While music has been consumed since time immemorial, video games are a much less popular medium by comparison. In this entry of an ongoing series meant for non-gamers, we wanted to explore how music is used in video games to great effect. And - in the circumstances of a global pandemic - what insights we might find within the music of video games. How do their soundtracks ward of the monotony of repetitive tasks? How does music help clarify the tone of a given moment or encounter?

My first podcast (hopefully not my last) about the hobby I love. My passion for games I’ve found is both a blessing and a burden; those who play games share my passion and those who don’t fear my enthusiasm. These are my own experiences of trying to get non-gamers to play the games I adore!
The act of playing has shown clear benefits for our moods, social bonding and problem solving abilities. In children, play is an invaluable means of learning about the world. In the realm of video games, play can become an increasingly time-consuming and compulsive activity. This week, we’re joined by Yagmur Ugur to explore the intersection of video games and productivity. Where is the line between reward or relief and addictive pastime? How do we make use of recreation to reinvigorate or recontextualize our reality?

Since time immemorial, competition and contest have been a cornerstone of recreation, identity and society. Alongside cultural and technological development, sports have also evolved over time. With the rise of the Internet and video games, gaming now offers its own, highly competitive and lucrative arena in eSports. This week, we discuss their perception in the mainstream and how they shine a light on the way we define and interact with traditional sports. Can the definition of a sport expand with a society? What function(s) do sports serve that eSports might also satisfy? How do sports influence players and spectators differently?

Episode 156: BGG Recap & Game Gifts For Non-Gamers Length: 1:05:40 Show Links: RSS | iTunes | Stitcher | Download Episode Welcome back to Vox Republica, the Cardboard Republic Podcast! We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: Game nights may have been lacking lately, but Ryan returns from BGGCon to make up for that with plenty to spare! In this episode Erin and Ryan recap some of the highlights of this years's BGGCon and then pivot into the holidays by suggesting some games you can offer up at holiday events filled with adults who may not have touched a game since Monopoly. GUESTS: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (1:11): None! Because of BGGCon! QUICK TOPICS - (1:11): BGGCon! Ryan discusses - at length - a number of game highlights, as well as his favorite part of the convention. FEATURED TOPIC - (34:13): Rather than rattle off our own version of a holiday gift guide, we take a different angle going into the holiday season talking about games to bring to events that will appeal to a wide crowd - be they gamers or not. The best Yankee Swap games are abstract, accessible, and easy-to-learn. This leads to suggestions ranging from some classic non-gamer games (like LCR) to some great Gateway level alternatives, like Splendor. PLUGS - (1:04:57): We’re raffling off a copy of Rocky Road to a lucky Patreon backer. Consider donating today! As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos, Instagram pictures, and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Subscribe to one or two - or all of them if you really love us. You do really love us, right? Thanks for Listening!
Happy Birthday America! We're talking about how to get your non gaming friends into the hobby, maybe a day too late. Oh well! We also featured a special burger recipe from one of our Twitter followers!
Because of the ever-connected nature of the Internet, 21st century media has the opportunity to be dynamic, iterative and fluid in real-time. Posts on social media can be edited, collaborative documents can be edited by multiple parties simultaneously and even live-stream functions have incorporated comments from the viewing audience. The ubiquity of content iteration also carries over to the world of gaming. This week, we return to our “For Non-Gamers” series and welcome Tom Loughney to discuss downloadable content (DLC) in gaming. Because of modern connectivity, developers are able to add content (including missions, costumes and bug-fixes) to games after the fixed release date. How might consumers react if book chapters were released after a book was published? In what ways does DLC represent a chance for developers to extract as much profit as they can? Would a hard rule on the deadline of a media product produce more “complete” products without the safety net that DLC can provide?

In the 21st century, many content creation tools are increasingly accessible and user-friendly. As a result, platforms like YouTube have become especially popular as means of distributing music, news commentary and other video content. Fans of video games have gravitated towards "Let's Plays" which feature extensive playthroughs of games that are popular, fascinating or under the radar altogether. This week, Phoebe Lewis returns to help us examine the gray area surrounding Let's Plays. They represent content created by video game developers but altered by gameplay and additional commentary and information. Why do we judge those who watch gamers and not those who watch sports or other reproducible events? Do creators have a right to claim revenue and ownership of this new multimedia product? Is it an authentic means of advertising an interesting product? How can our understanding of video games as non-linear media be applied to creations like films and books which often have a straightforward means of consumption?

