John David McAfee was a British-American computer programmer, businessman, and two-time presidential candidate who unsuccessfully sought the Libertarian Party nomination for president of the United States in 2016 and 2020. In 1987, he wrote the first commercial anti-virus software, founding McAfee Associates to sell his creation. He resigned in 1994 and sold his remaining stake in the company. McAfee became the company's most vocal critic in later years, urging consumers to uninstall the company's anti-virus software, which he characterized as bloatware. He disavowed the company's continued use of his name in branding, a practice that has persisted in spite of a short-lived corporate rebrand attempt under Intel ownership. McAfee's wealth peaked in 2007 at $100 million, before his fortunes plummeted in the financial crisis of 2007–2008.Wikipedia Born: John David McAfee, September 18, 1945, Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England Conspiracy theory A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy by sinister and powerful groups, often political in motivation, when other explanations are more probable. The term has a negative connotation, implying that the appeal to a conspiracy is based on prejudice or insufficient evidence. A conspiracy theory is not simply about a conspiracy; instead, it refers to a hypothesized conspiracy with specific characteristics, such as an opposition to the mainstream consensus among those people who are qualified to evaluate its accuracy. Conspiracy theories resist falsification and are reinforced by circular reasoning: both evidence against the conspiracy and an absence of evidence for it are re-interpreted as evidence of its truth, whereby the conspiracy becomes a matter of faith rather than something that can be proven or disproven. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/conspiracies-and-mysterie/support

Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 353, originally published in December 2013. John McAfee is in the news, as he is trying to create an NSA-proof gadget used for private internet browsing, called "Decentral." McAfee, original creator of McAfee Antivirus software was born in the United Kingdom and raised in Salem, Virginia, United States.  McAfee was employed as a programmer by NASA's Institute for Space Studies in New York City from 1968 to 1970. From there he went to Univac as a software designer and later to Xerox. as an operating system architect. In 1978 he joined Computer Sciences Corporation as a software consultant. Later, while employed by Lockheed in the 1980s, McAfee received a copy of the Pakistani Brain computer virus and began developing software to combat viruses. In 1987 McAfee founded McAfee Associates, a computer anti-virus company. He was the first to distribute anti-virus software using the shareware business model. In 1989, he quit Lockheed and began working full-time at McAfee Associates, which he initially operated from his home in Santa Clara, California. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1992, and McAfee resigned from the company in 1994. Two years after McAfee Associates went public, McAfee sold his remaining stake in the company. Network Associates was formed in 1997 as a merger of McAfee Associates and Network General. This company later became Network Associates, a name it retained for seven years until it was renamed McAfee. Now a subsidiary of Intel corporation, McAfee remains today as one of the largest anti-virus companies in the world. Other business ventures that he founded included Tribal Voice, which developed one of the first instant messaging programs, PowWow. In 2000, John McAfee invested in and joined the board of directors of Zone Labs, makers of firewall software, prior to its acquisition by Check Point Software in 2003. In August 2009, The New York Times reported that McAfee's personal fortune had declined to $4 million from a peak of $100 million, the effect of the global financial crisis and recession on his investments. Beginning in February 2010, McAfee started a new venture in the field of bacterial quorum sensing. His company QuorumEx has its headquarters in Belize and is working towards producing commercial all natural antibiotics based on anti-quorum sensing technology. In 2013 McAfee started a new company, Future Tense Central, to produce a secure computer network device called the D-Central. McAfee Associates achieved early success as the creators of McAfee, the first commercial antivirus software, and the business now produces a range of enterprise security software. The company was purchased by Intel in 2011 and spun back out in 2017 with TPG Capital owning a majority stake, though the software has always borne the McAfee brand name. McAfee's wealth peaked in 2007 at $100 million, before his investments plummeted in the financial crisis of 2007–2008. This interview is also a video interview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqOeTqCULT8&t=539s ***** Warning there is some Explicit Language in this Episode ****** John McAfee is the world renowned software security pioneer who also founded McAfee Associates. His wealth peaked in 2007 at about a $100 million. After leaving McAfee Associates, John also founded companies like Tribal Voice, QuorumEx and Future Tense Central. As we can see it seems that he learned a thing or two about diversifying his investments. He has been involved in leadership positions in the companies Everykey, MGT Capital Investments and Luxcore. After he took a beating in the financial crisis of 2007–2008 McAfee liquidated his assets and moved his operation to Belize. Where John surrounded himself with a harem of young women. Life in Belize became very controversial to say the least before he would flee the country.  His political leanings are libertarian, he has advocated the decriminalization of cannabis and also bringing an end to the war on drugs. McAfee's also believes in having non-interventionism in foreign policy. As well as having a free market economy that does not redistribute wealth, but that also upholds free trade. John first announced that he would seek out the office of President of the United States in the 2016 presidential election. He consistently polled among the top three presidential candidates for the libertarian party.  In the end he would lose out to his fellow rivals Gary Johnson and former Unstructured guest Austin Petersen McAfee also later got involved with a mysterious tech company called MGT Technologies. The company invested in games, cybersecurity, but was also a small drugmaker. He would leave and start becoming a huge proponent of Bitcoin. He has also made some of the most bullish claims to date. This includes stating that Bitcoin will hit $1,000,000 by 2020. And if not – he will eat his di**. It's not all smooth sailing for McAfee as he has now being sought by US tax authorities since January 2012. he wrote in a July 19 tweet: John announced that he had fled the country and was “living in exile” on a boat. This was because of felony charges handed down by the Internal Revenue Service. “My crime is not filing tax returns – not a crime. The rest is propaganda by the U.S. government to silence me. My voice is the voice of dissent. If I am silenced, dissent itself will be next.”    John's Twitter: https://twitter.com/officialmcafee   And don’t forget to support the podcast by subscribing for free, reviewing, and sharing.   New Livestream https://youtube.com/erichunley   Web: https://unstructuredpod.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/unstructuredp Facebook: https://facebook.com/unstructuredp Instagram: https://instagram.com/unstructuredp Join the Facebook group: fb.com/groups/unstructured

