"I'm always chasing that ADHD thing: whatever it tells me to do, I just do it," John Gourley of Portugal. The Man told me. This episode hit hard. I used to be a middle school special education teacher. I taught kids with severe learning disabilities, and most also had severe ADHD. A big misconception is that people with ADHD can't focus on anything, when in fact the opposite is true: they focus on everything. "ADHD is a driver of my process," Gourley says, and as you'll hear he harnesses it to write some pretty amazing songs. Portugal. The Man's latest EP uLu Selects Vol. #2 is out now.

This week's episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Feb. 7th, 2025, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Beloved composer, musician, and iconic actor PAUL WILLIAMS joined us to discuss the film we screened that night, PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, as well as his impressive and long career in film and music. Paul talks about his experiences working with director Brian De Palma, juggling acting and composing songs for fellow actors William Finley, Gerrit Graham, and Jessica Harper, his stylistic influences for writing the soundtrack, the joy in playing a bastard like Swan and even how Phantom eventually found an audience with the help of some dedicated Winnipeggers. He also shares fascinating stories about his prolific work output, including composing for Jim Henson, how Burt Reynolds got the idea to put him in Smokey & The Bandit, writing songs for the Carpenters, Barbara Streisand & Ishtar, meeting songwriting deadlines while touring with Liza Minelli, how it felt when Phantom superfans Daft Punk reached out to him to collaborate on their music, and so much more. And as if that wasn't enough, there's also a live performance from Paul's latest collaborators, PORTUGAL. THE MAN, which includes a lovely Phantom Of The Paradise tip of the hat. Thanks again to all who donated their time and energy to make this beautiful event happen! Fox's musical journey sets her apart. Her debut single ‘Wild Heart' was officially featured on 'Love Island' on ITV, and after a few months, she came back with ‘Oops I am Dead', that made her shortlisted for the biggest festival in Europe - Glastonbury. In 2019 Joulie was picked up by Portugal The Man. to feature in the lineup of NOS ALIVE 2019. Her previous singles have landed on Spotify's prestigious 'New Music UK' playlist and she has garnered critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian. Continuing to grow exponentially, in 2022 she came bigger and stronger with her debut EP ‘Love is a Blessing' co-produced with British indietronica singer-songwriter and producer James Yuill (Catz'n'Dogs, Mousse T, John Summit). This mini album landed on London Live TV, BBC introducing and the charts of Polish Radio stations. 2023 connected Fox with her roots. Joulie had a pleasure to appear on Polish breakfast TV promoting her single ‘Unlovable' and perform at the oldest music festival in Poland ‘Jarocin Festiwal'. Her next mini album fully written in Polish is planned for Spring 2024. This doesn't mean that Joulie has stopped writing in English, and her listeners can expect an English release very soon. #Music #Poland #Interviews

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the frontman for a band that recently made a welcome return after a long absence, and the producer who helped him find the sounds and songs to do it: John Gourley and Jeff Bhasker. Gourley is the singer for Portugal. The Man, which started making music in their home state of Alaska back in the early 2000s before finding success and relocating to Portland, Oregon. The band has an impressive catalog that runs the pop gamut, and weirdly they hit it huge pretty deep into their career, with the 2017 song “Feel It Still,” which is still on pop radio six years later. Just this year, PTM finally released a new album, called Chris Black Changed My Life, which both mourns and celebrates the band's close friend, for whom it's also named. The album was also partly inspired by the daughter of Gourley and his bandmate Zoe Manville; Frances Gourley has a rare genetic disorder that's touched on in this chat. But the album and Gourley's story is by no means grim: He's all about celebrating life, as you'll hear on this track, “Summer of Luv,” which features some assistance from another recent Talkhouse guest, Unknown Mortal Orchestra. You'll also hear the fingerprints of producer Jeff Bhasker on that track. Bhasker is best known for co-writing and co-producing smash hits like Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Mark Ronson's “Uptown Funk.” He's one of several names that Portugal. The Man brought in to help realize Chris Black Changed My Life. The two talk about how that process worked, and in particular how Gourley is—unlike some songwriters—always happy to have more creative voices in the room. They also chat about which of them is a better singer, about playing at the Hollywood Bowl, about Gourley's life-changing jaw injury, and about Gourley's daughter Frances and the challenges they face. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to John Gourley and Jeff Bhasker for chatting. Over the four seasons of The Load Out music podcast, we've had a variety of artists on the show that have ranged from Rock-and-Roll Hall-of-Fame inductees like John Oates, Steve Cropper and Chris Hillman; to Grammy winners, alt-country stars, longtime record executives and noted rap producers. On the latest episode, we welcome an up-and-coming band from New York City that's a little bit rock, a little bit pop, and a little bit electronic music—a very different twist for our listeners. Rebel Kicks—comprised of talented, multi-instrumentalist brothers Anthony and Steven Babino—have shared stages with the likes of the Foo Fighters, Blink-182, Mac Miller, Iggy Azalea, Incubus and more. The band's new EP features the well-received singles “Silhouette” along with “Electrophoria,” a hard-hitting, groove-centric track inspired by the recent growth of artificial intelligence. The band drew its name from a line in the song ‘Feel It Still' by the band Portugal. The Man—"I'm a rebel just for kicks"—and have gone on to draw comparisons with Grouplove, Portugal and The Killers. Welcome to the Babino brothers!
Evan and Eric hit the mics to review Portugal. The Man's ninth studio album Chris Black Changed My Life. Can it top the insane hype around Woodstock and standout track "Feel It Still"? Well, the lead single on this one, "Dummy," was featured in a Taco Bell ad. Is that good or bad? You decide! Portugal. The Man tracks previewed in this episode include: "Dummy" "Summer of Luv (featuring Unknown Mortal Orchestra)" "Champ (featuring Edgar Winter)" Next up, Eric revisits The Bearded Mack and shares his thoughts on the company at this point in time and selects his favorite scents from their Beard Oil Sample Pack. Note: The Icy Mack scent was not available when Eric ordered his sample pack. But he tried this scent previously, and it's pretty enjoyable. The Beard Mack Sample Pack Scents Ranked The Gamblin' Mack (Leather & Frankincense) The Deadwood Mack (Tobacco, Musk & Leather) The Corner Mack (Citrus Cologne) Mad Mack (Tobacco & Bay Leaf) The Roaring 20's Mack (Barbershop) The Ravager Mack (Grapefruit & Patchouli) The Command Mack (Fresh Citrus & Mint) Tropical Storm Mack (Mango & Lime) The Sleepwalker Mack (Lavender & Vanilla) Finally, the boys discuss Evan's recent decision to quit drinking and Eric rates the Non-Alcoholic Chocolate Milk Dark Brew from Untitled Art, which has a wide selection of N/A brews.
