Rainy Night/ Highway Motel — spend a mid-90s motel overnight perched above a highway during a thunderstorm. So after graduating from military boarding school, I faced a nearly thousand-mile drive from deep in the Southeast to the Hudson Valley in New York. I believe we stopped to rest somewhere near Frackville, PA. It was late, and the skies were awash with rain and flashes of lightning. My father was exhausted, and he was almost immediately asleep after tossing the dust cover off the bed.My heart was racing from the new freedoms I faced. No more reveille, no more taps; no more drill or retired military folks ordering me around. (I was a **** student who had to regularly navigate a retired Command Sergeant Major.) I was free—at least for a few months, before I would attempt another military school (college).Whatever. That night I was free, old enough to try cigarettes or die in war. Mr. High School Graduate.The summer felt like a budding verification of me. I had settled something, unshackled myself from societal expectations. I was going to be a big deal (oh, youth and your unobtainable optomism).All of which is to say: I couldn't sleep. I was excited. Also extremely bored. The motel room was stuffy. I couldn't have the volume too high on the manual television—it would wake my father (not that there was anything on anyway). All my Wizard magazines and Mack Bolan novels were packed in the U-Haul box with wheels (the mid-90s being a decade or more before smartphones).So I read Jonah in the room's complimentary gold book… about a guy who refuses the Almighty and tries to escape across the Mediterranean. Jonah's boat is hit with a giant storm, and the other folks on the boat are like, “**** you, dude,” and toss him into the sea. Where he's eaten by a giant fish. And somehow lives half-a-week in a fish without a tv set.I remember wishing I had packed Detroit Deathwatch in the car.

The EPA says it will reconsider rules that would have required a move toward electric trucks and big changes to diesel-powered trucks. Also, we'll also have information about an Illinois battle over California-style emission regulations. And for truckers going the wrong way, one possible fix is a U-turn. But some carriers are not OK with that. In this episode of the Crack House Chronicles Donnie and Dale discuss the unsolved murder of Chuck Porter and speak with his sister Crystal Porter. Born Charles "Chuck" Alvin Porter, Jr., he was 39 at the time of his murder.  This took place on Sunday, September 26, 1993, at the Interstate 85 rest stop in Cleveland County.  Mr. Porter was working at the rest stop as part of his employment with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  He was found tied-up with a gunshot wound to the chest in the rest stop utility room.  Witnesses reported seeing two young black men driving away toward I-85 southbound in a dark Volkswagen.  Sketches of the two men were circulated, but have not produced any viable leads. The Hotel Chelsea refers to itself as "A Rest Stop for Rare Individuals" and indeed, it has hosted some famous creatives. Today it is a luxury hotel, but when it began, this was one of the first forays into attracting the upper class to rent apartments in New York City. The interior was grand and the upper floors were specifically designed to attract artists. The hotel has stood for nearly 150 years and has not only provided housing for some unique people, but it hosts many spirits. These include punk rocker Sid Vicious and his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Nine radio reporters. Two days. One rest stop on the New York State Thruway. Stories of people who are just passing through, and the ones who can't leave, because this is where their jobs are. Act One: Host Ira Glass describes scenes from a rest stop on the New York State Thruway, the Plattekill Travel Plaza, and the kind of people you might meet if you ever stayed long enough to talk with them. These include Robert Woodhill, the general manager, who needs a good sales day so he can beat his friend Andy, who manages a rest stop in Maine, in their weekly competition. Ira hangs out with a group of foreign students who've landed in Plattekill on a summer work program, and reporter Lisa Pollak gets travel tips from Lenny Wheat, who works at the rest stop's information booth. Reporter Jonathan Goldstein spends a few hours in the rest stop parking lot. (30 minutes)Act Two: More stories of travelers and workers at a highway rest stop. The competition between Plattekill and Maine continues. Reporter Sean Cole observes the lunch rush at the rest stop's busiest restaurant and stumbles into a behind-the-scenes romance. Reporter Gregory Warner watches a cashier at the Travel Mart deal with an angry customer. Reporters Nancy Updike and Jay Allison hang out for the graveyard shift – midnight to 8 a.m. – and find a surprising amount of romance at the rest stop.
