This past week, I had the pleasure of attending the Advanced Course for Walsh-Trained Practitioners. To date, 1,200 practitioners from 75 countries have been trained using the Walsh approach. For those unfamiliar, the Walsh Research Institute, founded by Dr. William Walsh, has looked at the nutrient levels of over 30,000 people with brain-related symptoms and found a surprisingly small number of nutrient imbalances (low zinc, high copper, high pyrroles, and methylation imbalances) that repeatedly show up. We address these imbalances in those with depression, anxiety, panic, obsessions, compulsions, inattention, brain fog, hyperactivity, autism, dementia, psychosis, and mood swings with significant and, at times, dramatic results. Bipolar disorder, however, because of its shifting in neurotransmitter states from mania and depression, can be particularly difficult to treat. More than nine million Americans have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This severe condition can lead to drug or alcohol use, financial or legal problems, discord in relationships, work and school instability, and/or suicide attempts or suicide. The course typically begins with an acute onset, followed by episodes of mania and depression, which often worsens in severity over time.In this post, after describing bipolar disorder, I will use Dr. Walsh's Comprehensive Theory of Bipolar Disorder, recently shared at the Society of Neuroscience, to explain:* the cause of bipolar disorder* the reason for the onset, persistence, and increasing severity for many over time* the reason for the increased risk of other health issues* the reason for the switch between manic and depressive states* how this information impacts treatment and preventionBipolar DisorderIt is important to note that the type of bipolar disorder I am referring to here is Bipolar I, a condition in which there are discrete episodes of mania often followed by episodes of depression. Such episodes can occur rarely or even multiple times a year.Manic episodes usually last a week up to several months and include three or more of the following:* increase in activity, energy, or agitation* distorted sense of well-being or self-confidence* needing much less sleep than usual* usually talkative or talking fast* racing thoughts or flight of ideas (jumping from one topic to another)* easily distracted* poor decision-making- e.g., excessive spending, risky sexual behavior* may become psychotic (have a break from reality)Hypomania has less severe symptoms which have less impact on functioning at work, school, social activities, and relationships. Having hypomanic episodes is not sufficient to warrant a diagnosis of Bipolar I.Depressive episodes, which often last a couple of weeks but can vary, include five or more of the below symptoms that are affecting functioning at work, school, social activities, and relationships:* depressed mood (sad, lacking feeling, hopeless, irritable, angry, or tearful)* marked loss of interest or enjoyment of activities* weight loss or weight gain (without dieting or overeating)* too much or too little sleep* behavior slowed down or restless* fatigue - loss of energy* feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt* problems concentrating or making decisions* suicidal thoughts, plans, or attemptsBipolar II Disorder is a different condition. This diagnosis is given when someone has at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode. Depressive episodes are often longer here. There is never a manic episode. Despite its name, this is not a milder form of Bipolar I. Biochemically, it is considered a different disorder.Rapid cycling is used to describe bipolar disorder when, in the past year, there have been at least four episodes of switching from mania or hypomania to depression. This can describe either type I or type II (depending on the presence or absence of mania). As with many other diagnoses, the terms came from seemingly related symptoms instead of a root cause or biochemical understanding.Dr. Walsh's comprehensive theory, which I'll describe, focuses on Bipolar I, in which there are manic episodes usually followed by depressive episodes. For those who struggle with mood swings changing within a day or a week as opposed to discrete mood episodes of mania or depression, pyrrole disorder should be considered.Genetics or Epigenetics?Having a first-degree relative (parent or sibling) with bipolar disorder raises the risk of developing bipolar disorder. After thirty years of genetic research, however, a gene for bipolar disorder has not been identified. The genetics are more complicated. It appears there are many genes involved.2021 Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS)These studies compared the genomes of about 5,000 individuals with bipolar disorder and about 8,000 (controls/individuals without bipolar disorder). Over time, more and more “bipolar” genetic variants have been identified. By 2021, there were 64; however, there are expected to be hundreds. Of these 64 genetic variants, 49 are DNA repair genes and antioxidant genes that occur throughout the body (not just the brain). Just as it sounds, DNA repair genes make enzymes that repair DNA. Antioxidant genes make enzymes that support our protective antioxidant systems. Many of these genetic variants are also associated with cancer and other conditions impacted by DNA damage. This would suggest that those with bipolar disorder come into the world with a vulnerability in their ability to repair DNA damage (which translates to cell damage, tissue damage, and, in the case of the brain, neuronal damage. An event, however, is required to shift this vulnerability to illness.Accelerated DNA DamageWhat damages DNA? Free radicals and thus oxidative stress. To remind you, oxidative stress occurs when our body's inherent antioxidant systems are overwhelmed or depleted by free radicals (due to an insult - a toxic exposure(s), source of inflammation, or trauma). A depletion of our protection leaves our cells and DNA vulnerable to further oxidative stress and damage. If we have variants on protective genes, then we can be even more vulnerable.Numerous studies have found high levels of superoxide, hydroxyl, and ONNO (peroxynitrite)free radicals in those with bipolar disorder. This vulnerability to DNA damage also explains why many with bipolar disorder have a higher risk of other health issues, including heart disease, breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, kidney failure, immune disorders, migraines, gastrointestinal illnesses, and others. But What About the Other 15 Genes? Genetic Weakness on Ion ChannelsThe remaining identified genes are more specific to bipolar disorder and relate to ion channel genes. Ion channels exist on the neuronal membranes, allowing potassium, sodium, and calcium to move in and out of the nerve cell. This movement creates an electrical charge that travels down the cell, releasing a neurotransmitter into the space between that neuron and other neurons to communicate with the next cell(s). OnsetHere again, an epigenetic event (toxic exposure, trauma, significant illness, etc.) leading to oxidative overload impacts the production of the proteins used in these channels, which affects the movement of ions in and out of the cell (more specifically causing flooding of potassium ions (K+) outside the cell) leading to hyperactivity of that nerve. This is why Dr. Walsh's theory considers bipolar disorder a channelopathy.EuthymiaEuthymia - when the mood is neither manic nor depressed - interestingly, appears to be the first mood state after the onset of the condition. The flooding of K+ outside the cell leads to hyperactivity of neurons for serotonin. However, that doesn't appear to cause symptoms