Restless is back with a long form interview on so called. Hyper-Cessationism. Pastor Ryan Denton is concerned the Reformed church is at risk of denying the supernatural at all in our lives and believes the framers of the Reformed Confession had a much more accepting view to the supernatural work of the Spirit in lead Christians. You can find many of the quotes and sources in the articles Ryan Denton wrote on this subject for Reformation21. What is Hyper-Cessationism? Part 2 Part 3 You can follow this podcast all over the internet. twitter, instagram. or facebook Or email us at restlesspodcasting@gmail.com
In this episode, the Rev. Ryan Denton, pastor and church planter in the Vanguard Presbyterian Church, joins us to discuss the recent controversy sparked by his article of Reformation21 critiquing what he identifies as Hyper-cessationism that is prevalent in modern Reformed and Reformed adjacent circles. We discuss the approach of the Reformers and Puritans themselves on the topic, as well as the practical import it has in the life of the Church. Rev. Denton's original article: https://www.reformation21.org/blog/what-is-a-hyper-cessationist Dr. Scott Aniol's response: https://g3min.org/is-it-hyper-cessationism-to-believe-that-god-doesnt-lead-through-visions-dreams-and-impressions/ Rev. Denton's response: https://www.reformation21.org/blog/is-hyper-cessationism-a-fair-term-part-two Dr. Vern Poythress' paper "Modern Spiritual Gifts as Analogous to Apostolic Gifts": https://frame-poythress.org/modern-spiritual-gifts-as-analogous-to-apostolic-gifts-affirming-extraordinary-works-of-the-spirit-within-cessationist-theology/
Recently, Ryan Denton wrote an article on Reformation21 that is making a bit of a stir online titled, “What is a Hyper-Cessationist?” Denton is convinced that modern cessationism has gone beyond the cessationism of the past and “has become a thick, wet blanket used to smother anything that smacks of the supernatural.” This is what he calls “hyper-cessationism.” I've seen Denton label R. Scott Clarke with this moniker, and, more recently, G3.

Less than five years ago, questions like; What is a Woman? or What Does it Mean to be Human? had obvious and easy answers. But with the advent of artificial intelligence, abortion through birth, technology, the right to euthanasia, and a plethora of genders – defining and understanding the truth that human beings are sacred and made in the image of God got more than complicated! In this keynote address, Dr. Trueman will trace the evolution of the sexual mores and psychological identities that got us to where we are today.Carl Trueman is a Christian theologian and ecclesiastical historian. He was Professor of Historical Theology and Church History at Westminster Theological Seminary, where he held the Paul Woolley Chair of Church History. In 2018 Trueman resigned his position at Westminster to become a full-time undergraduate professor at Grove City College, serving as Full Professor in their Department of Biblical and Religious Studies.Among Trueman's books are John Owen: Reformed Catholic, Renaissance Man, The Creedal Imperative, Fools Rush in Where Monkeys Fear to Tread: Taking Aim at Everyone, and Republocrat: Confessions of a Liberal Conservative. In 2020, Trueman published what is probably his most popular and widely read book: The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution. His most recent book, Strange New World: How Thinkers and Activists Redefined Identity and Sparked the Sexual Revolution, is a condensed version of his previous book. Once we understand the depth and breadth of the problems we face as the Church in defining the value of humanity, Dr. Trueman will share strategies and tools he believes the Church can employ to respond to the cultural upheaval we encounter daily. He will discuss how understanding what it means to be a created human being, and employing the creeds, the Anglican Catechism, and the counsel of God can equip believers to respond with love to our neighbors with different worldviews. Both Keynotes will feature time for Q & A.Carl is a Christian theologian and ecclesiastical historian. Zachary Garris is here this week with a critique of "practical egalitarianism" found even in some of the most popular evangelical defenders of masculinity and Biblical marriage. Article Discussed: The Leaven of Egalitarianism - American Reformer by Zachary Garris In Episode 36 of The American Reformer Podcast, Josh Abbotoy, Timon Cline, and Zachary Garris Timon review Nancy Pearcey's latest book, "The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes." They delve into the concept of practical egalitarianism, critiquing Pearcey's redefinition of male headship and her views on gender roles. The conversation touches on the Industrial Revolution and its impact on family dynamics, the importance of fathers being actively present in their children's lives, and the role of technology in shaping these dynamics. Listen in for a fresh perspective on gender roles, masculinity, and a practical theology of male headship. #ZacharyGarris #Masculinity #Christianity #ToxicMasculinity #Bible #Truth #Marriage #Egalitarianism #Marriage Zachary Garris serves as pastor of Bryce Avenue Presbyterian Church (PCA) in White Rock, New Mexico. Psalm 2:1-12 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then He will speak to them in His wrath, and terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 “As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of Me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him. Nick Batzig is an associate editor for Ligonier Ministries and is a pastor at Wayside PCA in Signal Mountain, TN. COVID Repentance Peter VanDoodewaard is the pastor of Covenant Community Church in Taylors, SC. He’s in-house today to chat about an article he’s written for Reformation21.org titled Covid-19 Repentance. Peter's piece combines a reflection on the Old Testament minor prophets with the unprecedented sequence of events that followed the first COVID-19 lockdown in March. At issue: the speed at which the Church Global ceased to meet for worship by government order. Could the coronavirus pandemic be interpreted as a judgment from God like those found in the Old Testament? Regardless of the answer to that sobering question, shouldn’t we be paying closer attention? Are there lessons to be learned, and repentance to be sought before God? Peter’s words give us much to consider! We are giving away free download of the plenary sessions of the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology titled Profaning the Sacred: Beauty and Holiness of the Bride of Christ by speakers like Michael Horton, Richard Phillips, Phil Johnson, and others. Just Register and download!
A listener sends a question via paper airplane, in accordance with social distancing guidelines, and the crew responds from the quarantine bunker. Due to reports of some cases of conversion to Roman Catholicism by a few Reformed ministers, theologians, and laypeople, said listener is intrigued if Reformed Theology tends to steer Protestants towards the Roman Catholic Church—more than, say, the average Baptist or other evangelical beliefs. Can we pinpoint a specific cause or a set of factors as the driving force leading Reformed Christians to Rome? What could be some of the possible attractions of Roman Catholicism? Put on your mask and listen in! Be sure to visit our website, Reformation21.org, and our store for more resources.

Pastor Nick Batzig joins Jimmy and Joe to talk about the departure of Protestants to the Roman Catholic faith. Why do some leave baptist, Presbyterian, and other churches for the Greek Orthodox or Roman Catholic Church? Does it even matter? Trigger Warning: This is a decidedly protestant podcast and episode. Who is Nick Batzig? Nick is the Organizing Pastor of New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Richmond Hill, GA. He has written numerous articles for Tabletalk Magazine, Modern Reformation, Reformation 21 and The Christward Collective. Nick is published in Jonathan Edwards and Scotland (Dunedin, 2011) and Jonathan Edwards for the Church (Evangelical Press). This left Jimmy sounding a bit rough. We will have this remedied quickly.
This week on Theology on the Go, our host, Dr. Jonathan Master is joined by Dr. Scott Swain. Dr. Swain is Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Florida. He also serves as the Academic Dean on campus. Dr. Swain is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America. He and his wife, Leigh, have four children. In light of the recent Trinitarian controversy, Theology on the Go believes that a series like this is an important service to the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, grab that cup of coffee and meet us at the table!
