Executive produced by Moby, ROWDY GIRL showcases the inspiring work of Renee King-Sonnen, a former Texas cattle rancher who in 2015, after a spiritual awakening, left the cruel cycle of animal agriculture. After going vegan, King-Sonnen and her husband, Tommy Sonnen, transformed her husband's beef operation into Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, a farm animal sanctuary that seeks to rescue farm animals from factory farming. Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, located between San Antonio and Houston, in Waelder, TX, has a mission to educate the public about the cruelties of factory farming, to advocate a vegan lifestyle, and to inspire other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift and help them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living with compassion towards the animals whose lives usually end in brutal death. Renee has lived on both sides of the fence, proving that there is a common ground between farmers and vegans: a shared mission of compassion and sustainability. Filmmaker Jason Goldman's verité style documentary lovingly captures the dynamic connection between Renee, her husband Tommy and the hooved and feathered friends who inhabit Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Director / Producer Jason Goldman stops by for a conversation on his goal in making Rowdy Girl was to work on a project that reflected his personal values and giving Renee a platform to reach a wider audience, particularly farmers who she believes can change the world by moving to more sustainable and humane care of our furry friends. Meet Jody Rasch, a man of many talents, who went from being a banker to an investor in vegan enterprises and a supporter of many animal organizations including Woodstock Farm Sanctuary and Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. He's also become an accomplished visual artist and a novelist. The Silver Forest is the first in a series of books. He says this novel began as a thought experiment. We'll find out what that means. Rasch is also a partner at Beyond Impact Advisors, which facilitates investment in vegan and cruelty-free products, many of them very cutting-edge. He's considered to be a pioneer alternative protein investor. So, where is the vegan and alt-protein movement right now and where's it headed? This ultimate insider will help us figure that out with UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell.
Join me as I sit down with Brett Christoffel, the brains behind All Y'all's Foods, to explore his remarkable transformation from a traditional Texas diet to a fully vegan lifestyle. Brett's journey is not just personal; it's a narrative that echoes the growing awareness and shift in societal attitudes toward plant-based eating. Listen in as we discuss the books that reshaped his understanding of health and nutrition, leading to an impressive alleviation of a decade-long battle with depression. He shares insights from his time at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and his inspiring venture into authorship, aiming to educate others on alternative healing methods. This conversation also casts a light on the evolving Texas food scene, once synonymous with meat-heavy dishes, now becoming a burgeoning hub for plant-based protein production. Brett recounts his own experiences promoting vegan options at the Texas State Fair and the significant cultural pivot as mainstream fast-food chains begin to offer plant-based alternatives. Hear about the unique challenges and humorous anecdotes faced while advocating for a meatless lifestyle in the heart of cattle country. The stories shared illuminate not just a change in diet, but a change in perspective that is reshaping our relationship with food and the environment. In our discussion, we also tackle the controversial dynamics between government, big corporations, and the medical industry, particularly how these relationships impact public health. Brett shares the exciting yet challenging process of creating and marketing his own line of vegan products, from meatless bacon bits to protein-rich jerky. His dedication to quality ingredients and his commitment to providing healthier food choices underscores a broader movement towards conscious consumption. For anyone inspired by our chat or looking for more resources, the Consciously Clueless community on Patreon awaits with open arms, ready to support your journey toward a more mindful way of living. Join us next Wednesday for another engaging episode filled with actionable insights and heartfelt stories. Bio: Brett Christoffel is a Texan who realized on 2-10-16 that he loves all animals as he does dogs. This led him to start making plant-based jerky, launching All Y'alls Foods in May 2018. His mission is to redefine Texas protein traditions and delight and nourish customers while saving more animals. He achieves this by using less than 10% of the resources to craft crave-worthy high-quality proteins, currently jerkies and bacony bits. Compared to beef jerky, his products have more protein, calcium, iron, and magnesium and are full of fiber, phytonutrients, and cholesterol-free. Currently, his products are in 400 stores (140+ are H-E-B's), and a portion of every sale goes to support Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, the first Texas cattle ranch turned vegan sanctuary that cares for about 135 animals. Before this venture, he spent over two decades in corporate sales and completed the SKU accelerator in 2020.
