Executive produced by Moby, ROWDY GIRL showcases the inspiring work of Renee King-Sonnen, a former Texas cattle rancher who in 2015, after a spiritual awakening, left the cruel cycle of animal agriculture. After going vegan, King-Sonnen and her husband, Tommy Sonnen, transformed her husband's beef operation into Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, a farm animal sanctuary that seeks to rescue farm animals from factory farming. Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, located between San Antonio and Houston, in Waelder, TX, has a mission to educate the public about the cruelties of factory farming, to advocate a vegan lifestyle, and to inspire other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift and help them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living with compassion towards the animals whose lives usually end in brutal death. Renee has lived on both sides of the fence, proving that there is a common ground between farmers and vegans: a shared mission of compassion and sustainability. Filmmaker Jason Goldman's verité style documentary lovingly captures the dynamic connection between Renee, her husband Tommy and the hooved and feathered friends who inhabit Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Director / Producer Jason Goldman stops by for a conversation on his goal in making Rowdy Girl was to work on a project that reflected his personal values and giving Renee a platform to reach a wider audience, particularly farmers who she believes can change the world by moving to more sustainable and humane care of our furry friends. A former quintessential city girl, Renee King-Sonnen married into the ranching business deep in the heart of Texas. Unexpectedly, she experienced a profound change of heart and fell in love with the farm animals, which changed the course of her life forever. In this episode Renee tells her story of transformation from rancher's wife to Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary to her work with the Rancher Advocacy Program, which transitions cattle ranchers and animal farmers out of animal agribusiness. She continually brings her message of love and compassion to the hearts of sanctuary visitors, local businesses, churches, fellow ranchers and government officials, effecting real change. As a spiritual seeker, Renee has taken the deep dive into many of the world's faith traditions and finds her greatest strength in the still, small voice inside her that she has come to know through her practice of yoga and meditation in the pasture with her cow family. She is the embodiment of aligned feelings, thoughts and actions as she passionately and unrelentingly answers her calling at all levels in her life. Renee and her husband Tommy's story has been seen on CBS, ABC, RFD, and Animal Planet. Their sanctuary lives are featured in the newly released documentary, Rowdy Girl. She desperately consulted with leaders in the vegan movement, determined to do whatever she could to create sanctuary out of what was once a beef cattle operation in the heart of cattle country. As a result, the Rancher Advocacy Program was developed to give cattle ranchers and other animal farmers a way to transition into other ways of farming without animal cruelty. Transitioning out of animal agriculture requires a lot of skill, effort, and people to help. RAP is dedicated to finding the resources and the way to give farmers a way around farming animals. Renee speaks to farmers all the time and a few have converted to vegan, like 6th generation Texas cattle ranchers Cindy and Richard Traylor. Renee King-Sonnen questioned herself and drew different conclusions about life. Veganism caused her to widen her circle of compassion to include all animals—human and nonhuman. She now fights for justice for animals of all species and people of all races, genders, and sexual orientations. It all started with Rowdy Girl, a little, two-month old baby calf that my husband wanted me to care for, hoping I would start wanting to be a “good” ranchers wife.  I bought her for $300 having no idea that she would take me down the rabbit hole where I would come out on the other side of compassion for all sentient beings – even the ones that used to end up on my plate.  The rest they say is her-story. Becoming vegan for me has been a result of living on the Sonnen Ranch, now Rowdy Girl Sanctuary with my multi-generational cattle rancher husband – I couldn't take the red trailer leaving with the babies anymore – As a result I started watching documentaries and slaughterhouse videos and when I made the corner, I've never looked back. Did you know Texas is going vegan? At least, with sustainable farming pioneers like this guest, Texas and other cattle-raising states are well on their way...Renee King-Sonnen - former cattle rancher's wife who loved rodeos and cowboy boots - is the Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary - a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Since going vegan in 2014, Renee has converted Rowdy Girl Sanctuary from a cattle ranch to a sanctuary for over 120 animals (and her husband from a multi-generational cattle rancher to an animal rescuing vegan). This is the first documented beef cattle ranch vegan conversion in history, and also has pioneering initiatives such as: The Rancher Advocacy Program which transitions cattle ranchers and animal farmers out of animal agribusiness and into other viable farming and business practices, and Families Choosing Compassion is a compassionate alternative to Future Farmers of America and 4-H and brings families of children together that are saddened by the end result that leads to the slaughter of raising their animal friends as “school projects.” Rowdy Girl Sanctuary