Are you ready for another dose of in-the-trenches insight from Doug Trein? Well, you'd better be, because this episode concludes our first collaboration with this consummate professional, multi-talented, and profoundly bassy-voiced developer/writer. This time around, we dive into the nitty-gritty of game reviews, listen to stories about the "behind the scenes" of games journalism, and try to dissect the complicated topic of review scores. We don't plan on giving this episode a score, but we sincerely hope you enjoy it.Want to learn more about Basileus? Check out the official website.Looking for a new game to dive into? Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:11:25 It’s a major Writers Guild of America Awards nomination deep dive to start off the show, analyzing all of the potential Oscar crossovers for March 15th and the Original / Adapted Screenplay categories. We reference recent history, crossover nom/nom stats, how many winners have gone from guild to academy, and we put your brain in a pretzel because we love so many of these WGA nominations. There are indeed stats for & against their crossing over to the Oscars. But we also have quite a lot to talk about with all the snubs and more importantly, all the ineligible contenders in these screenplay categories. The MUAHS awards AKA the Make-Up & Hair Stylists guild awards have higher stakes than usual this year because how they whittle down their shortlist may enable a certain beloved someone to win her first Oscar. So we rant about this for the second time in 3 episodes. Then we needed to take the last half hour and revisit a contending film that we already reviewed back in the fall in Sound Of Metal. This Amazon Prime Original deserved a further study from us. So we dive into its awards resume and re-review all of its chances. We do about 15 minutes of non-spoilers followed by a breakdown of a few of the big scenes after a spoiler warning, and if you missed the outro, stay tuned for more revisits in future episodes. Nomadland is on our schedule for next week after we dive into our Golden Globes Preview Special, where we’ll discuss all kinds of gambling odds and glorious vices. If you enjoyed this episode, please take a few moments to leave us a 5 star rating on Apple Podcasts, and do get ready for this website. We want more noms than Song & Supporting Actor for Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah, WB’s latest addition to the surging subs at HBO MAX, and our latest addition to the ongoing argument we have with the Academy’s take on the Best Picture category. That means you get our non-spoiler section first, where we build to a recap of its performance thus far this awards season and a discussion of the film’s Oscar chances. Then we break down the plot and some of our favorite scenes in spoilers. As we’ve stated throughout this strange awards season, the Best Picture conversation is a difficult one. We’ve struggled with the candidacy of one particular film, which some predict as a frontrunner, and that conversation continues here. But we also break down the supporting actor race in further detail and how Daniel Kaluuya could contend. Otherwise, this episode is certainly one where we cannot avoid politics or a discussion of history. Hopefully, our efforts add to the discourse and help where possible. But we also recognize our limitations. So as always, we want and need to hear from you. We’re at MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are at Mike, Mike, and Oscar on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. Could it be this year’s Parasite? Well… as was the case with Parasite, the Mikes disagree and debate many of the finer points. But as is the case with all our film studies, we build our spoiler free first half to an Oscars discussion before analyzing the plot. What is This Episode? - Top of Show PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN 2020 OSP: SPOILER-FREE REVIEW: Plot Premise/Expectations, Review Scores - 3:06 Awards Profile/Script Thoughts - 9:40 Production Values: Sight - 15:25 Sound - 17:11 Performances: Carey Mulligan - 21:13 Bo Burnham/Laverne Cox - 25:50 Rest of Cast - 27:26 How Many Total Noms? - 33:17 SPOILER WARNING - 35:38 SPOILER-FILLED REVIEW: What’s Real? - 36:56 Mulholland Driving - 46:50 Subversion + Recontextualization - 51:01 Don’t I Know You? - 57:41 Highs + Lows Throughout The Plot - 1:03:40 FINAL GRADES - 1:17:00 Where To Find Us/LEAVE US A 5* REVIEW! - 1:20:51 Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:21:40 Promising Young Woman was one of our most anticipated films of the year, and we begin with a discussion of these high expectations. Then we analyze the Oscar possibilities throughout the rest of the non-spoiler first half as we give you some opposing thoughts on the direction & script. But we come back together for the underrated cinematography and rightfully celebrated music. Finally, although we save more debate on where the performances of Carey Mulligan and cast rank in this year’s acting categories, we deliver some high praise to the ensemble. As for our massive spoiler section, we begin with some of the issues hinted at in the first half. It’s not a throwback blow-out argument like the MMO old days. But we do get into a debate as we analyze some of the main plot points before a big discussion on the film’s end. Then we backtrack and go chronologically through a bunch of our shared best scenes until it’s time to drop our final grades. This is the latest of many recent Oscars Profile Movie Review episodes including Mank, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Soul, and Pieces of a Woman. It’s also the first of the next flurry of film studies as we have One Night In Miami and News of the World coming soon. So stay tuned. Hey, Academy. Don’t forget about Vanessa Kirby & Ellen Burstyn! Our review Pieces of a Woman is loaded with heavy subject matter. But we also get the chance to praise some incredible filmmaking. So we begin our non-spoilers discussion with an Oscar Lens on these two performances and how they stack up in the lead & supporting actress races. Then we also have a lot of praise for Molly Parker before we regrettably must have a talk about Shia Lebeouf. Our non-spoiler first half does follow the lead of the film’s trailer and marketed premise, and we’ll outline more of this story in our first half hour than perhaps we usually do. But we do think it’s necessary in this instance, and we explain why in our script thoughts section before we each gush about our favorite production values. The spoiler section begins with our thoughts on the plot structure from the 30 minute cold opening to how the characters must reckon with it. Our glowing reviews of the performances, script & direction carry through into a list of our best scenes before we footnote a few of our issues and layout how Pieces of a Woman stacks up to the rest of the 2020/21 film year. Sorry for the short hiatus. But we are back with this rave review of Pixar’s Soul. There’s nearly 40 minutes of Oscar Lens analysis of its awards season chances in non-spoilers. It was the longest we’ve been away from the microphones in our 3+ years. But it especially hurt us all the more because we had to delay our thanks and well wishes to you all for 2021. So after some belated tidings of good cheer at the top of the show, we’re even happier to come back to review this particular movie. This Oscar Sprint Profile review of Pixar’s Soul is indeed, a rave. It’s one of our favorite films of the 2020/21 film year, and we are here to celebrate it. We also try and take a negative and turn it into a positive. Obviously, we’re getting to the film a bit later than we hoped. But that also means we were able to do more research and react to more fallout. So this non-spoiler section is nearly entirely filled with awards season speculation, punditry research, analysis, and our projections on all the possible categories where Soul could and should contend. Plus, we do have some unique qualifications for this review. You can find our entire coverage of everything Pixar in our (now) 22 episode long, Soundcloud playlist, “The Films of Pixar.” This rewatch series features our analysis of Pixar’s 22 Rules of Storytelling, and our behind the scenes research on the History of Pixar Company. So we certainly reference that series in this episode, and if you enjoyed this show, do go back and enjoy this playlist. As for our spoiler section, this is where you get some hardcore film study done. We make comparisons to other films you won’t hear elsewhere, and we analyze this script in ways you won’t find on other shows. This movie is truly a joy to behold and worthy of celebration. So let’s get behind its Oscars chances and push it every way we can. Otherwise, and as always, we want to hear your thoughts.