since serotonin inhibits or keeps the activity of dopamine, norepinephrine, and glutamate in check.ManiaThe onset of mania starts to occur when the serotonin neuron hyperactivity (from the K+ flooding outside the cells) starts to fizzle out. What follows is a reduction in the inhibition of the neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine, glutamate, and others) that cause widespread neuronal hyperactivity, which causes manic symptoms.Eventually, the declining serotonin activity becomes the dominating force and triggers depression, which may persist for some time. Eventually, the serotonin nerves return to hyperactivity (again keeping things at bay), resulting in a stable mood - euthymia. Progression of Illness It is well known that preventing manic episodes can prevent the severity of the condition from escalating over time. Dr. Walsh's theory also addresses why.Aside from impacting neurotransmission, the problems occurring at the ion channels are also associated with further DNA damage. This means that each episode can potentially add to the DNA damage. Add to this typical DNA damage (for all of us) that comes with aging. A typically untreated original and often persistent insult (such as a toxic exposure), events occurring at the ion channel, and aging can lead to the progression and increasing severity of illness.TreatmentAs with any theory, the inevitable question becomes, how does this impact treatment? Allopathic or mainstream psychiatry uses medication approaches that aim and usually succeed at stabilizing mood. Again, this is important because of the consequences of mania or depression but also because of the potential physiologic damage caused by ongoing episodes. What isn't typically addressed in conventional psychiatry are:* Sources of oxidative stress. Does this person have mold toxicity, Lyme, metal toxicity, candida or other microbial overgrowth, chemical exposures, high EMF exposure, trauma, and/or chronic stress that are continuing to deplete protections and contribute to DNA damage? These are the types of issues that those of us who consider ourselves functional and environmental psychiatrists address.* Support for the antioxidant system. As with any brain condition, robust antioxidant support is indicated to address free radicals, but in this case, it is also indicated to prevent further DNA damage and to protect the ion channels. * Nutrient imbalances in varying combinations are typically also involved, such as methylation imbalances (often overmethylation), pyrrole disorder, and copper-zinc imbalances. Each of these can be exacerbated by high oxidative stress, which is a further cause of oxidative stress.Research into targeted antioxidants will be needed to build upon Dr. Walsh's research. The free radicals (superoxide, hydroxyl ions, and ONNO) are more easily addressed in the body than in the brain. In the meantime, in addition to more typical antioxidants, NAC (which inhibits activity at the glutamate receptor) and MT (metallothionein) promotion therapy (a combination of glutathione, zinc, B6, and specific amino acids) are expected to be beneficial.PreventionBecause bipolar disorder appears to be an epigenetic DNA damage illness (caused by major oxidative overload), early antioxidant treatment in those who are vulnerable to bipolar disorder may prevent the onset and development of this disease. It won't be long before such vulnerabilities can be identified, as early as infancy. For more on the work of Dr. William Walsh and the Walsh Research Institute Practioner Resource Map (, visit: https://www.walshinstitute.org/As always, I welcome your comments and questions. And if you would like to help me get this information out into the world, please consider sharing.Until next time,Courtney P.S. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) today published its end-of-year review to highlight the progress and investment made in 2024 towards delivering Ireland's clean energy transition. 2024 marked a record year of progress for SEAI, with almost €616 million invested in projects across homes, communities, businesses, and public sector organisations. This reflects a 13% increase on 2023 activity. Key SEAI highlights in 2024 include: 54,000 home energy upgrades with over €420 million in support, including more than 7,700 homes in energy poverty upgraded. Over 3,500 businesses approved for more than €62 million in grant support. Over €52 million grant aid for 12,000 electric vehicles and 15,400 residential EV chargers. Energy Research supported with €22 million awarded to 42 new innovative projects. Over €61 million capital funding provided to major public sector pathfinder building upgrade projects and 87 new public sector partnerships signed. Launch of a new, rapid approval Business Energy Upgrade Scheme. Publication of key energy statistics, projections and insights supporting national policymaking. William Walsh, CEO of SEAI, said: "Due to strong Government support in 2024, SEAI delivered a significant increase in financial support and advisory services to householders, communities, businesses, and public bodies. 2024 was a record year for home energy upgrades, with more than 54,000 property upgrades completed, including free upgrades of more than 7,700 energy-poor homes. Of the total upgrades, almost 22,000 achieved a B2 rating or higher, and 3,609 included heat pumps. Access to finance significantly improved with the launch of the low-interest Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme and the extension of retrofit schemes under the Government's Defective Concrete Blocks Grant Scheme. This scheme applies to homes damaged due to the use of defective concrete blocks containing excessive amounts of mica or pyrite." William Walsh added: "SEAI has responded to the needs of businesses by enhancing and creating supports that specifically address the barriers that businesses, particularly SMEs, face when accessing advice and funding for sustainability projects. In 2024 SEAI approved over €62 million in grant support to over 3,500 businesses. These supports included energy audit vouchers, training programmes in Energy Efficient Design, the Support Scheme for Renewable Heat, grants for non-domestic microgeneration, and the newly launched Business Energy Upgrade Scheme. Across the public sector, SEAI delivered over €61 million in capital funding to major Pathfinder projects, and 87 new public sector partnerships were signed with SEAI. SEAI is at the heart of Ireland's clean energy transition, and it is hugely encouraging to see strong engagement with Ireland's decarbonisation journey by householders and businesses in communities and across the public sector. But collectively, we can and must do more. As it stands, Ireland's emissions will exceed targets in the first carbon budget, meaning we still need to rapidly increase the rate of change to deliver on these legally binding targets. Solutions are in our grasp if we have the collective appetite." In addition to the delivery of a significant volume of grants and training programmes in 2024, SEAI also delivered several detailed policy insights - from breaking down Ireland's fuel mix and energy use patterns to projecting Ireland's future energy use and producing an associated risk analysis. These detailed datasets are used by policymakers to support evidence-based policy development, which will be critical in bridging the gap between our current emissions and our 2030 targets. William Walsh concluded: "Ireland has set a strong legal basis and significant momentum that we must now leverage. The incoming government comes at a time where we require a re-doubling of effort to realise the urgent change needed to move away from fossil fuels. The challenge may seem daunting, but we must fo...
