The Lionesses' Euro victory captivated English football fans – but this success was once unimaginable.  In 1921, the English Football Association banned women from playing on any of its pitches, a ban that would remain in place for 50 years. Who were the women who fought back? How did they defy all odds to get the women's game to where it is today? In for Ros Taylor, Jade Bailey talks to Jean Williams, visiting professor at the University of Reading, about the early pioneers of women's football, the ban that prevented them from playing, and reasons to be optimistic about the women's game. “It's really important that women's football began as a professional entertainment, in the same way that men's professional football was at the time.” “In 1921, the FA says that no club that is affiliated with the FA should allow women to play on their grounds, which is every professional and amateur club in the country.” “The business model of women's football totally changes, and it invents a myth that women's football isn't as spectacular as men's, and because people live with that myth for 50 years it still influences what we have today.” “For me, female-owned, female-run, and feminist values are the future of women's football.” Buy Legendary Lionesses: The England Women's Football Team, 1972-2022 through our affiliate bookshop and you'll help fund Jam Tomorrow by earning us a small commission for every sale. Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 We'll be off for two weeks and we plan to have another episode out on September 9th. I have been watching Cold Case Files on Netflix. Chandra doesn't like true crime stuff but likes the ones about fed up women. She watched the new Unsolved Mysteries and the UFO story disturbed her. I watched a UFO documentary called Moment of Contact that really convinced me. Chandra has been watching the Cincinnati Open and her favorite player, Daniil Medvedev, is out. Novak Djokovic is back in the US despite still being unvaccinated. Royals: Minutes 6:00 to 22:30 Last weekend Meghan was photographed wearing a sticker on her inner wrist from a company called NuCalm. If it helps people and isn't super expensive it seems harmless. I emailed NuCalm support to ask if the disc vibrated and they said “There are no vibrations or anything that you will feel while wearing the disc. You will notice the disc will help you feel more mellow, relaxed, or calm, but there are no physical sensations that come from the disc.” The NuCalm CEO said Meghan isn't being paid for this. We wish she would get paid as the company is marketing themselves off her wearing it. We also got to see a photo of Meghan out with her girlfriends. She looks so young and radiant and it's nice to see her happy! Last week we talked about Meghan being seen out at a Taylor Swift concert in LA. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but Kate went to a concert too you guys! Chandra thinks the purpose of the story was to associate Kate with Rose Hanbury. The music festival was on the Houghton estate, where Rose and her husband, David Rocksavage, live. We heard all about it along with the fact that Kate drank spicy margaritas and that their party left a 700 pound tip. Maybe the point of those stories was that William and Rose are no longer hooking up. The Women's World Cup final is taking place this weekend in Australia between England and Spain. Prince William, the president of the English Football Association, isn't going to attend. We don't know where he is as he hasn't made an appearance since early July. We wonder how this will affect Australia's position within the Commonwealth. We got the first trailer for Prince Harry's Heart of Invictus series. It's a five part docuseries with one hour episodes and premieres on August 30th. It looks so heartwarming and I got teared up! Last week we talked about the Royal.gov.uk site removing Prince Harry's HRH titles from articles about him. There was an article in the Daily Mail stating that of course Harry and Meghan's titles haven't been removed and that the Letters Patent hasn't been annulled to do this. We've talked a lot about how the British press hypes the next big royal event and talks out of both sides of their mouths about whether the Sussexes should come. Charles doesn't invite Harry directly but tells the press he'd like him to come. They're now using that same strategy for Charles's 75th birthday coming up in November. Britney Spears: Minutes 22:30 to 25:30 Note that we recorded this before the story came out about Britney allegedly abusing Sam. Britney Spears and Sam Asghari are breaking up after just over a year of marriage and almost seven years together. Britney cheated and now Sam is allegedly threatening Britney. Comments of the Week: Minutes 25:30 to end Chandra's comment of the week is from Pinkosaurus on the post about Kate being the power behind the throne. My comment of the week is from K on the post about Leonard Bernstein's family defending Bradley Cooper's prosthetic nose in the biopic about him. Thanks for listening bitches!

