Are you facing a mountain of challenges? Do you need help growing in the Christian faith? In this timely reflection, Jonathan reminds us of the power of community and the essential role of friendships in fulfilling God's calling in life by exploring the significance of the eight friends mentioned by the Apostle Paul in Colossians 4. These friends, each with unique qualities and roles, supported Paul in his ministry while imprisoned in Rome, and the same mix of qualities is essential for the godly friends we surround ourselves with today. Drawing from Scripture and personal experience, Jonathan emphasizes that we are not meant to walk alone in our spiritual journey. Instead, we need companions to encourage, support, and challenge us on our faith journey.Join Jonathan to learn from Paul's friends and reflect on the questions: What role do you play in the Body of Christ, and who are the friends you need on your journey?Connect with Jonathan and the Candid community:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/candidpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/candidpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/thecandidpod
Cancel Culture A Christ-centered vantage point, from the "Inside Out" podcast In a culture without agreed-upon standards, people across the faith and political spectrum sometimes hold others accountable by “cancelling” them. Christian attorney and apologist Abdu Murray believes the impulse to correct a wrong is natural and biblical. “What Cancel Culture has become is the--I think a quite biblical--act of holding people accountable, but run amok,” he says. According to Murray, Cancel Culture and Christian accountability have different goals. “Cancel Culture is public erasure. There's almost nothing redemptive in it. It's an act that looks a lot more like revenge than it looks like accountability.” Murray is the founder of Embrace the Truth, a non-profit dedicated to Christian apologetics and evangelism. He reminds us that when you feel that the wrongs of others should be addressed, cancelling is not the only choice. “If you refuse to cancel them,” he says, “you can still hold them accountable.” We need to know our motivation: do we want wrongdoers to take responsibility and repent, or do we want to ruin them? “We always have to think redemptively,” Murray says. “How can this be redeemed? A good friend of mine once said this, ‘that I always want to make it easier for someone to sincerely apologize rather than harder.' And sometimes Cancel Culture makes it harder for someone to sincerely apologize.” Cancelling, of course, goes both ways, and it is possible that you could be cancelled and feel that it is because of your faith in Jesus Christ. “The phrase that's been repeated many, many times: ‘You can't always control your reputation, but you can control your character.' And as painful as it can be to be rejected, the real issue is: are we looking to Jesus to say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant'?” Learn about Abdu Murray and Embrace the Truth here. Father & Son Discuss Personal “Prodigal Son” Story It's not quite as dramatic as it sounds, and then it is. My son never disappeared from home and destroyed his entire life. But for a while he purposefully left God and put himself in dangerous situations. The most dangerous was jeopardizing his soul and future with God. He broke his trust with me and his mom, and broke our hearts for a time. He set a destructive example for his siblings, his friends, and his girlfriend. Had a couple of situations gone differently, he could've ended up in much worse conditions. After a lot of difficult conversations and moments, It finally snapped in his mind and he returned full force in humility, confession, and repentance. This is a discussion from both sides about those times and implications as well as lessons learned. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Is the Evil in Society the Fault of Good People Who Didn't Stand Up? I've gotten a “yes” to this question quite often. I've seen the memes and quotes, and it's always come off as victim-blaming. Good people, at times, could and should do more. But solely blaming them for society's moral decay is a reach at best. When you bring Jesus into the equation, said conclusion becomes uncomfortable. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? The Courage to Come Back to God Leaving God is usually gradual and sin ensnares us and can lead us away. The longer we're away from God, the harder it is to return. Coming back is difficult. I've seen many people do it, and every time they came back broken and emotional. Do yourself a favor and admit it could be you. It could be a choice or series of choices you make in the future. I hope not. But if it does, I hope you'll have the courage to come back like the prodigal son in the parable Jesus told. Here's King David's story… #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Why the Singing is so Bad in Your Congregation Jesus has saved us!! The greatest salvation story of all time! But is that reflected when I'm singing about it? The Israelites after being set free from Egyptian slavery sang to God in such a way that when you read about it, you see their elation and gratitude. Does my singing to God show the same thing? Many people point out all types of problems and proposed solutions for a lackluster “song service” in collective worship. I submit to you (from the Bible) the problem is easily diagnosed and the solution is simple. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Do You Ever Consider How God Feels? This is a relationship. In any caring relationship you always consider how the other person feels. Does God get that same consideration from you? When you sin? When you pray? When you're trying to make a decision? When you worship? God is not some removed distant being unrelated to the emotions and feelings we experience. Read through the Bible and note His pleasure, His satisfaction, His sadness, and even His anger. How I live directly affects my Father, and I just wonder how much we consider this. I know it will help us to see God better. It will help us in our experience with Him. It will help us to understand and consider Him more. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? How to Start a Spiritual Revolution What can I do about it? That's the question plaguing us when we think about the problems in society. There's an undeniable downward spiral regarding morality in our society! Fact established. One of my problems with watching the news is the lack of solution offered. I'm drowning and they're describing the water! I need answers, solutions, and actions. There are many answers to the plaguing question. BUT there's only ONE RESOURCE! The Bible. God's mind put into human words. There's your power source! Revolution begins at revelation! Here's how King Josiah illustrates. