In this podcast episode, we are chatting about quite a complex disorder called Pyrrole Disorder. It is a condition that isn't that well-known in mainstream medicine, but we are seeing more and more of it in clinical practice. Pyrrole disorder is an imbalance in the body that affects the synthesis of haemoglobin and causes the body to overproduce a substance called HPL. HPL goes on to deplete the body of crucial nutrients, primarily zinc, B6, and magnesium. We often see Pyrrole Disorder linked to conditions such as anxiety, OCD, ADHD and many mental health conditions. For this episode, I am joined by naturopath, nutritionist, and herbalist Ross Walter, who specialises in complex cases and is passionate about helping people with their health through nutrition, lifestyle advice, and the use of holistic modalities, and education. In this episode, Ross and I dive deeper into pyrrole disorder and we discuss: More about pyrrole disorder and its causes; What happens to the body of someone with Pyrrole Disorder; We discuss the symptoms and range of conditions associated with pyrrole disorder and what to look out for;How to test for pyrrole disorder, and what the tests can tell us;What the key treatment considerations are for pyrrole disorder;Plus much more. Episode Links:Check out Ross Walter's website here. Read our blog post on pyrrole disorder on the Natural Super Kids podcast here.

Today on Biology of Trauma is our final interview with William Walsh as we continue our conversation on copper excess, undermethylation and Pyroluria. We discuss how difficult it is to identify and treat neurochemical imbalances correctly.  Many mood disorders are being misdiagnosed as trauma. Environmental stress can exacerbate a neurological condition but ignoring the biological aspect keeps patients suffering longer.    During pregnancy a woman's copper levels increase, causing anger, irritability and in many cases, postpartum depression. Untreated, copper levels may never return to normal, permanently changing the disposition of the mother. In children however, violent tendencies develop and are often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder; the treatment of which will never balance the copper levels causing the rage.    In cases of undermethylation we now know that it causes low serotonin but the standard protocol is still to administer methyl folates which can dangerously lower serotonin; in extreme cases patients have become so depressed they commit suicide. In each section, you will see how important individualized care is to the recovery of any patient. Medicine is still catching up to the research but the stakes are high and we should all be fighting for personalized protocols.   Key Takeaways: [1:45] Copper excess can cause postpartum depression and violent behavior in children [2:20] 95% of postpartum depression cases have high copper levels even long after giving birth  [5:50] Gradual doses of Zinc and Vitamin B6 can correct copper levels, ideally before pregnancy [8:00] Copper excess in children can mistakenly be diagnosed and treated as psychiatric issues [11:40] Testing Zinc, copper and ceruloplasmin levels to verify if you have copper excess [14:00] Undermethylation around the world are increasing & what makes it worse [17:20]How methylated your DNA is indicates undermethylation better than the MTHFR gene [22:12] Folate is a strong methylator and will dangerously lower serotonin in a depressed patient [28:10] Pyroluria is a correctable disorder that indicates high oxidative stress  [29:35] Normalizing Zinc and B6 will cure Pyroluria, left untreated Schizophrenia may develop [32:40] Violence declines, if a child's neurochemical imbalance is addressed early in life [35:30] Sociopaths have smaller amygdala and cannot recognize pain in people    Find more from Dr. Walsh: https://www.walshinstitute.org/ https://www.facebook.com/walshresearchinstitute https://twitter.com/WalshResearch https://traumahealingaccelerated.mykajabi.com/3-most-common-biochemical-imbalances Interested in learning more about the brain? As a child Christine read a book on how to cure various health issues by drinking fresh vegetable juices. This inspired her to resolve some of her own health issues using food as medicine. In her late 20s, Christine became involved in a variety of business endeavors and began to burn the candle at both ends. The result – an acute case of severe hepatitis leaving her unable to work. After the initial shock, she recalled how using food as medicine had helped resolve her childhood respiratory health issues and had also provided her with the vigor that initially supported her early work ethic and creativity. Christine returned to wellness principles and began refining various approaches to fit her individual genetic predisposition, health goals and diagnosis. Not only was the hepatitis resolved within weeks (much to the amazement of her doctor), Christine returned to work with more energy, inspiration and creativeness than ever before. Unfortunately, cancer had not finished with Christine, and despite being extremely fit with a very healthy diet, her genetic make-up eventually came to the fore with a tumor in her own bowel. Whilst focusing on chronic illness, cancer survival and private clinical therapy, Christine also became motivated to create a comprehensive yet simple to use program, “The Body Guard”,  to enable her to improve not only her own and her clients' health, but empower all individuals to work towards their own state of dynamic health and optimal well-being as a preventative to illness.  