#35: What leaders get wrong about resilience with Dr. Mustafa Sarkar

Coaching Through Stories

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 4, 2023 64:36

When you think of the word "resilience," what do you picture? Historically, it has meant the ability to withstand challenges and keep going. However, it can also be misunderstood to mean ignoring or suppressing negative emotions in order to seem strong.   This can lead to unhealthy habits of hiding or ignoring negative feelings rather than taking the time and care to properly address them. True resilience includes acknowledging and dealing with your emotions, not just powering through difficult situations.  Today, we are joined by Dr. Mustafa Sarkar, a leading expert in the study of resilience in both sporting and business settings. Dr. Sarkar is an associate professor of sport and performance psychology at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, and his research and consulting focuses on how high achievers thrive under pressure and maintain success and well-being, with a particular emphasis on resilience at the individual, team, and organizational levels. He also focuses on psychological safety.   As a chartered psychologist with the British Psychological Society, Dr. Sarkar works with organizations such as Google, the Premier League, the English Football Association, and various international Olympic Committees to create environments and cultures that promote resilience and psychological safety. In this episode, we will learn about how Mustapha followed his own path into the field of sports and performance psychology, despite expectations from his family and friends. We will also discuss the role that the environment plays in influencing resilience and provide practical tools that individuals can use to build their own resilience. Mustafa is a skilled researcher and practitioner, and I'm sure you'll enjoy the depth and insight he brings to the topic of resilience.  Key Points:  Resilience is not the sole responsibility of the individual but rather, the environment and relationships play a meaningful role in one's resilience.  Resilience can be situational and can vary over time; Resilience is not a stable construct but rather varies.  Resilience is a capacity that needs to be trained, not just reliant on one's experiences.  Episode Highlights  [00:00] Introduction  [01:27] Dr. Mustafa Sakar and his work.  [06:47] The value of research and putting it into practice  [09:36] Why Mustafa got into his career and work in sports psychology.  [14:44] Balancing pressure and passion  [19:42] Mustafa's current motivations in his work and on making an impact  [26:56] On resilience  [32:08] Understanding resilience   [37:21] The impact of resilience in an individual  [42:30] Emotional experiences and how they affect one's resilience and how perspective can help.  [44:39] Leaders and how they can help build team resilience.  [47:27] How leaders can balance challenge and support  [51:02] The effect of one's environment and how it can affect resilience, and what to do when present in a negative environment  [58:33] Habits that matter the most for high performance: (1) consistency and (2) building self-awareness.  Resources  The Long Win by Cath Bishop  Website: https://www.ntu.ac.uk/staff-profiles/science-technology/mustafa-sarkar

English soccer player Chioma Ubogagu is serving a nine-month suspension for failing a doping test after medication for a skin condition contained a prohibited substance. Ubogagu, who scored on her England debut in 2018, joined Women's Super League team Tottenham last year. She was initially provisionally suspended in January but details of the case and verdict were announced only on Thursday. Canrenone, a masking agent, was detected in an out-of-competition test in October. It was in anti-acne tablets that Ubogagu had been prescribed by her dermatologist in Texas where she played for the Houston Dash in 2018. In 2012, then-United States goalkeeper Hope Solo received only a public warning from the United States Anti-Doping Agency after Canrenone was detected in her urine test. An English Football Association regulatory commission found there were no intentional doping rule breaches by Ubogagu to improve performances and that she was taking the medication for a recognized condition. “I want to make clear that the medication had no performance-enhancing effects for me, but I still made the mistake of not being as diligent as possible, and as a result I am unable to play the game I love until I serve my suspension," Ubogagu said in a statement. “While my dermatologist is aware of my profession, it is also my responsibility to know more about the medications I am prescribed.” Ubogagu can't play again until October. Sarah Hamilton-Gill created the formula for her company, Leap Into HR Consulting, based on 28 years of consulting experience, and over three decades supporting start ups and SME's to grow. In the past two years, Sarah and her team have supported over 100 new start up consultants during the pandemic. Sarah joins Lucinda on this episode to discuss the ways in which you can make the leap yourself into the world of HR consulting. KEY TAKEAWAYS Before the pandemic, the world of remote working was still being stress-tested and not seen as a viable way of working. Now that most people work remotely, it has opened up the world of consultancy, which can be seamlessly operated from anywhere. Employee relations are now at the forefront of most corporate conversations, and the proliferation of quality, remotely available HR advice means that the HR sector has never been hotter. In order to get started as a consultant, focus upon the things you are truly good at, and the areas in which you excel. Stay in your comfort zone to start with, and gently branch out into other areas. Clarity is essential. You need to work out your ideal life/work balance, as well as your