In this episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we have my friend and mentor, Kyle Gray, to go along this journey of understanding the relationship between fasting and adrenal dysfunction. We tackle how it works for the adrenals, different types, and even how this can be beneficial or detrimental for certain clients. Listen to the full episode to learn more.IN THIS EPISODE:Fasting Isn't “One Size Fits All”It is essential to conduct a thorough assessment of your clients' adrenal function before recommending any type of fasting. This includes evaluating symptoms, conducting a thorough health history, and lifestyle assessment, and examining hormone levels and cortisol patterns as needed. Adrenal dysfunction can manifest differently in each client, and an individualized approach is necessary to determine if fasting is appropriate and how it should be implemented. How Fasting Affects CortisolFasting can lead to an increase in cortisol production because the body perceives the lack of food as a stressor and activates the stress response, triggering the release of cortisol. The rise in cortisol helps mobilize stored energy from fat and muscle tissues to maintain blood glucose levels and meet the body's energy demands. However, as the fasting period continues, cortisol levels tend to stabilize or even decrease. This response can be different for different people, so this is where it is important to know your client, ask the right questions, and listen to how your client feels. The “Low and Slow” ApproachA gentle and gradual approach to fasting in patients with adrenal dysfunction can help assess our clients better. Sudden and drastic changes in eating patterns can place additional stress on the adrenal glands, potentially worsening the dysfunction. Starting with shorter fasting periods, such as intermittent fasting with a restricted eating window, and gradually increasing the fasting window can help the body adapt more effectively and reduce the risk of triggering adrenal imbalances.RESOURCES:Kyle GrayListen to Kyle Gray's The Story Engine Podcast here.Listen to the The Story Engine Book here.Follow Kyle Gray on Twitter.Follow Kyle Gray on LinkedIn.Visit Kyle Gray's Website.ReInvent HealthcareRead through our FREE Resource Adrenal Guide.Get our FREE Guide to Taking a Detailed Health History that gets you to root causes with ease. In this episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we continue on our topic about adrenal health. For this episode, we explore the role of nutrients in managing adrenal dysfunction and dive into their significance and how they can be incorporated into your clients' diet and lifestyle to nourish the adrenal glands and to effectively manage adrenal dysfunction. Listen to the full episode to learn more. IN THIS EPISODE:Nutrients for Adrenal DysfunctionNutrients play a crucial role in supporting optimal adrenal health. Adrenal glands, responsible for producing hormones like cortisol, require specific nutrients to function efficiently. Nutrients like vitamin C, B vitamins (particularly B5, B6, and B12), magnesium, and zinc are involved in adrenal hormone synthesis and regulation. Adequate intake of these nutrients can help maintain proper adrenal function, support stress response, and promote overall energy production. By understanding the impact of nutrients on adrenal health, we as healthcare practitioners can offer targeted dietary and supplementation recommendations to our patients, leading to improved adrenal function, reduced stress-related symptoms, and enhanced overall well-being.Important NutrientsVitamin C: Essential for adrenal hormone synthesis and helps regulate cortisol levels, promoting healthy stress response.B vitamins (B5, B6, and B12): Important for adrenal gland function and energy production. B5 helps convert cholesterol into many important hormones , B6 aids in neurotransmitter synthesis, and B12 supports nerve health.Magnesium: Plays a role in regulating cortisol levels and supports relaxation. Adequate magnesium levels can help reduce stress and promote better sleep.Zinc: Required for adrenal hormone production and assists in immune function. Zinc deficiency can lead to impaired adrenal function.Omega-3 fatty acids: Possess anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce stress-induced inflammation and support adrenal health.Adaptogenic herbs: While not nutrients per se, adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, rhodiola, rosea, and holy basil can help modulate the body's stress response and support adrenal function. The Benefit of Probiotics and Fermented Foods Probiotics and fermented foods can provide several benefits for individuals with adrenal dysfunction. Some examples are for gut health support, stress response modulation, nutrient synthesis absorption, and reduced inflammation. Incorporating probiotics and fermented foods into the diet of your clients can offer support for adrenal dysfunction. In this week's episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we talk about the interactions between sex hormones and adrenal glands, what tests can be done and how to assess for dysfunctions so that we, as practitioners can recommend the best course of action that our clients can take in order to help them get well. IN THIS EPISODE: Cholesterol and Pregnenolone Steal Not very many people are aware or remember that Cholesterol helps create the sex hormones. Cholesterol needs Vitamin B5 in order to get to the next step which is Pregnenolone. So what exactly is Pregnenolone Steal? Learn more in this episode. Sex Hormone Imbalance and Adrenal Dysfunction Sex Hormone Imbalance is very much related to Adrenal Dysfunction. That is why when you approach a client with a Sex Hormone Imbalance, you need to assess cortisol levels and get their stress and adrenal function under control. The Importance of Cortisol Cortisol plays an important role in stress response. If one is under a lot of stress, pregnenolone is going to be converted to cortisol, and lead to imbalances in sex hormones. So it is important to get stress under