It's Friday, April 19th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus North Korea's hatred of Christians North Korea's hatred of Christianity has condemned hundreds of thousands of Christians to death and left remaining believers fearful and hiding in the shadows, reports International Christian Concern. As the world's worst police state, North Korea crushes dissent and free expression. The majority of Christians are probably killed outright when captured, with the percentage possibly as high as 70%. Those not killed outright are thrown into the gulag, also known as the fiery furnace, never to return. Torture and starvation define the North Korean gulags. Located in remote mountains with extremely tight security, escape is almost impossible. Prisoners live on the edge of starvation, yet the system demands that prisoners farm, manufacture, raise animals, and do heavy mining and lumber harvesting. Romans 14:12 reminds us of the long-term view. Each of us, including these North Korean militants, “will give an account of himself to God.” Learn more about one defector named Shin Dong-hyuk, in an article at Reason.com, based on the book Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West. Not surprisingly, Open Doors lists North Korea as the #1 most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Israel retaliates against Iran Early Friday morning local time, Israel launched missiles in a retaliatory strike against Iran, a senior U.S. official told ABC News. The Iranian Mehr News Agency reported that flights to Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz had been suspended as of Friday morning, reports The Jerusalem Post. The missile launches follow Iran's attack last Saturday, where the country sent a volley of more than 300 uncrewed drones and missiles toward targets throughout the country. All but a few were intercepted. Google fires 28 workers for protesting $1.2 billion Israel contract Google has fired more than two dozen employees for protesting its $1.2 billion contract to provide the Israeli government and military with cloud and artificial intelligence services, reports NBC News. Twenty-eight people were fired after nine employees were arrested Tuesday night following a sit-in at the company's offices in Seattle, New York and Sunnyvale, California — including one nine-hour sit-in at Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian's office, according to the group that organized the demonstration called No Tech for Apartheid. High school student suspended for “illegal alien” phrase Using the term "illegal alien" is reportedly an infraction worthy of suspension in a North Carolina high school. Appearing on The Pete Kalliner radio Show in Charlotte, Leah McGhee described an incident in Central Davidson High School in Lexington where her 16-year-old son, Christian, was suspended for three days last week over that term, reports Fox News. LEAH: “The teacher was passing out the vocabulary words. One of the words was ‘alien' to which Christian raised his hand and was called on by the teacher. Christian said, ‘Like space or illegal aliens who need green cards?' As soon as Christian said that one of the students in the class took offense and responded by saying that he was going to beat Christian up. “The teacher called administration because there was a disturbance in class. Administration came down, spoke with those boys in the hallway. Christian said. ‘I did not mean this in an offensive way' and the other student said he was just joking when he says that he was going to beat Christian up. It was resolved in the hallway.” Nonetheless, the principal insisted that the phrase “illegal alien” was racist. LEAH: “He was very taken aback why it was deemed racist. ‘Illegal alien' is a term that Christian can look up on the dictionary. It is a term used in our federal code. And it is a term that is heard frequently on many news broadcasts.” The teenager told the Carolina Journal, "I didn't make a statement directed towards anyone; I asked a question. I wasn't speaking of Hispanics.” Planned Parenthood killed 390,000 babies, got $700 million of tax money Planned Parenthood performed over 390,000 abortions while receiving nearly $700 million in tax funds, according to its latest annual report for 2022-2023. Naked man, claiming to be female, arrested at Planet Fitness And finally, a man, pretending to be a woman, was arrested for indecent exposure to a minor on April 4th around 6:30pm after he walked around naked in the women's locker room at a North Carolina Planet Fitness, reports The Christian Post. Christopher Allan Miller, age 38, was reported to police as harassing women at the Gastonia Planet Fitness in North Carolina prior to entering the locker room. The woman who called 911 told the dispatcher that the man who entered the women's locker room was “completely naked.” DISPATCHER: “And is that man still there?” 911 FEMALE CALLER: “Yeah, he's still in the bathroom. It's a man, but he says he ‘identifies' as a woman and he won't leave the restroom. But he's just walking around and he won't leave.” On its website, Planet Fitness explains that all gym members “will have access to restroom and locker room facilities that correspond to their self-reported gender identity to the extent permitted by applicable law.” WSOC-TV talked with Betty Brice, a Planet Fitness member there, who took issue with the biological man being allowed in the women's locker room. BRICE: “I think a woman should be able to into the woman's bathroom without a man coming in and saying that he's transgender.” Thankfully, Miller was subsequently arrested and charged with indecent exposure to a minor. This North Carolina incident comes after an Alaskan Planet Fitness revoked Patricia Silva's membership after she posted several videos online about her encounter with a trans-identifying man shaving his face in the women's locker room. The woman claimed that a 12-year-old girl, covered only by a towel, was inside the locker room while the man was present. Late last month, Planet Fitness Co-Founder Michael Grondahl criticized the gym franchise's policy of allowing men in women's locker rooms during an interview with the Libs of