May 27th: Body of Anna Brown Found (Osage Native American Murders) (1921) Sometimes our show's short episodes make it difficult to cover more involved cases. Cases where crimes span decades and the victim count is well into the hundreds. Today's story is one of those historical cases. On May 27th 1921 the body of a young woman was found in the midst of multiple crimes happening against the Osage tribe in Oklahoma. Her death was just one of many. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osage_Indian_murders#:~:text=The%20Osage%20Indian%20murders%20were,place%20from%201921%20to%201926., http://www.nativepartnership.org/site/PageServer?pagename=PWNA_Killers_of_the_Flower_Moon&s_src=GoogleAds23KOTFM&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAivGuBhBEEiwAWiFmYTDvYnQGeTHK3-Vl3-RX-Qt3zqW7mzYo72pUkCL49cFUJGRHbwGbrxoC4A0QAvD_BwE, https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=OS005, https://www.history.com/news/osage-murders-reign-terror-husbands-guardians, https://www.pbs.org/filmfestival/films/osage-murders, https://www.vox.com/culture/23920002/killers-flower-moon-true-story-osage-murders-reign-of-terror-mollie-burkhart-what-happened Learn more about your ad choices. Faithspotting hosts Kenny and Mike review and spot faith reflected in Martin Scorsese's latest film, "Killers of the Flower Moon."  The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, and tells the true story of the "reign of terror" inflicted upon the Osage Indian population following the discovery of oil on the land they were sent to live following their ejection from Kansas. The film chronicles the murders and suspicious deaths of many members of the Osage population that was part of a plan to steal the "headrights" due them and their decendents.  Faith Themes Spotted: The power and corrupting nature of greed in th which the appetite power and wealth and wealth is limitless. Despite the Christian teaching that all persons are beloved children of God and therefore worthy of love from others, the reality of racism is that it dehumanizes and lables as "others" persons of different races, cultures and backgrounds on both the societal and individual levels.  The nature of evil is that it often presents itself through the apprearance of concern and words and acts of love and community.