control in order to control libido and menstrual cycles. In this week's episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we have with us a returning guest, Dr. Izabella Wentz who is a Doctor of Pharmacy with over 20 years of experience. She is also an author of bestselling books and today we dive into her latest one, the “Adrenal Transformation Protocol: A 4-Week Plan to Release Stress Symptoms and Go from Surviving to Thriving.” IN THIS EPISODE: Thyroid Issues and Adrenals 90% of people with Thyroid issues and Chronic Fatigue have some sort of Adrenal Dysfunction because of an intimate connection between thyroid hormones and stress hormones. Some people develop Hashimoto's after a significant time being “stuck” in a stressed out survival state. How Stress affects the Adrenals It is important to support stress function in order to properly support adrenal function. With any autoimmune disease, the first thing we have to remove is stressors. May it be mental, emotional, physiological, environmental, or food related. That is why it is important to properly assess the state of our clients in order to best recommend the best course of action for them. Adrenal Transformation Protocol Overview Safety Signals - Learning to eliminate danger signals (flight or flight mode) and turning them into safety signals such as how to make the body feel like it isn't in a famine. Nutrients - Going over the nutrients that get depleted during stress and nutrients that are needed under stress that support the thyroid and adrenals to get into a thriving state. Daily Habits - Going over the day-to-day routines of clients, do they have negative self-talk, are they doing enough things that bring them joy and energy, are they exercising appropriately. In this week's episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we talk about food, herbs, and supplements that are great for balancing and maintaining our clients' health. We also go over why it is important to assess our clients' diet so we can coach them on what to eat to support good adrenal function. IN THIS EPISODE: The Importance of a Balanced Breakfast A typical high carbohydrate breakfast that consists of bacon, eggs, pancakes, and toast puts a lot of stress on the adrenals. If people are in a state of adrenal dysfunction, they need a balanced breakfast to “break their fast”. A good breakfast would have something “green”, a good source of protein, good omega-3 fats, or something with probiotics. Important Vitamins for Adrenals Vitamin C is important for cortisol and other adrenal hormones. It is also an antioxidant that protects the adrenals from damage. Vitamin B5 is needed to convert cholesterol to pregnenolone and is helpful for those under long periods of stress with adrenal dysfunction. Mushrooms to Support Adrenals Cordyceps are adaptogenic mushrooms that help the body maintain consistent energy levels and help the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which increases cellular oxygen absorption to alleviate adrenal fatigue. In this week's episode of ReInvent Healthcare, we tackle a new topic all about Adrenal Health. We go over its function, how the adrenals work, symptoms, how to test and assess the adrenal glands, and related hormones. We need to know all of these in order to give our clients the proper lifestyle, diet, tests, and nutrients they need for their adrenals, so they can live a fully optimized life. IN THIS EPISODE: Why is the Adrenal Gland Important? It is a part of the Sympathetic Nervous System which produces hormones that help the ‘fight' or ‘flight' reflex to keep you safe when in danger or under stress. The adrenals mobilize resources required to keep us safe and then recover and repair. ‘Adrenal Fatigue' I look at it as “Adrenal Dysfunction” or HPA Axis Dysfunction (Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Axis). It is found that with better testing, we can analyze the adrenals on a deeper level to evaluate our clients and what we can do to support and normalize their adrenals. Factors that can Affect the Adrenals Chronic stress, inflammation, autoimmune condition, food sensitivities, obesity or low-grade infections trigger the body and lead to imbalance. This can make way for chronic viral infections or bacterial infections in the body. Physiological changes can also trigger the adrenals - Toxins found in the air, water, our food, and even the day-to-day products we use like make-up and body care products. It is important to know about all these details so we can get stress off our clients' adrenals. The Case: Eliana is dealing with stubborn weight issues. She's also experiencing bloating and weight gain around her period. She worked with several dieticians and found that a calorie restricted diet did reduce her weight but it wasn't sustainable and left her feeling tired. The Investigation Eliana's challenge is a common one. Many women find that despite eating right and being active, they struggle with unexplained weight gain or an inability to lose weight. There are a lot of things that can cause weight gain or make weight loss very difficult. To find out what was the root of Eliana's weight loss mystery, we needed to explore the most common causes. Esther Blum is an Integrative Dietitian and High-Performance Coach who has helped thousands of women permanently treat the root cause of their health struggles and find joy in their lives once again. Esther is the bestselling author of Cavewomen Don't Get Fat as well as The Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous Project. Doing Everything With No Weight Loss Millions of people looking to lose weight often find themselves frustrated. So many of them feel like they're doing everything they can by eating clear, reducing calories, and exercising regularly but they can't lose weight. In fact, despite their best efforts, some even gain weight. This is because weight loss is more complex than just calories in and calories out. Esther Blum shares the most common 5 culprits when someone can't lose weight. Estrogen Dominance. Your hormones may be the reason you can't lose