Renee King-Sonnen is the Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary that transformed from a cattle ranch to a sanctuary for more than 120 animals—the first documented beef cattle ranch converted to a 100% vegan sanctuary in history. Rowdy Girl sanctuary is changing the world for farmed animals with programs like the Rancher Advocacy Program (RAP), an educational program that inspires cattle ranchers and animal farms to consider alternatives to animal farming, and Families Choosing Compassion that offers a compassionate alternative to Future Farmers of America and 4-H programs. Most recently, Renee has been the subject of a documentary, Rowdy Girl, that had its World Premiere in Toronto at Hot Docs, and the U.S. Premiere at the Hampton Film Festival. She has just completed a memoir with the working title of Secret Diary of a Cattle Rancher's Wife, slated to be published in 2024. Renee tells her fascinating story of transformation from cattle rancher's wife to vegan animal activist. We would like to thank A Well-Fed World (AWFW) for their generous support of this podcast! A former quintessential city girl, Renee King-Sonnen married into the ranching business deep in the heart of Texas. Unexpectedly, she experienced a profound change of heart and fell in love with the farm animals, which changed the course of her life forever. In this episode Renee tells her story of transformation from rancher's wife to Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary to her work with the Rancher Advocacy Program, which transitions cattle ranchers and animal farmers out of animal agribusiness. She continually brings her message of love and compassion to the hearts of sanctuary visitors, local businesses, churches, fellow ranchers and government officials, effecting real change. As a spiritual seeker, Renee has taken the deep dive into many of the world's faith traditions and finds her greatest strength in the still, small voice inside her that she has come to know through her practice of yoga and meditation in the pasture with her cow family. She is the embodiment of aligned feelings, thoughts and actions as she passionately and unrelentingly answers her calling at all levels in her life. Renee and her husband Tommy's story has been seen on CBS, ABC, RFD, and Animal Planet. Their sanctuary lives are featured in the newly released documentary, Rowdy Girl. She will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Whole Planet Spirituality Retreat that I am hosting at Unity Village this October. A Message From Rowdy Girl Sanctuary's Founder It all started with Rowdy Girl, a little 2 month old baby calf that my husband wanted me to care for, hoping I would start wanting to be a “good” ranchers wife. I bought her for $300 having no idea that she would take me down the rabbit hole where I would come out on the other side of compassion for all sentient beings – even the ones that used to end up on my plate. The rest they say is her-story. Becoming vegan for me has been a result of living on the Sonnen Ranch, now Rowdy Girl Sanctuary with my multi-generational cattle rancher husband – I couldn't take the red trailer leaving with the babies anymore – As a result I started watching documentaries and slaughterhouse videos and when I made the corner, I've never looked back. Forever Vegan! I live on a 96 acre ranch with him. I was transplanted from suburbia to the ranch in 2009 – I fell in love with all the critters….kinda like Elly Mae Clampett – I named them all and loved them everyone – I'd go out and spend time with them, dance around them – sing to them and talk to them. Then they started being trailered up to go to the sale barn, and the experience of watching them leave, the mamas wailing for a week and the absence of their souls in the pasture haunted me. As a result of watching a Melanie Joy documentary on Carnism, I was set up on Halloween 2014, while at my mother in laws. She was serving Beef Stew and instead of seeing meat, I saw floating dead animal parts. I'd been vegetarian in the past and even tried a raw diet for several months, but never had the compassion connection until I LIVED IT! I love these animals – I see their souls, and they see mine – I can tell they are looking at me out of the corner of their eye. They can feel our motives. I soon realized I could not stand to watch the babies leave their mamas even one more time to go to the sale barn FOR SLAUGHTER…and that I had to do something to prevent that from ever happening again. My husband had come to the end of his rope. He was ready to sell the entire herd and get out of the business altogether because of my revulsion to the ordeal. The idea to create my own Sanctuary to rescue all of the cows was born from this realization and I convinced my Rancher husband to work with me to make this dream a reality. Since he was at the jumping off place and was going to sell them all anyway, I asked him if I could buy them and if he'd give me a discount. He thought I had lost my mind, and frankly I had, but it was my only hope and because of compassionate vegans across the world, my project on indiegogo was funded early May 2015.