This week, Phoebe Lewis returns for the third entry in our series "For Non-Gamers". She watched through a series of videos on YouTube known as "Let's Plays," in which content creators will complete a video game while providing commentary, often humorous or insightful. In particular, she viewed a number of episodes from "StephenPlays," produced by Stephen Georg and his wife, Mallory. Let's Playing is a relatively young phenomenon, but draws millions of views on platforms like Twitch and YouTube. Is there something particular to video games that encourages ekphrastic work like this? Does commentary substantially change the source material? And how might Let's Plays offer a comfortable point of entry for those like Phoebe who do not consider themselves gamers?
This week, Phoebe Lewis returns for the second entry in our series "For Non-Gamers". She played through the critically-acclaimed success, Gone Home - a narrative exploration of a fictitious Oregonian family set in the summer of 1995. Because of her limited exposure to gaming as a pastime, we asked Phoebe about her initial impressions and discuss the similarities between the game, films and books which all contain similar storytelling elements. We also discuss the biases about gaming which this title helps disprove and how Gone Home helps model games as multimedia experiences and not as narrow entertainment. In what ways does this title illuminate first person experience as conveyed in video games? How do we conceive of the decorations and items in our houses as extensions of our families and our lives?
Gaming for Non-Gamers In this episode: After getting a question from a listener about how to get their spouse to play games, it got us thinking. There are a whole lot of people out there who don’t consider themselves gamers. But almost everyone plays games thanks to smartphones. So why don’t they identify as gamers? Is it because they were never introduced to them? Is is a negative cultural stereotype? One of the biggest hurdles is simply the controller. The number of buttons and the layout are super intimidating. Our suggestion is to introduce people to smartphone games because the interface is something almost everyone is used to already. Mobile games get around the controller issue. Find a gameplay mechanic or IP that interests you or the person who you want to introduce to gaming. Do they love Star Wars? Then maybe Star Wars: Angry Birds is the way to go. Do they like puzzle games? Try Two Dots or Candy Crush (seriously!). Do you enjoy strategic thinking? Well, Hero Academy and Bloon Tower Defense are perfect. One of our highest recommendations, however, is to try to introduce people to gaming using narrative games. Even if they’re not playing and just watching, they can see what games are capable of. Anything by Telltale games would be wonderful to start with, as would Firewatch, Bioshock, or The Last of Us. Even open-world games like GTA can help people see the immersion possible in video games. The one thing we get asked a lot is “How do I get my spouse to play games?” Our answer might surprise you. “Maybe you don’t?” Having separate hobbies can be a good thing, and if you can talk and listen about what each of you loves, it’s okay that your spouse isn’t a gamer. Void’s wife is a hardcore knitter, and he has maybe done 10 stitches in his life. But he still cares, listens, and understands when she talks about what she loves. While he isn’t going to be using the awesome new yarn or pattern, he can appreciate that it means something for her. The same goes for Beej’s wife. She is a woodworker, and while Beej wouldn’t trust himself anywhere near a tablesaw, he loves seeing the excitement on his wife’s face when she finds a new kind of wood with a particularly beautiful grain. Not everyone has to love the same stuff, but we should be respectful of other people’s interests. However, we do There are good on-ramp games like 80 Days on iOS/Android/PC and pretty much any Mario Kart game ever. If you want to give gaming a shot to see what modern gaming can do, we don’t think you can go wrong with those titles. We ask all the hard questions: What's the weirdest thing Batman's ever done? What will Hans Zimmer do now? What the hell's with all these Jungle Book movies?
Because of their relative youth as a type of entertainment, pastime and as a form of art, video games are often relegated to lower levels of appreciation or even ridicule. In this first episode of a new series, entitled "For Non-Gamers," we want to take a hard look at the criticisms people level at video games, as well as how and why they do so. When compared to media such as television, books and movies, why are video games discarded as wasteful when they can offer more interactive, thought-provoking and complex emotional experiences? We welcome Phoebe Lewis, self-proclaimed "non-gamer," to help us unpack some of these issues. In particular, we hope listeners who are unfamiliar with gaming as a medium will pay close attention to this series and engage our discussions thoughtfully. We also hope to bridge some of the cultural gaps between gamers and non-gamers. We would also like to thank Will Quam, Tom Hoefner, Alexandra Harmes, Ivan Lescanec and Mark Webster for their written contributions.
