394: Ian Markow on A Practical Approach to Mobility, Breath and Movement Training

Just Fly Performance Podcast

Today's podcast is with Ian Markow. Ian is a personal trainer and movement educator based in Delray Beach, Florida, and founder of Markow Training Systems. Ian utilizes methods and philosophies from Functional Range Conditioning, the Postural Restoration Institute, and more as he works with clients from the general population to professional athletes. Ian is an internationally recognized expert in fitness, mobility, and human performance and has a number of educational programs, courses, and workshops. With the vast amount of information on corrective exercise, movement, and mobility training, knowing where to start and how to view the human moment equation can be challenging. As helpful as movement training can be, it can also easily create a training narrative that an athlete is dysfunctional, and promote a “nocebo” effect of movement limitations, as well as create an environment of high pressure on the part of the trainer to elicit particular movement and range of motion outcomes. On today's podcast, Ian discusses taking a practical perspective that centers on what an athlete can do rather than what they cannot and the simple gateways he manages to engage with the individual's breathing, mobility, and alignment. He also gets into ideas on managing more superficial movement abilities versus more deep-seated structural elements, gives his take on assessments, and much more. I just haven't found anything that gets there." - Ian Markow "I think you can generally get stronger. So let's strength train and keep you fit while we work around some of your limitations, but also specifically for your elbow. When you go to play tennis or paddle, why don't you go ahead and do these elbow cars? Let's do a few more of these every day and just keep the thing moving." - Ian Markow "I could care less what her hip rotation is because we're obviously crushing it. She feels great. She's more confident. You know what I mean? So those are the outcomes that matter, and it all comes down to the goal." - Ian Markow "In another way of putting it, I'm kind of thinking about stumbling, thinking about what the right phrase is, but just keeping the training vibe. It's keeping the training vibe and is the main thing feeling better and not getting bogged down with other little minutiae.

Short episode summary The hip bone's connected to the backbone. The backbone's connected to the neck bone… Tune in and revisit the idea that it's all connected!   Timestamps of big takeaways Your Body is All One Unit [00:21] Coach Caroline opens the episode with a story about a RunRX student that had a foot injury, and how it reminded her and Coach Valerie that our bodies are all connected! [00:54] As the student began working on stretching and releasing the tension in her shoulders, her foot pain stopped. [01:09] Your body is all one unit and when one area of your body is hurting, it can impact another.   Think Of Your Body as Links in a Chain [02:16] When something in the chain is preventing a full range of motion, it can impact your entire chain. You have to work out the kinks so to speak to move through a full range of motion. [02:50] Stretching in one area might not be enough to give you full range of motion.   Work The Whole Body [03:19] Since everything is connected, you need to keep all of your body limber and open the movement chain. [04:39] Some of our workouts will make you sore in places you didn't even realize you were working. This is just further proof that the whole body is connected!   Pain Isn't Random [05:06] You may experience pain and not understand what caused it. Maybe it's how you sat or walked or exercised.  [06:09] So many things can contribute to heel spurs or plantar fasciitis that have nothing to do with running. It all goes back to movement.   Why We Focus on Standard of Movement Training [06:43] Many runners that come into our programs don't have a good foundation for strength training. For example, many people think running hurts their knees, but in reality, running is one of the most natural moves there is. [07:13] So we focus on how to stand, how to walk, and how to run. Doing these movements correctly will help heal all of the painful areas in your life.   Rate, Review & Subscribe Reminder Don't forget to like and subscribe to our show. Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!In this Wednesday Q&A, we answer your questions about how to motivate people to move, training for equestrians, why pain is coming back during in-person classes, & PNF. Your questions:* I feel like I'm surrounded by inert people - my husband, my family, my coworkers… I'm not a teacher but want to ask how to encourage others in your life to get off their bums and move. Signed, frustrated and concerned for humanity.* Our pony injured himself. He's okay and he'll be fine. But his recovery will take months and all that we can do regarding exercise and movement in this time will be walking on flat, solid ground. There will, of course, be lots of cuddling for him and carrots, gentle stretching, mobilization, fascial release, silly tricks, etc. I got him. But what about me? I need to substitute our regular movement, which is riding, walking, running together on varied ground for me. I want to be ready when he comes back from his injury, I estimate that we'll slowly start back mid-June again. I want to use this time to explore and improve across the movement spectrum. His injury frees up two of my resources, time and energy. No planning for his training, taking care of him, etc. etc. So what do I do? Both specific suggestions and general advice are welcome and have fun with it. I have lots of ideas, but I know that you'll have excellent advice and I'm looking forward to your perspective.* I feel so much better after ten months of LYT. My chronic neck and back pain is gone. My question is that I notice when I go to in-person classes, whether it's yoga, pilates, strength training, I tend to get a little bit of the pain again afterwards. So is this in my head or how do I deal with this? Up my LYT to four times a week? I'm currently doing 2 to 3 times a week. I will do whatever, would be fine with more LYT but was just thinking I needed to add more different classes in my routine, but maybe not? Second guessing it.* Thoughts on PNF? I'm very familiar with this technique, however, strongly depends on who. I'm asking this since my colleague who's a yoga/pilates instructor, not physio, offers this as a private for 60 to 90 minutes. It's popular and clients seem to like it. But my physio brain doesn't. Doesn't seem safe to do it for so long nor necessary for the whole body and for virtually anyone. Thoughts? Clients are just average people and not athletes. To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: lytyoga.com/blog/category/podcasts/Do you have a question?DM Lara on Instagram: @lara.heimannDM Kristin on Instagram: @kbwilliams99Email us at support@lytyoga.comSponsors:Visit almondcow.co/shop and use code LARA for a discount off your purchase!Join the LYT Team in Europe this summer:https://shop.lytyoga.com/collections/in-person-workshops-2023 Hosted on Acast. Unlocking Your Body's Potential Embodied Movement Training Systems | Lizzy Wolterbeek

