Photo: Lifer inmates at Salem's Oregon State Correctional Institution connect with culture, family, and healing during the annual Many Nations Pow Wow. (Brian Bull) The power of a Pow Wow has been described as a collective heartbeat that draws people together. Celebrants often say they feel unity and freedom as they dance in a circle. Those elements are especially vital for those serving time at the Oregon State Correctional Institution in Salem, Oreg., but as Brian Bull of Underscore Native News and KLCC reports, for one day each year, inmates get to move to the rhythm of a rawhide drum with friends and loved ones. A soft breeze rustles the frills on Anthony Salazar (Apache)'s regalia. He describes its colors, as his wife, Stephanie, helps with final adjustments. “Colors are white, black, red, and yellow, which is the colors of the four directions. The green represents Mother Earth. All the regalia is connected to nature somehow.” Drummers gather in a circle, while other dancers fix their bangles and beadwork. A man with a microphone greets the crowd of visitors with a smile. “We're so glad you guys were able to make it. We are about to prepare to do our Grand Entry.” At first, you'd think this was just any other Pow Wow getting underway. However … “I’m in here for two counts of murder, and I got a life sentence. I’ve been in 24 years.” Salazar, like everyone else preparing to dance or drum, is a “lifer” at this medium-security, all-men's prison. “This is actually the first “Pow Wow where I've actually dressed up in regalia, and I'm going to dance.” He is thrilled to be part of the Pow Wow – and that his wife Stephanie is here. “This is my first one that I've been able to come to, very fortunate to be here. Means a lot.” As dancers gather for the grand entry, a red-tailed hawk soars above. It is a simple, but powerful symbol of freedom in a place where guard towers and checkpoints remind everyone this is a prison. Emcee Shawn Jeffers-Monro says it is great having his wife and other loved ones here once a year. “My mother was dying of cancer three years ago, and I was able to have this ceremony with her and these last rites, and be able to say goodbye to her. So this is that one time of year that we get to be together as a community, as a family, and kinda be free in a way.” One of the guests for this Pow Wow is Aliza Kaplan, a professor at Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland. She says she and some of her students have been invited to this event about five times. “Because we aim to really get to know our clients and what matters to them, and see them as more than people who have committed crimes.” No one here glosses over the fact that they are behind bars for serious crimes, and may not ever step foot beyond the prison gates, but many see the Pow Wow as a way to hold on to tradition and find worth, says inmate Nestor Diaz-Miller (Cow Creek Band of Umpqua). “I've dealt with suicidal thoughts and actions in my past, and being able to focus on this inipi, this sweat lodge and that drum, literally saved my life. It's given me something to believe in, something to hope in. It's such a special feeling, I can't describe it other than special.” The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is advancing several bills aimed at settling tribal water rights and funding water infrastructure across the West. During a legislative hearing last week, senators considered measures affecting the Yavapai-Apache Nation in Arizona and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians in California, along with legislation to strengthen the federal Indian Water Rights Settlement Completion Fund. Supporters say the bills would help fulfill the federal government’s trust responsibilities while providing greater certainty for Tribal Nations and neighboring communities. The measures now await further action by the committee and Congress. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. Efforts to encourage more Native Americans to vote are underway in more than a dozen states this year. Chuck Quirmbach reports on how things are going in Wisconsin, ahead of the state primary contests on August 11. The nonpartisan group Wisconsin Native Vote is about a decade old, and is now up to four organizers around the state. They have already been doing outreach at Pow Wows and a variety of other community events. Spokesperson and organizer Anne Egan-Waukau (Menominee) says a key message is that voting is a way to make sure Native voices are heard. “We tell people to vote for the Seventh Generation. That’s what really resonates with people, because our ancestors worked to make sure Mother Earth was clean and healthy for us. And, it’s our job to do that for our next seven generations. But also, it’s working to maintain our sovereignty.” Egan-Waukau says tribal sovereignty is an especially powerful theme for the Menominee, which only won back full tribal status in the early 1970’s after much activism and debate with state and federal elected officials. Still, this is not a presidential election year, and Wisconsin only has high-profile races for Governor, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the state legislature. Statewide voter turnout is expected to be down from 2024, but Egan-Waukau says there are some big problems, new and ongoing, likely to motivate tribal members to vote. “Like we had listening sessions and people came to talk to us about issues important to them, like data centers, the opioid problem we have on our reservations.” Egan-Waukau says she does encounter people who are cynical about voting and politicians, but she says she asks them do they really want to do nothing at election time. The Eklutna Tribe's Pow Wow and Potlatch happens only once every two years, but when it does, it draws hundreds of people to the village of Eklutna near Anchorage, as Rhonda McBride from our flagship station KNBA reports. The weekend of dancing, drumming, and feasting kicked off Saturday morning at the tribe's Pow Wow grounds. Aaron Leggett, the president of the Native Village of Eklutna, says what makes him most proud is that no one leaves hungry, because the