weight, specifically estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance can take place in your body during different times in your life. It happens when your progesterone bottoms out and the estrogen is chronically elevated. Aside from age-related hormone shifts, there are several other potential causes of estrogen dominance: Stress Gut Inflammation Poor Detoxification Pathways Extra Weight Constipation Estrogen-based Birth Control (NuvaRing or the pill) Xenoestrogen Exposure (through some beauty products, cleaning products, perfumes, and plastics) Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance. Aside from the difficulty to lose weight, there are many symptoms to look for. In men, it might be ‘man boobs'. In women, it could be heavy, painful periods, ,longer cycles, water retention and headaches around the menstrual cycle. Testing for Estrogen Dominance. The most common test for determining estrogen dominance is the DUTCH test. This is a urine test that shows hormone levels and can be used to track progress as you work toward getting out of estrogen dominance. Supporting Estrogen Dominance. The key is to determine the root cause of the dominance and work on that. It might mean hormone replacement therapy, shifting diet and lifestyle, opening up detoxification pathways, and/or taking supplements like DIM (Diindolylmethane). Adrenal Dysfunction. Adrenal dysfunction is often caused by chronically elevated cortisol levels. This can be brought on by chronic stress, poor sleep, low or high blood sugar, and/or environmental toxins.Symptoms of Adrenal Dysfunction: Exhaustion Insomnia or Poor Sleep Feeling Frazzled or Burnt Out Skipping or Doing Ineffective Workouts Supporting Adrenal Dysfunction. The main way to treat adrenal dysfunction and get the adrenals balanced again is through lifestyle changes and getting stress levels down with self-care and stress releasing practices. There are some supplements and adaptogenic herbs that may help, including: Ashwagandha Holy Basil Tulsi Tea Phos Serine It's also important to get to the root cause of the stress and address that. Toxins / Low Thyroid. Exposure to certain toxins can cause the thyroid to underperform. When this happens, the metabolism slows down and it can be very difficult to lose weight. Common toxins that can contribute to this include: Molds Heavy Metals Goitrogenic Chemicals Diagnosing and Treating Toxin Triggered Low Thyroid The best way to detect toxins in the system is through a urine metabolite test. Blood tests will provide a picture of the thyroid. Treating the thyroid may require medication however, bringing down toxins like mercury could shift the need for thyroid medication. Detoxing mercury can be done through chelation, glutathione-vitamin C IV therapy, and also through specific detoxification protocols. Infrared saunas and epsom salt baths are also good for the detoxification process. High Stress & Insomnia An inability to sleep and having high stress can be a bit of a vicious circle when it comes to weight loss. A lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain (and make weight loss difficult) because it affects blood sugar, cortisol levels, and causes the body to store fat while breaking down muscle. The key is to determine the root cause of the insomnia. Common causes include: Stress Arguments Before Bed Poor Sleep Hygiene Doing Cardio Too Close to Bedtime Eating or Drinking Too Close to Bedtime Eating Insufficient Amounts of Dietary Protein Gut Dysfunction and Parasites You need a healthy gut to lose weight. Your gut health can be affected by inflammation and leaky gut syndrome (which can lead to nutritional deficiencies even if you eat healthy). Another way the body gets robbed of nutrition is when you are harboring a parasite. Many think that parasites only come from third-world countries but they can be found on food in North America and can also come from restaurant employees not washing their hands. H. Pylori is also a consideration because it can cause real issues with digestion including gas, bloating, heartburn, acid reflux, and low digestive enzymes and stomach acid. Some easy ways to increase digestive enzymes are to chew food more thoroughly, drink a celery and aloe smoothie before breakfast, and avoid eating in a hurry or while distracted. Conclusion If you are struggling to lose weight and you know you're eating well and moving enough, one of these 5 causes might be at play. Be sure to check with a functional medicine doctor or practitioner to find out. As for Eliana, I looked at her thyroid, hormones, toxins, GI, and lifestyle to see which areas needed support. Her thyroid was all good but when we ran a DUTCH test to look at her hormones, we found our answer. Her less favorable estrogen (4-hydroxy) was high. We also did a heavy metal test and found mercury. Next Steps We used DIM along with Calcium-D Glucarate. We also used BroccoProtect by Designs for Health. To help reduce the mercury in her system we did a Push Catch Detox and she took Glutathione for 6 months. While she was taking these supplements, we also worked on improving some of her lifestyle routines. After 3 months, she was feeling better but the weight has not moved a ton. We had one more area to address still and that was her gut. We did a stool test and discovered dysbiosis (there weren't enough good bugs and too many bad bugs in her microbiome. She also had low digestive enzymes.) Eliana worked on chewing better, and we made sure she was getting enough pre-biotics and probiotics to support her gut health. Happy Ending Eliana lost 5 pounds after we started supporting her gut, and lost another 10 the next month! Eliminating Health Mysteries For Eliana we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her lose that stubborn weight. Could one of these 5 causes be the missing clue for you or someone in your life? Links: Resources mentioned Thanks to my guest Esther Blum. What are the Adrenal Glands? The two adrenal glands are a critical component of the body’s ability to adapt to stress. Each of these glands weighs about 4 grams and is