areas of expertise. Also, you must gain clarity on your proposed pricing model. BEST MOMENTS 'There's a fantastic opportunity right now to go into consulting. It's never been better' 'The marketplace has never been busier for outsourcing HR' 'The emphasis at the moment is very operational based' VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) How To Be A Change Superhero - by Lucinda Carney HR Uprising Mastermind - https://hruprising.com/mastermind/   www.changesuperhero.com www.hruprising.com         Leap Into Consulting - https://www.leapintoconsulting.com About The Guest, Sarah Hamilton-Gill In Sarah's early years in HR Consulting, it was a challenge to juggle a busy consulting diary with being a parent to two babies. It soon became clear to her that without the support and flexibility she got from being a business owner that she would have missed much of her boys growing up. Sarah was just 28 when she decided to go it alone and set up her HR Consultancy business in 1992. Her parents were not happy with her choice to leave the corporate life but today, having successfully built a 7-figure business and two 6-figure businesses, it's obvious she made the right decision. Sarah started working with smaller companies then, as her business evolved, moved onto bigger names. Organisations Sarah has worked with include BT, Vodafone, Santander and the English Football Association. She has gained awards including being a Finalist in the CIPD Best HR Consultancy (2018), Influential Small Business Owner winner (2018), HR Consultancy of the year (2020) Business and Industry Today and finalist for the Reinvention Award (2020). Brené Brown has always called herself a mapmaker and in her sixth and newest book, the Atlas of the Heart, out this week, she takes us on a journey through 87 of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. Her TEDx talk “the power of vulnerability” is one of the top five most viewed TED talks in the world with more than 50 million views. She joins Anita. This Sunday marks 100 years since women's football was banned by the English Football Association. Because of Covid the Women's FA Cup final, traditionally played in May, will take place with Arsenal taking on Chelsea and shown live on the BBC. Kelly Simmons, director of the Women's Professional Game at the Football Association; and Jen O' Neill, editor of football magazine She Kicks discuss the game. The number of tribunal cases in which employees are alleging menopause related discrimination is on the rise. Analysis of the Courts and Tribunals Service has shown that menopause was cited ten times in the first six months of 2021, and could rise to 20 by the end of the year, if the rate continues as it is. Research by Menopause Matters earlier this year found five cases in 2018, and 16 in 2020. Although these figures appear very small, nearly one million women are said to have left work due to menopausal symptoms and there is currently a Women and Equalities Committee inquiry looking into workplace practices around the menopause. So what can be done to prevent a situation getting as far as a tribunal? I'm joined by Lauren Chiren, who runs Women of a Certain Stage, providing coaching, mentoring and training on the menopause at work and Sinead Casey, a partner with the law firm Linklaters, who advise employers on workplace issues including menopausal women, and has been looking at the recent uptake in cases. Over the next few Fridays we'll be looking at alternative Christmas food ideas and who better to start off with than Ravinder Bhogal, journalist, chef and owner of Jikoni, her restaurant in London. Always challenging traditional notions of food preparation she joins Anita to share her thoughts on creating some rich adaptations of everything from brussel sprouts and ham to samosas and mathi. And tells us why Christmas is a particularly special time for her and her family. The British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell has been in court all week in New York City on sex trafficking and other charges. She's challenging claims that she groomed underage girls for convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein for sexual abuse. He died in prison in 2019. She's been in a US jail since her arrest last year. Three Black players who missed penalty kicks for England in the decisive European Championship shootout against Italy on Sunday night were subjected to racist abuse online, prompting the English Football Association to issue a statement condemning the language used against the players.Bukayo Saka, at 19 one of the youngest players on the England squad, missed the penalty that gave the title to Italy and denied England its first international trophy since the 1966 World Cup.It was England's third straight failure from the penalty spot in the shootout, with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho also missing. The FA said in a statement it was "appalled" by the abuse of the three players. The team had taken a knee before games at the Euros to signal its support for an end to racial inequality, and the young, multi-ethnic squad won the hearts of the soccer-mad country before the shootout failure brought out all-too-familiar messages of hate."We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible," the FA statement said. "We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real-life consequences."London's Metropolitan Police also said it was investigating "offensive and racist" messages on social media.Rashford, who plays for Manchester United, noted the racial abuse he received on social media in May after the team lost the Europa League final.England coach Gareth Southgate was criticised for his strategy of bringing in Rashford and Sancho off the bench to take penalties while star Raheem Sterling was sidelined in the shootout."They were the best takers we had left on the pitch," Southgate said. "We win and lose together."