On this episode of the Animal Law Podcast, I speak with David Ebert, co-founder of The Animal Defense Partnerhip, about the work of this "pro bono counsel for animal protection charities." As David points out, the purpose of ADP is not to litigate animal rights issues, but to provide animal protection nonprofits with the legal services that any type of organization needs to function properly. From the process of forming the entity and registering with the IRS, all the way to avoiding fundraising pitfalls, drafting contracts, managing crises, and handling human resources issues, those working for animals have the same legal issues as everyone else. Too often they end up spending their time and effort and money complying with such requirements, rather than being free to do the work that needs to be done to help animals directly. That's when ADP seeks to help out. David Ebert founded the Animal Defense Partnership with Joel Litvin after a long and successful career in commercial litigation as a means to devote himself more fully to protecting animals and reducing suffering. Before retiring from practice in October 2019, David litigated complex commercial matters and also served as outside general counsel to several small and midsize companies. Now, in addition to helping many, many animal protection organizations through ADP, David is also a member of the Pro Elephant Network, Rowdy Girl Sanctuary's Rancher Advisory Coalition, the Board of Advisors for TerraMar Research, and the Advisory Board of FACE, i.e. Free All Captive Elephants).

She remarried her husband Tommy Sonnen, a multi-generational cattle rancher in 2009 and moved to their former ranch in Angleton, Texas. She fell in love with farm animals, having no idea her life was about to transform. After witnessing time and again the baby calves going to the sale barn, she became extremely depressed. In October 2014, she went vegan as a result and began researching factory farming and the compassionate alternative, farm sanctuaries. She desperately consulted with leaders in the vegan movement, determined to do whatever she could to create sanctuary out of what was once a beef cattle operation in the heart of cattle country. As a result, the Rancher Advocacy Program was developed to give cattle ranchers and other animal farmers a way to transition into other ways of farming without animal cruelty. Transitioning out of animal agriculture requires a lot of skill, effort, and people to help. RAP is dedicated to finding the resources and the way to give farmers a way around farming animals. Renee speaks to farmers all the time and a few have converted to vegan, like 6th generation Texas cattle ranchers Cindy and Richard Traylor. At least, with sustainable farming pioneers like this guest, Texas and other cattle-raising states are well on their way...Renee King-Sonnen - former cattle rancher's wife who loved rodeos and cowboy boots - is the Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary - a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Since going vegan in 2014, Renee has converted Rowdy Girl Sanctuary from a cattle ranch to a sanctuary for over 120 animals (and her husband from a multi-generational cattle rancher to an animal rescuing vegan). This is the first documented beef cattle ranch vegan conversion in history, and also has pioneering initiatives such as: The Rancher Advocacy Program which transitions cattle ranchers and animal farmers out of animal agribusiness and into other viable farming and business practices, and Families Choosing Compassion is a compassionate alternative to Future Farmers of America and 4-H and brings families of children together that are saddened by the end result that leads to the slaughter of raising their animal friends as “school projects.” Rowdy Girl Sanctuary inspires other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift while helping them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living out compassion towards the animals raised for food. For more about Renee King-Sonnen:Website: https://rowdygirlsanctuary.org/ FB: facebook.com/rowdygirlsanctuary IG: instagram.com/rowdygirlsanctuary/YouTube: youtube.com/rowdygirlsanctuaryThanks for listening! Rowdy Girl Sanctuary founder Renee King-Sonnen talks about the rise of her Texas rescue into a force for social change! Hear her incredible story: It all started with Rowdy Girl, a little 2 month old baby calf that my husband wanted me to care for, hoping I would start wanting to be a 'good' rancher's wife.