William Walsh, CEO of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland on the findings of their 2024 review.
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland has published the Energy in Ireland 2024 report. This report provides the definitive national data underpinning trends in the supply and demand of energy and related emissions up to 2023 and provides initial provisional estimates for 2024. National energy-related emissions decreased by 8.3% in 2023, reaching their lowest level in thirty years. The data shows good signals of progress, but Ireland will have to increase the rate of change significantly to deliver on its legally binding targets. Ireland's total energy demand increased by 0.8% in 2023, led mainly by increased energy demand for transport (up 4.5%) and from the commercial services sector (up 6.9%), which includes data centre demand. Increased demand for transport energy came mainly from private car use and aviation, which accounted for 40% and 22% respectively. In the residential sector, demand for gas, coal, peat, electricity, and oil all dropped in 2023, with energy demand reaching its lowest level in 25 years. Multiple factors are likely to have played a role in this including a reduced need for home heating due to a warmer winter, high energy prices and increased home energy upgrades. The data shows that 2023 was a record year for renewables in our energy mix, which contributed to our emissions reduction. The impact of this was somewhat balanced by demand growth, meaning that despite the reduction in energy-related emissions, at 82.7% Ireland remains highly dependent on fossil fuels to satisfy our energy needs. It is clear from the data that the pace of growth of energy demand needs to be strategically managed and timed, so that calculated decisions are made about where and when growth should happen. There is no room for complacency as, despite progress in 2023, early 2024 data suggests that residential demand for gas and heating oil increased this year, indicating that residential energy demand and emissions may go up in 2024. It is also likely that Ireland's transport and electricity emissions will exceed their sectoral emission ceiling in the first carbon budget (2021-2025). Any emissions that exceed the first carbon budget are carried over into the second carbon budget, where they will need to be addressed by even more intensive policies and measures. Recent reports indicate that Ireland could face considerable fines for not delivering on its climate commitments. With effort, investment and national support to speed up deployment of offshore wind, solar, district heating, heat pumps and electric vehicles - Ireland can transform the rate of technology deployment to boost climate action. Speaking about the Energy in Ireland report, CEO of SEAI, William Walsh said: "This year's data includes a number of welcome achievements in terms of renewables and emissions reductions. The question now is do these signals mark the start of a tipping point for critical mass action in our national energy transition. We need bold, courageous and committed leadership nationally and across all sectors to avoid missing our non-negotiable carbon budgets and EU targets. Acting immediately is essential; we can see already that concerted effort and actions deliver results. It's not just the end goal of emission reductions by 2030 or 2050 that matter, but reducing our emissions each and every year, to comply with science-based carbon budgets and sectoral ceilings. These are our non-negotiables. Thanks to Government support and the efforts of many citizens and businesses over the last few years, we are seeing progress. The changes we are making make a difference. Ireland has set a strong legal basis and significant momentum that we now must capitalise on. The incoming Government comes at a time where a re-doubling of effort could see us realising the urgent change needed in our shift away from fossil fuels. The challenge seems difficult, but we must remind ourselves of the benefits if we succeed - cleaner air, less energy poverty, enhanced e...
William Walsh, CEO of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, discusses how Ireland is performing against its national and EU climate and energy targets.
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has today published its National Energy Projections 2024 report which explores future trends for energy use in Ireland. The results provide an assessment of how we are likely to perform against our national Climate Action Plan and EU climate and energy targets, accounting for factors such as economic growth and Government energy policies. The report finds that there are significant projected gaps to all legally binding targets including national carbon budgets and sectoral emissions ceilings, and EU obligations on renewable energy, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions. The report identifies a severe risk of delayed achievement of the majority of Climate Action Plan targets, including for renewable electricity, biomethane, electric vehicles, district heating, heat pumps and building energy efficiency upgrades. If even some of these risks materialise it would result in certain target failure, increased energy demand, less renewable energy, and higher greenhouse gas emissions. The report notes that even with a massively scaled effort for technology deployment across all sectors, it is now likely too late to meet our legally binding 2030 obligations at EU and national levels. As a result, unprecedented technology change must be combined with strong policies and measures to limit growth in energy demand and disincentivise behaviours and practices that incur wasteful energy use in all parts of society. SEAI CEO, William Walsh said: "SEAI's latest Energy Projections report finds projected gaps still remain in our legally binding national and EU climate action obligations for 2030. While we have made some good progress on energy-related emissions, we are far from being on track for success. Even if we achieve the most optimistic scenario detailed in this report, and hit all Climate Action Plan targets, it is likely that gaps to our energy and climate obligations will remain. A significant expansion of incentives, information and regulation is required to enable us to comply with legally binding climate and energy obligations to 2030 and beyond." "We must begin to embrace measures that will allow us to meet our personal and societal needs at reduced rates of energy consumption. We need to invest in infrastructure and services that support people to live more energy efficient lifestyles, building a policy environment that paves the way for sustainable circular economy goods and services.?We must also be prepared to disincentivise wasteful business and consumer behaviours." SEAI delivers the National Energy Projections annually, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

WORK with Dr. Friedman: https://moodhealing.com/ About Dr. Friedman: Dr. Josh Friedman earned his doctorate in Psychology from New York University and did post-doctoral training in Psychoanalysis from the Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology (TRISP) in New York City. After working in the field for a few years, he realized that something was missing from traditional mental health treatment. Curiosity and a chance meeting led him to discover the world of Nutritional Psychology, which teaches that many psychological issues are caused or made worse by underlying biochemical/nutritional deficiencies. Along the way he became certified as a yoga teacher, incorporating the emphasis on breathing techniques, meditation and movement into his work, as essential tools for working with mental health at the deepest levels. To enhance his effectiveness in helping people heal and grow, he became certified as a Holistic Health Counselor at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York and went on to earn a Diploma of Comprehensive Nutrition (Dip.CN) from Huntington College of Health Sciences. He has been lead to go deeper into the biochemistry of mental health by becoming a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, a Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and studying with mental health nutrition greats such as Julia Ross, MA, Dr. Charles Gant, MD, and Dr. William Walsh, Ph.D. Dr. Josh started Alternative Mental Health Solution to help people find and fix the ROOT causes of their mental health struggles.