tribe feeds everyone. “We'll have moose, various types of moose stew, and roast and fish, salmon. It's just sort of our way of really being open and good community partners.” Many also bring dishes to share. Leggett says the tribe had plenty to celebrate this year — including the groundbreaking for its long-awaited gathering hall, funded in part by the success of its new casino. The Chin’an Gaming Hall is in a temporary, modular near the Birchwood Airport. (Photo: Rhonda McBride) But more than anything, Leggett says, the gathering is a chance for Anchorage, Chugiak, and Eagle River to get to know their neighbors in the village of Eklutna. “There's certainly people that wouldn't necessarily, you know, when think of Eklutna, maybe they would think of the cemetery and the church but don't really have any sense of it. The Pow Wow, the Potlatch, really was our way of increasing awareness to the community and building that up.” The theme for this year's event was “Restoring our River — 97 Years Later”. It highlighted the tribe's efforts to restore the natural flow of the Eklutna River and its wild salmon runs. Treaty of Greenville depiction, 1795, artist unknown. On this day in 1795, the Treaty of Greenville was signed, ending the Northwest Indian War. The agreement between the U.S. and several Tribal Nations ceded much of present-day Ohio to the U.S., marking a major turning point in federal-Tribal relations and westward expansion. Ritu has started her e-commerce journey as an Etsy seller over ten years ago. She is the CEO of PPC Ninja, a software tools and services provider managing Amazon ads for six, seven, and eight figure brands. As someone who is really passionate about data science and advertising, Ritu has dozens of PPC mastermind programs, workshops, and webinar and has even trained hundreds of Amazon sellers on PPC. She has shared her knowledge on over 100 podcasts, webinars, blogs and conferences including the Prosper Show, Global Sources Summit, Powwow, the Billion Dollar Seller Summit, and many more. So with that introduction, Ritu, welcome to the show.Ritu 00:00:50 Josh, thank you so much for having me. I am super excited to be here and to talk all about PPC today.Josh 00:00:58 What is what would you recommend from the hundreds of accounts that you viewed. The sellers that are using your platform and software. What do you see right now is a healthy balance of PPC sales to organic sales for an established brand.Ritu 00:01:14 Yeah, and I think it's very dependent on the category. Some categories are so saturated that 60, 40, 60 PPC and 40% organic is becoming the norm. For example, just to give you an example from the pet space just so crowded, like especially if you're, you know, selling any kind of like, dog toys or, you know, pet products and things like that. there's so much competition there that, you know, 50 to 60% coming from ads is pretty normal. Like, there's no chance you can compete with mainland Chinese brands with just organic. They've already got 20,000 reviews and more like, how can you, you know, how can you even compete? Begin to compete with that, right? So the ads become your only way, your only chance of being seen. And that leads to the 6040 ratio. But in some of the other categories where it's a little bit more, you know, difficult for anyone to imitate you or to provide services that, you know, require human, you know, intensive work like support or whatever, like after the fact, it's probably still okay to get like 40% from, ads and 60% from organic.Ritu 00:02:37 So let's say research heavy products or products that require or have a good margin. Right? Have a good margin, that are not so easy to imitate those categories. You're still seeing quite a healthy ratio. So it totally depends on the category. I would recommend just making a note of that number today and just watching it over time. Because just baseline it and then you'll see whether it's going up or down.Josh 00:03:04 Yeah that's good input. And on that note, while we're talking about metrics, what do you see as a healthy tacos percentage for an established brand. And I'm sure it changes based on what category you're in. For sure, if you're supplements, you're playing a much longer term game and you're playing on subscriptions and repeat customers. But let's say for an average brand, right, that has, you know, one time customers more often than not. What do you think is kind of the ballpark tacos number to ensure that they're they're healthy and competitive across the board?Ritu 00:03:39 Yeah. So that's such a great question.Ritu 00:03:41 Really $1 million question. So okay, here's what I think of tacos. Now your tacos is going to be different at different stages of your journey. So you know when you are starting off your tacos, needs to be competitive with the market. You can't be looking at tacos as a profitability metrics. It's more of like, what's the maximum I can afford to spend in order to get this business off the ground? But then as time progresses and you start to see, you know, revenue coming in, flywheels working, everything is going fine. Then you start to tweak the, you know, the tacos target a little bit to kind of make it more profitable. so I think, it's a kind of, it's a calculation that I, look for at three points. So I look at spend. I look at revenue and I look at profits. Right. So initially, when you're just starting off, you know, even the smallest amount of spend will result in a drop in profits. You know, you're starting off.Ritu 00:04:54 You're spending money on ads. All of that is eating into your profits. But at a certain point the the spend as you increase your ad spend, it's actually going to generate revenue for you. Right. So what's the sweet spot when those two lines kind of cross over? that's the target tacos that is going to shift with, with, you know, the maturity of your of your account. So, we do say that the guideline is we don't want to spend more than 50% of net margin for your for your advertising. So I guess if you can keep that just general rule of thumb in mind, you should be fine. so no more than 50% of net margin. eventually you want...

Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: December 06, 2021Weird Darkness moves through four shades of the unexplained in this episode: the unseen voices and strangers that talk people out of crimes and catastrophes, the demon that lived under two sisters' bed in Texas, the 1928 witch-killing that gave a Pennsylvania hollow its name, and the still-contested death of Marilyn Monroe. It opens with a run of first-person accounts pulled from Reddit, each describing the moment something unseen stepped in to stop a crime or a catastrophe. A burglar hiding in the closet of an elderly woman's house watches a ghostly old man pat a departing paramedic on the back, then feels breath on the neck and a voice ordering the intruder out. Middle-schoolers creeping through their darkened school are warned off by a voice none of them claims, and they avoid a library that proved to be wired with a silent alarm and motion detectors. In California, a fourteen-year-old abandons a car-theft job a mile from the pickup, spooked by a rising sense of dread, and later learns the vehicle was bait in a police sting that swept up everyone else sent after it. A pickpocket lifts a wallet clean off a stranger, only for the man — blind, sunglasses raised — to calmly ask for it back. Threaded among them are a blown tire that derails a despairing teenager's suicide plan, church doors that lock the instant two thieves reach for them, and a Hobby Lobby shopper whose five stolen pieces of balsa wood seem to trail straight to a table saw and a flesh-eating MRSA infection. From there the episode turns to a listener named Atreada, who shared a room and a bed with her older sister in SunRay, Texas. For a week the bed shook hard enough to slam against the wall and wake the whole house, blamed each night on two children supposedly roughhousing. On the fourth night a hand rose from the gap between bed and wall as an evil laugh filled the room, and on the last night the sisters aimed a flashlight and saw the thing climb out and bolt — an old man in rags, barefoot, with glowing eyes, talon-like fingers, broken teeth, ears jutting at odd angles, and thin transparent strands hanging from an otherwise bald, corpse-like head.Next comes the true story behind Spring Valley County Park in York County, Pennsylvania, a place once called Hex Hollow. In 1928 a Powwow folk-magic practitioner named John Blymire became convinced he was cursed, and a witch called Nellie Noll — the Marietta River Witch — named Nelson Rehmeyer as the source. To break the hex, Blymire needed a lock of Rehmeyer's hair and his copy of The Long Lost Friend, an 1820 spellbook by John George Hohman. On November 26, 1928, Blymire and two accomplices, John Curry and Wilbert Hess, beat Rehmeyer to death in his home and tried to burn it down; the house refused to burn, which locals took as proof of his power. Blymire and Curry drew life sentences and Hess ten to twenty years, and the surviving hex house opened as a museum in 2007 — its story helping to inspire horror novelist Brian Keene and Shane Free's 2015 documentary on the killing. The episode closes with the death of Marilyn Monroe, found nude and lifeless in her Brentwood home in the early hours of August 5, 1962, a telephone in her hand and empty pill bottles on the nightstand. The official verdict was probable suicide by barbiturate overdose, but Sergeant Jack Clemmons, the first officer on the scene, found no glass or water for swallowing some sixty pills, no vomit, and housekeeper Eunice Murray running laundry while the body lay cooling. Thomas Noguchi's autopsy turned up lethal levels of Nembutal and chloral hydrate in her blood and liver, yet not a trace in her stomach. Witnesses placed Attorney General Robert Kennedy at the house that day and again near 10 p.m., tied to rumors of a red diary detailing her affairs with Robert and President John F. Kennedy and referencing a plot against Castro. A competing account, advanced years later by a Court TV investigation, holds that her psychiatrist Ralph Greenson gave her a chloral hydrate enema to wean her off Nembutal, unaware that her internist Hyman Engelberg was still prescribing it, and that the fatal drug interaction — not the Kennedys, and not her own hand — is what killed her.
An almost forgotten dance is making a comeback on the powwow trail. This weekend the Great Lakes Woodland style dance is one of many styles you'll find at the Wáhkóhtowin Powwow on Treaty One territory in Winnipeg. Rosanna hears from Anishinaabe dancer Ryerson Whetung about the hopping style that is set to a very fast double beat, as well as the floral work and otter turbans that bring this style's simple but stunning regalia to life.