In the final part of the Osage Indian Murders the trial commences, we hear accounts of the chilling testimonies and the legal battle that unfolded. The courtroom drama captivated the nation, exposing the dark underbelly of ambition and prejudice.     The trial involved several defendants, including local white settlers, who were suspected of involvement in the murders. These individuals were charged with various crimes, including murder, conspiracy, and corruption.     The trial took place in federal court in Oklahoma, and it began in 1926. The court proceedings lasted for several months, making it one of the longest and most high-profile cases of its time.     The prosecution was led by the U.S. Attorney's Office, working in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), particularly agent Tom White, who had been tasked with investigating the Osage murders. The trial exposed the extent of corruption and racism in the region at the time.      The trial had significant ramifications for the Osage community and the nation as a whole. It shed light on the exploitation and mistreatment of The Osage Nation and led to important reforms in the handling of cases involving crimes against Native Americans. Additionally, it solidified the authority of the FBI and showcased the agency's capabilities in handling complex criminal investigations.      The Trial of the Osage Reign of Terror is a haunting tale of greed, justice, and the pursuit of truth. The Pinkerton's National Detective Agency were who you called when the law wouldn't cut it. A number of agencies started following suit. The family of Mollie, the Whitehorn estate, and Hale all employed one of these investigators. When everything failed the Osage counsel sought the help of the Department of Justice. They were forced to pay for their own investigation. Even though they payed  around $300,000 to the Bureau of Investigation (The predecessor of the FBI) they still did not want to take the case. In the late 19th century, oil was found on land owned by the Osage people in Oklahoma. By the 1920s, this oil, as well as smart negotiating moves by the Osage, would make the Osage people “the richest nation, clan, or social group of any race on earth, including the whites, man for man.” Of course, this made the Osage targets of those who wanted their money. The FBI Story? More like The Boring Story: Special Agent Jimmy Stewart Harangues Drowsy Quantico Recruits. The FBI Story is a 1959 film from director Mervyn LeRoy starring James Stewart, Vera Miles, Murray Hamilton, Larry Pennell, Nick Adams, Diane Jergens, Jean Willes, Joyce Taylor, and Victor Millan.Oh, and let's not forget, this film introduces a sharp newcomer named J. Edgar Hoover, as himself! To be fair, Hoover should also get a producer credit, given that he had a lot of editorial control over the film. He even apparently demanded that his bud LeRoy re-shoot certain parts of the story, to make the FBI look better. Frankly, we're not sure that the entrenched, controversial bureau director succeeded as a script doctor. This film — based on a book by Don Whitehead — follows Stewart's clean-cut, constantly-complaining FBI Agent Chip Hardesty throughout his career. And his run at the FBI is as long and winding as this movie is long-winded. Thrill as Hardesty chews out his kids, deals with his wife's griping, and whines about his job. Oh, and also combats the Ku Klux Klan, investigates the Osage Indian murders, and tangles with rogues like John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kelly. Sounds cool? Well, somehow ... it's not.Listen to Áine and Kevin surveil topics like long run times, disapproving fathers, the Space Canine Patrol Agents, bad speeches, and David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send ominous broadcasts to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Kathleen opens boasting her love for Dolly Parton with a few Dolly quotes, and promotion of Dolly’s version of Led Zepplin’s “Stairway to Heaven”.Kathleen expands on her Episode 1 conversation about Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado as she reads a few lines from his 1997 book “Beyond The Horizon,” which includes predictions for the future. She shares that if she could have two experiences in her life, she would want to see the HistoryMiami Museum’s exhibit honoring Mercado, and also Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul museum in Mexico City.Fast Food From the Road: Kathleen confesses that after decades on the road, she’s just tasted her first Popeye’s famous chicken sandwich. She loves Taco Bell and KFC UNLESS they are a combo restaurant, which is also how she feels about Baskin-Robbins + Dunkin Donut establishments. Kathleen is completely disappointed in how mergers like this usually result in customers needing to beg for extra hot sauce, be subject to insane new menu items such as the KFC Donut Chicken Sandwhich, or be forced to accept the loss in quality of one of her favorite treats: mint chocolate chip ice cream (WHY isn’t it even green anymore?).Parental Update: Kathleen has a phone conversation with her mom and is warned to stay out of the “doughnut hole of health insurance.” Her dad is dominating his men’s golf league, but is the only player adhering to COVID-19 cart restrictions.Sports: Kathleen provides an update on her COVID-19 Sports predictions: an update on the surging cases in her St. Louis Cardinals’ locker room (whom she refers to as “dirty birds,” her predictions on the success of the NHL’s “bubble” Stanley Cup Finals and the NBA tournament. Kathleen reviews the NCAA football conferences that have chosen to opt out of the 2020 Fall season, and reminisces how she was first introduced to good college football when the Missouri Tigers were admitted into the SEC in 2012.Controversy: Kathleen discusses her thoughts on the Dixie Chicks transitioning their name to be The Chicks, and remembers where she was and the fallout of that band’s 2003 dissidence of then-president George W. Bush at a concert in the UK. She moves on discussing public figures whom she appreciates even though they have ideological differences, and how those differences probably wouldn’t be known without social media. Kathleen includes actor Jon Voight and Jerry Falwell Jr, and the repercussions when Falwell Jr. recently posted a picture of himself on a yacht with his pants open.Lake of the Ozarks: Kathleen discusses her home at the Lake of the Ozarks, which has a new fame thanks to the Netflix series “Ozark,” but most recently made international news as local lake bars surged with people, resulting in mass spreading of COVID-19 cases. Kathleen reviews the history of the Lake, growing up as an Osage Indian at School of the Osage, and the difference between the “pre-flood” and “post-flood” communities. She shares tales of the famous Party Cove, as well as a family story of what her brother traded for outboard motor oil on a particular summer afternoon in the gauntlet. Weather Obsession: Kathleen confesses to being a complete weather junkie, and her obsession with weather and The Weather Channel. She talks about how hurricanes are named and the history of hurricane names, as well as her preferences in weather apps such as the Weather Channel app versus Weather Bug.What to Watch This Week: Kathleen is fascinated with the documentary “Project Nim,” which is the story of Nim Chimpsky, a chimpanzee who in the 1970’s became the focus of a landmark experiment to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised like a human child. She shares her opinions regarding the content, especially her hatred of a particular professor in the movie.Mystery of the Week: Kathleen provides her opinions on the Maracoxi, which are mysterious South American sasquatches.

In the 1920s, the Osage were considered the richest people per capita in the world, thanks to oil wells on their land. But in the early 1920s, about two-dozen tribal members were killed mysteriously. Author David Grann delves into those deaths and the conspiracy behind them in his book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the F.B.I.”Host Geoff Norcross spoke with Grann about the Osage murders, how the investigation into the deaths shaped the early years of the FBI and why we’re so fascinated by true crime stories. This conversation was recorded in front of an audience at First Congregational United Church of Christ during the 2017 Portland’s Book Festival.

Beginning with a barrage of loud sound effects â guns firing and tires squealing â this intrusive introduction led to the popular catch phrase "came on like Gang Busters."The series dramatized FBI cases, which producer-director Phillips H. Lord arranged in close association with Bureau director J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover insisted that only closed cases would be used. The initial series was on NBC Radio from July 20 - October 12, 1935. It then aired on CBS from January 15, 1936 to June 15, 1940, sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive and Cue magazine. From October 11, 1940 to December 25, 1948, it was heard on the Blue Network, with various sponsors that included Sloan's Liniment, Waterman pens and Tide. Returning to CBS on January 8, 1949, it ran until June 25, 1955, sponsored by Grape-Nuts and Wrigley's chewing gum. The final series was on the Mutual Broadcasting System from October 5, 1955 to November 27, 1957. It was once narrated by Norman Schwarzkopf, Sr., former head of the New Jersey State Police. The radio series was adapted for DC Comics, Big Little Books and a 1942 movie serial. The 1952 Gang Busters TV series was reedited into two feature films, Gang Busters (1954) and Guns Don't Argue (1957).