Today on Biology of Trauma is our final interview with William Walsh as we continue our conversation on copper excess, undermethylation and Pyroluria. We discuss how difficult it is to identify and treat neurochemical imbalances correctly. Many mood disorders are being misdiagnosed as trauma. Environmental stress can exacerbate a neurological condition but ignoring the biological aspect keeps patients suffering longer. During pregnancy a woman's copper levels increase, causing anger, irritability and in many cases, postpartum depression. Untreated, copper levels may never return to normal, permanently changing the disposition of the mother. In children however, violent tendencies develop and are often misdiagnosed as a psychiatric disorder; the treatment of which will never balance the copper levels causing the rage. In cases of undermethylation we now know that it causes low serotonin but the standard protocol is still to administer methyl folates which can dangerously lower serotonin; in extreme cases patients have become so depressed they commit suicide. In each section, you will see how important individualized care is to the recovery of any patient. Medicine is still catching up to the research but the stakes are high and we should all be fighting for personalized protocols. Key Takeaways: [1:45] Copper excess can cause postpartum depression and violent behavior in children [2:20] 95% of postpartum depression cases have high copper levels even long after giving birth [5:50] Gradual doses of Zinc and Vitamin B6 can correct copper levels, ideally before pregnancy [8:00] Copper excess in children can mistakenly be diagnosed and treated as psychiatric issues [11:40] Testing Zinc, copper and ceruloplasmin levels to verify if you have copper excess [14:00] Undermethylation around the world are increasing & what makes it worse [17:20]How methylated your DNA is indicates undermethylation better than the MTHFR gene [22:12] Folate is a strong methylator and will dangerously lower serotonin in a depressed patient [28:10] Pyroluria is a correctable disorder that indicates high oxidative stress [29:35] Normalizing Zinc and B6 will cure Pyroluria, left untreated Schizophrenia may develop [32:40] Violence declines, if a child's neurochemical imbalance is addressed early in life [35:30] Sociopaths have smaller amygdala and cannot recognize pain in people Find more from Dr. Walsh: https://www.walshinstitute.org/ https://www.facebook.com/walshresearchinstitute https://twitter.com/WalshResearch https://traumahealingaccelerated.mykajabi.com/3-most-common-biochemical-imbalances Interested in learning more about the brain? Today, on Biology of Trauma, I welcome back William Walsh as we continue our conversation on epigenetic conditions and depression. Depression is generally presumed to be a serotonin deficiency, but that is just one of 5 distinct neurochemical imbalances. In this episode, we explore these five forms of depression and how each requires its own specialized treatment. Excessive oxidative stress can damage an integral part of our DNA, which becomes the catalyst for an epigenetic disorder. Some individuals are biologically predisposed to these imbalances, while many develop depression due to an epigenetic condition. Left unchecked, an epigenetic disorder can lead to autoimmune disease and even a full breakdown. In part two of this series, William and I share how to predict and prevent a breakdown in a patient suffering from an epigenetic condition. Key Takeaways: [1:50] The 5 Different Biochemical Forms of Depression [4:15] Determining what came first; the trauma or the depression [6:40] The Role of Methylation in Trauma [9:00] OCD and addiction tendencies are not caused by serotonin deficiencies [11:35] How We Can Predict a Breakdown [13:55] Memory extinction therapy: Treating a memory gone wrong as the cause of OCD [15:40] Epigenetic conditions occur when excessive oxidative stress damages guanine [16:50] How to Prevent Epigenetic Conditions [19:00] Glutothynon, metallothionein, and selenium are essential antioxidants for mental illness [22:00] Understanding the difference between the stress response and the trauma response [24:10] 3 Most Common Biochemical Imbalances [27:00] Excessive copper can cause ADHD, Anger, and even Postpartum depression Find more from Dr. Walsh: https://www.walshinstitute.org/ https://www.facebook.com/walshresearchinstitute https://twitter.com/WalshResearch https://traumahealingaccelerated.mykajabi.com/3-most-common-biochemical-imbalances Interested in learning more about the brain? Today on Biology of Trauma, I am joined by William Walsh, founder of the Walsh Institute. His mission is to bridge the gap between biochemistry and depression. In this episode, he expands on the interconnected relationship between genetics and epigenetics in utero. Our biology is a delicate balance between our predisposed genetics and daily behaviors that influence our ever-fluctuating epigenetics; both determine our mental stability. Since our DNA is in a constant state of decay and reconstruction, epigenetics disorders only occur when the reconstruction of DNA is derailed by an emotional or physical insult to the mind or body that can lead to or exacerbate low serotonin depression. This can heavily impede the child's development in a pregnant patient experiencing this mental state. Continuous oxidative stress can lead to complications on a cellular level for not just the mother but the baby in utero. Umbilical cord testing proves the link between depleted folate levels caused by oxidative stress and the baby's development issues. Dr. Walsh shares how you can identify epigenetic disorders and the tools to treat them. Key Takeaways: [2:30] Folates, B12, and Pregnancy [5:10] Umbilical cord blood testing confirms a direct influence of folates and B12 on babies' DNA [9:00] Genetics vs. Epigenetics in Utero [10:30] Epigenetics define the rate of gene expression, and genetics determines the quality [11:08] Epigenetics fluctuate daily, but a sufficient insult can permanently alter them [11:50] The Role of Oxidative Stress [17:00] An epigenetic disorder happens when the DNA cannot sufficiently recover [22:00] Tools for Addressing Low Serotonin Depression [23:30] Methionine & Sam-E can shut down the expression of the Reuptake gene called SERT [24:45] 5 HTP supplements can raise serotonin levels in the brain Find more from Dr. Walsh: Website:https://www.walshinstitute.