Brett Morris (CBB World, Screw It We're Just Gonna Talk About The Beatles, a million other podcasts) joins me to talk about Ween's 2003 album "Quebec"! We go pretty long here, including a lengthy tangent about Radiohead.   Other Ween songs I recommended to Brett after recording: I'm In The Mood To Move, Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down), Roses Are Free, Voodoo Lady, What Deaner Was Talking About, Piss up a Rope, The Mollusk, I'll Be Your Jonny on the Spot, Waving My Dick in the Wind, Ocean Man, Exactly Where I'm At, Bananas and Blow, Gabrielle, Learnin' To Love, Your Party, Woman And Man. These were just intended as a broad sampling, obviously there are lots of other great Ween songs!

OCEAN MAN, TAKE ME BY THE HAND! After the colossal failure of 2017's theatrical cut of Justice League, the future of the DCEU looked to be dead in the water. However, that all changed when one year later, the long-overdue Aquaman film finally released, earning $1 Billion and becoming DC's biggest commercial success since the Dark Knight trilogy. However, the film itself was far from perfect, garnering lots of criticism for its undercooked script and characters, being more style-over-substance, etc. So, what do Alec and Brian think of it after all this time? Come watch with them to find out!

On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe listen to Bell's next pick, Ween's The Mollusk. Their sixth album, The Mollusk was the first album done in a traditional recording studio and with an expanded lineup, adding a drummer in place of a drum machine used on previous albums. Like the Audioslave album we covered a couple weeks back, the album cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson, who had previously done album covers for bands such as Pink Floyd. The album was a great influence on the creator of Spongebob Squarepants, who later requested a song from Ween for the show and featured the song Ocean Man on the Spongebob Squarepants Movie soundtrack. The album was well reviewed, with several publications including it on their year-end best of lists. Will this album take you by the hand and lead you to the land of sweet musical enjoyment? Come along and find out!

Don and Dawn mix up Christine's name all through the call which frustrates her. Following a beautiful rendition of Silent night by Dawn and Don, Christine hears Veritas' guitar and really gets into the singing mood. She sings “na na na na” [Give Me Some Sunshine] and then everyone sings Ocean Man. All while this is going on, Christine edits the HTML of the fake bank hiding the screen so it shows “Pc help” and fakes transferring $10,000 into the account. She uses cmd prompt to issue a refund, typing in an extra two 0's when Dawn types in 100. Christine grows increasingly frustrated and tells them she will lose her job and be behind the bars. She begins typing instructions in the address bar of chrome, typing “$500 gift card 4 pieces” before correcting it. Don and Dawn think this is absolutely brilliant and promise to cut the cards and Christine screams that they do not have to cut the cards. Don and Dawn call their son who goes to Best Buy to buy Google Play gift cards. They dutifully cut the cards up into tiny shards while Christine has a meltdown. Then, after realizing they didn't have to cut the cards, they piece them back together with tape and their son helps them redeem them in front of Christine.

Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!Jack was a small boy who was not very strong. In fact, the doctors had said he really shouldn t do many physical things. But Jack refused to accept that. His family spent the summers at their beach home in France, and he loved playing and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. He loved watching the ships move across the ocean, and he loved throwing stones in the water. Jack also liked studying machines and building small machines that really worked. When he was only 11 years old, he built a model of an ocean crane. When he was 13, he invented a small working electric car that ran on batteries. People w ere amazed! Shortly after that, home movie cameras began to be sold in stores and Jack saved his money to buy one. He loved making films and dreamed of having his own movie making company someday. Water, machines, and movies. Those w ere Jack s favorite things, and it was his use of those three things that eventually made him a HERO. Jack was actually named Jacques Jacques Cousteau. He was born in France during the early 1900s. That small boy who was not very strong became an excellent underwater swimmer, and so that he could stay underwater for long periods of time, he invented the Aqua-lung, a machine that would allow people to breathe and stay underwater. It also allowed him to take his movie camera in a water-tight case dow n to the ocean floor and capture on film what people had never been able to see before. Eventually Jacques Cousteau did start his own movie making company. He won three academy awards for his undersea films and he wrote books about sea life. Jacques Cousteau was the first to show people the beauty of the ocean and the importance of taking care of it. Jacques Cousteau became a HERO. That's what I know about the beginning of This Hero, and I know that YOU Can Be a Hero TOO! Dear Parents, After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at http://www.thecharacternetwork.org/Testimonials (www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials) This program, The Beginning of a Famous Hero™ is used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!™ in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment. Today we have an exciting interview and exclusive sneak peek into Mommyheads' brand new album “Age of Isolation” with lead singer/guitarist and producer of the album, Adam Elk! Mommyheads have created some excellent music over the years, gaining attention in the 90s indie rock scene before grunge, coming up alongside bands like Weezer and Radiohead. There was seemingly only room for a few indie rock groups for the likes of MTV and VH1, and if you weren't those chosen few to break through the top 40 charts, it was easy to be overlooked. Ween, for example, experienced a lot of lukewarm responses to their music for being quirky and inconsistent with genre, not being fully appreciated until the proliferation of Spongebob Squarepants, a universe infamously inspired by their album “The Mollusk” (check out our ep about it here: https://anchor.fm/albumconcepthour/episodes/Ween---The-Mollusk-w-Alexandra-Derderian-euaf08/a-a55itrf). Mommyheads is one of those bands. They had their moment in the sun with their self-titled album released on Geffen Records, but as the radio got grungier and the beginnings of the rap-rock were peaking through, the labels were shifting tides. Mommyheads saw the writings on the wall and decided to go their separate ways in 1998, but in 2008, they were brought back together by original drummer, Jan Kotik's tragic death to cancer (in December 2007) and their subsequent tribute show to him. They enjoyed playing together again so much that they picked up where they left off and another decade or so later, they are still at it. Although they have yet to have their “Ocean Man” moment, they're continuing to make good music, and we definitely recommend you check out “Age of Isolation” at http://mommyheads.bandcamp.com!!! Not to yank our own dingdongs, but it isn't often that Code Lyoko and RttP are both in top form in the same episode.  You want action, comedy, high-stakes middle school dramedy? Skidbladnir delivers. You wanna hear Mary, Ben, and David (but mostly Ben and David) break into an impromptu slapfight over Homestuck and wax nostalgic about the sticky horrors of puberty? Again, you've come to the right place. Of course, we also eulogize every millennial's unofficial sensei, Stephen Hillenburg, who passed away on November 26. There isn't anything funny about that. But, in his honor, we've cranked the SpongeBob puns and references up to eleven. Happy trails, Ocean Man. You were number one. === Questions? Comments? Hey there, fancypants! Welcome to the first episode of STAFF PICKS, a brand new series where Josh and Connor discuss an album they both love, one that you MUST check out. And what better way to kick off the series than talking about Ween and their sentimental masterpiece, 'Quebec'. Released in 2003, 'Quebec' tends to get overshadowed by their most conceptual work five years earlier, 'The Mollusk'. Y'know, the one with Ocean Man on it. Despite that album deserving all the praise it gets, the boys wanted to draw attention to the softer, more serious side of Ween. Let them take you by the hand and lead you to the land to find out why today's Staff Pick is their favourite in the band's discography, and how much the album tickles them pink while breaking their hearts. Although recorded before his passing, this episode is in dedication to Stephen Hillenburg (1961-2018). May he rest in peace.