located at the top portion of the two kidneys. There are two major parts of the adrenal gland. The inner portion known as the adrenal medulla synthesizes and secretes the hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. The outer portion known as the adrenal cortex synthesizes and secretes corticosteroids such as cortisol, mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone, and steroid hormones such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), pregnenolone, and others. The numerous adrenal hormones have wide-ranging actions and essentially affect all the organs in the body. The general categories include modulating inflammation and the immune system, blood glucose regulation, mood, cognitive function, energy production, digestive and urinary tract function, exercise recovery, hormone regulation, metabolism, muscle and joint health, and many other major categories. www.Americasnaturaldoctor.com

These glands also produce the hormone cortisol, which is released during your fight-or-flight response. As you can imagine, cortisol is beneficial when you need to be alert and escape danger. If you’re struggling with some level of adrenal fatigue, then it’s likely you’re experiencing low energy, fatigue, problems sleeping or feeling rested, and low motivation. Even if you’re someone who used to exercise regularly, you may be having a hard time finding the energy or motivation to do regular exercise. Additionally, certain types of exercise may make your adrenal fatigue worse. Dr. J and Evan suggested monitoring your diet, make sure you're eating healthy food, keep exercise under an hour (20 to 30 minutes is ideal). Also, increase your exercise capacity slowly—you don’t need to go all the way to the limit of where your body is. It would help if you do a little bit more volume, a little bit more work, and then your capacity gets more significant over time. In this episode, we will cover the top health myths that prohibit your ability to become superhuman. This episode will change your perspective on cholesterol, blood pressure, and arthritis. - Myth 1: Cholesterol Leads to Heart Disease The first misconception we believe is that If you have high cholesterol, it will lead to a heart attack or even death. Cholesterol is very much like a fingerprint; it is unique. However, we are basing everyone's cholesterol health off a general test. This is not a realistic system and often leads to unneeded medication. What is Cholesterol? Cholesterol is a fat and is used to make every cell in the human body. It is like duct tape. If we have damage in our body, the LDL aspect of cholesterol heals our arteries. Without cholesterol, we would not be able to heal ourselves! How do we Properly Gauge Cholesterol? Many cholesterol tests only show us HDL, LDL, and our triglycerides, but do not mention our particle sizes. Particle sizes are what determine our risk of heart disease and heart attacks! It is more important to understand your cholesterol ratios than your cholesterol levels. This can be done by dividing your HDL or LDL count by your total cholesterol count. - Myth 2: Medication is Always the Answer What happens if we take medication when we do not need it? If you are not at risk and are living a moderately healthy lifestyle, and you begin to lower the cholesterol in your body, you are reducing the strength and effectiveness of the human cell. Cholesterol is essential for producing testosterone. By reducing your cholesterol, you will reduce the testosterone in your body. You reduce the amount of fat, which can lead to plantar fasciitis. It can cause muscle atrophy. You need to have a conversation with your doctor if you are prescribed medication! Dive deep, with your research present, asking why they believe that medication is necessary! You should not quit cold turkey. We advise developing a strategy and having detailed conversations with your practitioner. Only 1% of the entire population's mortality was reduced by cholesterol medication when observing heart disease. The leading cause of heart disease is not cholesterol. It is high blood pressure. - Myth #3: High Blood Pressure is Hereditary Only 3%-5% of all diseases worldwide are rooted in a genetic issue. We often assume it is a more significant concern than it is. While high blood pressure is not hereditary, that does not mean our family's lives do not impact us. We do pick up on our parent's habits such as how well they eat, how often they exercise, and the lifestyle that they live, which led them to develop high blood pressure. Following their example can lead to high blood pressure for us too! - Myth 4: The Majority of our Health Issues are Due to Genetics It is not genetics that is the biggest concern, but Epigenetics! What is Epigenetics? These are the lifestyle choices that we make that can exploit our previous genetic code. A poor sleep schedule, poor nutrition, and a lack of exercise can allow traits of our genetic code to surface. If your family has a history of disease, the best solution is to practice a different lifestyle than they have. High blood pressure tells us that we have a problem. It means you either have a deficiency in oxygen, nutrients, and hormones. To lower your blood pressure, reduce your sugar intake! Sugar inhibits our cell's ability for our cells to accept oxygen, leading to high blood pressure. If you have a blood pressure issue, you have an adrenal issue! You can learn more about this by watching Dr. Bart's talk on Adrenal Dysfunction. What about fruit sugar? No matter where the sugar comes from, it is still essential to reduce the intake. This is because we are not active enough to burn off all of the sugar that we are consuming. - Myth 5: Arthritis is Genetic Arthritis is not something that has been passed down to you! Because we have a poor system of flushing used nutrients into our joints, they begin to wear down and grind on one another. This is what causes arthritis! The best way to overcome this is by changing your diet and lifestyle habits! Again, it comes down to epigenetics! The two underlying causes of 