Episode 256: From Chaos to Calm: Managing Stress and Anxiety for Emotional Resilience - Part 3Welcome to Part 3 in our 5-part Emotional Resilience Series of 2023. I hope you've listened to Part 1 & 2. If not, here's a little background: I joined an emotional resilience group a few years back. There was a physical therapist, a composer, a nurse, a home economics teacher and me, a Realtor. We did not know each other before hand, and we were doing this course on-line because it was during Covid. This group was put together by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in an effort to support people in learning emotional resilience. The class focused on learning and practicing spiritual and practical skills to better care for the body, mind, emotions and relationships, and everyone took different things from the sessions, because we're all at different places on the path with what we needed. This was a 188 page 10 week course that I've pulled from and I hope these will support you in your own quest for choosing emotional resilience skills you can work on to better support your emotional work. TODAY I HAVE included some clips from a mental health discussion I had with KATHERINE REYNOLDS, A Marriage and family therapist who has shown up in all our episodes so far; and parts of a discussion I had with Brigham Haines, host of the Consider Everything podcast, a podcast about mental health….Take from this episode what resonates with you, that you may navigate your life with a bit more resilience. One step at a time. This episode - Part 3 - is all about Managing Stress and Anxiety for Emotional Resilience. Stay tuned for stories and insights from professionals.Let's put a few things out on the table. The first is a reasonable look at stress. Stress is a buzz word in our culture. We're going so fast, we're stressed out. Some see it as a badge of honor, an indicator that they are movin' and shakin. But for some it's gone off the charts and shifted into a debilitating anxiety.Let's dissect this a bit. Stress, in an of itself, is a normal part of life. It is how the brain and the body respond to any demand - a problem to be solved at work, an important decision you need to make - the right amount of stress helps you focus reach goals, protect yourself. Stress - in the right doses, can be an important part of functioning well. When does it get to be too much? Well, when stress becomes uncontrolled worry, or perfectionism, or a predominant fear that thIngs won't go well, that you won't be good enough to solve that problem at work, it can cause anxiety. Anxiety, or a feeling of excessive worry or nervousness can cause serious barriers for us. It doesn't fade when the situation is taken care of. It builds. I asked Kathryn Reynolds about her thoughts on stress and anxiety and she gave some definitions and ideas. Here are her thoughts:Tune in to hear Kathryn's thoughts. So, comparison can be stressor. Let's look at perfectionism, because this thought error is a big contributor to anxiety as well, and ties into comparison. Perfectionsim is the belief that if we are not perfect in everything, we are a failure and not good enough. Perfectionism is not a sign that you do things well, it is an inner belief that if you don't do things perfectly that you are unacceptable. Obviously, since no one does things perfectly, this is a terrible waste of time. Tune into the podcast to hear what Brigham Haines has to say on this subject.Kathryn confesses to being a recovering perfectionist and she has some great insights on how it isolates us through false connection. Here's our conversation:The podcast has all the clips from our visiting...

On the outside looking in, many would assume that ADHD and Perfectionism would be polar opposites. Where ADHD is a disorder that deals with hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, and difficulty with focusing, Perfectionism is most commonly associated with requiring a high level of attention to details. However, despite their nuances and differences, there is a strong relationship between having ADHD and being a perfectionist that many may not realize While it's admirable to want to do our best and strive for academic, social and professional success, many folks with ADHD go beyond this desire to do well. They create unrealistic standards of success, compare themselves negatively to neurotypical friends and focus too much on the end result and not the process of getting there. There are several helpful aspects of perfectionism that assist individuals with ADHD to get started and keep going on tasks and projects. You want to achieve a personal standard, create a piece of work or express themselves with pride and satisfaction. Perfectionism also contributes to the productive side of worry. It helps people by encouraging planning and fostering initiation such as doing tedious work, getting to work on time or remembering to charge your phone. But, perfectionism also limits people with ADHD. The damaging aspects of perfectionism include: Self-criticism  (negative self-talk)Rigidity (not completely right means failure)Fear of disappointment (self or others)Avoidance of failure (not trying because effort won't earn desired result)Sensitivity to feedback (defensiveness)Discouragement/depression (low self-worth due to incomplete goals) A word of caution - the perfectionism-procrastination loop often reflects an entrenched pattern of thinking and behaving, accompanied by strong emotions. Owning the tendencies of ADHD, taking small steps, allows progress to take time, and there will be setbacks along the way, so it's best to adopt the approach of chipping away at it gradually.

Let's be honest...we all procrastinate and find it hard to find motivation to a mundane project or day to day ""tasks" ....so we put off long, complex or boring tasks. What is procrastination?Procrastination is the delaying or postponing of the beginning or completion of tasks. This can happen even when the person knows that the consequences of this will lead to unpleasant or negative consequences.Procrastination is also known as a short-term mood repair. The discomfort we feel about a task is so strong that we naturally want to avoid our in-the-moment negative feeling.Putting off a task gives us immediate relief so, essentially, we then feel rewarded for.Procrastination Costs More Than Just ProductivityThere are some pretty big costs resulting from procrastination: It is internally troubling, it can lead to problems with insomnia, our immune system, and gastrointestinal disturbances. It puts us in a state of chronic stress, low life satisfaction, and poor health behaviors. Chronic stress can lead to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Procrastination can also erode personal relationships and job performance in the workplace. Overall, procrastinating has pretty destructive effects on our mental and physical health and well-being.Is procrastination a sign of ADHD?Fact: Nearly everyone procrastinates at times, particularly for very difficult or uninteresting tasks. Approximately 20% of people are chronic procrastinators - there are many people without ADHD who procrastinate. It's all in the Exectutive Brain, and lack thereof. People with ADHD who lack critical executive functioning skills (the ability to memorize and retain information) are more likely to procrastinate.  How does procrastination differ between people with and without ADHD and why do people with ADHD procrastinate? There are many reasons why people may procrastinate. The reasons can range from a fear of failure, perfectionism, feelings of depression, task aversion and executive functioning deficits. Deficits in executive functioning are the most common reason why people with ADHD have difficulty with procrastination. To complete a task, especially one that needs to be done over time, such as a long report or project, there are many skills that are needed to do this that revolve around these executive functions.