There are no doubt a few hangovers across England on Thursday after a night of wild celebrations in the wake of the national football team's victory over Denmark in the European Championship semifinals. There will likely be many, many more on Monday morning if England manages to beat Italy in the final, its first in a major tournament since winning the 1966 World Cup.The worry is that beyond the headaches and the grouchiness, the outpouring of joy will worsen rising coronavirus infection rates, particularly among younger men, many of whom have yet to receive a vaccine against COVID-19.“Whilst association does not necessarily mean causation it is difficult to escape the conclusion that celebrations around the Euros have been an important factor in driving up the epidemic in the U.K.,” said Paul Hunter, a professor in medicine at the University of East Anglia. It's clearly difficult to rein in the enthusiasm associated with England's march to Sunday's final. There's a lot of pent-up frustration out there that has been further fueled by the rigors endured during coronavirus restrictions — and a fair bit of booze. The British Beer & Pub Association predicted that fans across the country would consume 6.8 million pints during the match alone. The scenes inside Wembley Stadium were particularly raucous — more than 60,000 fans were allowed to attend the match. Long-suffering England supporters outnumbered their Danish counterparts by around six to one.Two England fan favorites — Neil Diamond's “Sweet Caroline” and the Lightning Seeds' “Three Lions,” with lyrics by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner — were sung with delirium, even by the England team and staff who joined in the singalong after the final whistle blew. The partying didn't end there. On leaving the stadium, fans released red-colored smoke and carried on singing as they swarmed out of the stadium and went home, no doubt to celebrate some more.“It was a brilliant game, the atmosphere was absolutely amazing," said 18-year-old Scarlet Devereux. It wasn't all positive though. European football's governing body UEFA charged the English Football Association with three offenses at the stadium — the use of a laser pointer by fans, fireworks being set off and for disturbing the Danish national anthem.Another 27.6 million people tuned in at one point during the match — the biggest peak football audience ever for a single channel, according to broadcaster ITV.It seemed that most of them took to the streets the moment it ended.People clambered on top of London buses, while others opted to stand on the roofing of the subway station at Leicester Square. It was one of those nights.John Engall, 65, who was a student during England's only previous major triumph, said he felt “absolutely fantastic” after watching the match from Boxpark entertainment venue in Croydon, just south of London.“I remember '66 but I'm much more ecstatic now than when I was 10,” he said.As is always the case, there's always a cleaning up process following the festivities, and teams were out in force to remove litter on Thursday morning. Streets across England were strewn with empty disposable plastic pint glasses and food cartons. Even laughing gas canisters.London's Metropolitan Police said 23 arrests were made by officers across the capital following the match for offenses including common assault, public order and assault on police.Concerns have also been raised that the team's progress in the tournament is responsible for spreading coronavirus across the U.K., which is seeing a third surge in the pandemic as a result of the more contagious delta variant.Although infections are less likely in an outdoor environment, public health experts warned that the virus could still find a way to spread, notably as tens of thousands of fans travel to and from Wembley, which after the final will have hosted eight of the matches in the Europe-wide tournament. On Thursday, a closely-monitored c...