John has been quite involved in the crypto space, but most recently has launched a decentralized exchange 'McAfeeDex'. He believes centralized exchanges are the weak point of the crypto industry. Although John doesn't expect miracles at first, he believes decentralized exchanges are the only way forward.

“Liberty is the domain of the Sovereign. Servitude the domain of the collective.” -Yukio Mishima John McAfee (c. 1945) is a larger than life figure who requires little introduction. He is presently living in exile while simultaneously making a bid for the White House as a current U.S. Presidential candidate (despite claims that he has zero interest in becoming president). He also ran for President in 2016. Known as something of a sexual deviant, McAfee is both a libertarian and a libertine in every sense of the word. Former NASA programmer and founder of the computer software company McAfee Associates, Inc., McAfee first came to prominence after developing the world's first commercial antivirus software program simply called “McAfee.” McAfee has become a major advocate for cryptocurrency as a way to remove taxation and financial power away from corrupt global governments. He has gone so far as to promise that if Bitcoin doesn't reach the value of $1m by the end of 2020, he will eat his own dick. In 2012 McAfee was suspected of murder by Belizian officials after his American expatriate neighbor was found dead of a gunshot wound. McAfee quickly fled Belize after being sought for questioning by Belizian authorities concerning the murder. He was subsequently arrested for illegally entering Guatemala. McAfee shortly thereafter faked two heart attacks in order to avoid deportation to Belize, and was successfully deported to the United States. In early 2019, McAfee announced that he was on the run from federal authorities and living internationally on a boat following the convening of a Grand Jury to indict him, his wife, and four of his 2020 Presidential campaign workers on tax-related charges. This past summer, McAfee and members of his entourage were arrested while his yacht was docked in the Dominican Republic on suspicion of carrying high-caliber weapons and ammunition. They were held for four days before being released. McAfee has claimed to have had several attempts made on his life by various persons and authorities over the years. McAfee has stated on several occasions that he has 47 biological children. He has authored several books about yoga and recently released his own personalized marijuana strain “Dank Minge.” A forthcoming film titled “King of the Jungle” focusing on McAfee's life in Belize is currently in production. Join us for this special Thanksgiving episode of THE EXILE HOUR with John and Janice McAfee!