99% of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, are poor gut health or poor liver health. - Making Health Simple Always be looking for the root cause as opposed to just accepting a diagnosis. Knowledge is power! Get in touch with your health tribe to keep each other accountable on your journey. Your doctors work for you! Find a team that helps you become the best version of yourself. - What's Next? We have put together a dashboard of all of Dr. Bart's videos, based on health topics, in our Level-Up Health Membership. Red light therapy is a simple, non-invasive treatment that delivers concentrated natural light to your skin and cells. Red light therapy is quick and easy: all you have to do is sit or stand in the light for 5 to 15 minutes, ideally every day. This gives the mitochondria in your cells the natural light they need to make the energy that powers your body. Friends, I have recently become painfully aware of how light can impact overall health. I was on blue light overload and struggling with weekly migraines, sleep issues, and chronic infections, and it led me to finally try Joovv red light therapy. There was no bigger skeptic than me on this. But I have seen a dramatic shift in my health since using my Joovv device daily, specifically my migraines have completely disappeared, and I’ve also noticed more consistent, deeper sleep, and less fatigue. I’ve also rebound very quickly from infections, and, I haven’t had anxiety like I would expect during this sort of crazy time in our world. You guys know I don’t do anything unless it’s worth it, and unless I’ve done my research. There are literally thousands of clinical studies on red light therapy, and the research continues to grow as more and more people are becoming aware of its proven benefits. By stimulating energy production in the body and improving mitochondrial function, studies show red light therapy reduces inflammation, it speeds up muscle recovery and aids in the healing of injury, and it can significantly improve sleep, circadian rhythms, and overall mood, including anxiety and depression. Potassium it is an essential mineral and plays a huge role in mood, blood pressure, adrenal function, and more. If 98% of Americans are potassium deficient you could very well be a part of that statistic, and Dr. J is looking at how this affects the body and what you can do to improve your potassium intake. Symptoms of potassium deficiency (or that your body isn't absorbing it well) are: muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue (general energy issues), digestive issues, heart palpitations, achy muscles and stiffness, tingling and numbness, even your breathing could feel labored. Dr. Justin Marchegiani also mentions that those low in potassium are likely deficient in magnesium as well (which can also contribute to symptoms). We're looking at everything from what can cause low potassium, how teas and alcohol can affect our absorption of potassium, how to replenish after exercise, how to keto and get your potassium in, and more. ===================================== Subscribe on I-Tunes: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Review us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Visit us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com Have a question: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/question

In this episode of the Progress Your Health Podcast, we continue explaining the three main types of Adrenal Fatigue/Dysfunction that we see often. Here is a quick recap: Vampire (episode 68): High cortisol at night and low cortisol in the morning. Hard to fall asleep and very difficult to wake in the morning. Weight gain and evening carb and sugar cravings. Feel much better in the evening and will refer to themselves as a night person.' Ghost (episode 69): Cortisol is very low in the afternoon and early evening. This is why they fall asleep so easily, but there is a lot of difficulty staying asleep through the night. The Ghost is broken up into two subtypes: the Ghoul and the Poltergeist. Ghoul: The cortisol is low in the afternoon and evening. They fall asleep so easily. But come 2 am the cortisol rises for hours. The cortisol will drop a touch, so they fall back asleep after two hours. But it remains elevated until noontime where the cortisol will dive, along with their energy. Poltergeist: The cortisol is low in the afternoon and evening (like the Ghoul). And come 2 am the cortisol rises. But the difference here is the cortisol will rise and fall all night long. That is why these people wake up numerous times in the night. Like the Ghoul, the Poltergeist will have good morning energy but will crash come afternoon. In this episode, we go on to explain the third type of Adrenal Dysfunction that we have encountered with our patients, the Zombie. The Zombie has low cortisol all day and night. It is not Addison's disease. But due to the lower levels of cortisol, the Zombie is tired all day and night. They have no trouble falling asleep. They are the people that will easily sleep 8 to 10 or more hours but not feel rested when they wake up. Zombies report that they could sleep all day long. They have a lot of physical fatigue and cannot exercise. If they tried to exercise, they are wiped out for the rest of the day. And it can take them days to recover after intense exercise. They do crave sugar and carbs. In some ways, it gives them a little short-lived energy to eat sugar, soda, or refined carbohydrates. Not only are they physically tired, but they are also mentally tired and comment that they have a lot of brain fog. It is hard to focus and finish a project, and Zombie's report that they have no short term memory. As we mentioned in the podcast, we wanted to give you some tools that can help. Some options that include nutrition, lifestyle, supplementation, and prescription medication that can help a Zombie type Adrenal Dysfunction. Before we answer this, we have to put out the disclaimer: All content found in this blog, including text, images, audio, video, or other formats were created for informational purposes only.