Kayleon gave some insight on her journey by grace, not perfection. Learning to take advice and tips without allowing it to alter who she is. That included her business name starting from a blog she did in middle school. This is the ultimate example of coming with what you have. Ask yourself these questions:Are you credible? What are your beliefs and values?Determine what defines you. There are some key tips that help you as you come into your own in this industry. It can go back to your days on the playground or in Kindergarten. Looking for acceptance leads to saying yes in moments when you should say no. It also makes it difficult for you to adjust because you don't want to let anyone else feel uncomfortable. Remember that you are the walking brand in your speaking and writing. That brand goes beyond the website and the business cards. This is where coaching comes in because they are able to give you a different vantage point. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and under pressure, maybe you’re trying too hard to be perfect. Always focusing on others can add to your anxiety. In this episode of Woman Worriers, host Elizabeth Cush and her guest, Sharon Martin, LCSW, talk about how perfectionism can fuel anxiety—and what to do about it.

In this episode I am talking about Perfectionsim. Pretending to have it all together benefits no one. In fact you’re creating a facade that cannot be maintained and then when you inevitably fail at maintaining this position, look, or character you’ve created you open the door to shame. Listen to hear how to go from trying to be someone to allowing yourself to be the best version of you which is more than enough.

Glenn and Tom are joined by listener and licensed therapist Dr. Wendy to discuss a BYU article on Perfectionism (yes, it is intentionally misspelled in the title, cuz that is so incrdbly hillaryous) and to pitch an idea for a possible new series that may or may not be the best thing since self-slicing bread.

On June 4, 2015, the first weekly episode of the Get Out of Your Own Damn Way Podcast aired with me sharing a bit of my story and how I got in AND out of my own damn way. Since then, I’ve interviewed guests from 8 countries across 4 continents around the world to find out how they have learned to get out of their own damn way too. For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Krylyn Peters. I’m known as “The Fear Whisperer,” and my mission is to help female entrepreneurs and want-repreneurs tame their fear, embrace their greatness, and get out of their own damn way so they can create their mission-filled, heart-centered, soul-inspired business. This is the third episode of my one-year anniversary series, where I’m sharing what I’ve learned from my podcast guests this first year. Today I’m going to share Step 3 of 4 to Get Out of Your Own Damn Way and Embrace Your Friggin’ Greatness Already. If you missed me sharing about Step 1, head on over to krylyn.com/krylyn-com50 or step 2, head on over to krylyn.com/krylyn-com51. You might want to download the special worksheet I created to go along with this episode, “Accept Yourself to Greatness.” You can use it to dive in a little deeper into step 3. [et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_9] Step 3: Be Yourself You’d think that knowing yourself and accepting yourself would be enough to fully embrace your greatness and get out of your own damn way. But you’d be wrong. A HUGE theme that came up as I interviewed my podcast guests was that of following the path we’re meant to take. We sometimes stay in a box without even realizing it – the box of the “good employee,” or the “good partner,” or the “good mother.” In other words, we’re playing that damn GOOD GIRL role we were cast in long ago, and letting it play out in every area of our lives. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying a good or great job, relationship, or family. But what I hear a lot is that while it may be a fantastic situation on paper, it just isn’t matching our vision for our lives. We long for more. Something’s missing. We’re being called to a higher purpose. And for many of us, that calling doesn’t go away simply because we’re enjoying our lives. What happens is that if we ignore the call, our lives begin to fall apart, making it less a choice we’ve made than an answer to a call we ignored for far too long. Not being yourself can look like: Having a really good life or job but not really being happy or satisfied Trying to fit in a box of what is expected rather than what we truly want Lusting after other people’s lives Talking ourselves out of “going for it” because of what others might think The path to true greatness involves being who you are. That means giving up the good-girl, people-pleasing nonsense that was ingrained in so many of us. [et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_9] Here’s one way to shed that role: Let your light shine. I’ve been categorizing different profiles of my clients and students for a while now, and I have to say the one where we hide in the shadows and don’t own our value is one of the biggest ones I’m seeing these days. I call it Wallflower Syndrome. Remember at the junior high dance those girls standing against the wall waiting to be asked to dance? Key word waiting. How many of us are waiting for the time to be right, enough money to be in the bank, circumstances to be perfect, and the universe to line things up just so in order to START. It doesn’t even matter what you’re waiting to start. The point is…PERFECTIONSIM is keeping you from shining. So what if things aren’t perfect? So what if you’re working full-time? So what if you weigh more than you want? So what if you’re juggling a million balls right now? You are NOT your bank balance, your weight, your excuses. You are destined for greatness and need to embrace that reality so you can stop feeling so miserable, dissatisfied, and unfilled,