Sofa King Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2019 103:03

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about one man with a hell of a resume. He was accused of murder. He has been an international fugitive more than once. He had live-in 18 year old prostitutes stay in his mansion and give him scat sex. He ran for president. He hired gang members, doubled his fortune recently on Bitcoin, started a secret rain forest drug lab, once ran a meditation cult in the mountains, and is a tech mogul who created the most successful anti-virus program the world has ever known. His name is John MacAfee, and his story is almost too wild to be believed. He was born in the UK to a British mom and alcoholic and abusive American GI father. McAfee was a bright child, and he did well in school, even after his father's suicide. He started working on computers when there barely was such a thing. In 1967, he started as a programmer for firms such as Xerox and Lockheed. In 1987, he discovered his first computer virus (literally the first ever), and he felt his calling. He created McAfee Associates the same year, and within 5 years, 67% of all computers were covered by his software. But, John McAfee was paranoid and a bit crazy. He was too unstable to become a Bill Gates or a Steve Jobs, and his company was equally bizarre. Wiccans chanted to nature gods in the lunch room. There was a sex contest in the office, and people had to Windex down random surfaces to get the sex off of them. The entire company was only 20 people, and it made a fortune. Eventually, it went public, and MacAfee was bought out since he was considered too radical, which, let's face it, he was. From there, his software became the horror show that we know today, and he moved around, settling in Belize. Once there, he started to become the island's dictator, like you do. He owned the police and the coast guard, and he paid for the experimental research of drugs derived from rainforest plants. He had 18 year old girls he turned into prostitutes live with him, and he hired known killers to patrol his property with guns. The federales tried to bust him but couldn’t make anything stick, and eventually, his island paradise was ended by a neighbor named Greg Faull. After a feud about beaches and dogs, Faull allegedly poisoned McAfee’s dogs. McAfee had to shoot them himself to put them down. A few days later, Faull was found dead from a gunshot wound to his head. So, did John MacAfee kill him, and if not, who do they think killed Faull? What do people named Cash Money and Mac Ten have to do with it? How did McAfee get out of Belize and into Guatemala? How did he convince Guatemala to deport him back to Florida? Did he rape his botanist to try and silence her? What led him to then run for president of the United states; how did he come to marry a South Beach hooker; why does he now live in Cuba, and what crimes is the US pursuing him for? Listen, laugh, learn. This week we talk about John McAfee. John was a talented computer programmer and developed a range of anti-virus software resulting in him starting McAfee Associates and becoming one of the biggest software companies on the planet.

"New vulnerabilities to networks are discovered and published on a daily base. With each such announcement, the same questions arise. How significant is this vulnerability? How prevalent is this vulnerability? How easy is this vulnerability to exploit? Are any of my systems affected by this vulnerability? Due to lack of global vulnerability data, answers to these questions are often hard to find and risk rating is even more difficult. As part of ongoing research, Gerhard Eschelbeck of Qualys, Inc. has been gathering statistical vulnerability information for more than two years. Those vulnerabilities have been identified in the real world across hundreds of thousands of systems and networks. This data is not identifiable to individual users or systems. However, it provides significant statistical data for research and analysis, which enabled Gerhard to define the Laws of Vulnerabilities. The Laws of Vulnerabilities is derived from vulnerability data gathered during the past 30 months from over five million scans of individual systems from global organizations. During this timeframe a collective amount of more than three million vulnerabilities - reflecting multiple levels of severity and prevalence - has been identified. Furthermore, the responses to external events (i.e. availability of an exploit or worm taking advantage of a vulnerability) have been studied providing valuable lessons for attendees on how to protect networks and systems from evolving threats. Gerhard Eschelbeck is a respected CTO, researcher and author in the network security field. He published the now well-known ""Laws of Vulnerabilities,"" the industry's first research derived from a statistical analysis of millions of critical vulnerabilities collected across thousands of networks over a multi-year period. Eschelbeck presented his findings before Congress at the hearing on ""Worm and Virus Defense: How Can We Protect Our Nation's Computers from These Serious Threats?"" His research has been featured at major security conferences including Black Hat, CSI, and RSA and in numerous media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, The Economist and others. Gerhard was named one of Infoworld's 25 Most Influential CTO's in 2003 and 2004 and is a significant contributor to the SANS Top 20 expert consensus identifying the most critical security vulnerabilities. Prior to joining Qualys, Eschelbeck was Senior VP of Engineering for security products at Network Associates, VP of Engineering of anti-virus products at McAfee Associates, and Founder of IDS GmbH, a secure remote control company acquired by McAfee. Earlier, he was a research scientist at the University of Linz, Austria, where he earned Masters and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and where he still teaches regularly in the field of network security. Eschelbeck has authored several papers on active security, automating security management, and multi-tier IDS. He is an inventor of numerous patents in the field of managed network security."