TikTok founder Chaya Raichik. GRONDAHL: “How we got here today is unfathomable to me. I had realized that there was a[n] opportunity in the fitness industry to create a gym chain that would be primarily aimed at the beginner and the people who were intimidated by fitness centers and people who couldn't afford the cost. “Back in '97, we came up with Planet Fitness, the ‘judgment-free zone.' And now you fast forward to what's happening today. Judgment-free zone means that if you're a man, you can use the women's locker room. Just insane!” Isaiah 5:20 declares, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, April 19th in the year of our Lord 2024. Patricia Silva's Planet Fitness membership in Fairbanks got cancelled. Her crime ?Reporting on a male who was shaving in the female locker room. She took a photo of him in the locker room and made a video in the parking lot that went viral. In light of the incident catapulting into social media, Planet Fitness stock dove, members cancelled their membership in droves and once again, we're at a cultural moment where people still believe the Emperor has clothes on.I'm honored to have this conversation with Patricia on I'm Glad You Said That today because we cannot remain silent and we shall not live by lies. As importantly, as Patricia brings up in our chat, people who identify in this manner are made in the image of God. They need truth and they need love and counseling. Planet Fitness is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Last month...Planet Fitness revoked the membership of Patricia Silva from Fairbanks, Alaska...after she publicly stated that she wasn't comfortable sharing a locker room with biological men. Planet Fitness received backlash for their response...and their policies led to another incident in North Carolina at the beginning of April. We discuss the current backlash with Planet Fitness...and question if Planet Fitness could become the next Bud Light. We criticize Planet Fitness for their policies allowing biological men to use the women's locker room. We also explain why the boycott of Bud Light lasted months...and why it's unlikely the same will happen to Planet Fitness.

The inclusivity guidelines of Planet Fitness, a prominent gym chain, have stirred contentious discussions and induced pleas for widespread boycotts. At the crux of this controversy lies the unique policy adopted by the gym, which sanctifies the freedom of its members to select locker rooms in alignment with their gender identities. To safeguard against misuse, Planet Fitness implemented a rule which states, 'Should it be ascertained that any member is dishonestly asserting a false gender identity, the provisions include expulsion and potential termination of membership.' The discussion around this sensitive topic has been revisited due to a recent episode involving Patricia Silva. During her visit to a Planet Fitness outlet in Alaska, she was taken aback to find a 'male individual in the women's locker room'. She captured the incident in a video, which she subsequently shared online along with presenting her grievance to Planet Fitness. Unexpectedly, her membership was later annulled by the gym. The recurring question of locker room access based on gender identity is not a new one. It was highlighted in 2015 when Yvette Cormier's membership was discontinued by Planet Fitness, subsequent to her expressing concerns about sharing the locker room with a biological male identifying as a transgender woman. This occurrence transpired at one of the gym's branches in Michigan, causing Cormier to institute a legal proceeding against Planet Fitness. As a result of the lawsuit, the Appeals Court of Michigan ruled in favor of Cormier, asserting that Planet Fitness violated the Consumer Protection Act. The verdict attributed this violation to Planet Fitness' failure to adhere to their contractual promise of a private women's locker room to Cormier. Consequently, this episode has ignited further debate concerning the privacy, safety, and rights of both cisgender and transgender individuals frequenting public spaces such as the gym. These ongoing discussions, layered with conservative viewpoints, have fostered calls for boycotts against Planet Fitness. The individuals supporting the boycott argue this policy jeopardizes the safety of females by enabling self-identified transgender men to utilize women's facilities, potentially exposing them to threats. This wave of boycotts is primarily aimed at nudging Planet Fitness into reconsidering its policies with an emphasis on superior safety measures and privacy for all patrons without explicitly negating its objectives for transgender inclusivity. The actions and conversations borne out of this scenario underscore a larger, societal disagreement on how to strike the right balance between safety provision and respect for the rights and varied identities of transgender people. An incident in 2023 further illustrates the tension between these aspects. A biological male was taken into custody after he exposed himself to a 15-year-old girl in the female locker room of a Planet Fitness gym. The man, who was later arrested, allegedly approached the minor while she was taking a shower, horrifying her with his complete exposure before subsequently traumatizing her until she had no choice but to leave the locker room. At this point, it remains under investigation whether this deplorable incident was a consequence of the gym's inclusive policy, the individual's gender identity, or a separate factor altogether. In defense of its policy, Planet Fitness insists the rules were formed as part of a grander initiative to foster an inclusive and judgment-free zone that extends uniform acceptance to all gym members. They argue these policies align with the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, providing a safe haven for all genders, and facilitating their mission to pioneer inclusivity in fitness environments. Despite the ensuing backlash and demands for boycotts, Planet Fitness has gained support from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and other similar institutions. Supporters commend the gym's firm stance against discrimination