As part of The Body Guard program, Christine uses nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, yoga, meditation, complimentary alternate medicinal therapies and many other techniques to reach her and her patients' health and wellness goals. In her personal life, Christine has overcome the early abrupt loss of her father and brother, the intrusion of cancer, the loss of two fortunes (walking away from one and the other through the GFC), and several unfulfilling relationships. She married for the first time the day before her 50th birthday (she made her own organic chocolate wedding cake), completed her Master of Wellness (RMIT),  continues to develop her personal yoga and meditation practice,  and has established her naturopathic clinic in Noosa Heads, Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Here Christine specializes in treating gut and mind disorders that cause anxiety and stress including OCD, Autism, Anxiety, Depression, Pyroluria amongst others.   Anxiety, anger, and stress are a normal part of the human experience. But if you find yourself unable to tolerate even the smallest amount of stress without feeling lots of anxiety and anger, you may have a little-known stress disorder known as Pyrrole disorder. Pyrrole disorder (also called Pyroluria) occurs when a biochemical abnormality results in the overproduction of pyrrole molecules. Pyrrole molecules are excreted continuously in the urine and are normal by-products of hemoglobin synthesis and other bodily processes. For the average healthy person, this is not a problem. However, for someone with Pyrrole disorder, nutrient deficiencies occur because these molecules have an affinity for zinc and vitamin B6, causing them to latch onto and excrete them in the urine before the body can adequately absorb them, leading to severe oxidative stress. Pyrrole disorder is connected to a plethora of symptoms and disorders such as extreme anger and rage, rapid mood swings, night owl tendencies, high anxiety, depression, morning nausea, alcoholism, and bipolar disorder. Pyrrole disorder is something I regularly test for in my clinic. It is typically seen in people of all ages and is often genetically inherited in Northern European people groups such as the Irish and Scandinavian populations. In today’s episode, I take a deep dive with Dr. Judith Bowman of Mensah Medical into what this disorder is and how it may be impacting your mental and physical health as well as myths that could be potentially harmful. I hope this episode leaves you empowered and educated on this stress intolerant disorder and how focusing on root causes instead of symptoms is how true healing occurs. Question: What about pyroluria and measuring kryptopyrroles? I think it's fairly harmless to increase zinc and B6 as a test of whether that's true and see if you get results from it. But I wouldn't treat it like a diagnostic value because no one has followed up any science on that disorder in the decades since it's been proposed. Kryptopyrroles are very similar to porphyrins, that LabCorp has a whole series of tests on. I would go to LabCorp's site, go to Test Menu and then search it for porphyrin, and you'll see a bunch of things that come up. Some of the concerns are relatively similar in terms of zinc and B6 that come up with those. But in my view, the pyroluria thing is to the extent it has merits probably has some relation to the porphyrin disorders and maybe is one. I'm not sure. But I would definitely, like if you're going to investigate the issue, I would investigate it with those. I can say that from the porphyrin disorders, some of them will cause various things to happen in the skin ranging from the skin turning brown when exposed to sun, to pain in response to sun exposure, to the skin turning red in response to the sun. Not a usual red, but a weird red. Some of them will cause red to brown discoloration of the urine, but some of them don't cause any colors because there's a whole category of porphyrin disorders that are all in the same pathway and some of them are sun sensitive, some aren't; some accumulate in the skin, some don't; some of them try to change color; some of them cause pain, some don't; you can't really go exclusively on those symptoms. