We've all been there. Those moments as leaders when a project stalls, a key team member leaves, or that big initiative feels like it's crashing and burning. It's so easy to slip into a spiral: frustration, blame (at others or ourselves), and a sinking feeling of helplessness. That's the victim mentality, and as comfortable as it seems in the moment, it's incredibly destructive to our leadership. The Trap: How We Give Up Our Power Here's the thing about playing the victim: we surrender. We convince ourselves that our fate is out of our hands – bad luck, unfair bosses, you name it – anything but ourselves. Thoughts become a chorus of "I can't...", "This always happens to me...", or "Why bother, it's pointless...". It feels easier than taking a hard look in the mirror, but make no mistake, this is us putting ourselves at the mercy of every setback. We all want to feel in control as leaders. The victim mentality is the illusion of control, where it's somehow safer to wallow than to confront the hard choices ahead. Yet, the very act of choosing this mindset robs us of the true power we hold to shape our path. My Own Victim Trap (and Yours Too, Let's Be Honest) Let me get real for a minute. Early in my career, I had a boss who micromanaged everything, undermining my confidence at every turn. It was the perfect breeding ground for a victim mentality. I could blame her for my lack of progress, for feeling stifled and unseen. It WAS unfair...and it was also a dead-end. The day I decided enough was enough, wasn't about her changing. It was about me. Steps to Break the Cycle True leadership – the kind that changes teams, organizations, and even ourselves – demands we break free from this trap. Here's what's worked for me, and countless other leaders I've coached: Awareness is the Antidote: Catch yourself playing the victim. What are those inner monologues, the excuses? Journaling can be powerful here. Get brutally honest about the stories you tell yourself. This isn't about self-judgment, it's about seeing the pattern. Reframe to Empower: Those negative thoughts? Don't try to silence them, retrain them. "I can't present to this group" becomes "I need more prep to feel confident with this crowd". Instead of "why me?", ask "What might this experience teach me to become a more resilient leader?" You Do Have a Choice: We can't control everything, but response is always OURS. Taking responsibility doesn't mean being at fault. It means owning the fact that YOU can chart the course ahead, even if that's course-correcting from a mess. Your Tribe Matters: Mentors, a peer group, even a therapist – we weren't meant to tackle this alone. Find people who get real about leadership struggles and genuinely believe in you, even when you don't. Spirituality as a Strength (If It's Your Thing): For me, meditation and affirmations help quiet those self-critical voices. Others find strength in a sense of larger purpose. If spirituality plays a role in your life, let it be an anchor when the seas of leadership get stormy. Resilience: The Muscle We Build: Every time you fall flat, get back up, and dust yourself off, you're growing this muscle. Failing is how we learn. Embracing that is how we become unstoppable. This Isn't Easy, But It's ESSENTIAL There will be days the victim mentality whispers sweet nothings of surrender. That's when these steps become a lifeline. True power as a leader is not the absence of challenges, but our ability to meet them, learn, and rise stronger on the other side. The world needs more of that kind of leadership, don't you think? A follow up on the discussion of differences between latex and neoprene gaskets - since I don't have access to both a dry and semi-dry suit, I tried comparing dry and semi-dry tops out paddling and surfing, as well as standing in the shower to see if any water would get in one vs the other. While it's not the same as a full suit, it might help as background info for those thinking about calmer or warmer situations where a full dry suit isn't absolutely mandatory. [01:04]   Thanks, Jamin.  It’s a pleasure to be here.  [01:07]   So, what did your parents do?  And how has that informed your current career? [01:11] You know that’s an interesting question for me for a couple of reasons.  Number 1 – My dad, I think, was much easier to see in how he kind of molded my career.  