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/walshresearchinstitute Twitter:https://twitter.com/WalshResearch Interested in learning more about the brain? Too much neurotransmitter activity can cause nervousness, irritability, insomnia and in some cases mania and psychosis. This can also contribute to pain symptoms, headaches, and increased blood pressure and heart rate. One root cause is an inability to effectively break down neurotransmitters. Two genes involved in this process are the COMT and MAO genes. COMT is also involved in the metabolism of estrogen. If they are "slow," we can struggle with symptoms of high neurotransmitter activity, low stress tolerance and in the case of COMT, high estrogen symptoms. In this podcast, I'll discuss the many factors that impact the expression of these variants, how these can be identified and how this information can impact treatment. In the previous episode, I discussed Overmethylation - an understanding that comes out of the work of Dr. William Walsh, PhD and the Walsh Research Institute. This is the second of two episodes on school shootings. In this podcast I discuss the pathway to violence starting with childhood trauma, mental health issues, crisis, leakage (telling others) and how each of these becomes a potential point of intervention, along with the media not sharing names and photos of the perpetrator, and, of course, stricter gun laws. I'll mention specific resources and approaches some schools are using, not only to recognize and intervene when a child or teen is at risk, but to also strengthen relationships and trust within the school community. As stated so well by the Off-Ramp Project: "The road to violence is long - let's build more exits." In the last episode, I discussed the impact of school shootings and data from the The Violence Project, including data (and concerns) about active shooter drills. Topics included in this episode: 01:48 Data on mass shootings. 04:00 Understanding why males are more likely than females to show aggression. 07:31 The pathway to violence. 08:56 Obstacles to early intervention. 13:31 Most people with mental illness are not violent. The role of mental health in acts of violence. 18:20 Crisis: Another common factor along the pathway to violence. 23:48 Fascination with violence is common among school shooters. Understanding the role of media attention to violence. 26:42 Leaking plans and showing warning signs is another common factor on the pathway to violence. In this episode I discuss why teens who are high achievers are considered to be in the same risk category for depression and anxiety as those teens who are experiencing poverty, trauma, and discrimination. I'll discuss: The role of parents, coaches, and schools Inherent personality traits of many high achieving teens that can relate to undermethylation - a biochemical imbalance, that impacts neurotransmitter activity and can raise vulnerability to depression, anxiety and addiction. What we can do as parents, educators and clinicians to help these and all teens thrive. Topics included in this episode: 02:13 Rates of anxiety and depression are rising, especially in high achieving teens. 04:35 Factors contributing to brain-related symptoms in high achieving teens. Also, understanding the roles of parents and schools. 08:43 The roles of coaches and sports. 09:30 The role of undermethylation. 15:27 What we can do to help these teens and all teens. 21:15 What schools can do. 23:43 What can be done about undermethylation. 26:05 Appearances can be deceiving. 26:59 Sharing my personal story. "More than 90% of people diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, ADHD, autism, and schizophrenia exhibit depleted plasma zinc levels, ranging from low-normal to severe deficiency." - Dr. William Walsh, PhD Zinc is incredibly important when it comes to our health, especially our mental health. Zinc also has a key role in our immune and gastrointestinal systems and appears to play a role in the prevention of infection and complications from COVID including chronic neuropsychiatric symptoms. In this episode, I'll talk about why lower zinc levels are associated with psychiatric conditions and the many ways low zinc impacts brain functioning. I also discuss how we measure zinc, and why the typical lab ranges aren't necessarily the optimal ranges. Lastly, I'll talk about treatment of zinc deficiency and the importance of monitoring copper levels, which can be impacted by zinc supplementation. Today I'm doing a solo episode covering key concepts I discuss in my upcoming interview with one of the leading experts on methylation today, Dr. Albert Mensah. Dr. Mensah was in the game many years prior to the word methylation even becoming part of the functional medicine vernacular. He mentored under Dr. William Walsh, who started doing groundbreaking work on methylation in the mental health sphere decades before MTHFR became a trendy buzz term and years before methylation was at all talked about outside of academic circles. Dr. Mensah is part of this lineage of the great pioneers in the field of methylation research, and as such, you'll see that his knowledge in this area knows no bounds. With that said, I felt that doing a solo episode to provide some background information and a better understanding of some of the advanced concepts we discuss would be of value. Look for my three-part interview series with Dr. Mensah, which will be released in the coming weeks. 2:16 - Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor SSRI physiology 101 6:04 - How homocystein is biochemically made 7:30 - Methionine converting to S-adenosyl-L-methione (SAM) 8:03 - SAM converting to SAH 9:02 - The SAM to SAH ratio 9:55 - The methylation misconceptions of folate 12:14 - Selective serotonin reuptake enhancers 13:02 - gene polymorphism (SNP) 101 13:41 - Glycine in the context of methylation https://www.gdx.net/core/supplemental-education-materials/Methylation-Pathway-Handout.pdf (Methylation Pathway Visual Aid) https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Schematic-diagram-showing-mechanism-of-action-of-SSRIs-These-agents-block-the-reuptake_fig1_7730046 (SSRI 101 Visual Aid) Email ROTC@rootofthecause.net with questions or requests for future episodes.