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Hayley: Hi Dr Cabral, thanks for all that you do! I've listened to your recommendations on water filters and alkalising water. However I have a question about rain water. I live in rural Australia where we have a rainwater tank for our drinking water. I know rainwater in naturally acidic... is this necessarily a "bad thing"? Ours is around pH6. I know it's not the acidity of the food/ drink that's the issue, it's the way our body responds and processes it. If you think rainwater would be too acidic, how can we rectify it? Would a pinch of (aluminium-free) bicarb do the trick, or would that have other negative implications? Thanks! Susanne: Hi! I am interested in sorting out my health, Im struggling with fatigue, anxiety, stomach problems and thining hair. I am a 26 year old woman. However, I live in Spain. Is it possible to take the health tests from Spain? With shipment and legislation and everything. In advance, thanks for replay. Kind regards, Susanne  Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral, I was recently diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. The PetScan says it has not metastasized and that it is at the base of the esophagus. My questions are many: #1. How did I get this? We have no family history of any cancer; my job is like most people these days basically typing onto a computer screen and on the phone all day. I work out of my home. I am considered an obese 56 year old male at 6'1'' and 235 lbs. Now I am down 25+ lbs. to 209 so am simply considered overweight. I have never smoked, only drink alcohol occasionally and have a relatively healthy diet consisting of no soda or junk food, good home cooked meals, occasional sweets, espressos and teas. I have been on and off at the gym over the years as it never seems to produce results. #2. What can I do from a naturopathic angle to fight this cancer? #3. Understanding everyone is different and you cannot diagnose my specific case, is radiation, chemo and surgery the only answer? I watched "Cancer Can Be Killed" on Amazon last night and they discuss "Hyperthermia," "Ozone Therapy" and naturopathic dietary alternatives that sound a lot better than the traditional big 3. #4. How proven are these other modalities? If I was your brother or father what would you suggest? Thanks for all you do Doctor!! Hoping you can provide some answers sooner than later, Anonymous Travee: I have been taking your CBD oil for 25 days now . It gives me indigestion. I rarely get indigestion. Is there anything I can do for that Oh and I love, love, love your podcast. I am learning so much and slowly getting healthier Jenett: Hi Dr. Cabral, My friends son is a little over a year old and has been suffering in and off, from seizures. He has not had vaccinations so she's ruled that out, but the doctors cannot seem to figure out why he continues to have the seizures. Do you have any ideas as to what can cause this and what she can do about it? Thank you so much for your help. Jenett Krissy: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am a new follower of your podcast and as a podcast fiend I have many episodes to get through still! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for my current health situation. I've been dealing with gut issues ever since having an infection and taking Cipro while living in Guatemala a few years ago. After returning to Canada I was diagnosed with leaky gut, Hashimotos and have since been treated for Candida, Klebsiella (multiple types), SIBO and various other overgrowths. After my last visit with my ND we agreed it was time for another SIBO treatment, this time making sure to emphasize prokinetics. The issue I have is that every time I start to treat SIBO I get such severe Adrenal Dysfunction.. I wake up during the night and cannot fall back asleep for hours.. and am incredibly fatigued and weak feeling throughout the day... as well having a reduced tolerance for stress. I wonder if this is because the treatment also reduces good bacteria and thus essential nutrients and minerals? Or is it due to a sudden increased ability to produce my own thyroid hormone and now my medication is too high? My ND does not want to test my thyroid levels every week as she thinks they will be all over the place anyways throughout the treatment. Have you ever worked with someone with these symptoms? I appreciate your feedback. Toni: Hi Stephen! I have been listening to your podcast for a while now and have finally decided to write in. I have just been diagnosed with Pyroluria and undermethelation and couldn't seem to find any information on your podcast search page in regards to both. I am from Australia and not sure if this is a new term for it here or where I should turn to look for more information on the topic. Hopefully you can shine some light on the diagnosis for me! Thank you, Toni  Christine: Hi, do you still offer the healthy gut protocol (the powder AND probiotic) as a package? I bought it in September and am recommending to a friend but cannot find it. I only see it in your store as sold separately. Thank you. Methylation and Pyrroles are hot topics in integrative medicine, yet controversy surrounds both their clinical significance and the best way to treat patients who have demonstrated aberrant biochemical results. Pyrrole Disorder has gained some notoriety in integrative medicine because it's often uncovered via screening of patients with mood or "disorders of socialisation" - particularly in children. The clinical presentation of Pyrrole Disorder has a close relationship with methylation and Dr Mark Donohoe articulates this relationship with poise. His overwhelming take-home message is that we cannot simply take a reductionist approach when treating those who present with pyroluria by boosting them up with the required nutrients but that we must look at the bigger picture and take a broader approach in the healing journey of these patients.