The Code: A Guide to Health and Human Performance

Key Takeaways • The more dynamically you move your body, the more potential there is for injury. It is important to master the foundations of how to do an exercise correctly prior to adding intensity or weight. • Many trainers at gyms and group fitness classes focus on goals like weight loss and will not put as much time into training people how to do the movements correctly. • A person's body type and weight do not necessarily reflect their health or level of fitness.   How can you unlock your body's full potential? In today's episode Dr. Andrew talks with Lizzy Wolterbeek, owner of Embodied Movement Training Systems in Centennial, Colorado about using movement to unlock the full potential of the body. Lizzy has experience not only in training, but also has personal experience coming from a weight lifting background and having spent much of her younger years fighting an eating disorder. These experiences have helped her to create a space that focuses not on weight loss goals like a large majority of trainers, but instead on rehabilitative and injury preventative movement and overall wellness goals.    In a group setting or a fitness class with a weight loss focus, there can often be not enough time spent on preparing the body properly for intense movement. When you go to those classes, you expect to feel sore and exhausted, so you may not even realize that you are doing an exercise incorrectly and causing harm to your body. When those same exercises are done properly, they can be very beneficial to your body, but first you must learn the foundations. By learning how to correctly move your body with a personal trainer like Lizzy beforehand, you can get a lot more out of fitness classes and be much less likely to injure yourself.   Your body has the potential to do incredible things and propel you toward your fitness goals, but only if you take care of yourself properly. If you do not eat right and get enough sleep prior to exercising the next day, you will likely hurt yourself. Similarly, if you do not learn the correct form for an exercise or spend time stretching and preparing your body, or amp up the intensity or weight too quickly, you may hurt rather than help yourself.    Quotes • “We take the time to look at how you move before we have you move intensely and with weight.” (29:42-29:48 | Lizzy) • “They want to continue to go to one of those group classes. And I say, go ahead, but let's spend the time in here really nailing down all of the stuff that you're not getting there.” (35:11-35:19 | Lizzy) • “If you're not executing it well, it's not a good movement. It could actually be a harmful movement.” (38:11-38:14 | Lizzy)  • “There's no one body type for any situation. And how you look does not necessarily correlate to your level of health.” (51:15-51:24 | Lizzy)   Links Connect with Lizzy Wolterbeek: Website | https://embodiedmovementts.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/embodiedmovement_ts/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/lizzyatembodiedmovement Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/lizzofasho/ Connect with Physio Room:  Website | https://physioroomco.com/  Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/dr.andrewfix/  Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

