Paper Mario is a video game series and part of the Mario franchise, developed by Intelligent Systems and produced by Nintendo. It combines elements from the role-playing, action-adventure, and puzzle genres. Players control a paper cutout version of Mario, usually with allies, on a quest to defeat the antagonist, primarily Bowser. The series consists of six games and one spin-off; the first, Paper Mario (2000), was released for the Nintendo 64, and the most recent, Paper Mario: The Origami King (2020), for the Nintendo Switch. We are playing hella mindgames in this episode of ScaryCrit, where we get lost in the trappings of the 2000s trippy thriller The Cell. This has been an episode long in the making and it makes quite a step in our #Roadto100! Bolstered by Melle's delicious passion for this underrated gem, we explore Jennifer and Vince's uncharacteristic roles, the movie essentially being two different stories, the illustration of fantasy and darkness through the mind and the mind itself being the perfect sandbox for The Cell to play with all it's weirdness in. Note: If y'all have not ever watched The Cell, we implore you heavily to please see it before listening. Seriously!Second note: Please don't hold our mispronunciations of Hercule Poirot and Gonjiam against us. Jared got the I and J mixed up and Melle's heart was in the right place. Thank you. It's our third and final stretch of the Road to BGP 2021, and we're almost prepared for the final showdown. But before we get to the games, we revisit a classic video game boondoggle, consider the six degrees of Ryu, and argue about Pokémon designs. Then, Dylan and Alex finally settle in for some dodgeball metropolises, residential horrors, papercraft plumbers, not to mention some honorable mentions that didn't quite make the cut. Games include Knockout City, Resident Evil Village, Adios, New Pokémon Snap, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Hitman 3, Later Alligator, The Pathless, and Slice & Dice. Got a question for the show? Solar Ash is a mesmerising journey into a black hole full of shattered worlds. It's the story of Rei, a fast-moving voidrunner tasked with collapsing this "Ultravoid" to save her planet from destruction. It combines slick, satisfying movement, epic boss encounters, and a melancholy story into thrilling and resonant whole. Also discussed: Genesis Noir, Paper Mario: The Origami King, Life Is Strange: True Colors. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week Trey is sitting in with Dan while Dudley is off getting married in Las Vegas. Dan is getting into a fight with turtles in Paper Mario: The Origami King.