Ryuji Chua is an animal rights activist and content creator with millions of YouTube video views. Just like most of us, Ryuji did not grow up vegan; in fact he states that he assumed he would be eating eggs for breakfast for the rest of his life. Then, a few years ago, Ryuji made the connection between his breakfast choices, and the impact they were having on the animals and the environment. In this episode, Ryuji shares his own transformational story and gives us some tips on how to peacefully and lovingly talk to others, even under the most stressful of situations. Host and Family Farmer Doug Stephan wwww.eastleighfarm.com reports news that the average Thanksgiving dinner costs about $21-Dollars, but the Family Farmer only receives about $9-dollars of that. There's also news about how Family Farmers can make money with the NFU's Carbon Credit Program. Next, we meet Renee King-Sonnen, the Rowdy Girl of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary www.rowdygirlsanctuary.org. It all started with a little 2-month-old baby calf that her husband wanted her to care for, hoping that she would want to be a “good” rancher’s wife. She named all the cattle and loved them. She’d go out and spend time with them, dance around them – sing to them and talk to them. Eventually Renee realized that she could not stand to watch the babies leave their mamas to go to the sale barn FOR SLAUGHTER. In 2015, Renee initiated an online fundraiser that would eventually succeed in raising $36,000, enough money to buy her husband’s herd and donate them to the new nonprofit – the first beef cattle ranch vegan conversion in the history of Texas, the United States and most likely the world. Finally, Doug opines about the midterm election and the people we elected. He opines that we need to hold-their-feet-to-the-fire, with regard to the new Farm Bill.

Today Vidal receives Renee King-Sonnen, today's episode is about a love story and how love can transform us in amazing ways. This is Renee's personal journey before and after opening an animal sanctuary. Renee was born and raised in Houston, Texas and is the founder of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Renee was a dyed-in-the-wool city girl before moving with her husband, Tommy, to their Angleton, TX Ranch in 2009. She fell in love with all the farm animals on the ranch. She had no idea that her life was about to be forever changed as a result of her husband's ranching business. After witnessing time and time again the ranch's baby calves going to the sale barn, she became more and more depressed about the inherent cruelty of the ranching business. By October 2014, she had decided she no longer wanted any part of ranching. She went vegan and began her pursuit of a dream to open a farm animal sanctuary. She forged relationships with many key leaders in the vegan movement who offered insight and counsel and with tremendous determination she worked toward creating a sanctuary out of what was once a beef cattle ranch. Renee's background includes a star-studded career as a professional singer, songwriter, and recording artist. In her life before Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, Renee traveled extensively with her band, Renee King & Wildcard, and her album, Renee King Queen of Honky Tonk. In addition to her work in the music business, which also included producing and being a publicist, Renee was a Top Producing Realtor® for five years running in Pearland, Texas. She founded and owned a wellness spa, where she was a certified Hatha and Kundalini yoga instructor and Ayurveda practitioner. Renee's passion is her greatest asset, and whatever she invests her time and heart into has manifested brilliantly in the world. But she believes her true calling has finally found her in her work at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Her desire to be a mother has been fulfilled in the care of the farm animals at RGS. And now she is a catalyst for change in a sometimes dark and cruel world to educate others about the vital importance of adopting a vegan lifestyle. Renee finds her greatest strength in the still, small voice inside her that she has come to know through her practice of yoga and meditation. This episode leaves us full of joy and hope; changes are possible when motivated by love and awareness. Get inspired by this beautiful life journey! However, sometimes it's nice have a good life with a guest that loves what they do and has the energy to show it. Lee Day is certainly the embodiment of that sentiment. We met Lee through Renee King-Sonnen who we recently had on the show. Lee has had an interesting life and career being a celebrity pet entertainer. From being close friends with Doris Day to performing a Bark Mitzvah for Joan Rivers' dog and even taking lobsters on a date. Lee is filled with stories and songs to comprise multiple books and albums. She was a riot to have on and had us rolling. If you're driving while listening you may need to pull over until you stop laughing. Lee is marrying two of Renee King-Sonnen's pigs on September 17 at an event to benefit the Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. Tickets are available for the event in New York. If you are unable to attend you can donate directly