From Dr. Will: "Currently I work as a chiropractor in Banff Alberta, however my passion is human movement/biomechanics. I put theory into TEST to find out what works and what doesn't. The Bruce Lee quote “take whats useful and disregard the rest” is how I find movement truth. The ultimate truth is in the movement not the theory, it has to work in reality. Now Running/Gait mechanics and martial arts (especially boxing) is how I test truth in movement; theory is always put to the test! From my teenage years into my late 20s, I spent significant time within mainstream fitness practices such as Crossfit, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and bodybuilding, not in that particular order. I have also spent time playing soccer, boxing, skiing amongst other sports. Having stacked many injuries in my teens/20s from improper training, I was led on a journey into chiropractic and sports injuries. I have worked with 1000s of injured patients in 8 years of chiropractic practice and have seen many injuries in the gym as a former Crossfit coach for 5 years. I've now spent 1000's of hours learning and practicing systems such as Functional Range Conditioning, Weckmethod and Goata. Goata has my interest at the moment, as I see it as a platform for a new Paradigm in movement. I believe we (Experts) are using incorrect maps of movement, therefore injuries are prevalent in sport and life. I will always test and retest in my own theories in real movement. Join me on my journey to change the movement game for the public and experts." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-art-of-move/message

Tom introduces us to the movement pillar of the principles of health by showing us how to craft your training regime in a way that will help improve your movement and minimise your chance of injury, what action you should take if you are unfortunate and gain an injury and what advice you should follow to ensure you can follow your daily activities without succumbing to physical impairment or pain. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you receive an injury and it does not improve or is worsened by your training consult a professional for diagnoses and follow their advice. Aim for a low upward trajectory. This is a long term goal so don’t push for impossible results over short periods. Identify your weaknesses and concentrate on improving them in the context of your requirements. We are looking for improved levels of general health. Understand relative intensity. If you work out at maximum intensity for a length of time your body may not be able to keep up. Everyone’s relative intensity requirements are different because their fitness levels are different. Focus on quality rather than quantity. Concentrate on doing the movement well before you increase resistance or speed. Prioritise whole body movements such a lifting and moving objects. Curling weights etc. are not going to help increase your whole body strength. Do some sort of exercise 5 to 7 days a week. Consistency is key over intensity and duration. Make it a habit. Enjoy your journey. Make the most of it. Just be out there and doing it, you’re going to get there eventually. Learn to breathe. Correct breathing technique is very important and we will be covering this subject in later episodes. BEST MOMENTS ‘We don’t just want this in our forties or fifties we want this everyday of our lives. We still want to be doing these things in into our eighties and nineties.’ ‘Aim to be hitting your next decade in as good a shape or better than your previous decade.’ ‘Us non Olympic hopefuls don’t need such a high level of specificity.’ ‘Don’t get pulled into a competition with others.’ ‘People struggle to squat their body weight yet in the gym they’re squatting 50,60,70, 80 kilos.’ ‘Congratulate yourself. You’ve taken an active role in your own health.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://youtube.com/channel/UCQXAka99a6MdZexeEJaMZbAhttps://m.facebook.com/elevatehealthuk/https://www.elevatehealthuk.com/https://instagram.com/elevate_healthuk?utm_medium=copy_link ABOUT THE HOST TOM BUTTERFIELD I have always been interested in sports, unfortunately injuries and poor training decisions curtailed my dream of becoming a professional football player. Welcome back to the state of the industry podcast. For the next two episodes I will be chatting about getting buy-in from clients and implementing ground-based movement practices into training with Richard Scrivener. Richard and I met some three plus years ago at the FILEX conference in Australia and I can truly say the encounter changed the trajectory of my career. Richard was the first to introduce me to the ground-based movement practice of Animal Flow in addition to the concept of Mechanotransduction. This brought me to Katie Bowman and her book Move Your DNA, as well as several other research articles. It is safe to say that my perspective on movement and the body changed, virtually over night, and this quickly became evident in my teaching and the way I trained (both myself and clients). In addition to being an international presenter, Richard is the Lead Global Master Instructor for Animal Flow, he works as the research and development manager for TRAINFITNESS, and is a London-based personal trainer and nutritional therapist. He is a health and fitness veteran; a wealth of knowledge, and I had a blast catching up and shooting the breeze with my old friend. I know you'll enjoy this conversation, so I'll see you on the other side.