inspires other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift while helping them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living out compassion towards the animals raised for food. For more about Renee King-Sonnen:Website: https://rowdygirlsanctuary.org/ FB: facebook.com/rowdygirlsanctuary IG: instagram.com/rowdygirlsanctuary/YouTube: youtube.com/rowdygirlsanctuaryThanks for listening! Host and Family Farmer Doug Stephan wwww.eastleighfarm.com reports news that the average Thanksgiving dinner costs about $21-Dollars, but the Family Farmer only receives about $9-dollars of that. There's also news about how Family Farmers can make money with the NFU's Carbon Credit Program. Next, we meet Renee King-Sonnen, the Rowdy Girl of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary www.rowdygirlsanctuary.org. It all started with a little 2-month-old baby calf that her husband wanted her to care for, hoping that she would want to be a “good” rancher’s wife. She named all the cattle and loved them. She’d go out and spend time with them, dance around them – sing to them and talk to them. Eventually Renee realized that she could not stand to watch the babies leave their mamas to go to the sale barn FOR SLAUGHTER. In 2015, Renee initiated an online fundraiser that would eventually succeed in raising $36,000, enough money to buy her husband’s herd and donate them to the new nonprofit – the first beef cattle ranch vegan conversion in the history of Texas, the United States and most likely the world. Finally, Doug opines about the midterm election and the people we elected. He opines that we need to hold-their-feet-to-the-fire, with regard to the new Farm Bill.

Today Vidal receives Renee King-Sonnen, today's episode is about a love story and how love can transform us in amazing ways.   This is Renee's personal journey before and after opening an animal sanctuary. Renee was born and raised in Houston, Texas and is the founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Renee was a dyed-in-the-wool city girl before moving with her husband, Tommy, to their Angleton, TX Ranch in 2009. She fell in love with all the farm animals on the ranch. She had no idea that her life was about to be forever changed as a result of her husband's ranching business.   After witnessing time and time again the ranch's baby calves going to the sale barn, she became more and more depressed about the inherent cruelty of the ranching business. By October 2014, she had decided she no longer wanted any part of ranching. She went vegan and began her pursuit of a dream to open a farm animal sanctuary. She forged relationships with many key leaders in the vegan movement who offered insight and counsel and with tremendous determination she worked toward creating a sanctuary out of what was once a beef cattle ranch.   Renee's background includes a star-studded career as a professional singer, songwriter, and recording artist. In her life before Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, Renee traveled extensively with her band, Renee King & Wildcard, and her album, Renee King Queen of Honky Tonk. In addition to her work in the music business, which also included producing and being a publicist, Renee was a Top Producing Realtor® for five years running in Pearland, Texas. She founded and owned a wellness spa, where she was a certified Hatha and Kundalini yoga instructor and Ayurveda practitioner.   Renee's passion is her greatest asset, and whatever she invests her time and heart into has manifested brilliantly in the world. But she believes her true calling has finally found her in her work at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Her desire to be a mother has been fulfilled in the care of the farm animals at RGS. And now she is a catalyst for change in a sometimes dark and cruel world to educate others about the vital importance of adopting a vegan lifestyle. Renee finds her greatest strength in the still, small voice inside her that she has come to know through her practice of yoga and meditation.   This episode leaves us full of joy and hope; changes are possible when motivated by love and awareness. While there we managed to steal away some speakers for a quick two on one chat. One of the speakers, Renee King-Sonnen, stole the show with her amazing story and amazing energy. After spending sometime talking with her during and after recording we couldn't pass up a chance to have her on the show for a long form interview. Renee's story is not like any other. After marrying her now husband and cattle rancher, Renee settled in to be a typical rancher's wife. Though she always had animal rights and welfare buzzing around in her mind she suppressed the urge to succumb, something many of us have felt and done. In an attempt to follow tradition she purchased a calf with intention to raise to market weight and to be sold for food. While going through the process something began to wake within her and she wasn't able to keep what she knew to be true and decided she'd had enough. Renee was able to recognize what she and the other ranchers were doing wasn't right and decided to make a change. The calf that she raised leant her name to her new home, "Rowdy Girl Sanctuary". We talked with Renee King-Sonnen about her waking up, working with other ranchers and rancher wives to further the cause, and a very moving story about a strong calf that thought her, and I'm sure you, a lot about the future of animal welfare and the future of sanctuaries. If you can, please take some time and support the efforts of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. You can also become a member or adopt an animal and get some great perks while supporting the sanctuary and help some amazing animals.