In this episode of the Progress Your Health Podcast, we continue talking about the main types of Adrenal Fatigue that we see. We are certainly not trying to minimize Adrenal Dysfunction but to make it more interesting and easy to understand, we call these main types: Vampire (episode: 68) Ghost (this episode 69) Zombie (episode 70 – next episode) Adrenal Fatigue or Adrenal Dysfunction (which is what we like to call it) is a real condition that affects millions of people in our country. And the effects can seriously impact a person's health and quality of life. We have seen different types of Adrenal Dysfunction. These three main types are important to know because a person with a Vampire type of Adrenal Fatigue will have a completely different treatment plan than someone that is a Zombie type. In this episode, we are to talk about the Ghost type of Adrenal Dysfunction. There are actually two subtypes of the Ghost. We call them, the Ghoul and the Poltergeist. But first, just to jog your memory. In the last episode, we talked about the Vampire. The Vampire has very low cortisol levels in the morning and elevated levels at night. This causes a lot of morning tiredness, to the point that Vampires are chronically late to anything in the morning. Vampire types also feel more awake at night and cannot fall asleep. On the other hand, the Ghost type has a different dysfunctional secretion of cortisol from the adrenal glands than the Vampire. The Ghost will have very low levels of cortisol in the early afternoon that continues until the evening. So you will see the Ghost very tired in the afternoon and evening. These are the people that can fall asleep easily at 8-9 pm. But in the middle of the night, the cortisol levels will rise so they will wake up. It is common for Ghost types to fall asleep hard for four hours and then wake up like it is morning when it is only 2 am. There are two subtypes of the Ghost: Ghoul: They will fall asleep easily in the evening but will wake up after about 3-4 hours of sleep. The Ghouls will be awake easily for two hours straight. Ghouls might not be roaming halls, but they certainly are roaming their iPhones. Because they cannot fall back asleep. Then by the time they do fall back asleep, they need to wake up shortly thereafter. Poltergeist: Fall asleep very easy at night. After about 3-4 hours of deep sleep, they wake up. The difference here from the Ghoul is the Poltergeist can fall back asleep within minutes. But then less than an hour later they wake up again. Just lik

In our last episode, we talked about Adrenal Fatigue / Adrenal Dysfunction and how to test for it. In the next three episodes, we are going to focus on three main types of Adrenal Dysfunction that we see. Three main types of Adrenal Fatigue: The Vampire The Ghost The Zombie Adrenal Fatigue is quite real and can seriously impact someone's life. We are not trying to make light of the effect that Adrenal Dysfunction can have. But we find by putting some easily remembered descriptions; this medical condition will resonate with people. And it will be more easily understood. Symptoms of the Vampire: Cannot wake up in the morning: these are the people that press the snooze button a lot. Often Vampires will have several alarms to help them get up in the morning They might not be drinking your blood, but will drink a lot of caffeine to get going in the morning. Even with copious amounts of coffee but are still tired. Morning and daytime brain fog Weight gain Sugar and carbohydrate cravings mainly in the late afternoon and evening. They will say their diet is perfect during the first half of the day. But come later in the day and evening time, they cannot control the sugar cravings. Even if they are full from dinner, Vampires still find themselves snacking in the evening. Fatigue: mental and physical fatigue Cannot sleep at night. These are the people that will lie in bed for hours, unable to fall asleep. They were so tired in the morning but come evening, wide awake. Feels more awake in the evening. This type of commonly seen Adrenal Fatigue will get all their chores done in the evening. More energy at night, especially mental energy. This is when they are getting projects, emails done. The adrenal glands secrete cortisol in a diurnal curve. In a perfect world, you will see the cortisol being highest in the morning and will slowly decline, being lowest at night. With the Vampires, you will see what is called a reverse diurnal curve.' With very low cortisol levels in the morning, it makes it very difficult to wake up in the morning. The cortisol can continue to stay reduced in the afternoon, also causing afternoon fatigue. Come evening time, cortisol levels rise. This makes it difficult to fall asleep. The rise in cortisol in the evening can disrupt insulin and blood sugar. This can cause sugar and carb cravings, which are almost impossible to resist.

