul Simon, Max Baucus, George Miller, Jeff Jeffords, Jim Florio, Henry Hyde,  Tom Harkin, Henry Waxman, Larry Pressler, Butler Derrick, and the one member still serving in Congress today, now Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa.  They left a mark on their times, so much so, they were all the subject of an extraordinary book "The Class of '74" by John Lawrence. We use excerpts from the author's excellent interviews available on You Tube ,where he discusses the 1974 class and its impact.  https://youtu.be/E2MfhV8Ax0w An Interview with John Lawrence, author of "The Class of '74." - R Street InstituteJohn Lawrence , was a former Chief of Staff to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and worked for a while under Congressman George Miller, a member of the 1974 class. The book on the class received rave reviews like this one:"If you want to know how we got to this bitterly partisan time in politics, read this book. Through hundreds of fascinating interviews plus rigorous research, Lawrence shows us how unintended consequences of congressional 'reforms' started the country along this poisonous path. "-- Cokie RobertsWe highly recommend the book and include a link to the Amazon page here https://www.amazon.com/Class-74-Congress-Watergate-Partisanship/dp/142142469XIt was a historic moment in the history of the Congress and our Congressman John Jenrette was in the center of the action, a place he always seemed to be....The Realists UncensoredHey future listeners, it's Checkers and MJ here and we are two American men that are...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify AgriFutures On AirThe official podcast channel for AgriFutures Australia. Years ago, when I first resigned myself to working in the  "Real World" in order to support my family, I used to think that getting an MFA in Directing had been a waste of time and money on my part.  Because after all, besides directing in High Schools, Middle Schools and Community Theatre groups, I wasn't realy doing what I was trained to do.  And then as I got older, I kept thinking of Shakespeare's wonderful line "all the world's a stage and we are merely players in it" and that made me come to the conclusion, that it hadn't been a waste of time at all.  It was really one of the best ways to prepare FOR life.  Where else but in the  theatre, the other Fine Arts, and Philosophy does one have the opportunity to  explore the mysteries and tragedies of life,  the human condition, and our existential battle to find meaning in the pain and suffering of this world as well as its  joys and inspirations?  Theatre reveals some of the "pathways" to that meaning and  purpose.  The drive that all of us pursue and long to find, except, perhaps, the most cynical and bitter (Which is in itself a tragedy that dramatic literature explores often).  My long talk with Jack Canfora was such a "roadmap", and his plays are as well.  (Read them - a couple are even available on Amazon) In short . . . it was a joy and personally, one of my favorite interviews to date.  After listening to it, I hope this wrap up to that conversation will leave you wanting to hear more from him.  I know I look forward to our next talk. He provides a fascinating insight into what it takes to source and prepare the land, plant & take care of the coffee bushes and the ecosystem they are growing in. They round off the episode by discussing the new super specialty coffees that are made with experimental varieties and processing techniques.   KEY TAKEAWAYS  Specialty coffee is sustainably produced and has a superior cup quality and taste. The term 'specialty coffee' has been around since 1974. There is a lot of pride in the way specialty coffee is produced and made. Everyone brings their best, at every stage of the process. It only takes one underripe cherry, impurity, or foreign object to ruin your cup of coffee. Sustainable coffee farmers take care of the soil and the ecology of the area they are farming. Specialty farmers protect and nourish their bushes without using chemical herbicides or pesticides. There is more to coffee. More to discover and learn about. Take Geisha coffee for example. Super specialty coffees are the next iteration. In time, people will start talking about the different types of coffee like they do with wine now.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Specialty coffee is a sustainably produced product, and we all have a responsibility to that.'  ‘A defect in just one bean can destroy a cup or decanter pot.' ‘For specialty coffee, there is more to come – more to discover, learn about and create out of.'   EPISODE RESOURCES Mudhouse Specialty Coffee Roasters website: https://mudhouse.com/   VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee: https://umblecoffee.com/ You're disciplined and high achieving.