to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary to assist in their efforts. ABOUT LEE DAY: CELEBRITY PET ENTERTAINER Lee Day provides a service not performed by any other entertainer world-wide. She has combined two of her most intense passions, show business and pets, into a business that has endured for fifteen years. How about doing something different and unique that has never been done on a sitcom before, a pet wedding, Bark Mitzvah, romantic date, or baptism party? This is not limited to just dogs and cats, she's performed weddings for horses and penguins, taken two lobsters out on a romantic date, and the list goes on. Lee Day is a singer, actress, comedian and dancer. Her business has been spotlighted on Eye on L.A., the Sally Jessy Raphael Show, Nickelodeon, Eyewitness News, the Regis Philbin Show, The Gayle King Show, A Current Affair and has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today, The Globe, Star-Ledger, L.A. While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market. Recently we had the opportunity to work with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue at Asheville Veganfest. While there we managed to steal away some speakers for a quick two on one chat. One of the speakers, Renee King-Sonnen, stole the show with her amazing story and amazing energy. After spending sometime talking with her during and after recording we couldn't pass up a chance to have her on the show for a long form interview. Renee's story is not like any other. After marrying her now husband and cattle rancher, Renee settled in to be a typical rancher's wife. Though she always had animal rights and welfare buzzing around in her mind she suppressed the urge to succumb, something many of us have felt and done. In an attempt to follow tradition she purchased a calf with intention to raise to market weight and to be sold for food. While going through the process something began to wake within her and she wasn't able to keep what she knew to be true and decided she'd had enough. Renee was able to recognize what she and the other ranchers were doing wasn't right and decided to make a change. The calf that she raised leant her name to her new home, "Rowdy Girl Sanctuary". We talked with Renee King-Sonnen about her waking up, working with other ranchers and rancher wives to further the cause, and a very moving story about a strong calf that thought her, and I'm sure you, a lot about the future of animal welfare and the future of sanctuaries. If you can, please take some time and support the efforts of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. You can also become a member or adopt an animal and get some great perks while supporting the sanctuary and help some amazing animals. Hope, Dave, and Matt had an amazing weekend at the Asheville VeganFest presented by Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Though we were only able to spend one of the two days at the event we saw some amazing speakers, heard some inspiring stories, and our very own vegan renegade was called into action to speak on the vegan athlete panel. We had some minor technical difficulties but streamed the event over Facebook, it was a great success with a lot viewers. If you somehow missed our streaming you can view them on our Facebook video page. A few of the speakers were able to make to the pre-party as well and we snagged them for a quick chat. Renee King-Sonnen: Rowdy Girl Sanctuary Matt Frazier: No Meat Athlete Jen Peer Patrik Baboumian: Strongman and world record holder We were also honored to have a few of these speakers sit down with us for a quick "one on two" after their talks. RENEE KING-SONNEN Renne from Rowdy Girl Sanctuary has an amazing story. She married into the Texas rancher way of life and in an attempt to find solidarity with her rancher husband she raised a calf. While doing so she became aware of it's sentience and began educating herself. Though she struggled to find balance with her internal battles and her marriage she hit a breaking point. Instead of he choice for compassion breaking down her relationship she turned her husband around and converted their cattle ranch into an animal sanctuary. MATT FRAZIER Matt Frazier is well known as the No Meat Athlete and has a popular podcast (just like us). Matt's transition was slow as he worked his way into a plant-based life. Our short chat with Matt ended up focusing on making small changes and working toward gradual improvement. He also shared how he raises his young children on a vegan diet but at the same time, not sweating the small stuff. PATRIK BABOUMIAN Patrik Baboumian is just as powerful as his name sounds. Considered the strongest man in German, one of the strongest in the world, and holding multiple world records you would assume he would be a meat eating powerhouse. Instead he's a plant eating vegan badass. After Dave fangirled we were still able to get a glimpse into Patriks view on diet, training, how his journey from a meat eater, vegetarian (eating 6lbs of cottage cheese), and finally a vegan was the best decision he's ever made. ASHEVILLE VEGANFEST WRAP UP We can't state how much we enjoyed our time at VeganFest and we look forward to working with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue more next year.