In our last episode we talked about the differences between PCOS and Adrenal Dysfunction, which is often called Adrenal Fatigue. Adrenal Fatigue or Adrenal Dysfunction is not a ICD10 diagnosis. There is an actual ICD10 billable code called: unspecified adrenocortical insufficiency (E27.40). But there is controversy in using this code for patients. It is technically meant for conditions where the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones such as cortisol and aldosterone. You might be saying, but this sounds exactly like Adrenal Fatigue/Dysfunction! Most people with Adrenal Dysfunction have normal labs, so their doctor cannot code for Adrenocortical Insufficiency (E27.4). And because their labs and testing look normal people are told they are fine and dismissed. In this episode, we are going to talk about the testing for Adrenal Dysfunction. There are some testing that can show Adrenal Dysfunction such as saliva and urine testing. But most conventional docs are mainly familiar with blood testing. Typical blood testing for adrenals usually will show that a person doesn't have adrenal dysfunction, when in reality, they do. We are going to talk about the different methods for testing Adrenal Dysfunction. Let's start by talking about the most common testing method that most docs use, blood testing. Adrenal Blood Testing: Cortisol: Blood testing for cortisol is not accurate. Most, if not all people with Adrenal Dysfunction will test normal for cortisol blood testing. The reference ranges are vast and a blood test is only done once or twice in one day. And when you have a needle coming to stab you, automatically the body raises the stress hormones. So cortisol can be falsely elevated in a blood test. DHEA: DHEA is secreted mainly from the adrenal glands. In adrenal dysfunction, you will see lower levels of DHEA. DHEA reference ranges are vast and everyone falls in normal when doing a DHEA total blood test. But a DHEA-sulfate blood test is fairly accurate for evaluating levels of DHEA in the body. But again, those lab reference ranges are still pretty broad. But in general, terms, if the DHEA is low or low normal range then you can start to consider that a person has Adrenal Dysfunction. Testosterone: DHEA is secreted mainly from the adrenal glands and will convert to testosterone for females. In adrenal dysfunction, you will see lower levels of testosterone in women because of the reduced DHEA levels. In men with adrenal dysfunction, you will also see lower levels of total testosterone. Testosterone reference ranges are very vast. Quest has a reference of 2-45 for females and for males the reference range is 250-1100 ng/dL. These are pretty big reference ranges. But if someone has a low normal testosterone level you can consider that person has Adrenal Dysfunction. Pregnenolone: Pregnenolone is secreted from the adrenal glands and there is a small amount made in the spinal cord and brain making it very neuroprotective. Pregnenolone is accurate as a blood test. But like DHEA and Testosterone, the reference ranges for pregnenolone is huge. For Labcorp the reference range is anything less than 150 is norma

In our last series of episodes, we talked about polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). We have categorized PCOS into three types: Classic Common Concealed Classic has the majority of all the symptomatology that pertains to PCOS. Common has some but not all of the symptoms of PCOS. Concealed PCOS is often missed. What we have found is that the Concealed type of PCOS has a lot of properties and similarities with adrenal fatigue. In this episode, we are going to talk about the similarities between PCOS, and especially the Concealed type and Adrenal Fatigue. We are also going to explain the differences between PCOS and Adrenal Fatigue. Let's differentiate between Concealed PCOS, Adrenal Fatigue: Concealed PCOS: As mentioned, the Concealed type of PCOS is not often picked up on. It is often mistaken for Adrenal Fatigue/Dysfunction. These are the women that have been to many doctors looking for answers. Their symptoms seem to develop or get worse when they hit their late 30's to early '40s. Because at this time, the female hormones can be changing due to perimenopause, and the body cannot maintain balance, so the PCOS and Adrenal Fatigue symptoms start manifesting. This is what you typically see in a Concealed PCOS Symptoms: May have a child, so it looks like there are no fertility issues Regular periods but might be more painful and cramping with terrible PMS Anxiety and fatigue: feeling wired and tired at the same time Irritability Thin Hair Slender until mid 30's to early '40s. Then it feels like they gain weight overnight. Especially in the belly area. No matter what they do, eating less/exercise more, the weight doesn't budge. What is Adrenal Fatigue? This name can be misleading. We actually like the terminology, Adrenal Dysfunction. Because it is the dysfunctional activity of the adrenal glands that creates all the symptoms associated with Adrenal Fatigue. Let's explain a little more about Adrenal Dysfunction. Like we mentioned earlier, the adrenal glands are not fatigued per se. They are healthy tissue and healthy glands. It is the hormonal secretion and function of the adrenals glands which are degraded or dysfunctional. We have all heard about cortisol. Cortisol is essential for life. But secreted inappropriately, can cause a lot of symptoms, specifically ones of Adrenal Dysfunction. Cortisol is supposed to be highest in the morning and then will slowly drop and will be very low at night. This allows us to be awake in the morning and daytime, but able to sleep at night. In Adrenal Dysfunction, you will see what is called a Reverse Diurnal Curve of cortisol. Meaning the cortisol is low in the morning and can be especially low in the afternoon. This causes morning tiredness and afternoon crashes in energy. Then the

In this podcast I talk about Fibromyalgia. As you may know... The direction of our clinic changed drastically when my wife got sick. One of the conditions she suffered from was Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. According to a new study... Fibromyalgia could be caused by low magnesium. I believe that's only partially true. There are other deficiencies that cause fibromyalgia as well. In this episode I talk about low B12, low Vitamin D, and low Omega-3. I also talk about what I believe the #1 cause of Fibromyalgia is... Adrenal Dysfunction caused by prolonged excretion of cortisol. If you're exhausted or you have chronic pain... You don't want to miss this episode.

