Commitment is the ability to make and keep our promises which some people can find difficult. Especially as our journeys are often littered with challenges whether that is injuries, loss of form, loss of confidence or technical difficulties. In these moments, some athletes work harder but not smarter. Some cultures promote this “you've just got to work harder” attitude too and ignore the importance of rest and recovery. Therefore, this short bite sized episode, is all about educating you on why rest and recovery can aid your performances. Where well-esteemed strength and conditioning coach, Nick Grantham, talks about rest and recovery and how you can go about prioritising methods to help you stay in peak condition in the long term and be able to keep those promises that you made to yourself. Essential Learning Points In team sports an individual's needs can sometimes be overlooked. It's important to understand if your recover strategies are working for you. Coaches should prioritise athlete input and collaboration for optimal performance. Providing athletes with autonomy in recovery choices can increase motivation and self-belief. Nick developed the Recovery Pyramid with Mark Jarvis to provide a logical structure for recovery interventions in sports. Motivation is defined as “a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way”. Whereas according to Professor Peter Clough and Doug Strycharczyk commitment is “To what extent you make promises and the extent to which you will keep those promises. In short, motivation is simply a desire for something. Many individuals are motivated to perform better, however, what separates people is that only a small percentage are actually committed to doing the things that are necessary to perform at their best, consistently. In this episode, Steve Judge discusses fighting back after a serious car crash when both his legs were crushed where he demonstrated immense commitment levels. Paul Smith too, in his quest to keep a run streak going, tells you about running for over 5000 days in a row. Whereas on the flip side, Nick Grantham tells us about rest and recovery and why they are hugely important things that committed need to hear. Key Learning Points: How to keep on going despite dealing with one of the most unexpected and traumatic events that anyone could go through. Coping with excruciating pain, mental health challenges, and regular setbacks in his recovery. Paul shares the variety of challenges that he pushed through to keep his run streak going demonstrating a CAN DO attitude. Look after the basics, being professional around rest and recovery can help lengthen an athlete’s career and help them maintain more consistency in their performance levels. Demystifying Mental Toughness is for people who want to reach their goals faster and are curious what high performing athletes and professionals do to fulfil their potential. David Charlton shares insights, strategies and stories from leading athletes, coaches, psychologists and specialists to help you perform to your optimum level on a more consistent basis. If you’re a motivated athlete, coach, sport psychologist, mental game coach or executive listen in for proven and practical advice in this podcast. Nick Grantham is a performance enhancement specialist. His career spans four Olympic cycles and he is a founding member of the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association and an accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCC). He has become recognised as a specialist in athletic preparation and has a wealth of knowledge in the physical preparation and injury rehabilitation of high performance athletes at the most elite levels; including professional sport, Olympic, Commonwealth, European, and World Championship standards. Nick has worked closely with professional, National Governing Bodies and home institute medical teams assisting in the management, monitoring and implementation of injury management programmes. He continues to develop his knowledge of advanced training concepts and evidence based training principles. A sought after ‘expert’ he has presented seminars and practical workshops for the Football Association, BASEM, British Olympic Association and UK Strength & Conditioning Association. In this episode, Nick and David go on to discuss where highly motivated and hard-working people can go wrong, challenges that they face and the importance of rest and recovery to optimise their performance levels. Nick goes on to share helpful information around the recovery pyramid which provides a structure for tailoring interventions and practical solutions. If rest and recovery is something you can improve on this is well worth a listen! Essential Learning Points From This Episode • Fatigue is multifactorial both physiological and psycho-social. • In team sports the individuals needs can sometimes be ignored, an ice bath doesn’t work for everyone. • Look after your sleep, take care of your nutrition and body management first then look at other things such as compression garments, hydrotherapy… • Be brilliant at the basics! • If you can find ways to relax you’re going to make better decisions when you train and compete. • Being professional around rest and recovery can help the longevity of an athlete’s career and help them maintain consistency of performance. • Coaching messages and the organisational culture, as well as where athletes seek out messages can impact their perceptions around rest and recovery. • Endurance athletes can be obsessed with putting in the miles where resting up or doing a short session may be a better answer sometimes. • Athletes and support staff can sometimes lose sight of what is important and what actually drives performance. • Look to monitor and measure with a training diary recording your day to day thoughts and feelings. • Ask yourself the question - how do my current recovery strategies make me feel?

Nick Grantham, performance enhancement specialist and consultant, is this week's guest. Nick and I go way back to the mid 1990s and have worked alongside each other in the sphere of sports performance. Nick has worked with a range of elite teams, netball, gymnastics, basketball, premiership football, downhill mountain biking to name a few. Nick is also a leading light in taking an active role in developing content and advice for aspiring professionals and we've been increasingly aware that we share this as a motivation and a driver. So it was a great conversation, where we found there was some real overlap in our thoughts and perspectives, but as expected when I speak to Nick I find my thoughts and perspectives developed even further. Show notes: Nick's background, education, short lived rubbish career in banking, night school and university. Early career in Sport Science and the small community of like-minded people delivering applied work in the field. Having experienced a career in banking it gave Nick the determination to be tenacious in the pursuit of opportunities at university. Working at Lilleshall, gymnastic team, and the first strength and conditioning netball team role. Investment in the non-technical career skills, balancing work loads, management, income sources and side hustles Everybody is expendable and you will be replaced The reasons Nick left the English Institute of Sport The rewards of working with the general population and learning humility Consultancy and the balance of selling yourself and the development of confidence in his own abilities, experience and skillset. “You’ve got to historically where that sport has come from.” “Once I realized that there’s only four weird groups of people that like to lift for the sake of lifting, that was a big change in the way I coached.” “The athletes actually often know far more about what they need and how to get themselves in shape and how to keep themselves motivated, so, that two way street, listening, is really important.” “They can spot when you’ve not been in their world a mile off, and that instantly reduces that engagement.” This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. We are joined by Nick Grantham to discuss connecting with athletes in different sports and cultures in this weeks edition of The Podcast. After a run down as to how he has gotten to where he is today Nick dives right down the rabbit hole of connecting with athletes across multiple sports, including not just the sports but connecting with athletes of different cultures and backgrounds. This includes the idea of “positive pollution” and how that not only impacted how he works with his athletes, but his programming as well. Nick shares a great number of ways that he feels he has improved as a practitioner by working more with the athletes as opposed to dictating what the athlete is doing. He then shares with us how not just wearing hats, but also changing your language and direction is super important to increase how the athletes react to training. In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, I am speaking to Performance Enhancement Specialist and Author, Nick Grantham. I must admit, its taken me far too long to get Nick on the podcast. Nick did feature as a round table guest in a Special Football Edition of the podcast in episode #21 but it was great to get him on a podcast on his own. There are so many things I could have spoken to Nick about given his unbelievable experience but I decided on S&C for youth athletes and something that Nick has been very vocal about over the last 5 years and thats getting a job in S&C. Hopefully this will lead to a part 2 to discuss everything else. Enjoy. Who is Nick Grantham (education, background and current role) S&C for young athletes? Building a philosophy Where do we start? Are we obsessed with being able to quantify everything we do? Does this lead to a lack of creativity? Playing other sports? Getting and keeping a job in S&C Education vs experience Are young coaches doing it wrong when it comes to getting a job? Creating multiple income streams Personal training Why is it looked down upon? What can it add to a coaches experience? Writing & blogging Volunteering? Building a 'network' Its not what you know, its who you know? 'Networking' How? Why?