On this week's episode, Harvey shares a conversation with the brilliant Austin Einhorn - Founder of Apiros Movement Training in Santa Cruz, California.  During his tenure of coaching movement, Austin has had the privilege to help athletes and organizations in every major professional sports league in America; including the PGA, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Rockets, US Men's National Volleyball Team, Stanford Men's Volleyball Team, Chinese Olympic Committee, and professional surfers.   Before finding his career in natural movement training, Austin had a decorated career playing volleyball at the University of California - Santa Cruz.  He garnered a 3-time All American status, helping the program finish 2nd and 3rd in the NCAA Tournament. Austin's journey growing up as a naturally curious kid, as well as his passion for athletics led him to constantly internally challenge the current movement training paradigm.  He views the path of athletic mastery as an "encompassing blissful journey where we progressively improve our beliefs, movements, language, the optimization of our cellular and mitochondrial health, psychology and more." As Harvey and Austin dive deeply into the nuance of movement, they discuss the misunderstanding of shoulder movement, the value in learning how babies move, the evolution of movement through in history and through a lifetime, and Austin's quest to minimize non-contact injury.  Check out where to find the key insights below! She had to completely rediscover + reinvent herself from the ground up; yoga was her tool and this business is what grew of that healing journey. She started Flux Fit Soul in 2013 when first figuring out some physical health issues and autoimmune diagnoses. It's in this chaos that she began her personal journey towards healing + wellness. Today’s episode features founder of Achieve Performance, Jeremy Frisch, and guest co-host, Dr. Tommy John.  Both of these individuals are making a big difference in not only the world of youth sports, but also in teaching the importance of global human movement skills, as well as in bringing the importance of movement as a necessary and healing force to the general population. Jeremy Frisch has been a past guest on episodes 100 and 134, and Dr. Tommy John has been a guest on 101 and 139.   These two guys both have a passion for redeeming what our sports industry has become in regards to not only sky-rocketing injuries, but also restoring the core of what it means to be a kid, an athlete, and a human being, which is creativity, play, and free movement, before external parameters, competition, stress and judgment are all added through early specialization and over-coaching. We spend a lot of time zooming in on things like sets, reps, exercise modalities and training blocks.  At the end of the day, these factors are important, but the long term process by which athletes are facilitated, and the joy that happens when this is done correctly, is an area of our industry that truly demands our focus and attention.  Knowing how to progress youth athletes, and also how to integrate sport coaching with physical preparation on all levels of performance helps us all become more aware and well-rounded in our coaching process. On today’s show, Jeremy, Tommy and I discuss changes in coaching emphasis from youth through adult, the importance of a thorough warmup that covers a variety of movement skills, how Jeremy’s experience as a youth sport coach has helped his process and integration in physical preparation, the importance and relevance of free play for children vs. organized coaching, and much more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more.   Key Points How perception of watching adult athletes changes when you have experience watching children learn and play How moving non-injured body parts and joints is critical in the process of injury and recovery How coaching changes from working from youth to high school, to adult trainees How to structure a warmup to provide a powerful strength and movement stimulus, as why this is the most important part of the total workout in many cases Jeremy’s experiences as a youth sport coach (e.g. football, baseball, tennis), how he incorporates physical preparation methods, and how this work has impacted his physical preparation coaching The reasons that un-structured play is superior to organized sports for athletic (and personal) development in children Why pickup basketball is crucial for creative development in basketball players, even if it seems like a “lazy” pace Is it possible to build skills later in life if a kid missed the window of development early on “When we were kids, when we got hurt, what did we do? As quick as we could we got back outside trying to play… it’s like we knew intuitively that moving around makes you heal” “When he got done squatting, when they took the cast off his arm, his arm had more muscle on it than when he started… he did 20 rep breathing squats and that… like 3x a week (being unable to train his arms in that time period)” “The majority of young athletes coming in, their feet are shot, and if their feet are shot, their hips are going to be shot” “When you start with a  kid, the change from play to more organized stuff starts when he or she is ready… I’ve had kids who are just studs physically, are they are the most immature kids in the whole world, so I pulled them back because if I tried to organized things to much, they shut down and they don’t come back.” “For ages 13,14,15 it’s more technical based, for ages 16-19 we are cleaning, we are throwing weights around,