He was a business guy; he ended up to be a CFO for a company called Miniplex. He was very hardworking.  He made the most of his skill set. He was an overachiever. You know, frankly, I wanted to be him. Later in life, that was too lofty a goal, so I just actually wanted to half of the person he was.  He was clearly my hero and taught me so much. I think the biggest takeaway was really making the most of your skill set. With my mom, Jamin, it was just a little bit different; it was a little bit harder to see; it was a little bit harder to understand the impact of what she had on what she had on my career and how she really brought me up.  You know she was very organized. My mom was extremely outgoing. My dad is the exact opposite; he is an introvert. She was very detail-oriented, and she was in charge of dressing my two sisters and myself in terms of picking out clothes.  I can still remember going and getting my first suit, probably crying and yelling and screaming every step of the way, went to a store called Milton’s in Newton, Massachusetts. But she was very instrumental on my career because I just didn’t see it right away, right?  So, being organized and having great time management skills and being really detail-minded. And actually, one of the things she taught me was notice everything. So I tend to notice everything there is out there. I may not comment on it. So it just really differences between my parents.  You know my dad was much more of the business, the hard skills, and my mom was more of the softer skills. Both of them are incredible people. Unfortunately, I lost my dad in September. I lost my hero, but I think about him every day. And my mom is still going strong at 82 and pretty impressive, as I say, young lady. [03:20] So, you are a well-respected speaker in the market research area.  In fact, I think you just spoke at the Insights show in Las Vegas. In dieser Studie wurden bei 103 traumatisierten Hunden aus der Intensivstation verschiedene Laborparameter erhoben. Innerhalb von 24 Stunden post Trauma wurden folgende Gerinnungstests aus dem Citratplasma bestimmt: der Quick-Wert, optimierter Quick-Wert, die aktivierte partielle Thromboplastinzeit und die Thrombinzeit. Zusätzlich wurden die AT III-Aktivität, die Fibrinogenspalt-produkte (FSP) und die D-Dimere bestimmt. Die Thrombozytenzahl wurde aus EDTA-Blut ermittelt. Bei einer Veränderung von mindestens der Hälfte der Laborparameter wurde zu der bestehenden Diagnose zusätzlich eine DIC diagnostiziert. Die Traumen wurden in die Gruppen Magendrehung, infektiöses Trauma, Autounfall und THR (total hip replacement) unterteilt. Die THR wurde als standartisierte Trauma-Kontrollgruppe gewählt. Die Ergebnisse wurden mit den Messwerten einer Gruppe aus gesunden Hunden verglichen und die Referenz-bereiche der Literatur entnommen. Die Häufigkeit der zusätzlich an DIC-Erkrankten in den einzelnen Untergruppen wurde ermittelt. Diese Studie zeigte, dass Hunde, die eine Magendrehung hatten oder durch ein Auto verunfallt sind, häufig sekundär eine DIC entwickelten. In beiden Fällen ist eine chirurgische Versorgung häufig angezeigt. Deshalb sollte bei der Operations-vorbereitung, vor allem bei sehr schlechtem Allgemeinzustand des Patienten, an die mögliche Entwicklung einer DIC gedacht werden. 40 % der Autounfallsopfer, 38,5 % der Hunde mit einer Magendrehung und 33 % der infektiösen Trauma-gruppe entwickelten sekundär eine DIC. Die Gruppe der Hunde, die eine THR-Operation bekommen haben, entwickelten seltener sekundär eine DIC (19,4 %). Um zu sehen, ob sich die DIC erst später nach der THR-Operation entwickelt, wurde alle zwei Tage Blut entnommen und der Gerinnungsstatus bestimmt. Zum Vergleich wurde die Gruppe der Autounfallshunde in diese Verlaufskontrolle miteinbezogen. In beiden Gruppen entwickelte sich nicht häufiger innerhalb einer Woche nach der Operation oder dem Unfall zusätzlich eine DIC. Die Laborparameter hatten bei beiden Gruppen eher die Tendenz in den Referenz-bereich. Ein weiteres Ziel dieser Studie war es herauszufinden, welche Tests geeignet sind, eine DIC zu diagnostizieren. Der optimierte Quick-Test und die Untersuchung auf D-Dimere waren den anderen Parametern sowohl in der Spezifität als auch in der Sensitivität weit überlegen. Vor allem der D-Dimer-Test lässt sich durch die einfache Handhabung und den relativ geringen zeitlichen und finanziellen Aufwand schnell unter Praxisbedingungen und im Notdienst durchführen.