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Hope is the result of faith in God and His promises! He's promised (and He can't lie), so we trust Him (faith from seeing Him keep all His promises) and we hold true hope (desire coupled with expectation)! We have to and need to hold so tightly onto this hope for our own faithful well-being AND for the world to see. We need to give them reasons to ask about our hope, so it must be displayed in our lives! The world needs to see your hope right now. With so much negativity and pessimism in our culture - they need the example of hope. They need hope in their lives and for their future. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Courage in the Face of Your…Friends?!? It takes great courage and faith to stand against your enemies. It may take even greater to stand against your friends. David looked like a great hero after his courage and faith against Goliath. He may have appeared to be weak when he spent so much time running from King Saul. Watch David hold a standard even if it isn't understood or agreed with by those who were on his side. Will you hold God's standard no matter who disagrees? It'll take faith and courage. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? When Jesus Recognizes You! We all crave recognition on some level. It brings us joy to be noticed. It warms our hearts to be remembered. We go out of of our way for even the slightest recognition from what we wear to where we live and what we drive. We appreciate it at work, and we get excited about appearing in media forms (another cause for the popularity in social media). But there will never be a more exciting and rewarding experience than to have God of all recognize you and welcome you into the kingdom prepared just for you! Opening and Accessing God's Gift If I receive a Christmas present and set it in front of me leaving it wrapped but celebrating this gift, is it really mine? Can I make use of it still wrapped in the box? Presents are (almost always) graciously given by someone who loves you and wants to bring you joy. So do you automatically earn that gift in opening it? Or are you just doing what it takes to get what's been given? See popp lol how this relates to grace and faith. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? What Does the Bible Say About Spanking Your Children? This method of discipline used to be widely accepted but has been delegitimized in recent decades. Physically punishing your child has been grossly misunderstood on both ends of the spectrum: one being an excuse for physically abusing a child, and the other deeming any form to be abusive and totally destructive. So what does God say about this? Again, it isn't an exhaustive study, but an introduction to God's instructions on this singular aspect of raising a child. I expect this to be problematic for some, and hopefully you'll be opened minded to biblical wisdom. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Using four passages from Proverbs, I'll show you some of the effects and excuses of laziness. Yes, it does affect your physical life, but the focus always has to be on our relationship with God. Joseph faced a scenario that is the dream of ungodly men. He is a good looking, powerful, and successful man who was being chased by his ruler's attractive wife. But a dream for an ungodly man is a nightmare for God's man, and Joseph refuses to disrespect God, Potiphar, and Potiphar's wife. It's an impressive scene that doesn't end well for Joseph even though he refuses to sin. Men of God, here's your encouragement to never trade God and your honor for a brief moment of pleasure - even if no one would know. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Magical surfaces? Yes. If you wear next to nothing on these surfaces, you are considered clothed. Cross the street from the beach and watch the scramble to get more clothes on. Leave the confines of the pool and watch the same scramble. When Adam and Eve found themselves naked and attempted to clothe themselves. After God pronounced judgment, He clothed them more properly. Let's see what that has to do with how I dress today. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? It's an easy word when life is smooth. It's an easy word when troubles seem distant. Well? Is that your life - smooth and trouble free? Mine neither. But can I say “good” anyway AND MEAN IT? Do you know the value of that so-called bad stuff. Learn to say good by learning value of hard times. If we don't show the world this mentality, who will? #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Ask not what the church can do for you. Ask what you can do for the church. Sometimes there are good reasons to relocate to another congregation. Then there are those Christians who are just selfish and disagreeable. Their opinions weren't heeded. They didn't get anything out of the preacher's sermons. They had a disagreement with some of their brethren. So they just had to take their over-inflated sense of self worth to a congregation who would better serve their needs. And that attitude about the family Jesus died to establish is nothing like Jesus, Himself. Church family is perfect in design and imperfect in humanity. The Lord calls for a totally selfless mentality, and complaining about what the church doesn't do for you is a problem. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? What a weird phrase, right? In Matthew 5 Jesus used this phrase, and promised the kingdom of heaven to those who are such. This is a little different approach by using the negative to reveal the concept, but I hope it's effective. Are you poor in spirit? #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? It's not that you don't need a healthy view of self. It's just that the proper view isn't coming from within. The value of you and your existence comes from God Himself. From your design to the very meaning of your life, God gives you greater value than you can ever achieve. When you focus on that real value, you'll be less inclined to classify yourself according to others' perspectives, and you'll have much less need to validate you. God cares for and loves you in such a way that you'll spend the rest of your life in His word learning to appreciate it. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? It's true that no one understands what you're going through and how you feel. BUT that isn't necessarily a problem and it an be a good thing if you'll see it as an opportunity! God wants to be everything to you. What better opportunity to build your relationship with Him than times like these - times when you have no one else to turn to but God. It's also a temptation to pity yourself and amplify the victim mentality. Here's an introduction to transforming the pitiful to the opportune. #SmallYouTubers #BibleStudy Have a Bible question? Following Christ means growing in His likeness, but that can be a difficult thing. We aren't perfect, and we are going to stumble at times.
