Today's radio feature says bravo for bakelite, an early form of plastic which brought radio to the people. When radios were first manufactured in the first twenty years of this century, they looked more like an experiment in a physics laboratory than something which was designed to entertain. Then some firms started using a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin for their cases, formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, usually with a wood flour filler. It was developed in 1907–1909 by Belgian chemist Dr. Leo Baekeland. Wikipedia has more here. In this programme, broadcast on the Queens Day holiday in 1998, we visit the home of Willem Bos who has scoured the flea markets in the Netherlands is search of his passion for bakelite. It is April 30th as this entry is published. Its a national holiday to celebrate the Queen's Birthday, although Beatrix is not actually having a birthday today. Her late mother was born on April 30th and this is a better time of year than the queen's official birthday on 31st January (1938). So when she was inaugurated in 1980, Queens Day didn't move. The programme attached to this entry is also from Queens Day, but as broadcast on Thursday 30th April 1987....23 years ago. In this show we learn that VOA Europe goes stereo and will also carry commercials, through a barter arrangement with Westwood One We hear the plans for satellite scrambling in MAC mode. AWR Guam signs on. There's also a feature on Audience research - Tom Fikkert of Radio Netherlands and Graham Mytton who was Head of the International Broadcasting Audience Research department at BBC World Service. I find it fascinating to hear how shortwave was declining back then. Finally, clandestine radio expert John Campbell reports on some fascinating books he discovered at book fairs across the North-West Europe.

Orangecello Cake Recipe Ingredients: 2-15 oz can mandarin oranges 1 box of Pillsbury Moist Supreme Pineapple frac12; cup of reserved juice from oranges frac12; cup of Caravella Orangecello 2 eggs 1/3 cup of oil 1 cup chopped pecans Glaze 1 cup of sugar frac12; stick of butter 3oz of Caravella Orangecello frac14; cup of chopped pecans Directions: Preheat oven. Spray Bundt Pan with Crisco Pillsbury Flour. Mix 1 cup of chopped pecans with 2 teaspoons of sugar then sprinkle in pan. Mix eggs, oil, orangecello, cake mix, frac12; cup of reserved juice. Blend well. Add 2 cans of drained oranges and Blend on high for a couple of minutes. Pour immediately into pan and place in oven on 325 for dark coated pan or 350 for regular coated pan for 45 minutes---You want a nice brown crust. Turn oven off and leave cake in for another 15 minutes. *Check with toothpick for nice clean stick before turning off oven. Make glaze while cake is in the oven, let cool and thicken.