and its stride towards creating an inclusive space for every person without exception. The ongoing uproar brings to light the intricacies of managing gender identity, privacy, and personal safety in public places. It reflects the wider societal quandaries that these issues present. How businesses like Planet Fitness navigate these competing interests and adapt their policies in the future remains to be seen. Public places such as gyms are confronted with the difficult task of finding a balance between inclusivity and personal safety. Society as a whole grapples with varying opinions and morals, all which impact our perception of situations like these. Inclusivity often means considering and accommodating for a wide range of individuals and their personal experiences or identities. As businesses like Planet Fitness continue to navigate this complex landscape, it's crucial that the conversation remains open and respectful. Boycotts and public criticism are part of the democratic process, but dialogue should continue to ensure the best decisions are being made for everyone involved. The impact of these debates on future policies and practices in businesses and public spaces remains to be seen. We all play a crucial role in these conversations, as businesses and individuals alike are responsible for educating themselves and taking part in respectful dialogue. Elegance is learned, my friends! Or will Venny revert back to his wing motif? Will Bishme ever be okay with just one piece? Has Jamall learned to drape and THEN eat? Will Tessa make yet another outfit about her parents? The designers practiced elegance in restraint. We had some classy disasters and some well-tailored breakthroughs. An epic week deserves an epic title dedicated to the iconic Nina Garcia, Editor-In-Chief of Elle Magazine! Epic titles indeed. This week, Hernease split the podcast in two to honor the momentous occasion of a double network broadcast of Project Runway and to embody how she's been feeling about how to cover it all! This week, we welcome Hernease's friend and fellow enthusiast, Patricia Silva, onto the pod to dive into all things gazar, Thailand non-sense, what is a royal ball, why did they freak out over 2 days, where is swatch and we miss Tim Gunn. Even though we covered a lot, we indeed were unable to get to a lot. Leave your thoughts with us on Facebook and Instagram. We know you have lots and we want to hear them! Lyall Harris is a book artist, writer and painter who lives and works in Charlottesville, VA, and Florence, Italy. Lyall's artwork has been exhibited in more than one hundred solo and juried group shows and recognized with over twenty awards. She has been the recipient of fellowships at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, NALL Foundation in Vence, France, and San Francisco's Grabhorn Institute. Lyall is also the co-founder and co-editor of The Sigh Press literary and art journal in Florence, Italy. Meeting Places/Luoghi d’incontro is the collaborative work by Lyall and Florence, Italy-based book artist and printmaker Patricia Silva. After having met in Florence, Lyall Harris and Patricia Silva embarked on a series of twelve collaborative book art projects since 2014.The artists set constraints for the process, both of materials and time, which forced them to work in an immediate, intuitive and exploratory way. The varied work addresses issues and histories from their shared and layered perspectives as artists, mothers, daughters, wives, and expats in a changing and complex environment.
Patricia Silva talks with Pamela Sneed, an American poet, performance artist, actress, activist, and teacher. When i first read Pamela Sneed’s Imagine Being More Afraid of Freedom Than Slavery, my mind was still reeling from the graphic imagery of the Rodney King beating by police. Years later, Pamela published Kong, and by the time of our interview in 2016, America is again facing the consequences of its embedded racism. Racism is not just an exclusive US problem, but the relationship to racism here is very specific. Swirling in the media imagery at the time of our interview in July, was a story about a 4-year-old who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, and whose parents were inevitably met with racist comments. Once again the image of a black or brown body harks back to an othering shaped by the public dialogue of another era: that of an undomesticated animal. I spoke with Pamela about these two books, her trips to Western Africa in the 90s, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, and other influential artists and moments that shaped Pamela’s foundation as poet and performer.
Patricia Silva talks with Buzz Slutzsky, an American artist, writer, and curator who is really, really funny. Buzz’s videos contain a kind of humor that is enjoyed all the more because it’s never an irresponsible jab. Even when Buzz makes fun of themself, it’s playful. I first saw Buzz’s work at the Mix NYC Experimental film festival: "Religious Beliebs," a video about a pop-culture savvy Anne Frank being obsessed with Justin Bieber, much like any other contemporary teenager. This reimagining of Anne Frank’s adolescent was tender, insightful, and enjoyable. A year later, after an exhibition at the Los Ojos gallery in Brooklyn, I saw another video, "Clothes Feelings," about the role that our clothes have in how we shape our self-esteem and self-perceptions. In October of 2016, we had this conversation in Buzz’s studio.
Patricia Silva talks with Nina Felshin, an American independent writer, curator, and activist. Nina’s work consistently addresses political urgency, lived experience, and imagination. In September of 2016 we visited an exhibition on the Bowery which sparked a topic that we had to continue later. That conversation is today’s encounter. Nina talks about the publication of her first book, But Is it Art? The Spirit of Art as Activism, and we discuss two photographic projects that were relevant at the time of our conversation: Omar Imam’s photographs of Syrian refugees as published in the New York Times, and Phil Collin’s How to Make a Refugee video at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