In the twenty-first episode of the Just Checking In Podcast, we spoke to Senior Referee Officer at the English Football Association, Farai Hallam. Farai is a qualified professional referee and a former professional footballer having played for Stevenage before several injuries curtailed his career before he was released by the club and forced him to change career. Referees across the English football pyramid face abuse both verbal and in some extremely rare cases physical by players on the pitch. They also face a barrage of abuse by fans on social media platforms as well as by pundits when they make the wrong decision. In this case, we wanted to show that referees are human beings too, with their own mental health to manage. We chatted to Farai about his football journey, both playing and refereeing, racism in football as well as incidents of racism he faced whilst playing the game and his mental health journey. We also discussed the interview he did for the Metro for journalist Natalie Morris as part of her 'Mixed Up' feature, which is a weekly series that aims to elevate the under-heard voices of the mixed-race population in the UK. The brain is the ultimate governor of the body. Without it, we wouldn't have strong muscles, healthy emotional wellness, good gut health, and the ability to perform to our highest potential each day. We've always known that the brain is a powerful organ, but without it, we wouldn't have such an amazing connection with the rest of our body.  Today on Wellness Force Radio, Sport Scientist and Clinical Sport Psychologist at Clinical & Sports Consulting Services and co-author of the latest book, The Brain Always Wins, Dr. John P. Sullivan, teaches us how our brain has the powerful ability to help us deeply connect with our emotions, make good decisions, and build relationships within our tribe.   JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST   Hydration. Nutrition. Sleep. As long as we provide these three essential daily activities to our lives, our brain will always win. Power Your Life We work so hard to be perfect, but the brain doesn't want us to be perfect. Perfection causes anxiety and trauma. What we really need is consistency. The brain craves consistency that is in line with our daily hydration, nutrition, and sleep. Without all three elements, we wouldn't be able to move and perform as well. Today, Dr. Sullivan will help us answer the ultimate questions, "How do we show up powerfully in our lives? How can we train for both brain performance and brain health?" How can both a top performing athlete and a busy parent manage and enhance their mental health by focusing on good hydration, nutrition, and sleep? What do our brain waves, meditation, and emotions all have in common? How does both our brain and gut function to help us thrive and perform each day? Tune in to find out. Listen to Episode 105 as Dr. Sullivan Uncovers What fascinates Dr. Sullivan about the brain and how his career began. Why Dr. Sullivan placed the following quote by Francis Crick on his website and what it means to him: "There is no scientific study more vital to man than the study of his own brain. Our entire view of the universe depends on it.” Dr. Sullivan explains what he means by calling the brain a "governor" throughout his book, The Brain Always Wins. Why does the brain always win? Why is the brain the leader of our bodies? How come our brains are so much larger than great apes? What is the benefit of this? What is the contrast between athletes and high performers vs busy parents? How can the MUSE headband help? The benefits of meditation to combat not stress, but the trauma we experience in our lives. A look at the 5 major sections of brain waves: Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. The proper way to nap for brain health plus the difference between napping and sleeping. What's the best amount of time to take a nap? Do you need 10 minutes or longer to get the full benefits from napping? How our brains are able to detoxify while we sleep. When we're stressed, does the brain produce more toxins that need to be washed during a sleep cycle? The importance of water and staying hydrated to keep our nervous system healthy. If we don't have sleep, hydration, or food, we simply cannot move and that's why the first three or so necessary to create a healthy brain. Training for brain performance and training for brain health: How do we do both? What's the correlation between professional athletes who train hard and people in every day life? How can we train or vagus nerve to have a better connection between the gut and the brain? How does the vagus nerve benefit us? Sport Psychology practices that athletes put to use that we can also use: the power of music for our brains, heart, vagus, and more. How can Ketosis help us have a healthy brain? The best way to keep your mind in a consistent state of flow and combat fatigue while traveling between time zones. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Our quality of health including muscle, nutrition, and heart function are all in service to our brain. Our brain has a solid part and a place in everything concerning our health and wellness. We can improve our health and keep it in top condition with three factors: hydration, nutrition, and sleep. The brains is the governor of the body and is wired to help us survive. Thanks to our evolution, with our brains we have the ability to hone in on our background environment and  predict at least a minute ahead of time of what will happen next. It's because of our ability to first feel and then think that allows the brain to always win. Unlike great apes, we're able to make emotional connections that allow us to make good decisions. It's because of our emotions that we're able to evaluate friendships and stay connected within our tribe. We're not made to be isolated from other people and our emotions help us to stay balanced. Power Quotes From Dr. John Sullivan [tweetthis]"Our brain is wired to survive, but we can to certain things day to day to make it more resilient." - @BrainAlwaysWins[/tweetthis] "There is no scientific study more vital to man than the study of his own brain. Our entire view of the universe depends on it.” - Francis Crick  "Heart health, maintaining lean muscle mass, nutrition and a multitude of other factors all serve the brain. They are not in service for isolation; they are in service to our brain. If we don't think about our brain as the vehicle for our personal performance, our quality of life, our ability to give  to others and to give to ourselves, then we're really missing a critical point." - Dr. John Sullivan on his take on the above Francis Crick quote.  "Excellence is grounded in the billions of neurons between our ears. Arguing this point also comes from the same neurons between our ears." - Dr. John Sullivan "Human variation starts with the brain and I try to assist people to have a better quality of life or better performance in certain situations. The brain's function is not "cookie cutter"  because it's not the same pattern for everyone. But because we're uniquely wired to survive, everyone has these strengths that they can bring to the table." - Dr. John Sullivan on his fascination with the brain.  "Central to our life is our brain health. Without our brain health, we don't have health and then we don't have performance." - Dr. John Sullivan on why the brain is the governor of the body. "The brain always wins because it's a predictive organ. It's always giving us consistent information about our health. It is incredibly efficient in helping us get information, understanding what that information means, and using that information to benefit our health. The brain always wins because it is designed to survive." - Dr. John Sullivan on why the brain always wins.  "There is no such thing as mental toughness or grit. These are re-packaged terms with very poor science. Everyone's ability to perform on any given day is based upon their health." - Dr. John Sullivan on what it means to have a strong mind.  "Life is not about stress. If you look at neuroanatomy, life is about trauma and it's either a little "t" or a large "T." Trauma requires rest and recovery which meditation provides." - Dr. John Sullivan on how meditation can help us with trauma. "We can all expect stress or some type of challenge, but we have to plan for the recovery so that it all balances out. Only then can we become resilient, evolve, grow, and adapt." - Dr. John Sullivan on the power of rest and recovery when we're stressed out. "Our culture is all about work, work, work and we've lost the idea that rest is where it all comes together." - Dr. John Sullivan on the benefits of rest. "Our brain is wired to survive, but we can to certain things day to day to make it more resilient." - Dr. John Sullivan on how to make our minds stronger.  "You don't have to be perfect. In fact the brain hates perfection because it induces anxiety and it creates more neurological stress. We only really need consistency to have a happy brain. Looking at our ancestors and evolution, if we needed perfection, we wouldn't have been able to survive as a species." - Dr. John Sullivan on why we're not wired to be perfect. "What we've learned is that we think first and then we feel, but it's actually the other way around. We feel first and then we think. It doesn't work any other way than that because the limbic system was designed for survival." - Dr. John Sullivan on the purpose of our emotions.  "Any important decision we've ever made in our lives has been made on emotion. The more important the decision, the more emotion is involved. This why emotion regulation is so key to decision making." - Dr. John Sullivan on why are emotions are so important to help us make decisions.  "Wellness is having an individualized, thoughtful, and flexible approach to being able to be healthy and meet life's demands." - Dr. John Sullivan on what wellness means to him. Players, fans and administrators have all pledged their determination to kick racism out of the sport, but there's plenty of evidence to suggest the anti-racist rhetoric isn't working. Lord Ouseley, is a veteran equality campaigner who was appointed to a senior advisory role with the English Football Association. But now he's quitting - has football failed to tackle its race problem?
