But everyone gets their start somewhere, and for Ellen that was on Nashville's Broadway in their legendary honky-tonks, led by a singer who was equally legendary: Shelly Bush. In Ellen's six-part series Girl in a Hurry, we learn more about Shelly, but also about the ecosystem that makes country music run: for every star headlining a stadium tour, there are hundreds of working-class musicians putting in the hours and the miles in the dreams of getting there. This is Shelly Bush's story. Search for Girl in a Hurry to listen to the of the series! To learn more about how the podcast was made, you can read my interview with Ellen.

It is a pleasure to welcome singer, songwriter, and guitarist Kyle Daniel to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Kyle Daniel's music is a unique blend of classic Southern rock and modern country, a fusion that appeals to a wide range of music lovers. His blue-collar sound resonates in rock clubs, honky-tonks, and everywhere in between. At the heart of this distinctive sound is a guitar hero, storyteller, and songwriter who has earned his audience the old-school way: by touring relentlessly, from dive bars in Tennessee to the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, and hitting key UK festivals along the way. Kyle, a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, began his musical journey at a young age, playing in bars before he could legally drink. His passion for music was undeniable, as he followed in his parents' footsteps to become a skilled guitarist. His early success, winning the Kentucky Blues Challenge at 17 and placing in the finals at the International Blues Challenge at 18, was just the beginning of his inspiring journey. Later, Kyle began writing songs that showcased not only his fiery fretwork but also his songwriting chops and vocals. His debut EP, Kyle Daniel, was recorded in a single day and released independently in 2018.Even without a label's help, the self-titled record found critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone praising it for mixing "the gravely twang of Steve Earle with Chris Stapleton's range, plus bigger hooks." After spending several years as a sideman for other artists, Daniel finally claimed his share of the spotlight, brewing up his melting pot of hard-hitting American roots music. On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Kyle Daniel spoke about his lessons from Anderson East, Bob Seger, and Brandy Clark and his debut album, Kentucky Gold.Let's connect on social media! Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond
Brandi Carlile's knack for uplifting the musicians she loves is exemplary. After her own hard-earned ascent to fame over the course of seven studio albums, Brandi started to turn her sights to producing albums for artists she deeply admires, including Tanya Tucker who she's been on Broken Record with in the past but also Brandy Clark. Then there's Joni Mitchell—who, thanks to Brandi's encouragement—has recently made a glorious return to performing live. Brandi's passion for the projects she works on is infectious. The latest is an EP she produced for 18-year-old singer/songwriter Tish Melton called, When We're Older. Over the course of the five-song collection, Tish pulls influence from artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. Tish, whose mom is the New York Times bestselling author Glennon Doyle, is teeming with talent on her EP, which includes heartfelt songs that expertly capture a wise-beyond-her-years self assuredness. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Tish Melton and Brandi Carlile about their creative partnership and the impermeable sense of self Brandi has found in both Tish and Joni Mitchell. And Brandi teases her upcoming collaboration album that she calls “monumental,” plus she talks about why she thinks Beyonce might be country music's saving grace. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite songs from Tish Melton and Brandi Carlile along with all the tracks mentioned in this episode HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brandi Carlile: Live From My Couch! Episode 77. Double Date with Brandi & Catherine Carlile! Brandi Carlile is an eleven-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter, performer, producer, #1 New York Times Bestselling author and activist – one of music's most respected voices. Aside from the production of her own work, Carlile has been increasingly in-demand as a record producer – helming albums by Tanya Tucker, Lucius, The Secret Sisters, Brandy Clark, and Tish Melton. Tanya Tucker's 2019 album While I'm Livin', co-produced by Carlile with Shooter Jennings, won the GRAMMY for Best Country Album. Last year saw her production talents excel with new album projects from Brandy Clark and Joni Mitchell – both of which took home wins at this year's GRAMMY Awards – as well as her cover of “Home” for the last season of Ted Lasso and her version of “Closer To Fine” with wife Catherine Carlile for Barbie The Album (Best Weekend Ever Edition). Carlile has collaborated closely with Joni Mitchell, Elton John, The Highwomen, Soundgarden, Alicia Keys, Marcus Mumford, Dolly Parton and more. When not on the road, she spends time in her home studio in rural Washington state where she and Catherine raise their two daughters, Evangeline and Elijah. Tish Melton: 18-year-old singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who wears her incredibly perceptive heart on her sleeve. “As a songwriter, I've realized you can just tell stories,” she says. “They don't have to be big, dramatic moments. Personally, I learned how to write songs by simply sharing my journey and feeling how I naturally do.” For her debut EP When We're Older, she has teamed up with eleven-time GRAMMY® Award-winning artist Brandi Carlile, who is a mentor to Melton and joins as producer. Their musical chemistry is undeniable, rooted in mutual respect, shared taste, and an appreciation for good songwriting and musical catharsis. Inspired by the clear-eyed storytelling and indie rock influences of Taylor Swift and boygenius, Melton chronicles teenage relationships – from the lonely pain of first love, unrequited love, friend crushes, joyous friendships, and the pain, fear and excitement of becoming an adult. She tells these stories as she's living them, with a sharp eye for detail and lyricism that brings them to life. Her work has received praise from Variety, V Magazine, FLOOD, and Magnet Magazine. When We're Older is a bold and generous opening statement from a newcomer who is destined to share her stories, and it's available to stream or download now. As an aspiring artist, Brandy Clark found herself in love with the craft of songwriting, as some of her peers were working on their image and presentation. She became a top songwriter in Nashville, contributing songs to performers like Kacey Musgraves and LeAnn Rimes. Being a lesbian also complicated any desire to be on the public stage in a conservative industry. But she eventually emerged as a solo artist, partly under the tutelage of Brandi Carlile, who acted as producer. Carlile has ushered her toward the sound of Americana—a “dirtier” aesthetic than Nashville's, Clark says, and a more inclusive community, which is sometimes mocked as “country music for Democrats.” Clark met recently with Emily Nussbaum, who recently wrote about the culture war in country music, to discuss her recent album, which has been nominated for no fewer than five Grammy Awards. It originally had the title “Northwest,” reflecting Clark's Washington roots, but she scrapped that to avoid confusion with North West, the child of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and released the album as “Brandy Clark.” Of her four solo records, “this is the most authentically me.”Clark performed “Buried” and “Pray to Jesus” live in our studio.

In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012. As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more. A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood). Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more. Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself.