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Hayley: Hi Dr Cabral, thanks for all that you do! I've listened to your recommendations on water filters and alkalising water. However I have a question about rain water. I live in rural Australia where we have a rainwater tank for our drinking water. I know rainwater in naturally acidic... is this necessarily a "bad thing"? Ours is around pH6. I know it's not the acidity of the food/ drink that's the issue, it's the way our body responds and processes it. If you think rainwater would be too acidic, how can we rectify it? Would a pinch of (aluminium-free) bicarb do the trick, or would that have other negative implications? Thanks! Susanne: Hi! I am interested in sorting out my health, Im struggling with fatigue, anxiety, stomach problems and thining hair. I am a 26 year old woman. However, I live in Spain. Is it possible to take the health tests from Spain? With shipment and legislation and everything. In advance, thanks for replay. Kind regards, Susanne Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral, I was recently diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. The PetScan says it has not metastasized and that it is at the base of the esophagus. My questions are many: #1. How did I get this? We have no family history of any cancer; my job is like most people these days basically typing onto a computer screen and on the phone all day. I work out of my home. I am considered an obese 56 year old male at 6'1'' and 235 lbs. Now I am down 25+ lbs. to 209 so am simply considered overweight. I have never smoked, only drink alcohol occasionally and have a relatively healthy diet consisting of no soda or junk food, good home cooked meals, occasional sweets, espressos and teas. I have been on and off at the gym over the years as it never seems to produce results. #2. What can I do from a naturopathic angle to fight this cancer? #3. Understanding everyone is different and you cannot diagnose my specific case, is radiation, chemo and surgery the only answer? I watched "Cancer Can Be Killed" on Amazon last night and they discuss "Hyperthermia," "Ozone Therapy" and naturopathic dietary alternatives that sound a lot better than the traditional big 3. #4. How proven are these other modalities? If I was your brother or father what would you suggest? Thanks for all you do Doctor!! Hoping you can provide some answers sooner than later, Anonymous Travee: I have been taking your CBD oil for 25 days now . It gives me indigestion. I rarely get indigestion. Is there anything I can do for that Oh and I love, love, love your podcast. I am learning so much and slowly getting healthier Jenett: Hi Dr. Cabral, My friends son is a little over a year old and has been suffering in and off, from seizures. He has not had vaccinations so she's ruled that out, but the doctors cannot seem to figure out why he continues to have the seizures. Do you have any ideas as to what can cause this and what she can do about it? Thank you so much for your help. Jenett Krissy: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am a new follower of your podcast and as a podcast fiend I have many episodes to get through still! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for my current health situation. I've been dealing with gut issues ever since having an infection and taking Cipro while living in Guatemala a few years ago. After returning to Canada I was diagnosed with leaky gut, Hashimotos and have since been treated for Candida, Klebsiella (multiple types), SIBO and various other overgrowths. After my last visit with my ND we agreed it was time for another SIBO treatment, this time making sure to emphasize prokinetics. The issue I have is that every time I start to treat SIBO I get such severe Adrenal Dysfunction.. I wake up during the night and cannot fall back asleep for hours.. and am incredibly fatigued and weak feeling throughout the day... as well having a reduced tolerance for stress. I wonder if this is because the treatment also reduces good bacteria and thus essential nutrients and minerals? Or is it due to a sudden increased ability to produce my own thyroid hormone and now my medication is too high? My ND does not want to test my thyroid levels every week as she thinks they will be all over the place anyways throughout the treatment. Have you ever worked with someone with these symptoms? I appreciate your feedback. Toni: Hi Stephen! I have been listening to your podcast for a while now and have finally decided to write in. I have just been diagnosed with Pyroluria and undermethelation and couldn't seem to find any information on your podcast search page in regards to both. I am from Australia and not sure if this is a new term for it here or where I should turn to look for more information on the topic. Hopefully you can shine some light on the diagnosis for me! Thank you, Toni Christine: Hi, do you still offer the healthy gut protocol (the powder AND probiotic) as a package? I bought it in September and am recommending to a friend but cannot find it. I only see it in your store as sold separately. Thank you. On this week House Call: Steve tweets, “what is your recommended protocol for treating adrenal fatigue?” This is a question that I get almost daily. Your adrenals are important because they help you respond to stress. If you have chronic stress, your adrenals get beat up, and your energy plummets and it becomes difficult to manage your life. You could feel tired and wired, all at the same time. You might get palpitations or feel anxious or have trouble sleeping. You might crave salt. You may get dizzy when you stand up. You might have low blood pressure. You might even have sugar cravings, because your body can’t regulate your blood sugar properly. All these are clues that you could have adrenal problems. Are you dealing with adrenal dysfunction? Leave a comment on my Facebook page. If you liked this video, share it with your friends and family on Facebook and Twitter, and if you have any questions, tweet me @MarkHymanMD, and maybe next week, I’ll make a House Call to you. Wishing you health & happiness, Mark Hyman, MD
We live in hard times, this is undeniable. Now, more than every before, people are struggling in ways that aren't always easy to explain, nor accept. As we continue to blur the lines of acceptable living, the daily pressures to be everything to everyone have effectively altered the ways in which our bodies respond to stress. New diseases & the dramatic rise of others are a case in point that shit needs to change. But where does change begin & what would that feel like? Mid 2015, professional athlete Matt Murphy found himself with big questions to ask as his ability to focus and perform took a massive dive. It's funny how life sometimes throws such large curve balls that it literally forces our hand. Forces the next move, and ultimately sets us up for the next phase. Adrenal dysfunction is a very real and diagnosable state of ill-health which feels much worse than it sounds. This all-encompassing state of anguish is literally a life changer that many people never fully recover from. This is the first of many real life case studies which demonstrates the amazing opportunity that sits just beneath your own discomfort, and how ultimately adaptation always reveals a new light. What does one do when the doctors tell you that everything is OK, despite the fact that you know if your gut that you're actually not OK at all? What is OK anyway? Is health simply the absence of pathology as revealed via laboratory tests, or does our health encompass much more? Attached you will find the PSE Supplements Adrenal Awareness Campaign which fully outlines Adrenal Dysfunction & all it entails; the how, the why & the what can all be found by downloading the report. As the world finally wakes us to the subjective concept of wellbeing, I leave you with this podcast. Shannon...