Allenarsi in maniera estremamente dettagliata e schematica o lasciarsi andare alle sensazioni, all'esplorazione e all'improvvisazione?

My guest this week is Sonia Story, developer, and teacher of the Brain and Sensory Foundations curriculum that shares powerful movements for transforming brain, body, and sensory challenges. Sonia Story has studied with many of the world's finest experts in Neurodevelopmental Movement programs, completing training in Rhythmic Movement Training, Brain Gym, Neuro-Sensory-Motor & Reflex Integration, and more. She teaches live and online courses for parents, OTs, PTs, SLPs, VTs, educators, counselors, health practitioners, and caregivers, and continues to learn from her clients of all ages. In this episode, Sonia and I discuss what neurodevelopmental movements are and how they impact children and adults to significantly improve and mature brain and sensory systems. Children on the spectrum, with ADD, ADHD, anxiety, or sensory, behavioral, or developmental disorders can greatly benefit from incorporating movement practices and techniques into their daily routine. To learn more about Sonia and her life-changing Brain and Sensory Foundations curriculum visit moveplaythrive.com. What is Neurodevelopmental Movement? The innate movements that infants do in the womb and in early infancy These movements are foundational for proper brain, body and sensory maturity They are like a ‘template' in the brain that we naturally do as healthy human beings if there is room within the womb and the environment is not stressed   Innate Movements Natural infant reflex movements like sucking the thumb, or grasping when a finger is pressed into babies palm These movements help set up our brain networks, they mature the brainstem and help us feed ourselves, learn and are our survival and protection mechanisms When there are gaps in these movements from infancy the child can be left in a state of anxiety or flight or fight   Empowerment to Recognize Neurodevelopmental Issues Our culture has set us up for many of these issues to happen without our own fault We live more sedentary lives and partake in more passive activities vs. active activities where body movement is necessary Learning about neurodevelopmental movements is essential for all families I.e. Your child could have hit all their motor skill milestones but something simple in their infancy or birthing story could have subtle effects on their behavior   Where to learn more about Sonia Story... Over the years, the Fuse Pilates method has evolved to offer unique hybrid mat, tower, reformer, and chair classes, as well as private instruction. Her classes are heavily influenced by her background in Pilates, yoga, and barre, as well as a three-year mentorship with Julian Littleford. Fuse is a proud affiliate of Julian Littleford Pilates and was voted the Best Pilates studio in Washington, D.C. by Washingtonian Magazine.  In addition to her passion for creating fun and effective workouts for her group classes, Mariska is passionate about educating teachers and patients about exercise for neurological conditions. Her Pilates for MS™ Teacher Training incorporates the latest research into neuroplasticity and neurorehabilitation into a Pilates program design for multiple sclerosis, stroke, and other neurological conditions. It is core curriculum for Carolyne Anthony’s Center for Women’s Fitness’ Women’s Health Pilates Certificate. Mariska is a PMA@ Certified Pilates Teacher who completed her comprehensive training through BASI Pilates. She has additional training through Power Pilates, Peak Pilates, Balance Body, and PureBarre, as well as several specialty certifications. She also studies regularly with friend and “spirit guide,” Jennifer Kries.  A frequent guest writer for fitness and lifestyle blogs, Mariska is currently writing a book on exercise for neurological conditions, developing additional training manuals for the Fuse method, teaching internationally, running a studio, and spending rare time off with her husband and their dog-child – a Basenji named Zoe. About Meghann Koppele Duffy   Meghann Koppele is a Kane School, Pilates Method Alliance, and iM=X certified instructor as well as a Certified Strength and Condition Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She has also completed the Functional Anatomy for Movement & Injuries Workshop at Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Meghann received her undergraduate degree in exercise science from the University of Scranton and a Master's degree in Applied Physiology from Columbia University. After completing her Master's degree, Meghann opened a Pilates studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, where she worked with clients with a variety of conditions including severe back pain, sports injuries, pre- and postnatal, and multiple sclerosis. She also worked with clients who simply wanted better fitness or to achieve their weight loss goals. After five years running a studio, Meghann decided to sell her business to refocus on her first love of teaching and helping others. Over the past twelve years, Meghann has had the privilege of working closely with many clients with multiple sclerosis (from early stage to advanced), as well as their doctors. After compiling medical research and anecdotal evidence, she created her own Pilates-based protocol to help her MS clients. Realizing that teachers were ill-equipped to work with this population, she joined forces with Kelly Kane and Matt McCulloch via the Kinected Mentor Program to help her further develop her work into a workshop for other teachers, personal trainers, physical therapists, and other rehab specialists.    In 2014, Meghann and Mariska Breland decided to combine forces to help educate other movement professionals about Pilates for Multiple Sclerosis. They realized that their programs were entirely complementary (down to the way each teacher believes a session should begin). Meghann then joined the Pilates for Neurological Conditions team and teaches a 3-day Pilates for Neurological Conditions course based off Mariska's book Pilates for MS and Neurological Conditions in addition to teaching her own Advanced Neuro workshop based on the Koppele Method. Since 2014 Meghann has taught her method nationwide and across the world in Australia.  She is also currently working with top hospitals to incorporate her method into the standard treatment plans.   In 2017 Mariska and Meghann joined forces yet again to create the first online movement education tool for people with Neurological Conditions.  They were both sick of Pilates being so cost prohibitive and decided to create the Neuro Rehab Movement to help bring their successful methods to everyone at a fraction of the cost.  The Neuro Rehab Movement will be live in March 2018, sign up  for our newsletter to stay up  to date.   Meghann is also the Resident Coordinator and Teacher Trainer at the acclaimed Kane School teacher training program at Kinected in NYC.  For more information about getting certified through the Kane School or continuing education at Kinected please email education@kinectedcenter.com or visit Kinected's website.