In this podcast, I introduce the work of Dr. William Walsh and the Walsh Research Institute which studied nutrient levels in blood, urine and hair samples of 30,000 individuals with psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, autism and dementia. Through this research, they found "only six or seven nutrients (either by way of deficiency or overload) have a dramatic impact on mental health," and that by correcting these imbalances using nutrient protocols, that most individuals symptoms improved. Here I share a conversation I had with Dr. Walsh five years ago in which I heard his story, and learned about how he made his discoveries. I look forward to expanding on nutrient imbalances in future podcasts on pyrrole disorder, copper overload and overmethylation. My previous podcast on undermethylation comes out of the work of Dr. Walsh. Founded in 2019 by frontman William Walsh, Iron Will has bursted onto the alt-rock scene by storm. Compared to the likes of Incubus, 30 Seconds to Mars and Circa Survive, the group’s sound is a summation of their diverse influences. Comprised of William, Jeff Daughtridge (Bass) and Jamie Pannucci (drums), the members share a combined 50 years of experience in the industry and it shows. “Our passion for music exudes through our sound and stage presence.” William says, “You will hear driving rock rhythms, with atmospheric guitar & synth as well as melodic vocals. If you delve a layer deeper, you will find meaningful lyrics that inspire.” Winners of the IndieCon 2019 Next Big Thing Award, Iron Will continues to ride the momentum of their debut EP Secrets. Professional critics claim the group is deserving of national attention and it was national attention they received; Radio airplay on over 100 stations nationwide and direct licensing deals with Major TV & Sport networks. That momentum has carried to the live stage as well, Iron Will has headlined Space Coast Music Festival, multiple shows in Central Florida and have recently added Seattle HempFest to their schedule in 2020. William E. Walsh, MD graduated from Creighton Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska, and served for two years in the United States Air Force where he discovered his fascination with treating diseases of the environment and diet. After four years of allergy fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, he passed the examination of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, certifying him as an allergy specialist. He is a fellow oof the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Dr. Walsh's research led him to a startling conclusion: Our diet causes the dementias. He suffers from Alzheimer's disease and successfully reversed this dementia by changing his diet. With this book, he shares his knowledge with you hoping that you or a loved one can similarly prevent or recover from this dreadful disease. Dr. William Walsh, Mayo Clinic trained medical physician, discusses the many diseases caused by our diet including strokes, heart attacks, obesity, diabetes, migraines and the dementias. He suffers from one of these dementias, Alzheimer’s disease and successfully reversed this dementia by avoiding or limiting foods and beverages that destroy nerves. These foods and beverages are, unfortunately, part of our daily diet.In his previous book, Retaining the Mind, Dr. Walsh identified these destructive foods and beverages. They contain damaging chemicals that he terms the aging chemicals because they cause the brain damage of the dementias and also cause the debilities associated with aging. And many other common diseases of the body. In this book, How I Recovered from Dementia, he explains simply how these foods and beverages destroy the brain. He also tells you what he eats and drinks, the foods and beverages he tolerates. They are restoring his ability to speak, think, plan and act (and write). They also shield him from a death that would have ended his life years ago. Yes, years ago. His continued living and writing show that other dementia sufferers can also understand dementia and can learn to reverse its lethal progression. He gently and simply guides the reader to the path he followed to save his life and regain the health of his mind and his body. The Case: Allison is 36 and has been struggling with mood issues since college She feels depressed, anxious, lonely and uncomfortable in social situations. Antidepressant medications and talk therapy worked only temporarily She tried supplement with vitamin B, but that made her feel worse The Investigation According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety affects over 18% of the US population and is the most common mental illness in America. They also report that it’s not uncommon for depression and anxiety to be experienced together. The website lists risk factors as genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. I had my suspicions that genetics were at play with Allison. My instincts were to test her DNA for the MTHFR gene and determine if there might be a problem with her methylation capacity. To talk more in depth about this, I invite a methylation expert to join me on the show. Dr. Loren Marks is a chiropractic physician who has been practicing in New York City for over 35 years. He’s the founder of the Integrative Assessment Technique, or IAT which is an assessment methodology embracing nutritional-biochemistry, emotional health, and structural neurology. He's also a postgraduate instructor, a noted speaker, and frequent lecturer. What is Methylation Methylation is an important metabolic process. Methylation happens in every cell; in every organ of the body. And, it takes place more than a billion times a second. To understand the process, you first have to know that there is a molecule called methyl which is composed of carbon and hydrogen (CH3). This molecule occurs in the cell and plays an important role in many processes in the body including eliminating heavy metals, detoxification, repairing damaged DNA, and creating new cells. Mental Health and Methylation Methylation plays a role in energy production, mood balancing, and neural transmission in the brain. The three main neurotransmitters that are controlled or expressed through methylation are serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine - all of these correlate with depression, anxiety, and other issues with mental health. It’s important to note that the methylation pathways in the brain depend on good nutrition. What is the MTHFR Gene? Many people become familiar with methylation in relation to the MTHFR gene which can be identified through commercial DNA tests like 23 and Me. MTHFR is short for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. When geneticists looked at the different genes that control the methylation process, MTHFR has the highest molecular weight, which means it's the largest gene in a pool of over 20 genes. They assumed it had significant impact on methylation because of this dominance but further research has revealed that the smaller genes actually they can significantly impact the effectiveness of methylation. The MTHFR gene is responsible for the metabolism of methyl folate. MTHFR has two different alleles that, if they are mutated (which is common), can render the gene incapable of metabolizing methylfolate. What Does it Mean to Have Mutated MTHFR Gene? Many people become concerned that they have a mutation but Dr. Marks says that it doesn’t necessarily mean you're in trouble. There are many other things to consider including how this is impacting your ability to process methyl. The MTHFR can be expressed due to a predilection based on the genes that you inherited from your parents, but your lifestyle choices (the food you eat, the water you drink, the air you breathe, the stress that you're living with day to day) play a role. Research shows that lifestyle can trigger the expression of MTHFR gene. Diagnosing Methylation It’s important to work with a doctor to determine what’s happening with methylation. Having the MTHFR gene doesn’t mean there is a methylation problem - you could be balanced, be an over-methlator, or an under-methylator. There are two blood tests that can determine methylation efficiency. One is called a whole blood histamine. The normal range on this test is 40 to 70. If you're in that range, even if you have MTHFR, then your global methylation status is actually balanced out by other genes. The second test you can get is the SAMe ratio test. Testing the S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) ratio will reveal whether you are net over or under in methyl. How to Treat Methyl Related Depression and Anxiety Rebalancing methyl levels may help with depression and anxiety. Depending on whether you are over or under methylator, there are supplements that can help. But, the wrong supplements can be problematic. For example, in some cases methyl folate can lower serotonin which is not what someone wants if they are dealing with depression or anxiety. Dr. William Walsh identified 5 biotypes of depression: undermethylation, folate deficiency, copper overload, pyrrole disorder, and toxic metals. Identifying which biotype is behind the depression will inform the correct supplement treatment. Additional tests can further inform treatment which could include: SAMe, methionine, antioxidants, zinc and B6 (if you have pyrrole disorder) and copper. In the majority of cases, applying the right nutrient therapy, reducing oxidative load, improving diet, and exercising. For Over methylators, Dr. Marks suggests niacin or niacinamide for over methylators (because it binds to methyl), calcium fulminate, mineral manganese, B12, B6, zinc, vitamin C and a special form of vitamin E called tocotrienols. He also recommends taking antioxidants for the oxidative load. Mystery Solved DNA tests revealed that Allison had the MTHFR gene. Further testing revealed that she was an over methylator. She had reacted to the B vitamins she’d taken because they were methyl based and her over methylation had spiked her methyl levels. To balance this, Allison took 1 capsule of Niacin CRT per day to soak up the methyl. We also used a supplement called B12 ND from premier research labs which is B12 in the adenosyl cobalamin form and folinic acid instead of methyl folate for source of natural folic acid. After 3 weeks on this protocol, Allison noticed a change. She described it as something lifting, almost like a veil. Allison also had an elevated level of copper which we saw that through a hair test. I gave her 90 mg of Zinc Supreme, 3000 mg of Vitamin C and 250 micrograms of Molybdenum to balance that. Please note that those zinc dosages are high due to her specific high level of copper. I don’t normally recommend that someone supplements with such high doses of zinc daily unless they have high copper and are under the care of a professional. We monitored Allison’s copper levels over the next few months and on the 3rd hair test we saw the levels back in the normal range at which point we stopped the extra zinc, vitamin C and Molybdenum. With the copper down and her methylation more in check, we were able to stop the niacin as well. She now only uses niacin when needed if she feels any of her past symptoms that came with over methylating. Conclusion Allison rebalanced her methyl and was so excited to be feeling better. After years of medications and frustrations, she finally understood the role of methylation in her mental health. Now, she feels capable to track of her methyl levels and adjust as need be to keep herself balanced. Important Note Methylation is a process and so can and often will shift as we go through life. It’s important to monitor and adjust as needed. When we take out methyl groups with niacin and don’t give any extra, it is possible that over methylators can still become low in methyls and therefore temporarily be under methylators. Like Allison, these levels should be closely monitored and treated appropriately. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Allison, we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her mental health. Could methyl levels be the missing clue for you or someone in your life? Share this episode with them. Thanks to my guest Dr. Loren Marks. In this video, natural health expert and Mercola.com founder Dr. Joseph Mercola interviews William Walsh, Ph.D., author of "Nutrient Power: Heal Your Biochemistry and Heal Your Brain."
Whether you’re on the right or the left of the political spectrum, I’ll bet that lately the Office of the President isn’t far from your mind. Every day, it seems, I encounter one, two, three, four stories about President Trump, which includes those on Twitter that he posts himself. For me, as the stories keep coming, so do the questions. Who is this guy? How is this guy President? And, by extension, just who can be President–what kind of character or lack of character makes a person right for the Office? My questions aren’t new, even if our current President raises them in new and, for me at least, disturbing ways. Theres an entire subgenre of literature devoted to them. The presidential biography aims to give readers a sense of who a given President is, of the man behind–and before–the Office. These biographies are usually cradle-to-grave tomes or at least cradle-to-end-of-term, written with the idea that a President’s early life somehow shapes his political destiny. Theres even a version of this subgenre written for children, so kids can learn how to be like the young George Washington or the young Abe Lincoln, confessing about a chopped cherry tree or returning a penny to an old lady. Here the idea is that, if our kids model themselves on the early characters of these Presidents, they too might someday hold our nation’s highest office. In his latest book, Forty-Four American Boys: Short Histories of Presidential Childhoods (Outpost19, 2017), William Walsh explores not only these assumptions, but also the literature that’s built upon them. To create it, he read through hundreds and hundreds of presidential biographies, from Washington to Trump, and out of that experience assembled a singular book, one that takes us across 285 years of American history and into the boyhoods of forty-four men who shaped it, since 1801, from The White House. The result is fascinating: Walsh didn’t write a single word of it, and yet his book is clearly the result of a consummate literary talent. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we go into what is methylation, why it’s so important for every function of our body, why it’s gained so much more attention in recent years and how we can create a methylation balance that will help us prevent and reverse ailments such as cancer, autism, thyroid issues, autoimmunity and heart conditions. The concept of methylation is truly fascinating and this is an episode you will want to share with all your loved ones. We previously talked about methylation on the show with Dr. William Walsh. What is methylation? The process of methylation in the body is so fundamental. It is happening all the time. A methyl group, is a carbon with 3 hydrogens. A small little player that is moving all the time, changing the metabolism. Listen in to hear Dr. Fitzgerald talk about the effects it has on our body. It’s important for fetal development and touches every bodily function. Why is there an increasing focus on methylation in the last several years? Epigenetics is booming right now. There is a lot of research surrounding the effect of methylation on cancer, so it’s going to gain a lot of attention. If you have a condition such as cancer, autism, heart disease, thyroid issues, autoimmunity, fertility issues…having a methylation panel is probably a good idea. What can we do to achieve methylation balance? There are many things we can do on a daily basis to achieve methylation balance. We are not “stuck” with the genes we were born with. We can make changes in our lifestyle to alter our genes’ behavior. Exercise- this has a massive effect on methylation balance. It gets the liver up and running and it’s anti-aging! This doesn’t mean beat yourself up with a crazy exercise protocol. It’s about