In this new episode, Tim Pilleri and Lance Reenstierna speak with Worcester State University archives librarian Ross Griffiths about the mysterious Bennington Triangle disappearances of Vermont and the disappearance of Paula Welden on December 1st, 1946. Paula Welden was last seen on the afternoon of December 1st, 1946. She left the campus that afternoon after telling her roommate she was going for a hike. Several hikers reported seeing her on the Long Trail, just off Route 9 near Glastenbury Mountain. She was reported missing by her roommate the following morning, after she did not return to campus. An extensive search of the area did not show any signs of Welden. Investigators from New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut assisted in the investigation, due to limited police services in Vermont at the time. Numerous theories were investigated, but no conclusive outcome was ever determined. Paula Jean Welden lived in Bennington, Vermont. The 18-year-old went for a hike on the afternoon of December 1, 1946. No one is sure what in the world happened after she left Bennington College campus that day. Eyewitnesses became unreliable. Police started to question if any of them even saw, gave a ride to, or talked to Paula Jean after she left her dorm, or if it was only someone who matched Paula's description. While on a hunting trip on Glastenbury Mountain, 74-year old Middie Rivers splits off from his son-in-law, but he is never heard from again and an extensive search effort fails to find him. Over the next five years, four other individuals – 18-year old Paula Jean Welden, 68-year old James Tedford, eight-year old Paul Jepson and 53-year old Frieda Langer – all vanish within the same general area and most of the victims are never found. This leads to speculation that the cases might be connected or that something supernatural is involved in their disappearances, so the area becomes known as “The Bennington Triangle”. During Paula Welden's sophomore year in college, she decided to finally venture out and explore North Bennington's portion of the Long Trail in Vermont. She set out on the afternoon of December 1, 1946, and would never be seen again. Her body has not been found to this day, and no evidence or leads have come to light. However, she wasn't the first or last person to go missing without a trace in the area, leading to it being nicknamed the Bennington Triangle.

Paula Jean Welden was an American college student who disappeared while walking on Vermont's Long Trail hiking route. Local sheriffs were criticized for errors made in the investigation, which led to the creation of the Vermont State Police. Weldon's fate remains uncertain, and was one of several unexplained disappearances in the same area at the time. Precisely what area is encompassed in this hypothetical "mystery triangle" is not clear, but it is purportedly centered on Glastenbury Mountain and would include some or most of the area of the towns immediately surrounding it, especially Bennington, Woodford, Shaftsbury, and Somerset – once moderately thriving logging and industrial towns. Paula Welden was the eldest of four daughters of the well-known industrial engineer, architect and designer William Archibald Welden (1900–1970) and his wife Jean Douglas (born at Mount Kisco, New York, 1901; died at Venice, Florida, 1976), née Wilson, of Brookdale Road, Stamford, Connecticut. Employed by the Revere Copper and Brass Company, W. Archibald Welden was the designer of many familiar household utensils, as well as stylish cocktail shakers and other objects. Paula Welden was a 1945 graduate of Stamford High School. In 1946, Welden was a sophomore at Bennington College in North Bennington, Vermont. Her college dormitory was Dewey House, one of the older dormitories on the college grounds, and which remains standing to this day. One day, Welden resolved to find and walk a portion of the Long Trail, located a few miles from the campus. She knew of the famous trail but hadn't yet had an opportunity to hike it. Bennington Vermont was a quiet, comfortable place to live without much incident or crime. Robberies, vandalism, murders and even petty crime were almost non-existent. Disappearances, however, mysterious disappearances, were more common. Each year between 1945 and 1950 someone had vanished under mysterious circumstances. Victims ranged from an eight year old boy to a 74 year old hunter. In 1947, however, the most famous disappearance occurred sparking the formation of the Vermont State Police.