“The ultimate experience of being mindful occurs when we forget about everything, even the mindful self and doing. In that mode, we are full of energy, utterly self-generated.” ― Sang H Kim ― Mindfulness & movement. This week on The HERO Podcast we're combining what I feel are two cornerstones of healthy, fulfilled living - mindfulness, and movement.  Alone these things have had a drastic impact on the quality of my life. But when you add them together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, so to speak. In other words, adding a little mindfulness to your movement practice is one of those simple things that can 10x your results - both those that you might be chasing after and some you might not even be aware of until they occur. Let's dig in. What we cover in this week's episode of The HERO Podcast:  What exactly is mindful movement and why is it so important if you're looking to cultivate a calm, peaceful state of mind? Why mindful movement could help you avoid injury and become a stronger, better athlete or mover. What is the future of fitness? Is the focus moving away from the beach body and toward wellness and functional pain free movement? Or are we pushing toward maximizing strength, maxing out our power outputs, and creating a body that can survive the zombie apocalypse? I have seen the introduction of more trends and fitness fads over my 25 years in the fitness industry than I have been mistaken for Mark Wahlberg in the airport (which happens often). We have gone from body building, aerobics, personal training, tai bo, spin classes, Crossfit, Zumba, Spartan Racing, and Ninja Warrior training. The pendulum swings and it sways and it repeats itself throughout history. I believe the one constant, that may not be sexy and may not be marketable, but is always relevant and the priority for a happy life….MOVEMENT TRAINING. In this episode I share with you how training for movement and not just the basics but hopping, jumping, rolling, crawling and balancing on apparatus like the #PATCH (@themovementnerd) will truly give you the body that can accomplish everything you need in todays world.