doing what is good for your body, and turning it up over time. No overdoing it. Sleep- There is more and more research coming out on this. Everything gets compromised with just a little bit of sleep deprivation. Our ability to think well and react, our health, our waistline, etc. That’s not even acute sleep deprivation. And when we get “caught up” on sleep, we don’t immediately reverse the effects of sleep deprivation. So we need to constantly manage our sleep. Stress- Nothing depletes methylation like dumping out a bunch of adrenaline. Heightened stress response. Medications- certain medications also damage methylation and inhibit methyl absorption. Acid blockers are a huge one and a large majority of Americans are taking these. We can help our acid reflux with a change in our diets. Gut Microbiome- Probiotics, specially bifida bacteria. Although, diet is our biggest and best probiotic. Nutrition- Studies show that we can reverse negative methylation when we eat right and have enough methyl nutrients in our diet. High folate rich veggies- all greens, spinach, kale, asparagus, broccoli, collard greens, turnip greens, etc. A pound of veggies a day. Beets are an absolutely healthy methyl superfood! Eggs- full of choline Seeds- sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, etc. Nuts Meat- grass fed, organic meats, B12 Beans and legumes- methyl nutrient minerals Methylation adaptogens finesse the methylation balance: flavonoids in fruits and veggies turmeric curcumin- anti-cancer green tea- potentially anti-cancer tomatoes- lycopene vitamin D- sun vitamin A To learn more and get some great recipes to balance methylation, check out Dr. Fitzgerald’s book: The Methylation Diet & Lifestyle, including an explanation of the functions of methylation in the body, description of the clinical problems surrounding methylation, comprehensive discussion of the pros and cons of supplemental methylation nutrients , how to approach methylation assessment in a more comprehensive manner, what foods provide safe forms of methylation-related nutrients, how lifestyle factors impact methylation, 7-day menu plans (one gluten- and dairy-free, one Paleo) and practitioner checklists for assessment and intervention options. She’s offering a generous 15% discount to FSL listeners, using code FSLModern15. Check out the testimonials, and download the preface and table of contents for free! We had Jason Seib on the podcast earlier this year and his message is very similar to Dr. Fitzgerald’s. We discussed primarily fat loss with him, but his message is that you can’t achieve fat loss without having all 4 pillars of health in order: stress, sleep, exercise and nutrition. Check out the 4 part series we recorded with him to go more in depth into each pillar: Stress Management Prioritizing Your Zzzs Nutrition Exercise Dr. Fitzgerald’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Health Journey: One pound of veggies a day. Lots of water- she drinks 1/2 her weight in ounces of clean liquids per day. Exercise the brain- engage in life’s activities that make her happy. Dr. Fitzgerald’s Morning Routine Wake up early and easy. No stress, slow wake. Quite time, spiritual practice with her higher power. Cook her lunch, her largest meal of the day. Supplement protocol. Gym most days: spin class, weightlifting and stretching. Or rides, her bike outdoors. 15 Day Fat Loss Kick Start Ebook Download your FREE copy here!! DOWNLOAD! Check your email. Dr. Kara Fitzgerald’s Bio: Dr. Fitzgerald received her doctorate of naturopathic medicine from National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. She completed the first CNME-accredited post-doctorate position in nutritional biochemistry and laboratory science at Metametrix (now Genova) Clinical Laboratory under the direction of Richard Lord, Ph.D. Her residency was completed at Progressive Medical Center, a large, integrative medical practice in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Fitzgerald is lead author and editor of Case Studies in Integrative and Functional Medicine, a contributing author to Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine and the Institute for Functional Medicine’s updated Textbook for Functional Medicine. She has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Fitzgerald is on faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine, and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. She was formerly on faculty at University of Bridgeport in the School of Human Nutrition and the School of Naturopathic Medicine. She is a clinician researcher for The Institute for Therapeutic Discovery. Dr. Fitzgerald regularly lectures internationally for several organizations and is in private practice in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. If you missed it, our last podcast episode with Sarah Doyle was all about building up our self confidence and learning to love ourselves once and for all. She has a challenge for us too!
Dr. William Walsh discusses the findings of his 30+ years of research, epigenetics and the role methylation has on brain disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, cancer and heart disease. This episode of Food, Sex & Life for the Modern Woman barely touches the surface of understanding the role of epigenetics and nutrient therapy on our health, but it is a powerful one you won’t want to miss. Epigenetics is the study, in the field of genetics, of cellular and physiological phenotypic trait variations that are caused by external or environmental factors that switch genes on and off and affect how cells read genes instead of being caused by changes in the DNA sequence. Hence, epigenetic research seeks to describe dynamic alterations in the transcriptional potential of a cell. Dr. Walsh discusses how toxins, lead and drugs can cause the epigenetics in a pregnant women to go wrong, leading to disorders such as autism. After birth, environmental factors can create the same epigenetics malfunction. Balance the methylation levels through nutrient therapy (the right diet) can set us up for better health, and lower our risk for brain disorders and diseases. What Are The Effects of Methylation? Regarding methylation levels, the findings are that: about 70% of Americans are have normal methylation levels 22% are undermethylated: have strong will don’t like authority tend to have seasonal allergies tend to be OCD over achievers competitive & driven type A personality higher risk of clinical depression autism high libido…lots of children addiction quick to become addicted Nearly all great athletes, NBA players, CEOs, successful scientists and doctors are undermethylated 8% are overmethylated: talkative more social than most make wonderful neighbors not competitive care more for others than themselves are prone to extreme anxiety post partum depression and psychosis low libido How Can We Help Balance Methylation Levels? The under and over methylated CAN be helped with methylation regulation. When women get pregnant and stop smoking, stop drinking, stop taking caffeine and drugs, and start eating healthier…it’s already too late! Epigenetics happens in the first 20 days of gestation. So for women who think they may become pregnant, start those good and healthy habits well before becoming pregnant to increase the baby’s likelihood of being healthy. In autism, early intervention is key. You MUST identify remedial therapies early on. He has found that great improvements are made in small children, but once they reach about age 16 and older, those improvements are drastically reduced. We need to learn to normalize brain function without foreign molecules (drugs). In the future, we will see more nutrient therapy for brain diseases. This is where Dr. William Walsh’s book, Nutrient Power: Heal Your Biochemistry and Heal Your Brain, comes in. It’s a book about natural healing for ADHD, autism, behavior disorders, depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s. Take a look at it to learn more. Tell your friends and love ones about it and help us spread the word. Dr. William Walsh’s Bio: William J.
